Chevallier, Denis 30 September 2011 (has links)
The conductance is the most natural quantity to characterize a quantum conductor. It is given by the Landauer Formula. However, noise contains more information. It measures the current fluctuations around its average value. Moreover, the sign of the crossed correlations is related to the statistics of carriers. This thesis broaches two main topics which are the transport in the quantum Hall effect and in hybrid circuits.First, we start by introducing the Luttinger liquid and the systems which are modelized by them. Also, we discuss the Keldysh formalism in order to treat nonequilibrium problems. Then, we study the effect of the width of a quantum point contact on the backscattering current between two edge states of the quantum Hall effect. By increasing the width of the quantum point contact, we show that the backscattering current is strongly reduced. In another chapter, we develop a technique to use a RLC circuit inductively coupled to a mesoscopic circuit in order to measure the current correlations in the photo-assisted regime. The measurement of these correlations is performed through the charge on the capacitor plates.Secondly, we present the non-local transport in hybrid structures. The mechanism of Crossed Andreev Reflection is explained. Finally, we study a double quantum dot connected to two normal leads and a superconducting lead. We introduce the separation of the Cooper pair by measuring together the branching currents and the crossed correlations. We demonstrate that in the anti-symmetric regime (the energy level of the two quantum dots have opposite values with respect to the chemical potential of the superconducting lead), crossed Andreev reflection is optimized.

Comportamento eletroquímico das interfases cobre-H2SO4 na ausência e presença de triazóis, surfactantes e misturas composto triazólico-surfactante / The electrochemical behavior of Cooper-H2SO4 interphases in the absence and in the presence of triazolic compounds, surfactants and triazole compounds-surfactants mixtures

Silva, Douglas Kais da 18 August 2006 (has links)
The electrochemical behavior of 0.5 mol.L-1 Cu/H2SO4 interphases has been studied in the presence and in the absence of triazolic compounds-benzotriazole (BTAH) and tolitriazole (TTAH) and of surfactants - sodium dodecylsulphate (anionic, SDS) and dodecylammonium chloride (cationic, DAC) at 25ºC, using non-stirred electrode and rotating disc electrode (RDE). Open circuit potential, potentiostatic and potenctiodinamic polarization, chronoamperometry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and optical microscopy were used as techniques. The inhibitive features of the formed film depend on both the nature of the additives and on the hydrodynamic conditions. The interphases containing BTAH, TTAH, BTAH + TTAH, BTAH + SDS e TTAH + SDS presented a wide potential range where the copper is passivated, reaching to 200 mV for BTAH + SDS mixture using RDE. Low passivating current densities (2µA cm-2) were observed with RDE in the presence of BTAH + TTAH. Triazolic compound?surfactant mixtures have originated less resistant films. Isolated surfactants do not originate passive ranges and anticipate the oxidation potential of copper under non stationary conditions. The mixtures triazole-DAC only produce passive range at stationary conditions. All the additives have shown to be inhibitors for the H+/H2 reaction, specially BTAH, TTAH e BTAH + TTAH using non stirred conditions.

Microwaves as a probe of quantum dot circuits : from Kondo dynamics to mesoscopic quantum electrodynamics / Les micro-ondes comme sonde des circuits de boîtes quantiques : de la dynamique Kondo à l’électrodynamique quantique mésoscopique

Bruhat, Laure 01 April 2016 (has links)
This thesis uses microwaves as probe of carbon nanotube quantum dot circuits. In a first experiment, a microwave excitation is directly applied to a circuit electrode for a quantum dot in the Kondo regime. We provide the first frequency-amplitude characterisation of the Kondo zero-bias conductance. Preliminary data are consistent with predicted universal behaviour. We present two other experiments, where quantum dot circuits are embedded in microwave resonators. Cavity photons probe charge relaxation resistance and photon-emission in a quantum dot coupled to normal and superconducting reservoirs in presence of Coulomb repulsion. Our observations validate a modelling in terms of the circuit linear response. We also present the first implementation of a Cooper pair splitter in cavity. The strong coupling regime is achieved, a premiere with quantum dot circuits. Our findings support the idea, that mesoscopic quantum electrodynamics is a fruitful toolbox in the context of both fields of quantum transport and quantum information science.

Cohérence, brouillage et dynamique de phase dans un condensat de paires de fermions / Coherence, blurring and phase dynamics in a pair-condensed Fermi gas

Kurkjian, Hadrien 19 May 2016 (has links)
It is generally assumed that a condensate of paired fermions at equilibrium is characterized by a macroscopic wavefunction with a well-defined, immutable phase. In reality, all systems have a finite size and are prepared at non-zero temperature ; the condensate has then a finite coherence time, even when the system is isolated. This fundamental effect, crucial for applicationsusing macroscopic coherence, was scarcely studied. Here, we link the coherence time to the condensate phase dynamics, and show using a microscopic theory that the time derivative of the condensate phase operator ˆθ0 is proportional to a chemical potential operator which includes both the fermionic pair-breaking and the bosonic pair-motion excitation branches. For a given realization of the number of particle N and of the energy E, the phase evolves at long times as −2μmc(E,N)t/~ where μmc(E,N) is the microcanonical chemical potential ; fluctuations of N and E from one realization to the other then lead to a ballistic spreading of the phase and to a Gaussian decay of the temporal coherence function with a characteristictime ∝ N1/2. On the contrary, in the absence of energy and number fluctuations, the decay of the temporal coherence function is exponential with a characteristic time scaling as N due to the diffusive motion of ˆθ0 in the environnement created by the excited modes. We give an explict expression of this characteristic time at low temperature in the case where the bosonicbranch is convex and the phonons undergo 2 ↔ 1 Beliaev-Landau process. Finally, we propose methods to measure each contribution to the coherence time using ultracold atoms.

Shaping the spectrum of carbon nanotube quantum dots with superconductivity and ferromagnetism for mesoscopic quantum electrodynamics / Façonnage du spectre de boîtes quantiques à base de nanotubes de carbones avec la supraconductivité et le ferromagnétisme pour l'électrodynamique quantique mésoscopique

Cubaynes, Tino 07 December 2018 (has links)
In this thesis, we study carbon nanotubes based quantum dot circuits embedded in a microwave cavity. This general architecture allows one to simultaneously probe the circuit via quantum transport measurements and using circuit quantum electrodynamics techniques. The two experiments realized in this thesis use metallic contacts of the circuit as a resource to engineer a spin sensitive spectrum in the quantum dots. The first one is a Cooper pair splitter which was originally proposed as a source of non local entangled electrons. By using cavity photons as a probe of the circuit internal dynamics, we observed a charge transition dressed by coherent Cooper pair splitting. Strong charge-photon coupling in a quantum dot circuit was demonstrated for the first time in such a circuit. A new fabrication technique has also been developed to integrate pristine carbon nanotubes inside quantum dot circuits. The purity and tunability of this new generation of devices has made possible the realization of the second experiment. In the latter, we uses two non-collinear spin-valves to create a coherent interface between an electronic spin in a double quantum dot and a photon in a cavity. Highly coherent spin transitions have been observed. We provide a model for the decoherence based on charge noise and nuclear spin fluctuations.

The Importance of Prior Geologic Information on Hydraulic Tomography Analysis at the North Campus Research Site (NCRS)

Tang, Han, Tang, Han January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the importance of prior information about hydraulic conductivity (K) by Kriging, using point K data and/or residual covariance, on improvements of K estimates at the North Campus Research Site (NCRS). Among many methods that can characterize the mean or detail distribution of hydraulic conductivity (K), the Cooper-Jacob straight line solution, Kriging using point K data, single-well pumping tests inversion and Hydraulic Tomography (HT) have been compared in this study, using the head data collected from 15 cross-hole pumping tests collected at NCRS, where 9 existing wells were installed with packer system and the pressure responses at different intervals in different wells were monitored with transducers. It is found that the HT method, which fuse all the available pumping test data, yields more accurate and consistent results. However, many studies have indicated that the hydraulic data combined with geologic investigation will improve the HT estimates. Thus, in this study, hard data of K obtained by permeameter (227 data points) are brought in using Kriging and combined with HT to yield better estimate K field. Moreover, the validations of unused tests indicate that the estimated K obtained using collected K information makes more accurate predictions.

Metals are components of the biosphere, occurring naturally in soil and plants, but as a result of human actions, their levels have been greatly increased, depending on the region.
