Cette etude a une envergure bipartite: outre qu'elle se consacre aux quantificateurs flous avec une forte concentration sur certain(s), diver(s), differents(s), plusieurs et quelque(s), elle compare leurs emplois avec ceux du Dictionnaire des frequences. Avant tout, elle se veut descriptive et synchronique. Dans cette optique, elle se base sur un corpus clos, celui de l'idiolecte de l'anthropologue francais Claude Levi-Strauss. Ce corpus numerise compte dix sous-corpus d'inegale longueur, couvrant cinq decennies de la deuxieme partie du XX[sup e] siecle et totalisant 1 251 792 mots. Par ailleurs, il englobe 3872 occurrences des cinq quantificateurs flous en question. Dans un premier temps, il s'agit d'une analyse distributionnelle a laquelle s'ajoute une analyse componentielle. Nous mettrons en evidence les contextes d'apparition de chacun des cinq quantificateurs flous dans le corpus en plus de leur appliquer une batterie de tests semantiques et syntaxiques pour deceler leur fonctionnement dans la langue francaise. Pour ce qui concerne le semantisme, nous presenterons ce que d'autres linguistes tels Arrive, Gadet & Galmiche, Chevalier, Curat, Damourette & Pichon, Gondret, Grevisse, Gross, Mitterand, Riegel, Pellat & Rioul et Wilmet ont a dire a propos1 de ces cinq quantificateurs flous. Ce chemin parcouru, nous pourrons tester l'hypothese que divers, differents et plusieurs forment un sous-systeme au sein de la classe de quantificateurs flous alors que certains(s) et quelque(s) en forment un autre. La seconde partie de cette etude consiste en une analyse statistique. II s'agit d'une comparaison des frequences relatives des cinq quantificateurs flous dans le corpus de Levi-Strauss avec celles du Dictionnaire des frequences qui livre l'equivalent d'une norme de la langue: il totalise 70 317 234 mots, dont 37 653 685 relevent du XX[sup e] siecle.

By the end of the eighteenth century, as imagination makes its appearance behind representation, man enters the field of knowledge and literature emerges in the world of fiction. L'Architecture of Claude-Nicolas Ledoux is too complex a work to make its mapping possible in such a short study. I therefore tried to unfold the work through the question that seemed to me to be the most revelatory of this time. The notion of caratere derived from the specific codes of a culture where representation was the foundation of a possible order. In L'Architecture, between the fictional character and his caractere is this space where representation and imagination coincide through what makes the specificity of human nature: the identity, the ability to speak, the power to act, and the perception of time.

<p>This dissertation consists of two parts: a chamber opera and an article on the work of Claude Vivier.</p><p>"Cardano" is a new chamber opera by composer Bryan Christian about the work and tragic life of the Renaissance polymath Gerolamo Cardano (1501-1576). Scored for three vocal soloists, an actor, and an eleven-part ensemble, "Cardano" represents a coalescence of Christian's interests in medieval and Renaissance sources, mathematics, and intensely dramatic vocal music. Christian constructed the libretto from fragmented excerpts of primary sources written by Cardano and his rival Niccolo Tartaglia. The opera reinvigorates Cardano's 16th-century scientific and philosophical models by sonifying and mapping these models to salient musical and dramatic features. These models prominently include Cardano's solution to the cubic equation and his horoscope of Jesus Christ, which was deemed so scandalous in the 16th century that it ultimately led to Cardano's imprisonment under the Roman Inquisition in 1570 - the opera's tragic conclusion. Presenting these ideas in opera allows them to resound beyond the music itself and project through the characters and drama on stage. In this way, the historical documents and theories - revealing Cardano's unique understanding of the world and his contributions to society - are given new life as they tell his tragic story.</p><p>Claude Vivier's homophonic treatment of combination tones--what he called les couleurs--demands an extension of traditional methods of harmonic and spectral analysis. Incomplete explanations of this technique throughout the secondary literature further demand a revised and cohesive definition. To analyze all variations of les couleurs, I developed the analytical concept of combination-tone classes (CTCs) and built upon Angela Lohri's (2010) combination tone matrix to create a dynamic CTC matrix, from which CTC sets may be extracted. Intensive CTC set analysis reveals a definitive correlation between CTC set and formal sections in Vivier's composition "Bouchara." Although formally adjacent CTC sets are often markedly varied, all sets share a subset of lower-order CTCs, aiding in perception of spectral cohesion across formal boundaries. This analysis illuminates the interrelationships of CTC sets to their parent dyads, their orchestration, their playing technique, and form in "Bouchara." CTC set analysis is compared with Vivier's sketches for "Bouchara," which suggest that les couleurs were intended as integral components of the work's musical structure.</p> / Dissertation

Dans cette thèse, nous cherchons à penser les enjeux philosophiques de l’application de méthodes herméneutiques en histoire de la philosophie politique. À partir d’une étude comparative des interprétations de l’œuvre de Nicolas Machiavel offertes par Leo Strauss, Quentin Skinner et Claude Lefort, nous interrogeons le rapport que l’interprète institue avec le texte qu’il étudie. Nous montrons qu’il y a dans les trois cas un écart entre l’exposition théorique des principes herméneutiques et l’application effective de ces derniers. Nous soutenons que les divergences fondamentales entre les trois lectures des écrits machiavéliens ne trouvent pas leur fondement dans la différence des méthodes employées, mais proviennent en dernier lieu de la compréhension particulière qu’ils ont du rôle et du statut de la pensée de Machiavel. Autrement dit, nous cherchons à montrer que l’intérêt pour la signification de l’œuvre machiavélienne dépasse la simple analyse des écrits d’un auteur du passé; les trois interprètes entretiennent un rapport singulier à la pensée du secrétaire florentin. En ce sens, l’étude des herméneutiques de Strauss, Skinner et Lefort appliquées à Machiavel est indissociable d’une interrogation sur l’articulation entre interprétation et politique.
