The issue of the increasing amount of e-waste is a phenomenon of the 21st century. The amount of EoL mobile phones is growing rapidly but only a small amount is recycled. The thesis examines the environmental impacts of the Remobil project concerning the collection of phones that go to recycle. The impacts of the project are evaluated by the LCA method. Life cycle assessment is an important method of assessing the product that is part of decision-making at the international, national and local level, within the government and private sectors. The method provides complex outputs that can be comparable to other results. Modelling the impacts of the Remobil project provided a number of results. The comparison of the collecting boxes showed that the least impact on the impact category was caused by polypropylene boxes while the stainless steel boxes caused the greatest impact. The biggest influence on impact categories within the project was caused by transport, which was quite excessive due to the pilot phase of the project. It is also important to note the higher level of effort required for the per- kilogram collection of small electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) waste, such as mobile phones, compared to the collection of large EEE waste, such as washing machines. Refuse collection management practices in the Buffalo City Municipality

The ineffective and inefficient management and collection of municipal solid waste is a significant problem in cities of many developing countries. South Africa as a developing country is also faced with the same problem. Buffalo City Municipality with its fast growing urban population is not immune from the problem. Due to continuing population growth, urbanisation, industrialisation and higher consumption levels which started after the demise of the previous legislations which stifled the advancement of black communities, the generation and management of municipal solid waste in developing countries is likely to worsen. The uncollected waste and rampant littering generates pollution and poses risks to human health and the environment. Regulations guiding the treatment and the disposal of waste are not followed to the letter by authorities. There are no measures in place to ensure that the environment is sustained, and even if there are they are not fully implemented. This affects municipalities negatively in various aspects. Tourism that is known to boost ailing and weak local economies is affected. Properties are devaluated and potential developers turn their backs on municipalities that are not well managed. It is the low-income communities that suffer the brunt of the inefficiency and poor service delivery. This status quo is not acceptable eighteen years after the attainment of democracy and the adoption of the Constitution in South Africa. This study analyses the challenges and factors that cause Buffalo City Municipality (BCM) not to deliver services efficiently and successfully in respect of waste management. It also attempts to check alternatives and solutions as gathered from other cities in a similar predicament. Municipalities are encouraged to adopt Local Economic Development (LED) principles and establish public- public partnerships and private- public partnerships thereby utilizing communities in refuse collection and waste management.

The aim of this thesis is to prepare real data for subsequent optimization of the collection plan using advanced VRP („Vehicle Routing Problem “) algorithms. The diploma thesis is motivated by the project Strategic Partnership for Environmental Technologies and Energy Production. The output focuses on indeterminate factors that have a major risk for subsequent operations. These are economic, environmental and social risks (overcrowded containers). Another result is the implementation and processing of the time-consuming passage of all streets, the estimation of the speed of the collection (garbage) truck for the subsequent optimization of the route and the estimation of the mean value of the filling of individual collection containers.

Majstorović, Z. Utsöndring av stenbildande substanser i urin – kan stickprov er-sätta dygnsmängder? Examensarbete i Biomedicinsk laboratorievetenskap 15 högskolepoäng. Malmö högskola: Hälsa och samhälle, Utbildningsområde Bio-medicinsk laboratorievetenskap, 2011.Syfte. Utredning av njurstenspatienter omfattar alltid undersökning av utsönd-ringen av stenbildande substanser i urin. Samlingen av urin under ett dygn hos njurstenpatienter innebär ofta problem för patienten eftersom det inte är så sällan att de glömmer samla urin i dunken eller samlar för lång eller kort tid. Syftet med min undersökning är att undersöka om det finns alternativ till att samla urin under 24 timmar i de fall där utsöndringen av stenbildande substanser är konstant över dygnet. Frågeställningen är om utsöndringen av stenbildande substanser kan upp-skattas genom att relatera deras koncentration i urin till koncentrationen av kreati-nin i urin eftersom utsöndringen av kreatinin är relativt konstant över dygnet. I så fall bör koncentrationen av stenbildande substanser i urin kunna relateras till kon-centrationen av kreatinin i urin på samma sätt som vid narkotikaanalys. Metod. Försökspersonerna samlade all urin i exakt 24 timmar. Den första urinportionen sparades i ett separat kärl medan all efterföljande urin samlades i en separat dunk . Efter ca en vecka gjordes en ny urinsamling, denna gång bara i en dunk. Dygnsut-söndringarna jämfördes med varandra och med kreatininindex i stickprovet. Re-sultat. Ett starkt samband fanns mellan kreatininindex av kalcium och dygnut-söndringen av kalcium. Sambandet var något mindre starkt för magnesium och saknades för fosfat och kalium. Slutsats. Resultaten talar mot att kreatininindex generellt kan användas för att skatta utsöndringen av njurstensbildande substanser. Däremot verkar kreatininindex relativt väl förutsäga utsöndringen av kalcium och i viss mån även magnesium. / Majstorović, Z. Clinical investigation of kidney stone patients always includes moni-toring of the secretion of stone-forming substances in the urine. However, 24 h urine collection is difficult for the patient and prone to error. The purpose of this study is to examine whether there are alternatives to the collecting of urine under the period of 24 hours in cases where the secretion of stone-forming substances is constant across days. The question is whether the excretion of stone-forming sub-stances can be estimated by relating the concentration of urine to the creatinine concentration of urine, since the excretion of creatinine is relatively constant over a day. If so, the concentration of stone-forming substances in urine could be relat-ed to the concentration of creatinine in urine in the same way as drug analyses commonly are. Method. The subjects collected a 24h collection of urine. The first urine portion was stored in a container, while all subsequent urine was collected in a separate container. After about a week, another timed collection of urine was performed, but this time only in one container. The 24 h solute excretions were compared to each other and to the solute creatinine index. Results. A strong cor-relation was found between the creatinine index of calcium and the 24 h excretion of calcium. A somewhat weaker correlation was found for magnesium and a lack of correlation for phosphate and potassium. Conclusion. Results indicate that creatinine indexes in general do not predict 24 h excretions. However, creatinine index appears to predict the excretion of calcium and, to some extent, magnesium.

Life-cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Water Footprint of Residential Waste Collection and Management Systems

Three troublesome issues concerning residential curbside collection (RCC) and municipal solid waste (MSW) management systems in the United States motivated this research. First, reliance upon inefficient collection and scheduling procedures negatively affect RCC efficiency, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and cost. Second, the neglected impact of MSW management practices on water resources. Third, the implications of alternative fuels on the environmental and financial performance of waste collection where fuel plays a significant rule. The goal of this study was to select the best RCC program, MSW management practice, and collection fuel. For this study, field data were collected for RCC programs across the State of Florida. The garbage and recyclables generation rates were compared based on garbage collection frequency and use of dual-stream (DS) or single-stream (SS) recyclables collection system. The assessment of the collection programs was evaluated based on GHG emissions, while for the first time, the water footprint (WFP) was calculated for the most commonly used MSW management practices namely landfilling, combustion, and recycling. In comparing alternative collection fuels, two multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) tools, TOPSIS and SAW, were used to rank fuel alternatives for the waste collection industry with respect to a multi-level environmental and financial decision matrix. The results showed that SS collection systems exhibited more than a two-fold increase in recyclables generation rates, and a ~2.2-fold greater recycling efficiency compared to DS. The GHG emissions associated with the studied collection programs were estimated to be between 36 and 51 kg CO2eq per metric ton of total household waste (garbage and recyclables), depending on the garbage collection frequency, recyclables collection system (DS or SS) and recyclables compaction. When recyclables offsets were considered, the GHG emissions associated with programs using SS were estimated between -760 and -560, compared to between -270 and -210 kg CO2eq per metric ton of total waste for DS programs. In comparing the WFP of MSW management practices, the results showed that the WFP of waste landfilling can be reduced through implementing bioreactor landfilling. The WFP of electricity generated from waste combustion was less than the electricity from landfill gas. Overall, the WFP of electricity from MSW management practices was drastically less than some renewable energy sources. In comparing the WFP offsets of recyclables, the recycling of renewable commodities, e.g. paper, contributed to the highest WFP offsets compared to other commodities, mainly due to its raw material acquisition high WFPs. This suggests that recycling of renewable goods is the best management practice to reduce the WFP of MSW management. Finally, the MCDA of alternative fuel technologies revealed that diesel is still the best option, followed by hydraulic-hybrid waste collection vehicles (WCVs), then landfill gas (LFG) sourced natural gas, fossil natural gas and biodiesel. The elimination of the fueling station criterion from the financial criteria ranked LFG-sourced natural gas as the best option; suggesting that LFG sourced natural gas is the best alternative to fuel WCV when accessible. In conclusion, field data suggest that RCC system design can significantly impact recyclables generation rate and efficiency, and consequently determine environmental and economic impact of collection systems. The WFP concept was suggested as a method to systematically assess the impact of MSW management practices on water resources. A careful consideration of the WFP of MSW management practices and energy recovered from MSW management facilities is essential for the sustainable appropriation of water resources and development.

Os sistemas de gerenciamento de resíduos sólidos urbanos prevêem fases que envolvem desde a sua geração até a disposição final. A atividade de coleta seletiva de materiais previamente segregados é uma parte importante deste gerenciamento. Os custos envolvidos neste tipo de coleta, normalmente mais elevados que os custos da coleta regular, fazem com que esta prática não seja efetuada pela maioria dos municípios brasileiros. Esses municípios tampouco são beneficiados por parcerias privadas, uma vez que o retorno financeiro gerado pela venda do material reciclável geralmente não cobre os custos de coleta, triagem e transporte. A partir deste panorama, este trabalho busca oferecer uma contribuição para o melhor entendimento dos custos envolvidos na operação de coleta destes resíduos. Neste trabalho foram analisados os custos de três sistemas de coleta seletiva de resíduos sólidos domiciliares: por pontos de entrega voluntária (PEVs), porta-a-porta, e um sistema híbrido entre os dois anteriores. A análise levou em conta os custos de transporte, que incluem custos operacionais e custos de capital para cada uma das alternativas. Um SIG-T foi utilizado para determinar a distância percorrida pelos veículos e uma metodologia para a determinação do custo total foi desenvolvida em função da quilometragem percorrida e quantidade de mão-de-obra e equipamentos utilizados. Conclui-se que o melhor método de coleta sempre estará intimamente ligado às características do local em que será implantado. Comparando os três sistemas, observou-se que para a área e para as condições apresentadas neste estudo, o sistema porta-a-porta se mostrou o mais eficaz / Urban solid waste management comprehends phases from its generation to its final disposal. The costs involved in this type of collection, usually higher than conventional collection costs, make this practice not so used by Brazilian municipalities. From this point of view, this work seeks for a contribution to the best understanding of the involved costs in the collection operation activity. In this work the costs of three collection systems were studied: by voluntary delivery locations (VDLs), door-to-door, and a hybrid system between the preceding ones. The analysis took for granted the transportation costs to which one of the alternatives, which include operational costs and capital costs. A GIS-Trans had been used to define the traveled distance by the collection vehicles, and a cost determination methodology was developed as function of the traveled distance and the amount of labor and equipments used. It’s concluded that the choice of the best collection method will always be related with implementation area peculiarities. Comparing the three collection systems described above, the door-to-door system is showed to be more efficient for the presented area and conditions assumed for this study

The library collection is absolutely unique in its main objective that is to collect all Czech and foreign bohemical printed and non-printed documents, including journals since 1901. This thesis aims to introduce this collection both in a historical and current context, especially via library line or through ongoing projects in cooperation with the CR NKF. In the end, the work exaplains long-term protection and preservation of modern library collections in foreign countries and compares it with the situation in the NKF in the Czech Republic.

La collection comme vivier réseaux réels et virtuels au sein de la collection "Les poètes du jour" (1963-1975) des Éditions du Jour

Le présent mémoire vise à démontrer que la collection « Les Poètes du Jour » (1963-1975) des Éditions du Jour constitue un véritable vivier et qu'elle abrite des réseaux réels et virtuels, qui peuvent être décelés grâce à l'analyse des caractéristiques socioprofessionnelles des auteurs et du paratexte des oeuvres qui la composent. Nous entendons dévoiler les enjeux relatifs à chacun de ces types de réseaux. En plus d'un historique des Éditions du Jour, le premier chapitre propose un rappel des parcours de Jacques Hébert, directeur des Éditions du Jour, de Gatien Lapointe et de Michel Beaulieu, qui ont joué un rôle déterminant dans l'évolution des « Poètes du Jour », ainsi que de Marcel et François Hébert, directeurs de la collection durant ses dernières années d'existence. Leur formation, leur trajectoire dans le champ littéraire québécois et surtout leurs liens avec de (futurs) auteurs de la collection sont décrits et analysés. Les toutes premières manifestations de réseaux au sein de la collection sont ainsi circonscrites.Le deuxième chapitre est consacré à l'analyse des liens et réseaux réels proprement dits. L'examen des caractéristiques socioprofessionnelles des auteurs démontre la présence de cohortes et de générations de poètes, ou encore de réseaux réels, à l'intérieur des « Poètes du Jour ». Or, le fait de prendre part à un réseau se traduit toujours par un gain de capital (symbolique, économique, social) pour l'auteur concerné : publication chez un éditeur reconnu, obtention d'un poste au sein d'une institution, accès au réseau de relations d'un ami, notamment. La question des liens et réseaux virtuels formés aux « Poètes du Jour » vient compléter cette étude dans le troisième et dernier chapitre. L'analyse des principaux éléments paratextuels des recueils de la collection mettra en évidence les affinités (esthétiques, voire idéologiques) et les accointances qui se tissent entre les auteurs de la collection ou encore entre les « Poètes du Jour » et d'autres poètes québécois. L'analyse des préfaces, des dédicaces, des épigraphes et de la réception critique indique que les liens et réseaux virtuels ne sont jamais neutres et remplissent une fonction particulière : défense et légitimation d'une poétique dominante dans le champ littéraire, accréditation des nouvelles écritures au détriment de celles relevant de l'arrière-garde, promotion d'un jeune poète, inscription d'une oeuvre dans une tradition littéraire établie, etc. Notre double analyse, quantitative et qualitative, mettra en évidence que la collection « Les Poètes du Jour » est plus qu'un simple ensemble de titres : elle est en fait un véritable lieu de rencontre et de rassemblement pour de nombreux poètes, plus spécifiquement ceux de la jeune génération, qui s'y rencontrent et s'y côtoient. Plusieurs d'entre eux ont notamment étudié dans les mêmes établissements scolaires, se connaissent à leur milieu de travail ou alors convergent vers les mêmes lieux éditoriaux, ce qui facilite la formation de liens et réseaux réels aux « Poètes du Jour ». L'accumulation de différents éléments paratextuels indique la formation de liens et de réseaux virtuels, où des écritures (la « poésie du pays », le formalisme, l'écriture des femmes et la contre-culture) émergent et sont théorisées.
