The historiographical writing was based on dialectical historical materialism as a perspective for the production of historical reading, including the categories proposed by Antonio Gramsci: organic intellectuals, relations of force and hegemony. The documents analyzed in this work were gathered from literature review, including articles, books, dissertations, theses as well as from the mapping of events of the area of psychology such as the Mostras Nacionais de Práticas (National Exhibits of Practices) and editions of the Congresso Nacional da Psicologia (National Congress of Psychology), produced by Sistema Conselhos. Professional projects express principles of society projects and can be constructed by any category from an ideal image about itself and the effect it wishes to produce in the world. As a professional project, social commitment presents three dialectically interwoven dimensions: it is at the same time the condition of the project by providing the philosophical base in the sense of an organic ideology to the interests of the working classes, evidencing the alignment to a society project, as an alternative to the capitalist order; an element of the project, its public face, when it presents itself as a motto subsidized by the representative entities; and the broad designation of the project, which aggregates different political strategies to consolidate this perspective. Social commitment indicates the critical perspective as transversal stance to different personages and historical moments: initially, criticism towards type of population served and workplace; subsequently, towards instruments, theoretical models and methods used; and most recently in the discussion of the feasibility and risks taken by its adoption as a project in psychology. The constitution of the historical course of social commitment enabled us to conclude that this project intends to contribute to the transformation of society and, in its development, substantially transforms psychology / O presente trabalho apresenta-se como um estudo historiográfico que tem por objetivo analisar o compromisso social da psicologia brasileira sob a ótica do desenvolvimento desse projeto profissional, entendido como um projeto crítico. A escrita historiográfica baseou-se no materialismo histórico dialético como perspectiva para a produção da leitura histórica, incluindo as categorias propostas por Antonio Gramsci: intelectuais orgânicos, relações de força e hegemonia. Os documentos analisados foram reunidos a partir de revisão de literatura, incluindo artigos, livros, dissertações, teses e do mapeamento de eventos da área da psicologia como as Mostras Nacionais de Práticas e as edições do Congresso Nacional da Psicologia, produzidos pelo Sistema Conselhos. Os projetos profissionais expressam princípios de projetos societários e podem ser construídos por qualquer categoria a partir de uma imagem ideal sobre si mesma e do efeito que deseja produzir no mundo. Como projeto profissional, o compromisso social apresenta três dimensões dialeticamente imbricadas: é, ao mesmo tempo, a condição do projeto, por fornecer a base filosófica no sentido de uma ideologia orgânica aos interesses das classes trabalhadoras evidenciando o alinhamento a um projeto societário alternativo à ordem capitalista; um elemento do projeto, sua face pública, quando se apresenta como um lema subsidiado pelas entidades representativas; e a designação ampla do projeto, agregadora de diferentes estratégias políticas para a consolidação dessa perspectiva. O compromisso social indica a perspectiva crítica como postura transversal aos diferentes atores e momentos históricos: inicialmente, uma crítica ao tipo de população atendida e ao local de trabalho; posteriormente aos instrumentos, modelos teóricos e métodos utilizados; e mais recentemente, na discussão sobre a viabilidade e os riscos colocados pela sua adoção como projeto na psicologia. A sample of 113 employees was selected from different dealerships. Thereafter an investigation was done to establish which performance values were meaningful predictors of organisation commitment. It was found that the performance values competition and material gain were meaningful predictors of affective organisation commitment, and the performance values material gain and excellence were meaningful predictors of continuity organisation commitment, but that none of the performance values which are contemporarily recognised world-wide were meaningful predictors of normative organisation commitment. This has far-reaching implications for South African motor dealers. It was also apparent from the results that the performance values competition, material gain and excellence can be utilized in an integrated way by management of motor dealers in order to ensure optimal utilization of their cumulative impact on organisation commitment. / Industrial psychology / M.Com. Expectations in romantic relationships : associations with cultural background and perceived quality of relationship

The theories of social cognition and personal constructs compose the theoretical backdrop to this dissertation which deals with people's expectations regarding romantic partners and relationships.Five women were interviewed and a qualitative analysis undertaken and discussed with a view to elucidating the influence of one's parents, cultural background and individual identity on the development and functioning of expectations. These expectation are based on beliefs about men and relationships in general and about healthy and unhealthy relationships in particular. Attension is given to the role of relationship beliefs and expectations in evaluations of romantic relationships and the consequences of such evaluations for relationship satisfaction and commitment. It is concluded that expectations play an important role in the process of partner and relationship eva,uation and thus, in the outcome of relationships. Parental and cultural influences are found to play an important part in shaping individual values and expetations, albeit in an indirect manner. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Relationships among intensity of stressors, chronic stressors, perceived autonomy support, coping and nurses' affective commitment to their current jobs

Hospitals are experiencing a critical shortage of qualified registered nurses. While traditional research explored reasons why nurses choose to leave their jobs, this study examined why nurses may choose to stay. Inter-relationships among cognitive, affective, and demographic variables and their impact on hospital nurses’ affective commitment to their current jobs were assessed. Participants included 134 full-time registered nurses in Dallas, Texas. They were asked about their tenure and educational degree, and completed the following measures online: Nurses’ Affective Commitment to Their Current Jobs; Nursing Stress Scale; Work Climate Questionnaire; and Coping Response Inventory. The results supported previous findings that nurses’ affective commitment to their current jobs was positively related to perceived autonomy support, percentage of reported coping approach strategies, and number of years worked in their current hospital unit. Furthermore, nurses’ affective commitment was negatively related to the two stress-related variables: number of chronic stressors (NCS) and intensity of stressors. In the primary analysis of the proposed Model of Nurses’ Affective Commitment to Their Current Jobs, a significant three-way interaction was found among perceived autonomy support and percentage of reported coping approach strategies (RCAS) on the relationship between NCS, and nurses’ affective commitment. A post hoc analysis found that nurses with a low level of RCAS had a significant change in the relationship between NCS and nurses’ affective commitment, depending on their level of perceived autonomy support. There was a negative relationship between NCS and nurses’ affective commitment for nurses’ with low levels of perceived autonomy support; whereas, there was a positive relationship between NCS and nurses’ affective commitment for nurses’ with high levels of perceived autonomy support. In addition, a secondary analysis on the model revealed that, for nurses working in their units less than six years, there was a varying degree of a positive relationship between RCAS and nurses’ affective commitment to their current jobs depending on the level of perceived autonomy support. However for nurses working more than six years, there was a negative relationship between RCAS and nurses’ affective commitment to their current jobs for nurses with low levels of perceived autonomy support. / text

The impact of organisational culture on organisational commitment

A review of the literature reveals that organisational commitment is an outcome of organisational culture, when reviewing the definitions, theoretical development and models of these two concepts. The integration of organisational commitment with organisational culture indicates that there is a need for a scientific study to determine the relationship between these two variables. The empirical study involved the participation of 371 respondents in an organisation. A survey was conducted using the organisational commitment scale and the organisational culture questionnaire to determine the relationship between organisational culture and organisational commitment. The results suggest that organisational culture has an effect on organisational commitment. The relationship between the coping resources and psychological career resources of graduates

This study explored both the relationship between coping resources (as measured by the Coping Resources Inventory) and psychological career resources (as measured by the Psychological Career Resources Inventory) and also whether individuals from different gender and employment status groups (part-time work experience versus no work experience) differ significantly regarding their coping resources and psychological career resources. A cross-sectional survey design and quantitative statistical procedures were used to analyse the data which was obtained from a purposive non-probability sample of N = 197 early career unemployed, black graduates. The results showed significant positive associations between psychological career resources and coping resources. It also emerged that the male and female participants differed significantly with regard to their emotional, spiritual and physical coping resources and the psychological career resources of career harmonisers and career drivers. In addition, it was found that those participants who had part-time work experience displayed a significantly higher need for career venturing and also manifested higher behavioural adaptability than those who had no work experience. Sources of work stress, psychological attachment and attitudes towards change : constructing a psychological profile for change interventions

This research focused on constructing a psychological profile for change interventions by investigating both the interrelationships and overall relationships between work stress (as the independent variable), psychological attachment (job embeddedness and organisational commitment) (as the mediating variables) and attitudes towards change (as the dependent variable). A non-experimental cross-sectional quantitative survey design approach using standardised valid and reliable measuring instruments (Sources of Job Stress Scale, Organisational Commitment Questionnaire, Job Embededdness Questionnaire, Attitudes towards Change Questionnaire) was used on a non-probability purposive sample of employees from one of the largest, fast-moving consumer goods companies in South Africa (N = 350), ranging from administrative to executive level. Bivariate correlations showed a statistically positive inter-relationship between sources of work stress, psychological attachment (job embeddedness and organisational commitment) and attitudes towards change. A canonical correlation analysis indicated a significant overall relationship between the sources of work stress, psychological attachment (job embeddedness and organisational commitment) and attitudes towards change dispositions. Mediation modelling revealed the mediating role of psychological attachment (organisational commitment and job embeddedness) in the sources of work stress and attitudes towards change relationship. Moderated hierarchical regression analyses showed that age and gender significantly moderated the relationship between individuals’ sources of work stress and their attitudes towards change dispositions. Tests for mean differences revealed that significant differences exist between age and sources of work stress, affective and continuance commitment, fit and sacrifice embeddedness. Differences exist between race groups’ affective and continuance commitment. Job security is a concern across all employment levels in the organisation. Individuals at an executive, upper administrative and administrative level revealed significant differences in terms of their continuance commitment. Cognitive and behavioural attitudes towards change did not differ significantly across all employment levels. At a theoretical level, this study developed an understanding of the cognitive, affective, conative and interpersonal behavioural dimensions of the hypothesised psychological profile to manage change. At an empirical level, it developed an empirically tested psychological profile for change interventions in terms of the various behavioural dimensions.
