An awakening and a nightmare : the diverse meanings of the Chicago conspiracy trial

Draper, Timothy Dean January 1986 (has links)
This is a study of the Chicago Conspiracy trial of 1969-1970, where eight radical leaders were tried in connection to the riots during the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the meanings of the trial to American society in 1970 and from today's historical vantage point. Differing from first-hand accounts of the trial in the early 1970s, this study examines the different public perspectives of the trial through the use of such primary sources as underground newspapers, the defendants' writings, and appeals documents. Particular attention is devoted to the interpersonal relationships between the leading participants of the trial (the judge, attorneys, defendants, jurors, journalists, and spectators). The thesis is organized to highlight the major issues and controversies of the trial, while still addressing the personalities involved in the case. The context of the trial in an era of active American radicalism is examined both before and after the case was tried. An entire chapter is devoted to examining the diverse participants in the trial and the different roles they played in the event. Since the trial was so controversial because of legal issues and the conduct of the courtroom participants, a chapter has been devoted to both of these areas. Paticular attention is paid to events precipitating the prosecution of the eight radicals, including the Chicago Convention disorders and the federal grand jury that handed down the indictments. This organization lays a foundation for exploring the contemporary and historical significances of the trial in the conclusion of the study.

Os inconfidentes nas Minas Gerais: uma relação entre a Geografia e a Literatura Setecentista de Cláudio Manuel da Costa, Tomás Antônio Gonzaga e Alvarenga Peixoto

Araújo, Kárita de Fátima 09 May 2014 (has links)
Order to understand the way in which it sued the construction of national identity and the Brazilian territorial formation in the context of the eighteenth-century Minas Gerais, we ve tried doing it in the light of the literary works of poets conspiracy. So, we chose Villa Rica from Claudio Manuel da Costa; Cartas chilenas from Tomas Antonio Gonzaga and Canto Genetlíaco from Inácio José de Alvarenga Peixoto. Working in the intersection between geography and literature, we seek to combine the artistic expressions of the agents who actually participated in the Minas Conspiracy to storms that formed the society of the eighteenth century mining and spatial components. In this sense, the poetry of the conspiracy was essential to analyze the condition of the mining captaincy just as it was presented. Some elements have been invaluable in assisting us in this analysis, such as understanding the concept of sertão for that locale and period as well as their occupation and isolation condition, the development and decay of the gold cycle and the relationships established between Minas Gerais and the captaincies of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in order to subsequently compose together a single independent nation of Portugal . Understand also the colonial relations between Brazil and Portugal was vital to assess the reasons that the mining elite to unite around a movement that, fortified by dissatisfaction with the Portuguese managed under the colony, had the intention of transforming the Minas Gerais and perhaps São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, in an independent territory. In addition to the political and economic issues that motivated the movement die conspirator, there were still those of an ideological character, which were essential to characterize the motions involved. This time, we turn our gaze to the acquired inspiration from Enlightenment ideological current that valued clarity and rationality and that was widely studied and used by poets conspiracy. Coupled with the Enlightenment was also the Arcadian literary current that enabled the conspirators poets express their ideas. Therefore, we tried to consider all those aspects involving expressive subjects ( GOLDMANN, 1979 ) around the same ideal in order to reveal not only the worldview ( GOLDMANN, 1979) reflected in literary works, but also the reality of Minas Gerais of the eighteenth-century, expressed in literary texts.

Trust no truth : an analysis of the visual translation styles in the conspiracy film

Stemmet, Carl 18 January 2012 (has links)
This study investigates the manner in which cinematic visual translation styles can be used to incorporate dominant and subversive historical versions in fictional narratives constructed within the conspiracy film genre. Fictional characters in a conspiracy film are often tasked with a mission to discover the alternative historical accounts, accounts which for all intents and purposes are regularly kept hidden from the public eye. These accounts are presented as a plausible and often unconventional narrative which challenges the dominant version of events. A visual translation style is a term used to describe the various methods in which a film can be shot and edited in order to create a specific aesthetic and communicate a specific idea. These styles can consist of camera movements, shot sizes or editing techniques, all of which aid in communicating a specific idea in a film. This study analyses the conventions of the conspiracy film, with regard to the manner in which the alternative and dominant versions of historical accounts are constructed. Furthermore, the study explores how these alternative and hegemonic historical events are presented and communicated through the use of visual translation styles. Theorists such as Jean Baudrillard and David Bordwell are referenced when discussing the meaning and application of terms such as “truth”, “narrative” and “history” and to problematise these notions in the context of this particular genre. Other key notions investigated include aporia, metalanguage and object-language and notions of genre theory. The conceptual and theoretical framework regarding visual translation styles is further complemented by writers such as Don Fairservice and Ken Dancyger. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Drama / unrestricted

Le conspirationnisme dans la culture politique et populaire aux Etats-Unis : une approche sociopolitique des théories du complot / Conspiracism in American politics and popular culture : a sociopolitical approach of conspiracy theories

Giry, Julien 06 October 2014 (has links)
From 9/11 to UFOs, from American concentration camps to the Kennedy's assassination, this dissertation aims to enlighten, through a sociopolitical analysis, the grounds, the mechanics and the goals of the conspiratorial thought in the United States since the Revolution. Even Though it is no question to draw an exhaustive catalog of each and every conspiracy theory, I would stress that conspiracism is part of the American political and popular culture. Then, this dissertation studies the origins and the developments of conspiracism through three complementary focuses. First, a factual approach which dwells on specific conspiracy theories such as the 9/11 attacks or the assassination of Kennedy. Secondly, I will come on the actors of conspiracism : the conspiracist leaders (LaRouche, Icke) the citizens sleuths and the scapegoats (Communists, Jews, Illuminatis). Finally, under a cultural angle, I will outlook conspiracism and the American culture of anti-statism, the presence of mafias or the role of mass-medias.

Le roman paranoïaque russe : Fedor Sologub, Andrej Belyj, Vladimir Nabokov / Russian paranoid novel : Fedor Sologub, Andrej Belyj, Vladimir Nabokov

Skonechnaya, Olga 05 December 2011 (has links)
The aim of this study is to extract and describe a literary form which we define as a “paranoid novel”. We attribute this form to Heavy dreams and Petty daemon by Fyodor Sologub and Silver dove, Diary of a crank, Petersburg and Moscow by Andrey Belyï. A paranoid novel reproduces a process of a deficient learning of a hero. The author converts this process into a delirious reality i.e. a reality of novel. Our study is focused on the symbolistic strategy which confers a specifcic meaning to a relevant clinical model. This metaphysical, mystical, mythological, aesthetical meaning transforms the model yielding poetics. We study Nabokov’s texts as well in order to provide an insight into their parodying and post-symbolistic developing of the tradition.

Pandemic Politics As A Holocaust 2.0? : The Perception Of The Holocaust In Telegram-Communications Of German Covid-Protesters

Golombek, Moritz January 2022 (has links)
Embedding itself in the larger discussion on protests against measures taken by governments all over the world to mitigate the effects of the covid-19 pandemic, this work concerns itself with the role of the Holocaust in narratives found in prominent Telegram channels and chat groups of German covid-protests. Building on the existing body of research, it uses the theoretical framework of New Social Movement (NSM) theory to categorise the protests in Germany. Choosing a mixed-methods design, the phenomenon is described using narrative analysis, computer-assisted coding, and elements of network analysis. The narrative analysis and results of computer-assisted coding, find that the Holocaust is narrated as a valid comparison to pandemic politics, while some Telegram channels engage in historical revisionism. The network analysis reveals a large network of Telegram channels, strengthening the importance of the analysed channels for the protests in Germany

Konspirační teorie v období první republiky (1918-1938) / Conspiracy Theories during the First Czechoslovak Republik (1918 - 1938)

Tesárek, Vojtěch January 2021 (has links)
The thesis entitled Conspiracy Theories during the First Czechoslovak Republic (1918- 1938) deals with conspiracy theories, both in general and also specifically about those that were spread in the period from 1918 to 1938, known as the First Czechoslovak Republic. The author first characterizes conspiracy theories, divides them, introduces the readers to their main characteristics and describes why this theories are trusted by a large number of people. In the second part of this thesis the author deals specifically with periodicals from the First Czechoslovak Republic. These newspaper (Lidové noviny, Národní listy a České slovo) are examined by historical-comparative analysis and it is shown how on three specific cases (the mysterious death of Milan Rastislav Štefánik, the Gajda's affair and the alleged infection of Jiří Stříbrný with syphilis) conspiracy theories were spread during the First Czechoslovak Republic, what was the outcome, what was the motivation of those who spread them and how the state either opposed those theories or used them. In addition, for better understanding, this whole part is set in the historical context of the events. In the final part, the author examines whether the mentioned affairs and cases hold the characters of conspiracy theories or not.
