O efeito da experiência, do conhecimento e da habilidade na tomada de decisão do passe do futsal a partir das relações interpessoais angulares / The effect of experience, knowledge and skill on decision-making futsal pass from the angular interpersonal relationships

Silvia Leticia da Silva 15 December 2014 (has links)
The decision-making is an essential component for the performance of a number of motor skills, meanly for those that involve judgments and choices. Two theoretical perspectives highlight in this context: one focusing on the levels of experience and knowledge of individuals, and another, on the perception of physical variables that reflect the interaction between individuals and their environments. In the present study both of them were considered together. We investigated how individuals with different levels of experience, knowledge and skill decided on the pass of the ball based on angular interpersonal interactions. The angle was chosen as collective variable due it be able to capture the interpersonal relationships in situations of passing and intercepting of passing. Two futsal games were filmed with experienced and inexperienced players between 13 and 14 years old. The angular interpersonal relationships were: angle A, passing vector angle to the ball carriernearest defender\'s vector; and angle B, vector angle to the ball carrier-teammate\'s nearest defender\'s vector. These angular relationships were also considered in relation to their rate of change based on velocity and variability. All measures were calculated based on the displacements of the players relative to the x and y coordinates, which were acquired through the TACTO software in a frequency of 25 Hz. The data have been analysed by the U teste of Mann-Whitney considering the level of significance p<=0.05. The results obtained related to the levels of experience and knowledge haven´t revealed significant differences in none of the angular variables. But considering the level of skill, significant differences have been found only towards the angular velocity (B). Regarding the effectiveness of the pass the results showed that despite the levels of experience, knowledge and skill, the effective pass been carried out based on angle (B). The results allow concluding that players, regardless of level of experience and knowledge, used the same angular interpersonal relationships for performing the pass. In addition, that the efficiency of passing was influenced by the angle (B)

What is in a name? Media responses to the 2017 'Schaumkuss' petition in Switzerland

Chea, Nila January 2019 (has links)
In September 2017, an online petition urged a Swiss candy factory to change the name of its chocolate covered meringue candy from the questionable name “Mohrenkopf” (engl. moor’s head) to anything non-racist. This demand caused a big public outcry and led to the debate over the legitimacy of the name. The aim of this present thesis is to examine the role of the Swiss news media in a discourse of racism by looking at their response to the petition. The data sample of 30 newspaper articles was analyzed with an analytical framework modeled after van Dijk’s socio-cognitive approach to critical discourse analysis. The theoretical framework for the analysis is based on mass communication theories, discourse theory as well as on the concept of commodity and retro racism. The results demonstrated the power of Swiss news media in the debate and showed how deep denial of racism is rooted in Swiss society, which finds expression in retro racism. Ultimately, the findings question the neutrality of Swiss news media in discourses of racism.

Translating conceptual metaphor in Mandela's Long walk to freedom : a cross-cultural comparison

Nokele, Amanda Blossom Bulelwa January 2015 (has links)
Since the publication of the seminal work by Lakoff and Johnson (1980a), Metaphors we live by, countless research has been done on metaphor. This research was conducted because, in the past, metaphor was considered a deviant and poetic device that could be used only by those who were skilful. These scholars offered another view: metaphor is a matter of thought. They showed that linguistic metaphor is the manifestation of conceptual metaphors that are in our subconscious mind and are found in every day language. In other words, metaphors are a revelation of how we think. Linguists and translation scholars claim that it is a challenge to translate metaphor. The main objective of this study is to determine how conceptual metaphor theory can contribute towards the development of translation in African languages. The study seeks to identify conceptual metaphors in Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, which was written in English, and then analyse how these were translated into isiXhosa and isiZulu. This implies that this study involves a corpus. In identifying metaphors from the source text a Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit (MIPVU), which was conceived by Steen and his colleagues at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, was used (Steen et al 2010). ParaConc concordancer was used to investigate and compare how the metaphors were translated. The results showed that most metaphors were translated the same way in isiXhosa and isiZulu, which implies that the translators conceptualised the metaphors in the same way. These results revealed that the translators’ styles were similar. This confirms the fact that the two languages are related. As scholars in earlier research indicated, metaphors in translation pose a problem, yet the translators of Mandela’s book successfully met this challenge. They were able to render the metaphors in their respective languages in an acceptable manner. They tried to adhere to the style of the source text writer, but traces of their own style are evident in the texts. / Linguistics and Modern Languages

The Construction of Refugees in News Headlines : A Critical Discourse Analysis on Rohingya Refugees in Malaysia and Thailand / The Construction of Refugees in News Headlines : A Critical Discourse Analysis on Rohingya Refugees in Malaysia and Thailand

Bach, carina January 2019 (has links)
As news coverage regarding refugees have increased in the past decades, the media representation of refugees in the host countries tend to more or less portray them as national security risk. This study questions the differences between the news discourses in main recipient countries and the less recipient countries asking what factors determine the portrayal. This study seeks to fill the already existing field of research on media representation on Rohingya as available research is conducted on main recipient countries, Myanmar and Bangladesh. The countries chosen for this study are Malaysia and Thailand as they are considered third point of exit countries, they are in same region and as each country has same religious belief as either Myanmar or the Rohingya. Thus, the objective of the study is to understand how the news discourse in Malaysia and Thailand present their ideological perspectives on Rohingya in a subtle way to influence the opinion of the general public. Furthermore, it seeks to reveal how language is used in news reports to frame Rohingya and the underlying factors in which determines the approach of their news reporting. To answer the objective, this research analyses in total 40 news headlines by using the method of Critical Discourse Analysis. Moreover, the results indicate that the news discourse in Malaysia predominantly reports on the Rohingya emphatically and portrays them as active actors in the crisis doing anything to survive the Myanmar violence. The situation of Rohingya is also emphasized in the news discourse in Thailand, though not to same extent as in Malaysia. Thailand rather reports on the crisis itself and how the other actors involved urge and criticize one another. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that portrayal of Rohingya differs depending on who they are to the affected country as well as the international political relationship between the countries affected.

In this work, we propose a description of complement constructions concerning a functional-cognitive approach. This research was motivated by problems related to grammar teaching, which is tightly associated to language structure and formal description. A corpus with narrative texts (novels, short stories and newspaper news) and argumentation texts (opinion articles, popular science texts and academic papers) was composed for the study of complement constructions. Among the subordinate constructions found in the corpus, the most frequent were the ones in which the predicator of the main clause was an elocution verb, a mental verb and the expression “be + adjective”, therefore, the clauses in the position of direct object and subject. According to Functional Discourse Grammar assumptions (HENGEVELD; MACKENZIE, 2008) and the cognitive theory of Conceptual Integration (FAUCONNIER; TURNER, 2002), we observed some subjective aspects encoded by these syntactic constructions, motivated by Speaker‟s communicative intentions and by the way he/she conceptualizes the world around him. In pragmatic terms, the complement clauses we studied correspond to Speaker‟s strategies to demonstrate his commitment degree with what he‟s saying, protecting his/her face, and also assuring the information‟s reliability; in linguistic terms, they show the language suffers some adaptations (BYBEE, 2010) to serve Speaker‟s communicative needs. Concerning grammar teaching – especially syntax teaching – we believe that the focus in the functionality of these constructions can make its teaching richer and more efficient

A perspectiva sóciocognitiva no tratamento temático da informação em bibliotecas universitárias : aspectos inerentes a percepção profissional /

Dal'Evedove, Paula Regina. January 2010 (has links)
Under this component, the focus of studies of social-cognitive approach broadens the perspective to individual sociocultural contexts. Therefore, it is understood that the information profession rooted in the process of thematic treatment of information must be analyzed within its sociocultural context which includes training and professional performance, or professional knowledge and practice conditioned by institutional context. Thus, the actions and thoughts that guide objective and / or professional performance subjectively in thematic treatment information should be investigated for professionals to act in a manner consistent with a greater level of security in the context of university libraries in order to reduce / eliminate inconsistencies or omissions and provide greater consistency for the creation of information products. Thus, it was proposed in a study of social cognitive learning community that performs the processing of thematic information through interactions in the workplace in order to get a professional diagnosis of perception with regard to the steps and products generated within university libraries. Aiming to provide relevant considerations to developing a treatment policy of the documentary material by professional perspective, the specific objectives were: a) highlight the interdisciplinary movement in the contemporary world and, from this view, reflect the cognitive approach in Information Science by strand Cognitive Science, b) understand the thematic research in information science in order to contextualize the thematic treatment of information by the sociocognitive approach, c) check through the process of professional perception thematic treatment of the information in the context ...(Complete abstract click electronic address below) / Mestre

Connectionist modelling in cognitive science: an exposition and appraisal

Janeke, Hendrik Christiaan 28 February 2003 (has links)
This thesis explores the use of artificial neural networks for modelling cognitive processes. It presents an exposition of the neural network paradigm, and evaluates its viability in relation to the classical, symbolic approach in cognitive science. Classical researchers have approached the description of cognition by concentrating mainly on an abstract, algorithmic level of description in which the information processing properties of cognitive processes are emphasised. The approach is founded on seminal ideas about computation, and about algorithmic description emanating, amongst others, from the work of Alan Turing in mathematical logic. In contrast to the classical conception of cognition, neural network approaches are based on a form of neurocomputation in which the parallel distributed processing mechanisms of the brain are highlighted. Although neural networks are generally accepted to be more neurally plausible than their classical counterparts, some classical researchers have argued that these networks are best viewed as implementation models, and that they are therefore not of much relevance to cognitive researchers because information processing models of cognition can be developed independently of considerations about implementation in physical systems. In the thesis I argue that the descriptions of cognitive phenomena deriving from neural network modelling cannot simply be reduced to classical, symbolic theories. The distributed representational mechanisms underlying some neural network models have interesting properties such as similarity-based representation, content-based retrieval, and coarse coding which do not have straightforward equivalents in classical systems. Moreover, by placing emphasis on how cognitive processes are carried out by brain-like mechanisms, neural network research has not only yielded a new metaphor for conceptualising cognition, but also a new methodology for studying cognitive phenomena. Neural network simulations can be lesioned to study the effect of such damage on the behaviour of the system, and these systems can be used to study the adaptive mechanisms underlying learning processes. For these reasons, neural network modelling is best viewed as a significant theoretical orientation in the cognitive sciences, instead of just an implementational endeavour. / Psychology / D.
