Reengineering Engineering: A Glimpse of Late Professionalism

Callaham, Arthur A. 03 March 2000 (has links)
The role of the engineer in the late capitalist society of the last half century has been misunderstood at best. The lack of a consistent job description for engineers in various fields, a lack of job security, and a lack of respect from both industry and society have spawned severe angst in the engineering community. A classic remedy for this situation has been the rallying of engineering practitioners under a banner of increased professionalism. If engineers could make themselves more like doctors and lawyers — the respected members of professional society — they would gain similar respect and job satisfaction. This project analyzes current state of engineering practice as revealed in the self-image of the individual engineer. A survey of popular engineering literature is employed in order to develop a composite self-image of the engineer: the technical hired hand of industry. "Professionalization" is then demonstrated to be useless in the improvement of this situation and furthermore, undesirable in the late capitalist social and economic climate of the late twentieth century. Late professionalism—an alternative to a understanding of professionalism—is offered as a means by which to improve the job satisfaction of engineers in contemporary society. Suggesting that each engineer is free to negotiate the terms, conditions, and length of his/her own employment based on a personal understanding of the job requirements, late professionalism empowers the engineer to adopt a comfortable position in the late capitalist economy. A new metaphor—the commissioned engineer—is employed in support of the late professional understanding of the engineer's occupation. / Master of Science

Theorizing the Emergence of the Rabble: A Genealogy of Redemptive Violence in Late Capitalism

Elliott, Kevin 02 January 2014 (has links)
Seizing upon G.W.F. Hegel’s unresolved problem of poverty, and more generally, of politics, in his Philosophy of Right, I theorize the emergence of Hegel’s “irrational” rabble in ostensibly incomprehensible violent riots. Specifically, I argue that such violence functions redemptively by latently symbolizing a Hegelian demand for recognition and, via Alain Badiou and Slavoj Žižek, as a catalyst in a lineation of riots that gestures towards transformative possibilities. Violence compels self-reflective thought to interrogate the hegemony of immaterial labour that excludes the rabble under late capitalism, a speculative game with winners and losers: financial capitalists and society’s underclass. I conclude by explicating an implicit connection between Hegel’s political theory and Walter Benjamin’s philosophy and argue that this connection responds to Hegel’s own political impasse. In the context of contemporary politics, I contend that the rabble’s emergence in a Benjaminian light illuminates new means for critique against the system of late capitalism. / Graduate / 0593 / 0422 / 0615 / elliokd@gmail.com

A categoria da totalidade na dialética negativa de Theodor W. Adorno / The category of totality in the negative dialectics of Theodor W. Adorno

Kugnharski, Gabriel Petrechen 23 February 2018 (has links)
This research aims to investigate the category of totality in the late Theodor W. Adorno, specially in Negative Dialectic, and its relation with the time diagnosis of the 1960s. Despite his emphatic criticism of the category of totality, Adorno still uses it in several fields of his analysis, such as the diagnosis of late capitalism through the concept of administered world. If, however, the totality must be exposed only in its negativity, or if it still keeps in itself, in a certain way, a normative horizon, is a question that does not reach consensus in the secondary literature, and which will be developed in our research. Therewith, we intend to achieve a better understanding of Adorno\'s own project of a negative dialectic and of its relation with the time diagnosis proposed by the philosopher in the 1960s.

January 2008 (has links)
Orientador: Sinésio Ferraz Bueno / Banca: Renato Bueno Franco. This study is divided into two moments and initially we analyzed the principles and elaboration of the ideology concept within Marxist theory. We investigated the main thoughts that influenced Marx's theory in order to go deeper in his specific analyses on the ideology concept. The theory of the ideology is central in all his work and holds several conceptual implications. During his life and production, Marx approached this concept in different ways, provoking, in his theoretical course, different readings. The first part will be destined to the study of the traditional Marxist conception on the ideology concept and, later, its elaboration in the theory of reification of Lukács. Certain discussions of Marxinian theory will be deepened and new approaches of social reality will be possible. The second moment of this study consists of the elaboration and analysis of the ideology concept for the Critical Theory, here represented by Horkheimer, Adorno and Marcuse. The constitution and the development of the concept in Critical Theory are characterized by an aspect of extreme complexity and heterogeneity. Placed at the Institute of Social Research, the study of these theoretical researchers can be approached singularly, even if many accomplished works have been born from partnerships and from apprehensions starting from a same problem. The ideology was focused in a first moment, in its traditional Marxist aspect as sphere of the dominance dissimulation, credited to the covering of the materiality. Differently, in the second moment of this study, investigated here through the Frankfurtians, the ideology started to be approached according to different qualitative... / This dissertation analyzes the work of American artist Jeff Koons (1955-) in search of a better understanding of the place occupied by the field of visual arts in contemporary culture. Simultaneously legitimized by the most important legitimizing art institutions, fought over by collectors and recognized and admired by an audience far wider than the limited circuit of regular exhibition goers, Koons is situated in a privileged vantage point from which to study the multiple crossings between art and the commodity in a capitalist system of production and circulation. Through an investigation into the elements that make up a popular and petit bourgeois aesthetic commonly identified by the term “kitsch”, the artist has been putting under review, for over three decades, some of the biases that anchor the values of the field of visual arts, questioning the demarcations that guarantee the art field an alleged autonomy in relation to the degraded universe of the commodity. By analyzing the formal and thematic characteristics and the modes of production of his work, we seek to understand aesthetic experience in a system in which symbolic goods are commodities like so many others.

Framing “contemporaneity” in public museums of art and visual culture in the 21st Century : A study of the impact of acquisition policies of the Moderna Museet and M+ through the lens of actor-network theories

Lam, Chi Hang January 2021 (has links)
In the 21st century, public museums who are collecting contemporary art has simultaneously begun to reframe the role of museums in society. Two museums – the Moderna Museet of Stockholm and M+ of Hong Kong that have completely different historic and geographic backgrounds, as well as operating models are now working closely with their acquisitions and collections to draw audience of old and new closer to them. These two museums that are located in the center of two well-defined cultures – geographically representing the west and the east, play vital roles in their respected social and cultural spheres. In view of how these two museums are responding to the present time by deploying art that are seemingly different in terms of theme and discipline, the immediate distinction that this study aims to frame is how the Moderna Museet, established in the 20th century and still prevailing in the present differ from M+ that comes from a younger generation of museums who proclaims itself as a museum of visual culture, and not art. Instead of analyzing their exhibitions, this study focuses on their policies of acquisitions, thus offering a perspective including many varying actors and networks. Hence Bruno Latour’s actor-network theories have been introduced to unfold the highly entangled networks of these two museums. Two important actants, the so-called acquisition policy and the institutional curators are taken into consideration in order to outline what constitute as acquisition policies of these two museums and investigate if the benchmarking of contemporary art, and in addition, if the notion of contemporaneity can be identified from written documents. Furthermore, this study is based on interviews with curators employed at the two museums to find out how the professionals have understood these policies and used them accordingly to justify their practices while fulfilling the museums’ missions. This study has found out there are many crucial relationships between these actants and that they are constantly interacting with each other. The strength and interaction of these relationships fostered the positioning for these two museums today and also determined how the knowledge of art can be shaped and dispensed to the public. Looking from the point of view of the history of museums, practices of donation and acquisition, late- capitalism, cultural differences between the west and east, this study provides a pragmatic explanation of how collections may transform the landscape of a museum, and in turn how a museum may perhaps alter the meaning of art.

"Att jobba bara för att jobba" : En diskursanalys om industriarbetares inställning till arbete inom ramen för den senkapitalistiska arbetslinjen / Work for work´s sake : A Discourse Analysis of Industrial Workers Attitudes towards Labour given ”Arbetslinjen” in the Late Capitalist Welfare State

Johannesson, Camilla January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this research paper is to identify and explore industrial workers attitudes towards labour considering the context of the late capitalist welfare state and the political term ”Arbetslinjen”. Furthermore the paper aims to critically examine how practices of power and resistance operates in the postmodern factory. The study relates this notion to a discourse analysis framework in addition to a foucauldian understanding of power, discipline and resistance. Theory is used to argue that factory workers attitudes are influenced by institutionalized and hegemonic discourse that constitute wage labour as the macro-political norm. Additionally the study asserts that wage workers basis for work-related resistance is conditional given power relations in the capitalist production hierarchy in addition to the rise of temporary work agencies. The empirical data consists of qualitative interviews with ten industrial workers which are all involved in the Swedish car or food manufacturing industry. Throughout the study applies a social constructionist approach, consequently the cardinal focus of my analysis is subjective attitudes and perceptions of the constitution of wage labour generally, and industrial work particularly.
