Examining concepts of author disambiguation: co-authorship as a disambiguation feature in EconBiz

Wiechmann, Swantje 13 April 2022 (has links)
Name ambiguity of authors is a long-standing challenge in Digital Libraries. Simple string searches for authors often have unsatisfactory results: publications by the author in which their name is written differently cannot be found, and publications by other authors of the same name get included. The authors can be distinguished with the use of persistent identifers. This improves the search function and also contributes to the data linking process. But many catalogs of libraries are not fully disambiguated and it is not feasible for big libraries like the ZBW - Leibniz Information Centre for Economics to disambiguate the bibliographic records manually. The goal of this work is to help the ZBW with their disambiguation task. For this purpose I analysed the datasets of the ZBW and identifed the challenges that need to be overcome. I proposed an approach which uses already disambiguated records to assign persistent identifer to ambiguous author references. The approach could disambiguate ambiguous author references, though the quality of the method needs to be further evaluated.:List of Figures List of Tables Listings List of Algorithms 1 Introduction 1.1 Aim of the work 1.2 Structure of the thesis 2 Author disambiguation 2.1 Formal defnition 2.2 Types of disambiguation methods 2.3 Types of disambiguation features 2.4 Co-authorship as a disambiguation feature 3 The datasets of the ZBW 3.1 Methodology 3.2 Analysing the Econis data 3.3 Disambiguating names from other sources 4 Current approaches 4.1 Solving the common name problem 4.2 An incremental approach 4.3 Approaches in related fields 5 Proposal of an application-relevant approach 5.1 Disambiguation approach 5.2 Test datasets 5.3 Evaluation of the results 5.3.1 Partly disambiguated bibliographic records 5.3.2 Ambiguous bibliographic records with two or more authors 5.3.3 Ambiguous bibliograpic records with one author 6 Conclusion A Full figures B Extended tables C Full results of the tests of the proposed method C.1 Partly disambiguated bibliographic records C.2 Ambiguous bibliographic records Bibliography

The Association Between Co-authorship Network Structures and Successful Academic Publishing Among Higher Education Scholars

Rumsey, Anne R. 21 July 2006 (has links) (PDF)
This research explores and describes co-authorship network structures in the academic publication process. The production of academic publications, through co-authorship choices or strategies, creates a network structure among co-authoring scholars which can influence research visibility and enhance stature among peers (Bayer & Smart, 1991). A specific scholar's co-authorship network may reflect a structure of more cohesion (Coleman, 1988) or one which fills more structural holes (Burt, 1992), both of which are theorized, from contrasting perspectives, to be associated with publication success. Therefore, this study examined the association of these two academic co-authorship network structures with publication success, specifically within the field of research and scholarship on higher education. The network population consisted of 810 academic scholars who published articles in at least one of four top-ranked higher education research journals. Based upon structural holes and cohesion, seven different co-authorship network structures were identified. In terms of total publications, findings suggest that filling structural holes—a network structure that spans across the larger network and provides authors with a greater variety of co-authors—may even be further enhanced when there were also multiple publications with the same co-authors. Thus, an ideal hybrid network structure of both structural holes and strong ties may be possible. The data suggested that co-authoring multiple times with the same scholars (mean tie strength) may be critical to realizing the potential value buried within the structural holes (Burt, 2001).

Co-Authorship Network Analysis in Constraint Programming Research

Ali, Lana January 2023 (has links)
The aim of this thesis was to study co-authorship in the constraint programming research community. This was done by conducting social network analysis (SNA) based on published scientific papers from the proceedings of the International Conference on Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming. Bibliographic data of the scientific literature was collected for the years 2018–2022 of the annual conference. For quantitative analysis, graph metrics were computed to study the properties and structure of the overall network, and also to study the attributes and characteristics of individual authors to be able to identify central actors of the community. Furthermore, graph layout algorithms were used for visualisation of the network. The computed metrics and the graphical visualisations enabled identifying collaboration patterns and behaviours within the studied field. The results of this study show that the most central actors of the community are mainly male and dominated by white organisations and countries. The results of the study also show that the vast majority of authors of the community collaborate with others in writing papers. However, due to the low density of the network there is opportunity and room for new collaboration patterns to take place within the research community.

Formerly, we had taken for granted the several discurvise forms media, demographic data and scientific texts - which contribute for building a concept of violence associated with biological and cultural naturalization. The methodology we took as support is firmly related to the Social Construcionism. Based on this approach, we sought for implying educators from the school where the research took place, in order to potentialize them to construct new meanings and negotiate new versions on the previously existent versions of violence circulating at school. The research was developed in two distinct stages. At first, we registered the speeches on violence arisen as we wander around the school and joined teachers meetings during the Especial Integral Journey (EIJ). This former step helped us on collecting material to compose a report, which supported latter discussions with third grade teachers. Such discussions were held at the second stage of the research under the purpose of compiling a consensual report on the theme. The outcomes obtained at the first stage permitted us to conclude there are multiple and contextual meanings of violence. In addition, we noticed essentialist repertories presented in some speeches, which were associated to the school routine, in favor of excluding and paternalist practices. Teachers of the elementary grades versed their speeches onto the genesis of violence brought up at the family scope. Theachers of the fourth grade considered there is no violence inside school, because students are grown-ups, although they considered as violent the social and economic conditions the students are submitted. Third grade teachers conceived violence as the product of a lacking compass, which is loosen between the necessity of clearer rules at school and the omission of school principal on drawing living rules. They have also found as violent the impossibility of carrying out the primordial school mission, which is to educate. Yet, the analyses brought about by the group discussions, based on the synthesis-report, revealed that the procedures including negotiation of meanings are sensitive to power relations, which may either facilitate or oppose negotiations. We conclude the oppportunities for negotiating senses should not be reduced to single episode, but follow along through the whole researching procedure / Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo entender os sentidos que têm para os educadores a violência na escola e as estratégias por eles utilizadas para lidar com ela.

Représentations et pratiques de l'amitié : du cercle au jeu, du don à la collaboration / Stendhal's representations and practice of friendship : from a social circle to a game, from giving to co-authorship

Bassou, Muriel 05 December 2011 (has links)
Friendship is a classical subject - albeit hardly studied in Stendhal works - which allows a crisscross of views on otherness, intimacy and dialogism. It is also at the core of Self-knowledge. What were Stendhal's representations of friendship ? Although he did not write a chapter about Friendship, did he eventually give way to a structured theory about friendship? One that could be found within a social custom called the beylist friendship ? The concept of friendship invites us to reconsider the key concepts of egotism and beylism. Egotism practiced by many, a paradoxical concept, is framed within a larger consideration about authorship. Stendhal moldes himself within a circle of friends ; his ideas –especially the one on the analysis of the human heart- are built up in the midst of rich dialogism and co-authorship writings. Beylism should not be reduced to a mere reference to Beyle. It is a philosophy of life on how to live happily with others when, paradoxically, happiness lies within the gap between the self and the other and depends on the possibility of breaking bonds. With the support of sociologic and genetic analysis tools, our work focuses on the illustration of friendship as a social circle and a game. We analyze its mechanisms which include a mixed system of giving and collaborating. The study of friendship in Stendhal's work helps reassess the otherness in his literature and also highlights his co-authorship writings during his youth which confirm the particularly dialogical nature of his work.

As redes de colaboração científica no Brasil : (2004-2006)

Vanz, Samile Andrea de Souza January 2009 (has links)
Trough co-authorship analysis of articles, this study investigates the national publications indexed in ISI's SCI between the years of 2004-2006, aiming to deepen and understand the scientific collaboration in the Brazilian community. The analysis of the institutions shows that the production is concentrated in a few institutions, mostly public universities located at specific regions. The mean of institution per article is 2,4 , and the exam of the most productive institutions evidenced the practice of intra-institutional co-authorship. The application of relative collaboration indexes, MDS analysis, factorial and clusters identified the presence of regionally formed groups. The international co-authorship decreased percentage during the triennium, representing 30, 3% of Brazilian production.USA, France, United Kingdom and Germany are the major partners in number of articles, though relative indexes show that USA and Argentina are the main partners. Dynamic Co-authorship Network Analysis with Applications to Survey Metadata

Johansson, Peter January 2020 (has links)
Co-authorship networks are a particular sort of social networks representing authors collaborating on joint publications. Such networks are studied within the fields of bibliometrics and scientometrics. While it is possible to analyze co-authorship networks in their entirety, certain analytical tasks would benefit from representing such networks as dynamic graphs, which incorporate a temporal dimension and capture structural transformations unfolding over time. The importance of dynamic graphs has emerged in recent years, in graph theory at large as well as within application domains such as social sciences, for instance.Research regarding dynamic graphs has been identified as one of the major challenges within network theory since they are particularly useful for describing real-world systems. This thesis project revolves around dynamic co-authorship network analysis algorithms, which aim to extract various temporal aspects regarding author collaborations. It is the result of a proposal by the ISOVIS group at Linnaeus University, which is active within the fields of exploratory data analysis and information visualization, including the problem of visual analysis of scientific publication data. The algorithms developed in this project extract analytical data such as (1) joint publications among pairs of authors, (2) temporal trends on connected components (groups of authors) along with network centrality measurements, and (3) major events regarding emergence, mergers, and splits of connected components over time. Together with domain experts, the analysis regarding usability, performance, and scalability of the algorithms took place as part of the evaluation process to assure that the result met the needs which instigated this thesis project. The application of the algorithms on real data sets provided by the ISOVIS group was useful concerning the evaluation of the usability domain. In contrast, customized synthetic data sets was an excellent tool for evaluating performance and scalability.
