The effects of an intensive reading programme on the academic performance of post-matric English Second Language students in Science

Phillips, Susan 31 December 2004 (has links)
Reading is considered to be a vital skill for academic success, yet it is seldom taught to or practised with students. Students begin to `read to learn' during primary and secondary schooling. However, at tertiary level the academic demands are much greater than before and involve more extensive reading of conceptually more complex texts. This study investigates the implementation of an intensive reading programme for post-matric English Second Language Science students, based on the assumption that reading improves reading. In addition, this study investigates the effect that reading ability has on academic performance in Science, which relies inter alia, on the ability to read, comprehend and interpret word problems. An intervention group and a control group were used to ascertain the effects of an intensive reading programme and the findings suggest that any reading (intensive or extensive) improves reading and language skills. This in turn impacts on academic performance in Science, if students have an ability in Science to begin with. / Linguistics and Modern Languages / MA - SP APPLIED LINGUISTICS

Evaluation d’une filière technologique de cellules photovoltaïques multi-jonctions à base de matériaux antimoniures (III-V)-Sb pour applications aux très fortes concentrations solaires / Evaluation of a technological process of photovoltaic cells multi-junction based antimonide materials (III-V)-Sb for use under highly concentrated solar flux

Giudicelli, Emmanuel 20 June 2016 (has links)
The development of PV conversion systems in the past thirty years has led to considerable improvements in terms of cost and performance in the field of renewable energies. / Photovoltaic (PV) solar energy consists on the ability of certain materials to convert the photon energy into electric current. The development of PV conversion systems in the past thirty years has led to considerable improvements in terms of cost and performance in the field of renewable energies.A multi-junction (MJ) cell, based on III-V semiconductor materials, is a stack of sub-cells with decreasing gaps which notably allows wider use of the solar spectrum. Exposing these PV cells to a concentrated solar flux can significantly increase the electrical power generated, and therefore substantially lower the cost of electricity yielded. The world record is currently held by the partnership Soitec / Fraunhofer ISE with an efficiency of 46.0 % measured on a four-junction cell GaInP/GaAs//InGaAsP/InGaAs for a concentration ratio of 508 X (where 1 X = 1 sun = 1 kW/m²).The objective of the work in this thesis is to propose an alternative to existing cells, easier to implement with monolithic MJ cells grown on a GaSb substrate for solar concentrations of 1 000, which corresponds to a direct irradiance of 1 MW/m². This type of cell, due to the good complementary of the material gaps and its favorable band alignments, is a realistic and original alternative to existing cells for use under highly concentrated solar flux.To better understand the optimal multijunction III-Sb cell, the work carried out consisted on the manufacturing and characterization of the three sub-cells independently. These three epitaxial samples are Al0,9Ga0,1As0,07Sb0,93 (Top cell), the Al0,35Ga0,65As0,03Sb0,97 (Middle cell) and GaSb (Bottom cell) having as respective gaps 1.6 eV, 1.22 eV and 0.726 eV at 300 K.The work presented in this thesis is:- The establishment of all the technological steps required to manufacture the cells (metal deposition, wet and dry plasma etching ...).- The characterization of metallization by TLM structure (Transmission Line Method) with the best result being a three-layer metallization Cr/Pd/Au (30/30/30 nm) on a GaSb P-type substrate.- The characterization under dark of current-voltage electrical parameters of PV cells at room temperature and in function of the temperature.- The thermal characterization by measuring the thermal conductivity of the materials and a surface temperature mapping in function of the concentrated solar flux in realistic conditions.- The electro-optical characterization by spectral response, from which we calculated the external quantum efficiency which is the ratio between the amount of electrons created and the amount of incident photons.- The characterization under 1 sun illumination (1 000 W/m²) in a solar simulator and in realistic conditions of which we compared the electrical parameters.- The characterization of solar cells under (highly) concentrated solar flux in the PROMES laboratory. The best efficiencies for Bottom, Middle and Top PV cells respectively are 4.6 % for 40 X (close to the state of the art), 8.2 % for 96 X and 5.4 % for 185 X (world first for these quaternary materials). This work was cofounded by the Ministry of Education and Research (ED Research grant) and Labex SOLSTICE.

Rhéologie des suspensions concentrées de fibres : application à la mise en forme des matériaux composites / Rheology of concentrated fibre suspensions : Application to polymer composite forming

Guiraud, Olivier 23 September 2011 (has links)
This study focuses on the processing of composite materials reinforced with short fibres or fibres bundles such as SMC or BMC. Firstly, an experimental work was carried-out at the macroscopic scale. This work led to the development of a lubricated compression rheometer and associated analysis methods to better characterize the rheology of SMC and BMC compounds, by accounting for the compressibility of compounds and the possible friction between the rheometer wall and the flowing composite. Numerical simulation was then achieved in order to simulate the forming of a BMC. For that purpose, the constitutive parameters of a simple tensorial rheological model were determined from experimental data obtained with the rheometer. Finally, an experimental work at the microscopic level allowed (i) the microstuctures of SMC models from X-ray microtomography micrographs and (ii) fibre pull-out experiment to be characterized, and the interaction mechanisms between the fiber bundles forming the fiber reinforcement of these materials to be modelled.

In recent years, the State of Paraná has increased its production and export of FCOJ. Through the survey of secondary data and interviews with key players, this study identified and evaluated the main critical aspects of the competitiveness of the agri-food chain of FCOJ in Paraná. Through the rapid appraisal method (method of quick research) were possible to evaluate 11 drivers of competitiveness, focusing on the links of agricultural production and processing of that chain. A total of 24 interviews were conducted, using questionnaires and interviews screenplays. It was possible to identify which are the drivers of competitiveness, considered in the context of this research, which are considered favorable, neutral and unfavorable for the competitiveness of the links of agricultural production and processing of the agri-food chain of FCOJ in Paraná. From these analyses it was also possible to verify that none of the drivers of competitiveness, considered in this dissertation, was regarded as very favorable or very unfavorable for the competitiveness of the link of agricultural production of that chain. From these analyses it was also possible to verify that none of the drivers of competitiveness, considered in this dissertation, was regarded as very favorable for the competitiveness of the link of processing of that chain, and only a driver of competitiveness, of the set of drivers considered in this dissertation, was regarded as very unfavorable for the competitiveness of the link of processing. The analyses allowed to point out proposals for public policies and private strategies to enhance the competitiveness. In a general context, it was possible to conclude that the links of agricultural production and processing of the agri-food chain of FCOJ in Paraná have a great potential to continue to expand in Paraná. The citriculture in Paraná has a great potential to expand because it has a good technology, a good production capacity and productivity and a sufficient amount of available agricultural land to extend the exploration of the citriculture in Paraná, in addition, the economic agents that act in the citriculture in Paraná have contracts for the supply of orange to the economic organizations that have manufacturing plants that produce FCOJ in Paraná, so these contracts ensure the sale of the most part of the Paraná s orange production, which is good for the citrus growers who act in Paraná. The processor sector of orange also has a great potential to expand in Paraná because it has agro-industrial technologies of good level and a good production capacity, in addition to be able to expand without great difficulties its manufacturing capacity of FCOJ, moreover, the existence of contracts for orange supply between economic organizations who act in processing and citrus growers in Paraná, secures the supply of oranges, considered of good quality, for the producing plants of FCOJ installed in Paraná.

Notably in recent years, the generation of electricity using energy from renewable resources has presented continuous increase, which is due to, especially, the concerns about climate changes, the dependency in fossil fuel and the necessity of production of electric energy with resources to decrease the negative impacts in the environmental. The global renewable power generation capacity, which presented 800GW on the beginning of 2004, reaching an estimated 1,712GW at year’s end 2014, and the renewable electricity global production in 2014 presented 22.8%. Brazil has a mainly renewable energy matrix. In 2014, 74.6% of the electricity produced came from renewable sources of energy. The remaining percentage comes from fossil fuels and nuclear sources (25.4%). Although it shows a remarkably renewable character, it is notable that the main source of generation of electricity is the water source, which is susceptible the climate changes, and should present the reduction in your capacity installed in a long term. As a way of contributing to diversify the energy matrix Brazilian, this work presents two different methodologies macro spatial for the selection of the best sites for insertion of solar thermal power plants: the methodologies based on analytic hierarchy process (AHP) where the selection the best site was based on means of the hierarchical organization of criteria according to axioms of the AHP method; and the method based on cost of electricity generation where the best site were selected according to Levelised Cost of Electricity (LCOE). Both studies were made in Pernambuco, located in Northeastern Region of Brazil and considered the implementation of a parabolic trough solar power plant, of 80MWe, operating exclusively in solar mode, without thermal stores. The analyzes performed confirmed that the Pernambuco presents great potential for the installation of solar thermal power plants, especially, in the Sertão Pernambucano where the best sites were located. In the methodologies AHP, for example, this region presented great potential for the installation in all scenarios analyzed, including the Ponto de Partida scenarios where weights are not used. In the method based on cost of electricity, the Sertão presented great potential also. In this region it is possible to find electric energy generation costs by MWh of the order of R$ 337.16. This costs are still high when comparing the cost of generation of the hydraulic source (R$ 182.09/MWh) in Brazil, although, they comply as to expected for its insertion in the Brazilian Market. The methodologies used demonstrated very consistent and identified a promising potential for solar thermal power generation in Pernambuco. This potential should be analyzed in details and include the local measurement of the incident direct normal solar irradiation for at least five years.

A Design Concept of a Volumetric Solar Receiver for Supercritical CO2 Brayton Cycle

Khivsara, Sagar D January 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Recently, the supercritical carbon dioxide (s-CO2) Brayton cycle has been identified as a promising candidate for solar-thermal energy conversion due to its potentially high thermal efficiency (50%, for turbine inlet temperatures of ~ 1000 K). Realization of such a system requires development of solar receivers which can raise the temperature of s-CO2 by over 200 K, to a receiver outlet temperature of 1000 K. Volumetric receivers are an attractive alternative to tubular receivers due to their geometry, functionality and reduced thermal losses. A concept of a ceramic pressurized volumetric receiver for s-CO2 has been developed in this work. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis along with a Discrete Ordinate method (DOM) radiation heat transfer model has been carried out, and the results for temperature distribution in the receiver and the resulting thermal efficiency are presented. Issues regarding material selection for the absorber structure, window, coating, receiver body and insulation are also addressed. A modular small scale prototype with 0.5 kWth solar heat input has been designed. The design of a small scale s-CO2 loop for testing this receiver module is also presented in this work. There is a lot of ongoing investigation for design and simulation of different configurations of heat exchangers and solar receivers using s-CO2 as the working fluid, in which wall temperatures up to 1000 K are encountered. While CO2 is considered to be transparent as far as solar radiation spectrum is concerned, there may be considerable absorption of radiation in the longer wavelength range associated with radiation emission from the heated cavity walls and tubes inside the receivers. An attempt has been made, in this study, to include radiation modelling to capture the effect of absorption bands of s-CO2 and the radiative heat transfer among the equipment surfaces. As a case study, a numerical study has been performed to evaluate the contribution of radiative heat transfer as compared to convection and conduction, for s-CO2 flow through a circular pipe. The intent is to provide a guideline for future research to determine the conditions for which radiation heat transfer modelling inside the pipe can be significant, and what errors can be expected otherwise. The effect of parameters such as Reynolds number, pipe diameter, length to diameter ratio, wall emissivity and total wall heat flux has been studied. The effect of radiation modelling on wall temperatures attained for certain amount of heat flux to be transferred to s-CO2 is also studied. The resulting temperature distribution, in turn, affects the estimation of heat loss to the environment

Investigation of Hydrogenated and Fluorinated Surfactant Based-Systems for the Design of Porous Silica Materials / Systèmes à base de tensioactifs hydrogénés et fluorés pour la préparation de matériaux poreux silicatés

Du, Na 23 July 2010 (has links)
This work deals with the study of the properties of nonionic hydrogenated and fluorinated surfactant based systems which are related to the synthesis of porous silica. The effect of the solubilization of low fraction of hexadecane or decane in the micelles of C12H25CO(OC2H4)9OCH3 leads to the formation of large mesoporous silica, whereas no swelling effect was noted with cyclohexane. When the materials are templated by fluorinated micelles of C8F17C2H4(OC2H4)9OH, large pore mesoporous materials are obtained with perfluorooctyl bromide (PFOBr). Both PFOBr and perfluorodecalin give rise to macropores at high oil concentrations. With C7F15C2H4(OC2H4)8OH, the fluorocarbon (C4F9CH)2 is not only an effective expander to enlarge the pore size of mesoporous materials, but also very favourable for the design of macropore network. On the contrary, with PFOBr, there is neither mesopore nor macropore. Therefore, both hydrogenated and fluorinated systems obey to the same rule: the formation of macroporous materials template by emulsions is favoured with systems which exhibit a high value of the PIT. Lastly, alcohols used as additives in the C8F17C2H4(OC2H4)9OH -water system to tune the characteristics of the recovered materials. The structural parameters of the hexagonal liquid crystal show the short and medium alcohols behaved like solvent, while the long chain and fluorinated octanol acted as co-surfactant. The short alcohols provoke a micelle breaking effect. Thus, the self-assembly mechanism is disturbed and wormhole-like structures are recovered

Erfassung und Auswertung von Ultraschallechosignalen zur Charakterisierung konzentrierter disperser Stoffsysteme / Acquisition and evaluation of ultrasonic reflection signals for characterising concentrated disperse material systems

Weser, Robert 20 January 2015 (has links) (PDF)

Etude du comportement thermique et thermomécanique des récepteurs solaires sous haut flux radiatif / Study of the thermomechanical behavior of a ceramic solar absorber submitted to high solar flux

For the future, using thermodynamical solar power plant seems to be a good solution to ensure electrical production. Solar tower plants are able to produce electricity in significant amount, are environmentally friendly and economically competitive. One way to increase the yield of these plants is using high efficiency thermodynamical cycles, like combined cycle. That requires to providing a working fluid at high temperature and high pressure (10bar and 1000°C at least). This PHD thesis presents the works performed to develop and enhance a concept of modular plate solar ceramic absorber that can ensure the required air production. We chose the silicon carbide as material due to its resistance to high temperatures and oxidation problems. The drawback is ceramic modules are weak to traction stresses. The study focuses on the knowledge and the control of this phenomenon. This work combines the developments of numerical tools and experimental studies performed at Thémis power plant (Targassonne, 66, FRANCE). The numerical method permits simulations to predict the thermal behavior and the mechanical behavior of a solar module absorber. It allows the reduction of the mechanical stresses undergone by solar receiver and the prediction of its performances. This methodology was tested using experimental results.

This thesis deals with the study of the influence of formulation on the rheological behavior of highly concentrated reverse emulsions. We used an original approach consisting in representing the elastic modulus (G’) of these emulsions on a formulation-composition bidimensional map to study, in particular, the effect of the so-called optimum formulation. Two major effects are observed in relation to this one: emulsions prepared at HLB=10, i.e. at the proximity of optimum value (HLB=10.5) present values of G’ remarkably lower than those at other formulations, while at a certain distance (HLB=7.7) the values of G’ are higher in comparison to others formulations. This last particular HLB matches with the occurrence of a maximum stability and a minimum drop size of dispersion. Highly concentrated emulsions being generally opaque and fragile, the analysis of incoherent polarized steady light transport, that does not imply any dilution, has been used as an alternative method to classical techniques to determine the average film thickness (h). The average drop size (R) has then to be determined from a geometrical model linking it to the average film thickness (h), to the dispersed phase volume fraction (f) and to a geometrical factor (f9) that takes into account the polyhedral shape of the drops. Hence, a modified expression of the model proposed by Mougel et al. (2006) has been established to model the elastic modulus (G’) by relating it to the average drop size (R), the interfacial tension (s) and the dispersed phase volume fraction (f)
