Museum Educator as Advocate for the Visitor: Organizing the Texas Fashion Collection's 25th Anniversary Exhibition Suiting the Modern Woman / Suiting the Modern Woman

Utz, Laura Lee 08 1900 (has links)
Suiting the Modern Woman documented the evolution of women's power dressing in the 20th century by featuring four major components: thirteen period suit silhouettes, the power suits of twenty-eight influential and successful high profile Texas women, a look at the career and creations of Dallas designer, Richard Brooks, who created the professional wardrobe for former Texas Governor Ann Richards, and a media room which showcased images of working women in television and movie clips, advertisements, cartoons, and fashion guidebooks. The exhibition served as an application for contemporary museum education theory. Acting as both the exhibition coordinator and educator provided an opportunity to develop interpretative strategies and create a meaningful visitor experience.

How teachers enact learning materials in the classroom to ensure effective teaching and learning process?

Tsimane, Tebogo 22 May 2015 (has links)
The South African government spends huge sums of funds on schools with an aim to redress past inequalities. Schools receive resource budget allocations to exclusively procure learning materials to ensure that the government’s aim is realised. This study examines availability and enactment of learning materials to enhance effective curriculum delivery. Four township public ordinary primary schools participated in this study. Focus was mainly on Grade 3 home language lessons. I used the case study methods to interview one teacher from each school and scrutinized their documents to establish what learning materials they have in their possession. Additionally I observed and analysed three lessons per educator. Analysis across the cases reveals different collections and variations in usage of learning materials. The former covers the standard, mix and match, and limited collections. Whereas the latter refers to the textbook bound, productive blend and the haphazard approaches. Significantly, the study also explored principles in line with the “ideal teacher”- under which desired results can be achieved.

Utilizing wireless-based data collection units for automated vehicle movement data collection

Saeedi, Amirali 22 February 2013 (has links)
There are many different types of automatic data collection technologies that have been used in transportation system applications such as pneumatic tubes, radar, video cameras, inductive loops detectors, wireless toll tags, and global positioning systems (GPS). Nevertheless, there are still multiple examples of important and helpful transportation system data that still require manual data collection. In this research, the automatic transportation system data collection capabilities are expanded by enhancements in the use of wireless communications technology. In recent years, smartphones and electronic peripherals with wireless communication capabilities have become very popular. Many of these electronic devices include a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi wireless radio, whose presence in a vehicle can be used as a vehicle identifier. With wireless on-board devices available now and in the future, this research explores how roadside data collection units (DCUs) communicating with on-board devices can be used for the automated data collection of important road system data such as intersection performance data. To this end, two approaches for wirelessly collecting vehicle movement over a short road segment were explored. One approach utilized the collection and triangulation of wireless signal strength data, and demonstrated the capabilities and limitations of this approach. The second approach focused on developing methods for utilizing wireless signal strength data for vehicle point detection and identification. The vehicle point detection methods developed were applied to collect travel time data over signalized arterial roads, and to collect intersection delay data for a three way stop controlled intersection. The results from these case studies indicate a significant advantage in the proposed data collection system over the existing data collection approaches presented in the literature. / Graduation date: 2013

Java in eingebetteten Systemen

Gatzka, Stephan 13 July 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Modern, object oriented languages do not play an important role when developing software for embedded systems. There are many reasons for it, most often an inadequate performance and a greater memory demand are mentioned. In spite of the fact that Java has many features suitable for embedded systems, Java often faces the prejudice to consume too much resources in systems with limited processing power and memory. This work is a contribution to diminish this prejudices. It presents techniques to limit the memory demands of a Java Virtual Machine and to effectively cope with limited computing power. Many of the presented methods and algorithms are implemented in the Kertasarie VM, a JVM designed to run in embedded systems.Due to the fact of increasing network capabilities embedded systems often face the problem of a modern, abstract and efficient communication. Therefore the second emphasis of this work is put on the comparison of object oriented middleware architectures, especially Java-RMI. An own implementation for embedded systems is also presented.

Bevarandet av bibliotekssamlingar : Samlingsförvaltning på några svenska universitetsbibliotek under 2000-talet / Preserving Library Collections : Collection Management at Some Swedish University Libraries during the 21st Century

Harju, Jenna January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis in Library and Information Science (LIS) is to examine how five Swedish university libraries work with collection management using a critical discourse analysis (CDA). University libraries hold large, valuable and often unique materials in the collections. Making decisions on what to preserve has for centuries been a task that libraries have been relied on to perform. The thesis aims to discuss how the university libraries through policy documents work with collection management and preservation of library materials and if there is a need of a national preservation policy. The method used in this thesis is Norman Faircloughs critical discourse analysis (CDA) with its three dimensional analytical framework that focuses on the text, the discourse practice and the social practice. The qualitative methods used are interviews and a textanalysis of policy documents. The result of the analysis revealed that the majority of the libraries lack substantial policies in collection management. The focus has instead been on a more user-oriented approach regarding access and acquisition of library materials. A central conclusion is that there is a need of a national collection policy regarding preservation of library collections.

Quand l'Amérique collectionnait des cloîtres gothiques : les ensembles de Trie-sur-Baïse, Bonnefont-en-Comminges et Montréjeau / When America collected gothic cloisters : the cloisters of Trie-sur-Baise, Bonnefont-en-Comminges and Montréjeau

Brugeat, Céline 18 June 2016 (has links)
Three cloisters attributed to the monasteries of "Trie-sur-Baise", " Bonnefont-en-Comminges" (the Cloisters, New York) and "Montréjeau" (Paradise Island, Bahamas) were purchased by American collectors and rebuilt, during the XXth century, in North America. The modern assembly of such monuments generates interest on the taste of these American amateurs, from the beginning of XXth century, for medieval European architecture. While respectively attributed to the monasteries of "Trie-sur-Baise", "Bonnefont-en-Comminges" (the Cloisters, New York) and "Montréjeau" (Paradise Island, Bahamas), the initial attribution states that the stones were from central Pyrenees monasteries, whose ruins were scattered throughout ancient times : the Hundred-year war as well as the wars of religion, the gradual desertion of religious institutions by their communities during the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries and, at last, the alienation of their properties during the Revolution seriously damaged the integrity of monastic buildings. However, during the post-revolutionary period until the early XXth century, many discrete transactions between individuals and antique dealers further took away the stones real origin from the collective memory, especially cloisters sculptures coveted for their ornament. Identifying the cloisters provenance was the main subject of this study. The three carved marbles present various iconography ; while the "Bonnefont-en-Comminges" and "Montréjeau" ensembles both show stylized foliage ornaments, the "Trie-sur-Baise" cloister depicts original figurative scenes. Carrying out an in-depth study of these sculptures made it possible to accurately associate the cloisters to their original architectural set and production context.

Kolektivní systém nakládání s mobilnimi telefony a jeho dopady na životní prostředí / COLLECTION SCHEME OF MOBILE PHONES AND ITS IMPACT ON ENVIRONMENT

Švančarová, Markéta January 2016 (has links)
The issue of the increasing amount of e-waste is a phenomenon of the 21st century. The amount of EoL mobile phones is growing rapidly but only a small amount is recycled. The thesis examines the environmental impacts of the Remobil project concerning the collection of phones that go to recycle. The impacts of the project are evaluated by the LCA method. Life cycle assessment is an important method of assessing the product that is part of decision-making at the international, national and local level, within the government and private sectors. The method provides complex outputs that can be comparable to other results. Modelling the impacts of the Remobil project provided a number of results. The comparison of the collecting boxes showed that the least impact on the impact category was caused by polypropylene boxes while the stainless steel boxes caused the greatest impact. The biggest influence on impact categories within the project was caused by transport, which was quite excessive due to the pilot phase of the project. It is also important to note the higher level of effort required for the per- kilogram collection of small electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) waste, such as mobile phones, compared to the collection of large EEE waste, such as washing machines. The Remobil project and recycling of...

Refuse collection management practices in the Buffalo City Municipality

Damane, Mcebisi January 2012 (has links)
The ineffective and inefficient management and collection of municipal solid waste is a significant problem in cities of many developing countries. South Africa as a developing country is also faced with the same problem. Buffalo City Municipality with its fast growing urban population is not immune from the problem. Due to continuing population growth, urbanisation, industrialisation and higher consumption levels which started after the demise of the previous legislations which stifled the advancement of black communities, the generation and management of municipal solid waste in developing countries is likely to worsen. The uncollected waste and rampant littering generates pollution and poses risks to human health and the environment. Regulations guiding the treatment and the disposal of waste are not followed to the letter by authorities. There are no measures in place to ensure that the environment is sustained, and even if there are they are not fully implemented. This affects municipalities negatively in various aspects. Tourism that is known to boost ailing and weak local economies is affected. Properties are devaluated and potential developers turn their backs on municipalities that are not well managed. It is the low-income communities that suffer the brunt of the inefficiency and poor service delivery. This status quo is not acceptable eighteen years after the attainment of democracy and the adoption of the Constitution in South Africa. This study analyses the challenges and factors that cause Buffalo City Municipality (BCM) not to deliver services efficiently and successfully in respect of waste management. It also attempts to check alternatives and solutions as gathered from other cities in a similar predicament. Municipalities are encouraged to adopt Local Economic Development (LED) principles and establish public- public partnerships and private- public partnerships thereby utilizing communities in refuse collection and waste management.

Analýza dopravních dat s vazbou na rizika v odpadovém hospodářství / Analysis of traffic data related to risks in waste management

Vaníček, Filip January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to prepare real data for subsequent optimization of the collection plan using advanced VRP („Vehicle Routing Problem “) algorithms. The diploma thesis is motivated by the project Strategic Partnership for Environmental Technologies and Energy Production. The output focuses on indeterminate factors that have a major risk for subsequent operations. These are economic, environmental and social risks (overcrowded containers). Another result is the implementation and processing of the time-consuming passage of all streets, the estimation of the speed of the collection (garbage) truck for the subsequent optimization of the route and the estimation of the mean value of the filling of individual collection containers.
