Conduct Matters: The Regulation of Social Work in England

Furness, Sheila M. January 2015 (has links)
No / From 1 August 2012, responsibility for regulation of social work transferred from the General Social Care Council (GSCC) to the Health and Care Professions Council ( HCPC). Professional regulation is seen as a way to safeguard the general public from dangerous and unsafe practice. Conduct processes and decision making must be seen to be reliable, appropriate and proportionate in order to assure this. This article reports on the findings and an analysis of GSCC conduct hearings held between April 2006 and July 2012. It considers some of the characteristics of appellants along with the types of sanction and proven misconduct. It is important that the HCPC maintains professional standards by investigating and taking action against those social workers who breach standards. Some comparisons will be made between the factors that have informed the decision making of GSCC and HCPC conduct panels in order to determine differences in the conduct decision-making process and identify ways that the regulator, educators and employers can support and encourage training and qualified social workers to practise competently and appropriately.

Negotiating Acceptability of the IUD: Contraceptive Technology, Women's Bodies, and Reproductive Politics

Takeshita, Chikako 25 May 2004 (has links)
In this dissertation, I deconstruct the commonly held assumption that the intrauterine device (IUD) is an unsafe and/or obsolete contraceptive method that has been used mostly to impose population control on women in developing countries. Simultaneously, I explore the changing meaning of the device over the last 40 years in varying socio-historical contexts. Capitalizing on the analytical tradition of science and technology studies that regards technology as socially constructed, I analyze the IUD as a technology that transformed through a series of material and discursive negotiations. Negotiations over the IUD took place in multiple layers, most notably in the social and political domains that defined the meaning of the contraceptive technology, but also in the domain of science, in which claims about the device's technical features and its relationship with the biological body were made. This work is divided into the examination of four major domains – global population politics, American contraceptive market, American antiabortion politics, and scientific research – within which the IUD took shape both materially and discursively. The historical development of the scientific research and discourse of IUDs are juxtaposed with the prevailing socio-political background to illustrate the intricate relationship between scientific research of contraceptive technology and the politics of fertility control. The final chapter addresses the agency of IUD users, introducing the ways in which women in developing countries have manipulated the IUD to achieve reproductive self-determination. / Ph. D.

An analysis of business partnerships of the National DECA Association

White, Rosanne T. 05 October 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to analyze 10 national corporations represented on the national business/industry advisory board of DECA, a national association of marketing education students. DECA's mission is to enhance the cocurricular education of students with interests in marketing, management, and entrepreneurship. DECA's National Advisory Board works directly with the association to influence its educational program that prepares students in career skills and job training. This study was designed to identify major factors, which contribute to successful business partnerships with this national association of marketing students. Upon conducting interviews with representatives of the 10 identified companies, the researcher found that the partnerships existed because each party received something. The companies gained present and future employees as a result of being able to recruit marketing students from DECA. Likewise, through the results of this study, it was determined by the researcher that DECA was able to link school and work through successful integrated education efforts nationwide. This undertaking resulted in building a responsive workforce preparation program. DECA also gained information about its National Advisory Board operations. / Ph. D.

Localising Professional Skills Development Strategies in the GCC: Research and Policy Considerations for Qatar

Weerakkody, Vishanth J.P., Al-Esmail, R., Hindi, N.M., Osmani, M., Irani, Zahir, Eldabi, T. 09 1900 (has links)
No / This paper examines the issues and challenges faced by Qatar, a developing Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) country, when localising established professional skills development strategies used in developed countries. The paper is based on the synthesis of viewpoint formed through the collective practical experiences of the authors. The paper posits that Qatar, a nation that is striving to move from an economy heavily reliant on oil and gas and the skills and competencies of foreign professionals to one that is knowledge driven and managed by its own citizens, needs to consider several micro, macro and policy level implications for implementing a meaningful professional skills development agenda. The unique demographic context as well as value and belief systems that are influenced by the social-cultural environment play a significant role in influencing the implementation of any performance assessment and management and the development of professional skills in the country.

Was the Decision to Invade Iraq and the Failure of Occupation Planning a Case of Groupthink?

Scheeringa, Daniel 27 August 2010 (has links)
This thesis examines the decision to invade Iraq and the failed planning for the occupation of Iraq. Since Janis introduced groupthink in 1972, the groupthink perspective has been used to explain foreign policy disasters such as the failure to anticipate the Pearl Harbor attack and the Bay of Pigs. However, the groupthink perspective is not universally useful for explaining foreign policy mishaps. While some have attributed the Iraq war to groupthink, the groupthink perspective has not been systematically applied to these events. This thesis will examine Janis's original groupthink theory, and subsequent research that tested the effectiveness of the groupthink perspective. It will apply the groupthink perspective to the events leading up to the invasion of Iraq. It will also examine the failed planning for the occupation of Iraq. The application of the groupthink perspective to both the invasion decision and occupation planning suggests that groupthink was not the primary cause of either event. The thesis will conclude by describing alternative explanations for the decision to invade Iraq, such as ideological agenda setting, and other cognitive errors besides groupthink. / Master of Arts

O conselho de acompanhamento e controle social do Fundef: um estudo de caso do município de São Paulo. / The council of accompaniment and social control of Fundef: a case study of municipality of São Paulo.

Santos, Katia Aparecida dos 03 August 2007 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation, which is a case study about the Council for the Accompaniment and Social Control (CACS) of the Fund for Development of Fundamental Education and Valorization of Teachers (FUNDEF) of the Municipality of São Paulo, is to investigate the actions of the Council Members while carrying out the activities of the Council and thus comprehend what the real conditions they had to carry out the accompaniment and the social control of FUNDEF\'s bills in the Municipality of São Paulo were. In addition to that, we also investigated the dynamics adopted by this Council to carry out its duties according to the Brazilian legislation, for being a recent-created Council in the Education history in Brazil. The case study was carried out using the Meeting Minutes and the Annual Reports written between the years of 1998 and 2006. Interviews with CACS members complemented this investigation. As a result of the study, it was possible to observe that during the first four managements they were not able to analyze FUNDEF\'s bills of the Municipality of São Paulo, only during the fifth management the Council Members were able to draw up a report of their management period. It was also observed that what hindered the Council Members\' performance was the lack of data to analyze the bills, the moroseness of the municipal public administration to name new Council Members, the troubles the Council Members have learning the Brazilian legislation and doing accounts during their managements, and the constant substitution of members, specially the segment of parents,. In spite of effectively having low interference in the actions of the Municipality Government, the Council (CACS) is an important place to discuss about the Democratic Management of the Education Financing.
