Diploma thesis "Television formats transmission into Czech environment since the creation of the dual system in the Czech Republic" focuses on television formats which have been adapted in the Czech television industry since 1994. TV formats, the primary analytical object of this thesis, belong among the strongest aspects of media globalization. Since specific television formats spread the same structure, idea and concept, they increasingly influence the practice in television markets and the process of globalization all over the world. With this continuity, the paper describes the theory of globalization, focusing on cultural and media imperialism. Further, newer theories of globalization and their subsequent transformation are described. Based on this theoretical basis, the thesis describes, which TV formats have been adapted since 1994 in the Czech Republic. Our analysis is based on in-depth interviews with Czech television professionals who have experiences with the purchasing and subsequent adaptation of television formats. The thesis provides the overview of all adapted TV formats in the Czech Republic, and describes reasons, difficulties and the overall process of adapting licensed television formats. José, Joe, Zé Carioca: Walt Disney's Good Neighbor Colonial "Monument" in BrazilNelson, Andrew Kelly 01 February 2017 (has links)
Although Walt Disney's early animated feature films were successful, a variety of economic, operational, and external forces required him to continually be on the cutting edge of new ideas and technologies in order for his studio to continue operations. Latin America became the studio's source of inspiration in the early 1940s, sprouting from Walt Disney's involvement with the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs. Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros were the result. While many critics have decried Disney's involvement in Latin America as being an apparatus of cultural imperialism and economic exploitation, they almost universally give him credit for his pursuit of cultural authenticity within the films. They are, however, sparing in what ways such was done and are reticent in declaring that he fulfilled that quest. As one who was involved politically and economically in the shaping of a nation, with his enterprise benefiting as a result, Walt Disney can in fact be seen as a colonial, imperial power. Within Brazil, José Carioca was the "monument" he erected to that end. Unlike full-fledged colonial figures in earlier centuries, however, his "monument" was overall friendly and was not based on the image of a sovereign leader, but a character that was intended to be seen as native. Where Disney was bound by the interests of the government he represented, and consequentially the Brazilian government, his "monument" was imbued with hues that were inherently skewed toward those entities; however, he worked within those parameters to present a credible image. This thesis seeks to substantiate those ways and how the original monument-like figure Disney erected in the Brazilian public square, the image of José Carioca in Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros, led to unity—and not division—as most imperial monuments had done in earlier centuries. A possible explanation as to how Disney's multiple nuanced iterations of the character leads to such critique of the original "monument" will also be provided.

Forme d’expression visuelle nouvelle, divertissement populaire égalitaire, véhicule privilégié du modèle américain dans le pays et à l’étranger, le cinéma s’affirme, dès ses premières années d’existence, comme un acteur majeur de l’américanisation du monde. Un de ses thèmes de prédilections est l’espace américain, et par extension ses paysages, qui ravit et fascine les spectateurs d’un bout à l’autre de la planète. Les mises en scène du territoire national et de sa géographie spécifique sont complexes car elles intègrent des éléments réalistes et une dimension imaginaire. It was a new kind of visual expression, an egalitarian form of popular entertainment and the best vehicle to convey the American way of life in the US and abroad. Therefore, cinema became, from its inception, a key participant in the Americanization of the world. One of its favorite topics was American space and its landscapes, which pleased and amazed movie-goers around the world. The way in which national territory and its specific geography were staged in films was complex because it intertwined realistic elements and a mythical dimension. That kaleidoscopic representation of the United States enabled the promotion of American values in a modern international society, transformed by the rise of urbanization and industrialization. Cinematic America, as it was created by the early motion pictures industry, offered landmarks to the spectator, somewhat lost in the emerging new world order.

Including children in decision making and in the search for development solutions – PDC & PR4D – is also being advocated by the U.N. and Plan International especially with regards to issues that affect children.This paper will explore how children’s books open spaces for dialogic communication with children by examining how we define them, how we speak about them, how we speak for them, how we speak to them and how they may talk back through children’s texts.The aim is to relate elements of traditional storytelling to modern forms of dialogic communication and, by extension, to development goals: “helping adults understand children’s issues through their lens” (Commissioner for Children, Tasmania).

Les faces contemporaines de l'oppression à travers la pensée politique d’Iris Marion YoungFarhat, Saja 12 1900 (has links)
Ce mémoire présente une étude des travaux de Young sur « Les cinq faces de l’oppression » dans le but d’explorer plus en détail certains enjeux contemporains, en se concentrant particulièrement sur les manifestations discrètes ou invisibilisées des injustices, analysées à travers le prisme de « trois faces de l’oppression ». La pensée politique de Young critique les tendances réductionnistes du paradigme libéral rawlsien en philosophie politique anglo-américaine, qui tend à occulter les expériences singulières de l’oppression en simplifiant leur complexité jusqu’à des questions de redistribution. Bien que Young ne nie jamais l’importance de la justice distributive, ses travaux mettent en lumière des concepts tels que la marginalisation, l’impuissance et l’impérialisme culturel, soulignant leur importance comme outils analytiques pour identifier et comprendre d'autres dimensions de l’injustice dans le monde contemporain. Tout d’abord, ce mémoire expose la manière dont la marginalisation prive les groupes sociaux de ressources essentielles et d’opportunités, confinant les individus à des rôles qui limitent leur autonomie et alimentent des sentiments d'inutilité, d'ennui et de dévalorisation personnelle. Ensuite, cette étude traite de l'impuissance vécue par les non-professionnels, souvent privés de pouvoir décisionnel et de respectabilité dans la division contemporaine du travail. Finalement, l'analyse de l'impérialisme culturel révèle la façon dont l'universalisation des expériences et des valeurs du groupe dominant peut subjuguer les identités culturelles et les réalités sociales des groupes subordonnés, produisant ainsi des injustices épistémiques. En affinant notre analyse des diverses dimensions de l’injustice, ce mémoire aspire à enrichir notre compréhension de la justice sociale / This thesis conducts a study on Young's "Five Faces of Oppression," aiming to delve into contemporary issues, especially focusing on subtle or overlooked injustices through the lens of "three faces of oppression." It critiques the reductionist tendencies of the Rawlsian liberal paradigm in Anglo-American political philosophy for oversimplifying oppression to mere questions of redistribution. Young highlights concepts like marginalization, powerlessness, and cultural imperialism as analytical tools to understand different dimensions of injustice. The thesis discusses how marginalization deprives social groups of essential resources and autonomy, explores the powerlessness of non-professionals in the labor division, and examines how cultural imperialism can subjugate subordinate groups' identities, leading to epistemic injustices. This study aims to deepen the understanding of social justice by refining the analysis of injustice's varied dimensions.

Despite policy efforts by the Chinese state to eradicate gender inequality, statistics show that the issue of gender discrimination in the work domain has become increasingly acute in modern day China. The prevailing gender inequality derives from China’s deeply rooted masculine oriented cultural and societal structure, and traditional norms and values towards women in the work domain are fighting the policies against gender inequality that the Chinese state has implemented. Studies show that foreign affiliations have the ability to transplant corporate culture internationally, which also infers a transplantation of certain policies. One of the many western countries that have seen its corporations establish offices in China is Sweden - a country which puts a lot of focus and emphasis on promoting gender equality. Chinese and Swedish cultural and societal structure differs a lot, and so does the focus on gender equality. The theory suggests that gender equality is highly prioritized in Sweden, while it is less prioritized in China. This constitutes an interesting phenomena regarding how managers at Swedish based corporations, established in Shanghai, manage Swedish gender equality policies cross-culturally. The purpose of this study is to describe and explore how Swedish based corporations that are established in Shanghai, China, manage gender equality policies cross-culturally. In order to answer our research question, we performed four face to face semi-structured interviews together with four suitable Swedish based corporations at their offices in Shanghai. The results from this study concluded that the Swedish based corporations transfer the vast majority of their policy framework to their offices in Shanghai, particularly gender equality policies. The gender equality policies were often included in the corporations Corporate Social responsibility (CSR) framework. The study could conclude that even though no adaption was done to the policy documents per se, the Swedish corporations did adapt modestly to how they manage the policies in practice in Shanghai. This followed as a consequence of a wish to respectfully adapt to Chinese legal and cultural prerequisites. Due to China's legal prerequisites, some policies, such as parental leave, could not be fully implemented at the Shanghai offices. In other words, in those instances, the policy documents were trumped by legal employment regulations. Cultural prerequisites affected how the managers in the shanghai offices dealt with the policy documents in practice. Our study could found that policy management was closely connected to the corporate culture in the Shanghai offices. Our study could thus conclude that the Swedish based corporations adapt the policy management in practice to the meet Chinese culture, without compromising the Swedish corporate culture and values. / Oberoende av de satsningar som den kinesiska staten har infört för att utrota ojämlikhet mellan män och kvinnor visar statistik att könsdiskriminering inom kinas företagsvärld ökar. Den rådandeojämlikheten härstammar från Kinas maskulint orienterade samhälle, och traditionella normer och värderingar motarbetar de jämställdhetsfrämjande policyer som den kinesiska staten har implementerat. Studier visar att globala företag har möjlighet att överföra och etableraföretagskulturen internationellt, vilket även innefattar specifika policyer. Ett land vars företag har etablerat många företagskontor i Kina är Sverige: ett land som har ett högt fokus på att främjajämställdhet. Den kinesiska kulturen och dess samhällsstruktur skiljer sig avsevärt från den svenska, vilket även inkluderar att arbetet för jämställdhet skiljer sig mycket mellan de två länderna. För att besvara vår forskningsfråga har vi genomfört fyra semi-strukturerade intervjuer med fyra lämpligt utvalda svenska företag på deras kontor i Shanghai. Resultatet av vår studie visar att de svenska företagen överför majoriteten av sina policyer till kontoren i Shanghai, framförallt de policyerna som är relaterade till jämställdhet. Dessa jämställdhetspolicyer är oftast inkluderade i företagens ramverk för Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR, företagets samhällsansvar). Studien kan dra slutsatsen att svenska företag inte anpassar innehållet och betydelsen av sina jämställdhetspolicyer, men att de anpassar och förändrar hur de hanterar och arbetar med dem på kontoren i Shanghai. Anledningen till anpassningen är att de svenska företagen vill bemöta kinas kulturella och legala förutsättningar. Till följd av Kinas legala förutsättningar kan inte alla policyer etableras likadant i Shanghai som i Sverige; exempelvis vad gäller föräldraledighet. Sådana policyer övervins av de lokala legala bestämmelserna. De kulturella skillnaderna påverkar hur chefer på de kinesiska kontoren hanterar policyerna i praktiken. Studien visar att policyhantering är nära relaterat till företagskultur, och att det är genom företagskulturen som policyerna hanteras i praktiken. Således visar studien att de svenska företag som deltog i vår forskning anpassar hur de hanterar jämställdhetspolicyer i praktiken för att bemöta den kinesiskakulturen, utan att kompromissa den svenska företagskulturen och dess värderingar.

Vilken roll har den kulturella globaliseringen på visuell design i tidningsbranschen? Medier är i konstant rörelse och världen har blivit ett öppet kulturellt utrymme där olika kulturer kan förmedlas via medier. Företag globaliserar sin verksamhet vilket gör att kulturella produkter som Coca-Cola och Nike är välkända runt om i världen. Samtidigt diskuteras de konsekvenser som globaliseringen av kulturella produkter kan ha på världen och om detta leder till homogenisering eller hybridisering av kultur. Kvinnomagasinet Cosmopolitan är ett globalt varumärke som existerar i över 100 länder. Den fråga som uppstår är om en stark kulturell produkt som Cosmopolitan har satt en standard för andra kvinnomagasins estetiska uttryck i andra länder. Vilka likheter och skillnader finns det i den visuella designen mellan det amerikanska kvinnomagasinet och populära kvinnomagasin i andra länder? I denna studie analyserades den visuella designen på populära kvinnomagasins omslag i Brasilien, Förenade Arabemiraten, Indien, Thailand, Tjeckien och USA under året 2012 och urvalet av länder baserades på religiös tillhörighet i de olika länderna. Eftersom religion är intimt förknippat med kultur var detta ett effektivt sätt i ett försök att få material som representerade olika kulturer i världen. Genom att använda både en kvantitativ och kvalitativ innehållsanalys kunde flera olika delar av materialet analyseras på olika nivåer. Resultatet av vår undersökning visade att det finns en variation av både likheter och skillnader i den visuella designen på kvinnomagasinens omslag. Med hjälp av teorier i kultur och globalisering gick det att se att både homogenisering och hybridisering av kultur är aktuellt inom tidningsbranschen, då det verkar finnas en viss standardisering av visuell design, samtidigt som det finns en blandning av kulturella referenser. Studien visar att kulturell globalisering kan påverka den visuella designen på kulturella produkter på olika sätt och öppnar upp för intressant vidare forskning inom ämnen som kulturell globalisering, homogenisering och hybridisering av kultur samt hur kulturella estetiska uttryck kan ta form i olika kulturer. / What role does cultural globalization have regarding visual design in the magazine industry? The media is in constant motion and the world has become a more open cultural space where different cultures can be communicated through media. Companies globalize their business, which makes cultural products like Coca-Cola and Nike well known all around the world. There are discussions about the implications that globalization of cultural products will have on the world and if this might lead to homogenization or hybridization of culture. The women's magazine Cosmopolitan is a global brand that exists in over a 100 countries. The question that arises is whether a strong cultural product that Cosmopolitan is setting a standard forwomen’s magazines in other countries regarding their aesthetic expressions. What kind of similarities and differences are there in the visual design of the American women's magazine and popular women's magazines in other countries? This study analyzed the visual design on covers of popular women’s magazines in Brazil, United Arab Emirates, India, Thailand, the CzechRepublic and the United States over the year 2012. The selection of countries was based on religious affiliation in the different countries and since religion is closely related to culture, this was an effective way in an attempt to access material that represented different cultures in the world. By using both a quantitative and qualitative content analysis, several different parts of the material could be analyzed on different levels. The results of our study showed that there are a variety of both similarities and differences in the visual design of women's magazines covers. Using theories about culture and globalization made it possible to see that both homogenization and hybridization of culture is current in the magazine industry. There seems to be some kind of standardization of visual design but at the same time, there is also a mix of cultural references on the covers. The study shows that cultural globalization can affect the visual design of cultural products in different ways and opens up for interesting topics in further research, such as cultural globalization, homogenization and hybridization of culture and how cultural aesthetic expressions takes shape in various cultures.

This thesis named "Anti-Americanism and Canadian Cultural Policy (1928-1957)" examines how Canadian federal government cultural policies were influenced by a specific form of anti-Americanism, which reflected concerns over Americanization and cultural absorption by the United States, in this formative period for the development of a distinct national identity during the time of Canada's colony-to-nation transition. The chosen research design is interpretative content analysis of the reports of two Canadian royal commissions commonly known as the Aird Commission (1928-1929) and the Massey Commission (1949-1951). The aim of this thesis is to identify the main factors and incentives for a policy of government intervention in the field of culture and to assess the role of anti-Americanism as a response to what was perceived as American cultural invasion that threatened the development of a distinct Canadian culture. The theoretical framework contains a discussion about different forms of anti-Americanism, with emphasis on its unique nature in Canada, and introduces the concept of cultural imperialism which helps us to better understand Canadian opposition to American cultural influences in the examined period.

From Pre-Islam to Mandate States: Examining Cultural Imperialism and Cultural Bleed in the LevantWillman, Gabriel 01 August 2013 (has links)
To a large degree, historical analyses of the Levantine region tend to focus primarily upon martial interaction and state formation. However, perhaps of equitable impact is the chronology of those interactions which are cultural in nature. The long-term formative effect of cultural imperialism and cultural bleed can easily be as influential as the direct alterations imposed by martial invasion. While this study does not attempt to establish comparative causal weight or catalytic impact between these types of interactions, it does contend that the cultural evolution of the Levant has been significantly influenced by external interaction for a period of time extending beyond the Levantine Islamic Expansion. This study presents a chronological examination of the region from the pre-Expansion Period through the Mandate Period, focused upon relevant cultural structures. Specifically, emphasis is placed upon religious, ethnic, and nationalistic identity development, sociolinguistic shifts, and institutional changes within the societal structure. The primary conclusion of this study is that significant evidence exists to support a long-term historical narrative of externally influenced Levantine cultural evolution, inclusive of both adaptive and reactive interactions.
