Monkey See, Monkey Do: How Academia Turned Curious George Into a Racial Commentary

Roper, Matthew 23 June 2008 (has links)
Academics have raised questions concerning racial imaging in the popular children’s book Curious George. Many of these scholars utilize symbolism to warn readers of hidden messages in the book that negatively affect black children. One of the most prominent images includes the capture of an African monkey by a white man, which academics believe reflects American slave history. These arguments, however, fail to address three important issues this research project emphasizes to properly reinterpret an image. First, one must properly outline a historically racist image such as the American Sambo in order to determine who created the image, what messages are being portrayed by it, and why these messages are important to the image’s creator and audience. Following the outline of a racial image, the next step is to view the rise and fall of another popular children’s book in order to determine how society interprets books over time. The rise in popularity to the outright banning of Helen Bannerman’s The Story of Little Black Sambo in the twentieth century fits this requirement because an extensive academic and social archive detailing the book’s racial debate exists in newspaper articles, editorials, and academic journals. Lastly, this project examines personal and business correspondence of Curious George’s authors, Margret and Hans Rey, and reinterprets the Curious George stories as a mirror of the Reys’ immigration history.

Reading with Your Ears : A comparative study of reading and listening to Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Winqwist, Therese January 2010 (has links)

“Reading with Your Ears” is a comparative study of comprehension in reading a text versus listening to an audio book. The text excerpt is from Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and has been read or listened to by seventh-grade students. The results show that the readers understand more from the text since they can read at their own speed and see the pictures in the book. The listeners, on the other hand, seem unaccustomed to listening and have troubles focusing.

From Obstacle to Opportunity : making reading meaningful in the classroom

Andreasson, Martina January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to learn how I as a teacher can work with reading in different ways to promote learning for students in upper secondary school. This is discussed with examples from Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and Randa Abdel-Fattah's Does My Head Look Big In This?. In this study, I found out that there are many factors that contribute to students' attitude towards reading and that affect their experience of a text. These factors consist of five emotions that affect reader response: assimilation, accommodation, sympathy, memories and identification, as well as four categorizing factors: age, gender, ethnicity and class. Knowing these factors, we teachers have the tools to turn students' resistance to reading into something positive, and by doing this, we open up a myriad of learning opportunities through reading.

Ett ord säger mer än tusen bilder : En konstnärlig undersökning om att skriva text utifrån karaktärer, scener och känslor från en film / One word says more than a thousand images. : An artistic study about writing text based on characters, scenes and emotions from a film.

Callander, David January 2020 (has links)

A Director's Take on The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Williams, Billie 01 May 2023 (has links) (PDF)
This paper examines what it is like to be an assistant director. The play, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time was adapted from a book by Mark Hadden that is structured as if the main character was the writer. The stage production reworks that concept and turns it into a “play within a play”. The story is about a boy named Christopher, his broken family and his struggle with autism. When the director, Cara Harker first approached me about being an assistant director, I struggled with anxiety and not feeling like I had a real place in the show. After some time working with the director, I found my place in the production and learned a lot about directing.

Together in every bite: support your child to become a curious eater

Dunay, Nadya Goldman 23 August 2022 (has links)
Eating and feeding are skills learned in early childhood that are important to human survival. These activities are complex and require physical, sensory, cognitive, and behavioral skills. Understanding the nature of picky eating and addressing it in this essential developmental period is critical to establishing healthy eating habits that persist into adulthood. Educating and equipping parents and caregivers with the tools they need to support their child will create healthy, sustainable eating habits. Picky eating is a concern for parents of children at all developmental stages that is frequently associated with parent stress and mealtime disruptions. Researchers often refer to picky eating as a passing childhood phase; however, clinical studies and longitudinal results indicate that picky eating could persist into adulthood and cause obesity, cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, and respiratory problems. Three main factors cause picky eating: the child, the caregiver, and the mealtime climate. Together in Every Bite is a virtual hands-on parent education program that aims to educate parents and caregivers to establish healthy habits around mealtime and decrease picky eating behavior in children in their early developmental stages (6-24 months) and decrease mealtime stress and anxiety. Caregivers will engage in problem-solving and plan-building activities coinciding with the learned material, developing their self-efficacy and confidence while reducing stress and anxiety. The program director will also distribute valuable information provided through this platform to health professionals who work with parents of infants. This paper outlines the relevant literature and theory, and the evaluation, funding, and dissemination plans for Together in Every Bite.

UNCANNY TRACES : Furniture and objects made of what used to be someone’s skin

Geiger Ohlin, Erika January 2019 (has links)
Through non-human animals, humans have come to understand ways of living in this world and simultaneously animals have provided the resources for humans to claim this living. But through this progression and time humans have become detached from the origin of the resources. By this separation it becomes possible for humans to turn a blind eye to cruelty and the environmental impact that the claim to non-human animals convey. With the aim is to evoke reflection on the human ruling of the non-human animals, this project aims to design objects and furniture that are uncanny, familiar and ordinary but at the same time off-putting and maybe strange. By examining phycology and consumer culture theory, seek to find habits in the Swedish everyday life which are intimate and recognizable such as fredagsmys, a placeholder for consumption and hierarchies. Then through the analyse of critical animal studies, design objects and furniture that challenge these habits and positions of consumption and hierarchy.

Synen på bibliotek förändras inte på en dag : En utvärdering av klusterkampanjen "Den digitalt nyfikne" på ett folkbibliotek / The view on libraries doesn't change in a day : An evaluation on the campaign "The digitally curious" on a public library

Karlsson, Sofie, Blom, Emmy January 2012 (has links)
This thesis is an evaluation of the campaign [The digitally curious] that is part of the regional marketing campaign Futurum.kom. Its purpose was to strengthen the library's role in society. The campaign includes Regionbibliotek Kalmar, Länsbibliotek Sydost and also 25 public libraries in Kronoberg, Kalmar and Blekinge. The campaign [The digitally curious] is one of several cluster campaigns targeting their marketing to a specific audience and aims to promote awareness of what libraries have to offer and provide information on digital media and services. The target group for the campaign is a man between 45-65 years old, who is interested in digital technology. The campaign ran from September 19 to October 2, 2011, and included digital activities. The thesis addresses these questions: What has the campaign [The digitally curious] for overall goals and how relevant were they? What was the audience for [The digitally curious] and did they reach it? What marketing channels did the library use and why them? To what extent did the librarians perceive that the objectives of the campaign were achieved? How did the public value the digital activities in the public library and how did they perceive the cluster campaigns, [The digitally curious], message. The method used in the thesis was case studies, which included a survey of the public, interviews with librarians and document analysis. Our study revealed that there is a need in society for digital activities to bridge the digital divide. The marketing campaign received positive feedback but the target group did not come to the extent that was desired. It was also revealed that to be successful in marketing and to work on bridging the digital divide, collaboration is a useful method.

Turning Back Time: Duration, Simultaneity, and the Timeless in Fitzgerald and Fincher's Benjamin Button

Wagner, Nathan 01 December 2010 (has links)
This MA thesis seeks to apply Henri Bergson’s theory of time to a reading of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” and David Fincher’s film adaptation of the text, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. By applying Bergson’s notions of durée and simultaneity, timeless moments will be seen to emerge in the text and the film. I place Fitzgerald’s text in context with other seminal modernist works in order to provide a study of the importance of the story within its time period. Through Deleuze’s application of Bergson to cinema, I analyze the evolution of the time-image within Fincher’s film, and place it within the context of a cinema of time. Ultimately, this thesis begins a discussion of the importance of how F. Scott Fitzgerald and Fincher’s works contribute meditations on time in their respective time periods and media.
