Marx, ontologie sociale et critique du capitalisme : une lecture des manuscrits économico-philosophiques de 1844 / Marx social ontology and critique of capitalism : a reading of the economic and philosophic manuscripts of 1844

Monferrand, Frédéric 08 April 2016 (has links)
What type of ontology is mobilized when one asserts that capitalism is a form of social organization which is specific and can be historically overcome? In order to answer this question, we proceed in this study to a reading of the Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844. Starting with an analysis of their young-Hegelian context of elaboration as well as of the stakes of their reception within Marxism, I argue that Marx in these manuscripts builds upon a critical description of the experience of alienation to develop a processual ontology of society. This ontology combines a theory of the alienated forms that structure the social world (money, division of labour, private property) and a theory of the content alienated under these forms (essential forces and objects, nature and species-being). The critical model that emerges here – which can be described as a “critical ontology of capitalism” - has produced profound effects on the different attempts by theoreticians, from Herbert Marcuse to Louis Althusser and from Georg Lukács to Antonio Negri, to confer to the project of a radical transformation of society the ontology it deserves. And it is by the evaluation of its effects that it become possible to formulate anew the question of the ruptures and continuities between the Manuscripts of 1844 and Capital.

Ideologies Toward Language Minority Students: A Study of Three Newspapers in Arizona

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: The presence of language minority students in American schools is a growing phenomenon in present-day times. In the year 2008, almost 11 million school-age children spoke a language other than English at home. Educational language policy is largely influenced by the attitudes that society holds regarding the presence of language minority speakers in the community. One of the sources of these attitudes is the written press. This research aimed at identifying and analyzing the ideologies that newspapers display in connection with language minority speakers. The underlying assumption of the study was that the English language occupies a dominant position in society, thus creating a power struggle in which speakers of other languages are disenfranchised. Using critical theory as the theoretical framework enabled the study to identify and oppose the ideologies that may reproduce and perpetuate social inequalities. The methodological approach used was critical discourse analysis (CDA) which aligns with the main tenets of critical theory, among them the need to uncover hidden ideologies. The analysis of articles from English-language (The Arizona Republic and the East Valley Tribune) and Spanish-language (La Prensa Hispana) newspapers allowed for the identification of the ideologies of the written press in connection to two main hypothetical constructs: education and immigration. The analysis of the results revealed that the three newspapers of the study held specific ideologies on issues related to the education of language minority students and immigration. Whereas the East Valley Tribune showed an overarching ideology connected to the opposition of immigrant students in schools, the hegemonic position of theEnglish language, and a belligerent stance toward the immigrant community, The Arizona Republic showed a favorable attitude to both English Language Learners and immigrants, based on reasons mainly related to the economic interest of the state of Arizona. La Prensa Hispana, on the other hand, showed ideologies favorable to the immigrant community based on humanitarianism. In summary, the results confirm that newspapers hold specific ideologies and that these ideologies are reflected in the content and the manner of their information to the public. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Curriculum and Instruction 2012

Tecnologia e sociedade : análise de tecnologias sociais no Brasil contemporâneo

Corrêa, Raquel Folmer January 2010 (has links)
This dissertation investigates how and to what extent the development of social technologies can influence the sustainability of local collectivities in the socioeconomic situation of social vulnerability in Brazil today. An Adornoesque Ethics: The Problem of Damaged Life

Wilburn, Heather 01 May 2014 (has links)
The problem that my dissertation addresses is the connection between modern reason and the ethical failures of modernity. My project is centered against the background of Enlightenment reason's project of rationalization, from which I argue that modern conceptions of ethics are problematic because they involve an abstraction from the reality of suffering individuals. I take up Adorno's response to this problematic and show that ethical reflection needs to be restored to the physical world of particulars in their damaged state. Philosophically, I press the need to reflect on ethical conditions and the values of our moral theories. My overall objective is to show how an Adornoesque ethics can position us in a critical and resistant mode of thinking within actual sites of suffering and damage in late modern conditions.

The present study intends to investigate specific aspects of the ideology concept transformation elaborated initially by Karl Marx in relation to the approach promoted later in 20th century by Critical Theory. This study is divided into two moments and initially we analyzed the principles and elaboration of the ideology concept within Marxist theory. We investigated the main thoughts that influenced Marx’s theory in order to go deeper in his specific analyses on the ideology concept. The theory of the ideology is central in all his work and holds several conceptual implications. During his life and production, Marx approached this concept in different ways, provoking, in his theoretical course, different readings. The first part will be destined to the study of the traditional Marxist conception on the ideology concept and, later, its elaboration in the theory of reification of Lukács. Certain discussions of Marxinian theory will be deepened and new approaches of social reality will be possible. The second moment of this study consists of the elaboration and analysis of the ideology concept for the Critical Theory, here represented by Horkheimer, Adorno and Marcuse. The constitution and the development of the concept in Critical Theory are characterized by an aspect of extreme complexity and heterogeneity. Placed at the Institute of Social Research, the study of these theoretical researchers can be approached singularly, even if many accomplished works have been born from partnerships and from apprehensions starting from a same problem. The ideology was focused in a first moment, in its traditional Marxist aspect as sphere of the dominance dissimulation, credited to the covering of the materiality. Differently, in the second moment of this study, investigated here through the Frankfurtians, the ideology started to be approached according to different qualitative... "Us Here, Them There": The Politics of Recognition in Israel-Palestine

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: The concept of recognition developed through the 20th century as a form of political legitimation has served a central if problematic role in understanding international politics. On the one hand, recognition aims toward establishing essential collective identities that must be conceived as relatively stable in order to then gain respect, receive political protection, and occupy both physical and discursive space. On the other hand, recognition tacitly accepts a social constructivist view of the subject who can only become whole unto itself – and in turn exercise positive liberty, freedom, or agency – through the implied assent or explicit consent of another. There is an inherent tension between these two understandings of recognition. The attempt to reconcile this tension often manifests itself in forms of symbolic and systemic violence that can turn to corporeal harm. In order to enter into the concept, history, politics and performativity of recognition, I focus on what is often viewed as an exceptionally complex and uniquely controversial case: the Israel-Palestine conflict. Undergoing a discourse analysis of three epistemic communities (i.e., the State/diplomatic network, the Academic/intellectual network, the Military-Security network) and their unique modes of veridiction, I show how each works to construct the notion of ethno-nationalism as a necessary political logic that holds the promise of everything put in its right place: Us here, Them there. All three epistemic communities are read as knowledge/power networks that have substantial effect on political subjects and subjectivities. Influenced by the philosophy of Hegel and Levinas, and supported by the works of Michel Foucault, Wendy Brown, Alphonso Lingis, Jacques Derrida, Patchen Markell, and others, I show the ways in which our current politics of recognition is best read as violence. By tracing three discursive networks of knowledge/power implicated in our modern politics of recognition, I demonstrate forms of symbolic violence waged against the entire complex of the Israel-Palestine conflict in ways that preclude a just resolution based on mutual empathy, acknowledgment, and (re)cogntion. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Political Science 2016

Illuminating the Medieval Hunt: Power and Performance in Gaston Fébus' Le livre de chasse

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: Vivid illuminations of the aristocratic hunt decorate Bibliothèque nationale de France, MS. fr. 616, an early fifteenth-century illuminated manuscript of Le livre de chasse composed by Gaston Fébus, Count of Foix and Viscount of Béarn (1331-1391 C.E.), in 1389. Gilded miniatures visualize the medieval park, an artificial landscape designed to facilitate the ideal noble chase, depicting the various methods to pursue, capture, and kill the prey within as well as the ritual dismemberment of animals. Medieval nobles participated in the social performance of the hunt to demonstrate their inclusion in the collective identity of the aristocracy. The text and illuminations of Le livre de chasse contributed to the codification of the medieval noble hunt and became integral to the formation of cultural memory which served as the foundation for the establishment of the aristocracy as different from other parts of society in the Middle Ages. This study contributes new information through examination of previously ignored sources as well as new analysis through application of critical theoretical frameworks to interpret the manuscript as a meaning-making object within the visual culture of the Middle Ages and analysis of the illuminations reveals the complexities surrounding one of the most important acts of performance for the medieval elite. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation History and Theory Of Art 2017

Based on the analysis of such curriculum, the aim is to check the accuracy of the categories of Critical Geography, in order to test how the concept of criticism is applied, as well as unveil politics questions that come up in the shape of such investigation. Its theoretical background are the subsidies offered by Critical Theory and by scientific developing of this way of thinking, to the educational and curriculum area.
