The coastal regions in Greece have long been a topic of discussion, since vast regions of coast has changed drastically from the Neolithic period until our modern-day perception of them. Coastal reconstructions with data from drilling cores help geoarchaeologists get a better understanding of how the prehistoric settlements related the coast, and how the landscape and seascape around them looked. This thesis aims to better understand the coastal reconstructions of Asine, Peloponnese made by Eberhard Zangger and how archaeological finds can be used as a complementary material in creating these reconstructive maps. The insides of the drilling cores, their placement and the quantity of them are important factors for a geoarchaeological study, and this paper aims to better understand the quality of the coastal reconstructions of Asine. With new archaeological finds of Neolithic ceramics in the Asine area, together with early Helladic finds, this paper explores the possible uncertainty of the modern reconstructions. This paper reaches its natural conclusion in the Hellenistic Asine, where the theory of a harbor in the area is discussed from different possibilities of coastal reconstructions, and how Zanggers reconstruction relates to the Hellenistic architectural remains. The discussion also brings other comparative studies in light and differences between Zanggers coastal reconstructions and other reconstructions of similar nature are confronted.

[pt] Nas operações de testemunhagem o acunhamento é uma preocupação permanente. Denomina-se acunhamento quando a amostra de rocha não prossegue adentrando no barrilete de testemunhagem devido à fricção entre a rocha e superfície interna do barrilete. Em formações resistentes é indesejável por causar perda de tempo e prejuízo econômico, principalmente caso ocorra logo no início da corrida. Em formações inconsolidadas o prejuízo vai além, pois pode causar a perda da rocha a ser testemunhada, uma vez que a baixa resistência compressiva causa o colapso da rocha. Sendo em muitos casos não detectado na superfície, a operação não é interrompida e o trecho seguinte da rocha-reservatório passa a ser destruído. Uma previsão do comprimento a ser testemunhado até que esse evento ocorra pode ser uma maneira importante de minimizar a destruição de rocha, maximizando sua recuperação, sem o ônus de ser conservador demais. Este trabalho descreve os passos e resultados de se estabelecer um modelo para prever o acunhamento em formações inconsolidadas. Esses passos incluem: experimentos para determinar o coeficiente de fricção entre a areia e os tubos de alumínio, modelagem analítica e análise por elementos finitos para a avaliação dos resultados dos experimentos e para estabelecer o modelo de previsão. / [en] In coring operations core jamming is a permanent concern. It takes place when the core sample becomes stuck within the inner core barrel, preventing further acquisition. In hard formations it is undesirable because it stops bit penetration, and results in loss of time and money, especially if it occurs at the beginning of the core run. In unconsolidated formations the damage goes further, as the jam may become solidary to the coring bit and wash the formation away instead of acquiring it. This phenomenon is unnoticeable at surface and thus gives the operators no indicative of a premature pull out of hole need. The reservoir rock characterization will be permanently incomplete due to the unrecovered washed away material. Hence, a good prediction of a safe maximum coring length could be an important way to avoid washing the sample, maximizing recovery, without risking to be too conservative. This work describes the steps and results of establishing a model to predict jamming in unconsolidated formations. These steps includes: experiments to determine friction factor between sand and the aluminum tubes, analytical modeling, and FEM analysis to evaluate the experiment results and to establish the prediction model.

Cet apport excessif provoque le colmatage du lit des rivières et peut perturber les échanges hydriques, les processus biogéochimiques et les communautés d’invertébrés benthiques et hyporhéiques. D’un point de vue méthodologique, la mesure de la conductivité hydraulique dans le substrat permet d’obtenir une image du niveau de colmatage de la zone hyporhéique et le pompage Bou Rouch permet d’étudier qualitativement la faune hyporhéique. D’un point de vue biologique, les effets du colmatage sont un peu plus importants pour l’hyporhéos que pour le benthos notamment au niveau de la richesse taxonomique, des assemblages faunistiques et des traits biologiques / Fine sediment input to the streambeds is a natural phenomenon but in addition to the effects of human impacts may become excessive and lead to disruption of the functioning of the hydrosystem. La rade de Brest constitue un cadre idéal pour étudier et restituer les transferts sédimentaires terre-mer dans un contexte de bassin côtier semi-fermé macrotidal. Dans cette perspective, deux axes majeurs, d’échelle temporelle différente, ont été développés avec pour objectifs (a) de caractériser le modèle sédimentaire et sa dynamique par charriage à l’actuelle, (b) de déterminer la mise en place des dépôts sédimentaires au cours de la dernière transgression marine.(a) L’analyse combinant une approche sédimentaire et analogique a permis de montrer le contrôle majeur des courants de marée sur la dynamique sédimentaire actuelle. La morphologie du littoral et des fonds marins renforcent l’intensité des courants tidaux qui facilite les échanges en sables coquilliers entre la rade interne et la mer d’Iroise. Le système est néanmoins en érosion et enregistre un déséquilibre en apports sédimentaires. Les sédiments fins sont remobilisés par les courants de flot et les actions anthropiques colmatant les secteurs peu profonds.(b) L’étude litho- et chronostratigraphique de la séquence sédimentaire, a mis en évidence le recul successif des processus estuariens lors de la dernière remontée du niveau marin (holocène). La morphologie héritée du substratum, combinée à la transgression marine, a fortement influencé l’architecture des dépôts, leur préservation et leurs variations lithologiques latérales et longitudinales. Après la stabilisation du niveau marin (3 000 BP), les variations climatiques (optimum climatique médiéval, et petit âge glaciaire) et les activités anthropiques impactent d’avantage la dynamique des particules en suspension.La rade a donc eu un impact différent sur le transfert des sédiments au cours de la remontée du niveau marin. Actuellement, elle acte comme un « piège à sédiment fin » et enregistre dans le même temps un déficit de stock sédimentaire grossier potentiellement remobilisable. Cette configuration favorise une érosion des parties les plus profondes du système. / The bay of Brest is a tide-dominated, semi-enclosed coastal basin, which is connected with two rivers (Aulne and Elorn). Its jagged shoreline and seabed morphology constitute an ideal setting to understand sedimentary transfer at the land-sea interface. In this aim, this study is divided in two different time scale. The first (a) focuses on the present-day sedimentary bedload dynamic and the second (b) on the reconstruction of the Holocene infilling, during the last marine transgression. (a) A analyse combining a sedimentology approach and numerical has highlighted the major control of the tidal currents. Swells and rivers have a minor impact, because the inherited morphology accentuates and promotes tidal currents. There are responsible of a shelly sandy exchange between the oceanic domain (Iroise Sea) and confined (bay of Brest). At present, the bay of Brest suffers from an imbalance of shelly sand. Fine sediments are eroded and redistributed in the shallow parts of the bay. In ideal conditions (strong tidal current) they can be exported.(b) From the stratigraphic and chronostratigraphic analyses, the successive landward retreat of estuarine processes, during the last marine transgression, has been observed. The sea level acts as the major factor control of the sedimentary geometry deposits. However, the morphological particularity of the bay of Brest influenced their preservation and it is possible to determinate the longitudinal and transversal asymmetry. After the sea level stabilisation (3 000 BP), the Holocene climatic variations and anthropic activities have disturbed the suspension dynamic.The bay of Brest had a different impact on the sedimentary transfer during the last marine transgression. At present, it acts as a « sediment trap » for the fine particles and has not enough sandy sediment. This configuration tends to an erosion of the system.

Investigations at Kinlock (22SU526), a Freshwater Mussel Shell Ring in the Delta Region of MississippiCarlock, James Bradley 11 December 2015 (has links)
Kinlock is a freshwater mussel shell ring site located in Sunflower County in the Mississippi Delta. Little work has been done at freshwater mussel shell rings, and therefore little is known about them. This thesis uses four different data collection methods to answer questions of chronology, site layout, etc. These four methods are controlled surface collection, excavation, coring, and magnetometry. Based on the results of these methods, Kinlock was found to be a Woodland period mussel shell ring with a later Mississippian period component built on top of the shell. This later component consisted of five mounds situated around a plaza. It was also found that the plaza was planned and maintained from the Woodland period through the Mississippian period, until the site was abandoned.

Implementation of high-resolution direct push sensing in geoarchaeological exploration of wetland sitesRabiger-Völlmer, Johannes 07 February 2024 (has links)
Wetland sites provide important knowledge about settlement history and historical infrastructure in the form of buried archaeological features. However, the subsurface is difficult to access, e.g. due to high groundwater levels or unstable sediments, making archaeological excavation difficult and the conservation of recovered artefacts, e.g. timbers, is expensive. In addition, one of the aims of heritage conservation is to disturb structures in such contexts as little as possible as part of preserving. Therefore, alternative non- and minimal-invasive methods, e.g. geophysical prospection and vibra-coring, are used for exploration. However, geophysical surveys face the issue of inaccurate depth values and rely on sufficient contrasts in the measured physical parameters. Vibra-coring allows direct access to the sediments, but again gives inaccurate depth values due to high compaction rates.
For this reason, the implementation of alternative methods and the development of new methodical approaches to wetland site exploration are of extraordinary importance.
One such wetland site is the Fossa Carolina, an early medieval canal that today is partially buried. Located in Southern Germany next to Treuchtlingen, south of Nuremberg, the canal was intended at the time to provide a navigable link between the Rhine-Main and Danube basins by bridging the European watershed.
In the research for this thesis, direct push sensing was used as an alternative exploration technique to explore the site. In this method, various probes are pushed into the unconsolidated subsoil and the parameters are measured in situ with high depth accuracy. (i) Therefore, the colour logging tool (CLT) and the electrical conductivity (EC) probe were applied. (ii) In order to record archaeological structures and features, the soundings were distributed closely along a transect using an adaptive exploration strategy, thus recording a high-resolution cross-section of the structure. (iii) These prospections were integrated into a spatial-hierarchical multi-method approach by combining direct push sensing with geophysical survey and vibra-coring, inter alia.
(iv) Thus, a deeply buried section of the Fossa Carolina (West-East Section) was explored, demonstrating at least one-way navigability and revealing the backfill stratigraphy. (v) Furthermore, the approach used helped to clarify the nature of conspicuous magnetic anomalies in the area adjacent to the canal. In the Northern and North-Eastern Sections, magnetic anomalies provided evidence of water-supplying structures. The exploration of these structures revealed an Early Holocene structure in the North-Eastern Section and a historic gravel road in the Northern Section. (vi) Additionally, a strong magnetic anomaly with a course parallel to the canal in the Northern Section could be temporally and stratigraphically associated with the construction of the canal. Thus, for the first time, a larger remnant of the construction process outside the canal could be identified, even if the origin could not be conclusively clarified.
(vii) In a broader context, the in situ direct push cross-sections were integrated into a 3D modelling approach for the entire Fossa Carolina to quantify the excavation volume. (viii) The methodological approach was successfully applied to a wetland site at Pestenacker in Southern Germany to collect evidence for Holocene floodplain dynamics in the Late Neolithic settlement.
Finally, the thesis demonstrates the enormous methodological potential of direct push sensing for the exploration of buried archaeological sites. In particular, the colour logging tool is proving to be extremely effective, further enhanced by the intelligent combination in multi-method approaches. This is confirmed by the significant results obtained at Fossa Carolina that shed new light on the canal{'}s navigability, water supply, and construction structure.
Overall, this thesis demonstrates the valuable contribution that direct push methods can make to geoarchaeological research. It both introduces a new methodological approach and provides new empirical evidence concerning the construction of an example of early medieval infrastructure.:Preface

Schwierige Untergrundverhältnisse, z. B. durch hohen Grundwasserspiegel oder instabile Sedimente, erschweren jedoch archäologische Ausgrabungen und die Konservierung der geborgenen Artefakte, z. B. Hölzer, verursacht hohe Kosten. Darüber hinaus ist ein Ziel der Bodendenkmalpflege, archäologische Strukturen so wenig wie möglich zu beeinträchtigen und sie in situ zu erhalten. Daher werden alternative nicht- und minimal-invasive Methoden, z. B. geophysikalische Prospektionen und Rammkernsondierungen, zur Exploration eingesetzt. Bei geophysikalischen Untersuchungen ergeben sich jedoch Schwierigkeiten durch ungenaue Tiefenwerte und die Methoden sind auf ausreichende Kontraste der gemessenen physikalischen Parameter angewiesen. Rammkernsondierungen ermöglichen einen direkten Zugriff auf die Sedimente, erzeugen jedoch wiederum ungenaue Tiefenwerte durch hohe Kompaktionsraten.
Aus diesem Grund sind die Implementierung alternativer Methoden und die Entwicklung neuer methodischer Ansätze für die Erforschung von Feuchtgebietsstandorten von herausragender Bedeutung.
Die Fossa Carolina, ein frühmittelalterlicher, heute teilweise verschütteter Kanal, ist ein solcher Standort. Das Bauwerk befindet sich in Süddeutschland in der Nähe von Treuchtlingen, südlich von Nürnberg und sollte eine schiffbare Verbindung zwischen dem Rhein-Main- und dem Donaueinzugsgebiet herstellen, indem es die europäische Hauptwasserscheide überbrückte.
Zur Erkundung des Bauwerks wurde als Alternative die in situ Direct-Push-Methode eingesetzt. Bei dieser Methode werden verschiedene Sonden in den unkonsolidierten Untergrund gedrückt und die Parameter in situ tiefengenau gemessen. (i) Dabei kamen die Farbsonde, engl. colour logging tool (CLT), und die Sonde zur Messung der elektrischen Leitfähigkeit, engl. electrical conductivity (EC) probe, zum Einsatz. (ii) Zur Erfassung archäologischer Strukturen und Befunde wurden die Sondierungen mit einer adaptiven Erkundungsstrategie auf einem Transekt engmaschig verteilt und somit ein hochaufgelöster Querschnitt des Bauwerks erfasst. (iii) Darüber hinaus wurden diese Prospektionen in einen räumlich-hierarchischen Multimethodenansatz integriert, indem in situ Direct-Push-Sondierungen mit z. B. geophysikalischen Erkundungen und Rammkernsondierungen kombiniert wurden.
Somit wurde (iv) ein tiefliegender, begrabener Abschnitt der Fossa Carolina im West-Ost-Bereich erkundet, dort die Schiffbarkeit für mindestens eine Schiffsbreite nachgewiesen und die Sedimentstratigraphie der Verfüllung beschrieben. Weiterhin wurde der Ansatz genutzt, um magnetische Anomalien im Umfeld des Kanals zu prospektieren. (v) Im nördlichen und nordöstlichen Bereich lieferten magnetische Anomalien Hinweise auf wasserzuführende Bauwerke im Untergrund. Die Erkundung ergab eine frühholozäne Struktur im nordöstlichen Bereich und eine historische Schotterstraße im nördlichen Bereich. (vi) Weiterhin konnte eine starke magnetische Anomalie mit parallelem Verlauf zum Kanal im nördlichen Bereich zeitlich und stratigraphisch dem Bauwerk zugeordnet werden. Somit konnte zum ersten Mal eine größere Spur des Baus außerhalb des Kanals nachgewiesen werden, auch wenn die Entstehung nicht abschließend geklärt werden konnte.
(vii) Im übergeordneten Kontext konnten die Daten der in situ Direct-Push-Transekte in einen 3D-Modellierungsansatz für die gesamte Fossa Carolina zur Quantifizierung des Aushubs integriert werden. (viii) Neben der Erforschung der Fossa Carolina wurde der methodische Ansatz zusätzlich an einem Feuchtgebietsstandort bei Pestenacker in Süddeutschland angewendet, um Informationen über die holozäne Auendynamik an der spätneolithischen Siedlung zu gewinnen.
Schlussendlich belegt die Dissertation das enorme methodische Potential der in situ Direct-Push-Erkundungen für die Prospektion von Bodendenkmälern. Dabei erweist sich insbesondere die Farbsonde als äußerst wirkungsvoll, was durch die gezielte Kombination in multi-methodischen Ansätzen noch verstärkt wird. Dies wird durch die aussagekräftigen Ergebnisse an der Fossa Carolina belegt, mit deren Hilfe insbesondere neue Erkenntnisse zur Schiffbarkeit, Wasserzuführung und Baustruktur gewonnen werden konnten.
Insgesamt demonstriert diese Dissertation den wertvollen Beitrag, den in situ Direct-Push-Methoden zur geoarchäologischen Forschung leisten können. Sie präsentiert sowohl einen neuen methodischen Ansatz als auch neue empirische Erkenntnisse zu einem frühmittelalterlichen Bauwerk.:Preface
