The Effects of Habitat Parameters on the Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation of the Udzungwa Red Colobus Monkey (Procolobus gordonorum)Steel, Ruth January 2012 (has links)
<p>A central theme in animal ecology is the study of the relationship between ecology and behavior. This dissertation demonstrates how ecological parameters, particularly food and weather variables, correlate with ranging, activity budget, and diet in Udzungwa red colobus monkeys (URC, <italic>Procolobus gordonorum</italic>), endemic to the Udzungwa Mountains, Tanzania. </p><p> From April 2009 - March 2010, four URC groups were habituated and studied in Mwanihana and Magombera Forests. During all-day follows, ranging, activity budget, and diet data were collected using GPS units and ten-minute scan samples of sustained activities. Food characteristics were assessed using transect and phenology surveys. Preliminary nutritional analyses were conducted on species-specific parts fed upon during October. I designed and employed novel methods for estimating ranging statistics which were compared with conventional methods.</p><p> Home range sizes were relatively small (8.8 - 20.8 ha). Home range size may relate to food species diversity and feeding selectivity for species-specific food parts. Variability in dietary composition was partly explained by plant phenology, forest composition, and selectivity differences among groups. URC primarily fed upon young leaves with higher fat content. Some non-nutritive items eaten may function as detoxifying agents. Data suggest that the URC dietary strategy involves nutrient balancing (i.e. maximizing energetic intake and nutrient acquisition while avoiding high concentrations of particular plant secondary compounds).</p><p> Mean daily travel distance (DTD) was 970 m, longer than in other red colobus taxa. DTD was shorter in October and November when temperatures were warmer and a high abundance of young growth became available. Young growth comprised the majority of all groups' diets in each sample period. When young growth abundances were highest, Magombera groups traveled shorter distances. One group's DTD did not differ seasonally and was significantly longer compared to other groups. This group may have traveled longer distances and spent less time resting in order to consume young growth in a habitat with lower young growth abundances. A correlation between time spent resting and temperature suggests behavioral prevention of hyperthermia. URC energetic strategies may involve balancing thermoregulation with maximizing energy intake. Conservation recommendations are discussed and include stricter forest protection.</p> / Dissertation

Pursuing Women-Empowerment in the Public Transport System : A case study in SwedenEmami, Leila January 2020 (has links)
This case study applies women's empowerment and feminist theories to discuss the transport system's possible link with women empowerment and understand how a gender-responsive transport system based on women's complex needs would empower them and improve their status of health and well-being. The research area is two small urban in Sweden with less than 1500 populations. The present study investigates the local women's mobility behavior to discover their daily travel challenges. Moreover, determining whether the local transport project, including the train station's commencement, is gender-aware in the policymaking and implementation part and conscious about the gender-mainstreaming and gender equality policies. This research practices the qualitative method by employing semi-structured interviews with a small sample-group of women in the regions. The interpretation of data is being used as the theoretical knowledge approach. Besides, when the COVID-19 pandemic changed people's mobility behavior, they avoided using public transport for safety measurements and working from home. The research's last aim is to observe any change in people's mindset, behavior, and trust level in public transport. The result shows a clear connection between the transportation system and women's empowerment and their well-being. The study presents having gender-awareness perspectives, and raising gender consciousness is necessary if the ultimate aim is designing an equitable transport system to support women's empowerment. The research demonstrates that women still trust and prefer the public transport system and are ready to use it again after the COVID-19 and familiar situation.

Inégalités sociales et territoriales de mobilité et d’accidents corporels de la route chez les jeunes / Socioeconomic inequalities in daily travel and road traffic injuries among the youngLicaj, Idlir 18 April 2011 (has links)
L’objectif de la thèse est de mesurer en France l’influence des inégalités socioéconomiques individuelles et contextuelles sur la mobilité, l’incidence et la gravité des accidents corporels chez les enfants et les jeunes de moins de 25 ans. Des analyses originales sont effectuées à partir des bases de données suivantes : le Registre des Victimes d’accidents corporels de la circulation du Rhône, l’enquête ménage déplacement (EMD) de 2005-06 et une enquête épidémiologique de type cas-témoins réalisée durant la thèse. Excepté pour les victimes à deux-roues à moteur les incidences d’accidents lors de l’usage des différents modes de transports (voiture, vélo, marche et rollers) sont plus élevées chez les habitants des communes d’habitation défavorisées. Le sexe est également un facteur déterminant et très variable selon les modes de transport. L’effet de facteurs socioéconomiques sur la gravité des blessures d’accidents des jeunes, les différences socioéconomiques individuelles et contextuelles d’usage des modes de transports, de motorisation des ménages et d’accès au permis de conduire sont également étudiés. L’enquête de type cas témoins permet ensuite de pousser l’investigation en s’intéressant simultanément aux accidents, à la mobilité et à certains facteurs intermédiaires comme les comportements à risques (routier et non routiers) des jeunes. La reconnaissance des inégalités sociales de mobilité et d’accidents corporels peut permettre d’orienter les campagnes de prévention sur l’existence de zones et de groupes à risques / The aim of this thesis is to measure the influence of individual and contextual socioeconomic factors in daily travel, traffic injury incidences and severity of injuries when it comes to young persons of under 25 years of age in France. Original analyses were made using the following databases: the Rhône road trauma Registry, the Lyon Household Travel Survey 2005-2006 (HTS) and an epidemiological case-control survey conducted during the thesis. Except for casualties of motorized two-wheeler crash incidences for the different categories of road users (motorists, cyclists, roller-skate users and pedestrians) were generally higher among the inhabitants of deprived municipalities. Depending on categories of road users huge gender differences were also observed. The effects of socioeconomic factors on injury severity, individual and contextual socioeconomic differences in the use of modes of transport (daily travel), car ownership and access to driver’s license were also studied. The case-control study allows the investigation to focus simultaneously on injuries, daily travel and intermediate-risk factors such as risk behaviors factors of young people. The recognition of social inequalities in daily travel and traffic injuries allow focusing prevention campaigns on the existence of higher risk areas and groups

Le concept du Management de la Mobilité agit dans la perspective d’optimiser l’usage de l’offre alternative de mobilité existante et de la développer en créant les conditions favorables d’un changement de culture et de pratiques en matière de déplacements. Notre contribution à travers cette recherche a pour ambition d’éclaircir les bases de débat sur la pertinence des approches du Management de la Mobilité en les examinant de près. Il s’agit de cerner l’efficacité de ces approches, leur fonctionnement, ainsi que leurs apports et leurs limites.Partant de l'hypothèse que les pistes qui mènent à l'objectif de concrétisation d'une mobilité plus durable afin d'atteindre le « facteur 4 » sont multiples, notre démarche repose sur l'analyse de plusieurs terrains de recherche où on tentera de vérifier la pertinence et l'efficacité de l'approche du Management de la Mobilité à travers deux voies possibles de régulation des mobilités quotidiennes.Une première voie que nous l'appelons la « voie corrective » où Il s'agit d'influencer les choix individuels et même plus, des modes de vie entiers par la mise en route des processus de changement à travers des mesures incitatives. Une deuxième voie indissociable de la première, car elle accroit son efficacité et sa pérennité, est plutôt une « voie intégrative ». Pour explorer cette voie, notre recherche nécessite un travail de nature exploratoire pour déterminer les pré-conditions de réalisation du transfert modal afin d’augmenter le potentiel d'usage et la crédibilité des modes alternatifs. Ceci serait possible par l’anticipation des besoins de la mobilité à travers l’intégration du Management de la Mobilité dans le processus de planification urbaine. / The concept of Mobility Management aims to optimize the use of available and alternative mobility modes by providing and creating optimal conditions for travel patterns change. Our contribution through this research is to provide basis for discussion on the relevance of mobility management approaches by analysing them in depth. The research consists in clarifying the effectiveness of these approaches, the way they are implemented, their benefits and limits.Assuming that the ways to lead to more sustainable mobility and achieve the national target of reduction by a factor of four greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 are various, our strategy is based on the investigation of several research fields where we will attempt to validate the adequacy and the effectiveness of mobility management approaches through two assumed ways of mobility regulation. A first way, that we’ve called the « corrective way », consists in influencing individual travel choices by enacting behaviour change processes and implementing incentives measures. A second way which is inseparable from the first, because it increases its long term efficiency, is rather an « integrative way ». It requires for our research an exploratory method to set out pre-conditions for achieving modal shift and increasing potential use and credibility of alternative modes. This could be possible by anticipating travel demand through an integration of mobility management measures into urban planning process.
