False Words Seem True: The Power of Truth Bias in shaping Memory and Judgment Pantazi, Myrto 01 February 2017 (has links)
Language is one of the main means of acquiring information about the world. An important debate in social psychology, linguistics and philosophy is how we come to believe information contained in statements we hear and read. Are we capable of assessing it and filtering it out, in case it is erroneous? Or do we rather tend to believe it? The experimental studies described in this thesis suggest that we strongly tend to believe statements we hear and read, even if we are aware of their falsity. Truth bias, as this tendency has been called, was detected both at the level of people’s memory and at the level of their judgments. Specifically, in a fake judicial context participants who read or listened to statements explicitly designated as true or false about a perpetrator tended to misremember false statements as true. Additionally, they were influenced by the false statements’ content in judgments they made about the perpetrators. Chapter 1 encompasses 5 Studies, all pointing to a strong truth bias, that, contrary to what is often assumed, may operate even in the absence of increased cognitive load (Studies 1–2). Studies 3–5 in Chapter 1 were methodologically-oriented, primarily aimed at testing the validity of the generalized truth bias established in Studies 1–2. Chapter 2 examines potential vigilance triggers that may reduce the truth bias. Manipulating the source of the false information (by informing participants that the speaker is either a defense attorney or prosecutor; Study 1), rendering participants accountable for their judgments (Study 2) or asking real judges to accomplish our experimental task (Study 3) did not reduce the truth bias. Nevertheless, offering participants financial incentives for providing an accurate judgment, eliminated both the memory-based and the judgment-based truth bias (Study 4). Les codes de simulation devenant plus performants et plus interactifs, il est important de suivre l'avancement d'une simulation in-situ, en réalisant non seulement la visualisation mais aussi l'analyse des données en même temps qu'elles sont générées. Suivre l'avancement ou réaliser le post-traitement des données de simulation in-situ présente un avantage évident par rapport à l'approche conventionnelle consistant à sauvegarder—et à recharger—à partir d'un système de fichiers; le temps et l'espace pris pour écrire et ensuite lire les données à partir du disque est un goulet d'étranglement significatif pour la simulation et les étapes consécutives de post-traitement. Par ailleurs, la simulation peut être arrêtée, modifiée, ou potentiellement pilotée, conservant ainsi les ressources CPU.Nous présentons dans cette thèse une approche de couplage faible qui permet à une simulation de transférer des données vers un serveur de visualisation via l'utilisation de fichiers en mémoire. Nous montrons dans cette étude comment l'interface, implémentée au-dessus d'un format hiérarchique de données (HDF5), nous permet de réduire efficacement le goulet d'étranglement introduit par les I/Os en utilisant des stratégies efficaces de communication et de configuration des données. Pour le pilotage, nous présentons une interface qui permet non seulement la modification de simples paramètres, mais également le remaillage complet de grilles ou des opérations impliquant la régénérationde grandeurs numériques sur le domaine entier de calcul d'être effectués. Cette approche, testée et validée sur deux cas-tests industriels, est suffisamment générique pour qu'aucune connaissance particulière du modèle de données sous-jacent ne soit requise. / As simulation codes become more powerful and more interactive, it is increasingly desirable to monitor a simulation in-situ, performing not only visualization but also analysis of the incoming data as it is generated. Monitoring or post-processing simulation data in-situ has obvious advantage over the conventional approach of saving to—and reloading data from—the file system; the time and space it takes to write and then read the data from disk is a significant bottleneck for both the simulation and subsequent post-processing steps. Furthermore, the simulation may be stopped, modified, or potentially steered, thus conserving CPU resources. We present in this thesis a loosely coupled approach that enables a simulation to transfer data to a visualization server via the use of in-memory files. We show in this study how the interface, implemented on top of a widely used hierarchical data format (HDF5), allows us to efficiently decrease the I/O bottleneck by using efficient communication and data mapping strategies. For steering, we present an interface that allows not only simple parameter changes but also complete re-meshing of grids or operations involving regeneration of field values over the entire computational domain to be carried out. This approach, tested and validated on two industrial test cases, is generic enough so that no particular knowledge of the underlying model is required.

The purpose of this thesis is to find out whether the statement that this genre is isomorphic is right or wrong. The thesis is divided into two parts. In the theoretical part we will define the term popular music and its evolution. Then we will focus on functioning of semiotic method in the musical analysis and communication of music. The second part will be dedicated to semiotic analysis itself where we will analyze the structure and lyrics of chosen dance-pop songs and we especially will focus on the most used strings of musemes and intertextual quotation of other popular records. Communication Constructs That Influence Information Technology Project FailureMackey, Vanessa Lajuan Ruth 01 January 2015 (has links)
Ineffective communication behavioral constructs in the workplace that lead to information technology (IT) project failure and in some cases organization failure are increasingly becoming a management concern. Despite this trend, there is little research on the communication behavioral constructs that contribute to IT project failure rates. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of business analysts, programmers, and programmer analysts pertaining to the behavioral constructs associated with effective and ineffective communication. The research questions addressed these behaviors from a conceptual framework based on communication theory, organizational information processing theory, and critical social theory. This framework guided data collection using electronic interviews of a snowball sample of social media participants. Data were coded using open and axial techniques, analyzed for themes and patterns, and member checked to bolster trustworthiness. Findings included 10 communication behavioral constructs that influence communication in IT software development teams. Included in the findings were potential options for improving communication among end users, management, programmers, and other employees. Recommendations to improve communication among stakeholders included involvement of the correct stakeholders, clear project requirements, frequent communication, active listening, and feedback. Other recommendations were stakeholder education and training, and knowledge of goals and processes. Implications for positive social change could be realized by using the findings to improve the way communication is addressed, shared, and implemented to reduce IT project failure for stakeholders.

Literature proposes that a market-oriented point of view is not enough anymore to achieve a competitive advantage; the core solution to an organisation's problems should lie in a management perspective that understands the internal value-generating processes of customers and employees alike. This study strives to assess the role of internal communication in creating a service-oriented approach.
Particular attention is given to the support that communication can provide to an organisation wishing to establish a service-oriented approach. The evolution of the service-oriented approach is discussed along with the internal and external changes that took place in the organisational environment. A service-orientation as a possible answer to environmental changes is discussed.

Once a year for over forty years public relations’ practitioners in Sweden gathers, the political week in Almedalen, in the town of Visby. There they exchange knowledge and experience on all types of subjects using different and common communication models whether they are aware of them or not. The research on communication models is sparse, with one exception: Grunig’s model. Both practitioners and researches believe them to be important, even strategic. But too little knowledge about the models as such negatively impacts the understanding of public relations’ activities. It also contributes to the view that public relations is frittered. The thesis studies and analyses communication models of public relations. Models have been created by theorists and practitioners to describe the phenomenon, to understand communication as such and to facilitate communication between humans. The thesis addresses basic questions such as which models there are, where they stem from, who the originators were and the characteristics of each respective model. The basis of the study is comprehensive Anglo-American literature. All in all, over twenty different models have been analyzed in three different ways, i.e. the structure of a model, its historical deposits (sediment) and the application of the model. The result is manifold, since many characteristics form ten attributes and three families of models (a reduction). The characteristics can be seen as the models’ building blocks, e.g. the direction of the communication, the number of contacts and synchronism. Three model families are built on three differentiating characteristics, and the families are named correspondingly. Directional model (Riktningsmodellen), the Co-orientational model (Saminriktningsmodellen) and the Connectivity model (Konnektivitetsmodellen). The classification is of course not set in stone. It should be regarded as a first step to reduce the number of models in use and concentrate on the important characteristics of the models that help public relations researchers and professionals to solve problems and theorists to explain, foresee or guide to better public relations. Finally, five areas of future research are presented: a multinational study of models, a study of practitioners’ model use, a deeper history study according the concept of sediment, a notational system for models and, last but not least, a development of the Connectivity model.
