Children´s positions around the picturebook : An etnographic study of boys and girls use of fiction and nonfiction picturebooks at one preschool

Järvung, Kristin January 2018 (has links)

Translation Strategies Used in Translating Tess Gerritsen’s Medical Thrillers: Paulina Kruglinskienė’s translation of the Novel The Surgeon and Jonas Čeponis’ Translation of the Novel Life Support / Tess Gerritsen medicininių trilerių "Chirurgas" ir "Užkratas" vertimų analizė: Paulinos Kruglinskienės ir Jono Čeponio vertimai

Statkutė, Kotryna 02 June 2014 (has links)
The Master Thesis “Translation Strategies Used in Translating Tess Gerritsen’s Medical Thrillers: Paulina Kruglinskienė’s Translation of the Novel The Surgeon and Jonas Čeponis’ Translation of the Novel Life Support” analyses two novels written by Tess Gerritsen (The Surgeon and Life Support) and their Lithuanian translations by Paulina Kruglinskienė and Jonas Čeponis. The following hypothesis was raised: translation by using an equivalent item and low localization strategy are the most popular and useful translation strategies in translating medical terminology. The aim of this paper is to find out what translation strategies are the most popular while translating medical terminology in Paulina Kruglinskienė’s and Jonas Čeponis’ translations of Tess Gerritsen’s medical thrillers. These particular translators were chosen for this analysis due to the following reasons: they are the main translators of Tess Gerritsen’s novels into the Lithuanian language (both have transated six novels each), what is more, they both have medical background as well as long experience in translation. The purpose of this paper is to find out whether Paulina Kruglinskienė and Jonas Čeponis use similar translation strategies while translating medical terms into the Lithuanian language and how these strategies influence the quality of translation. The theoretical part analyses various aspects related with the translation of Tess Gerritsen’s medical thrillers: genre theory, features of thriller...

Edward Thomas coby literární kritik / Edward Thomas as a Critic

Zikmund, Jan January 2021 (has links)
1 Abstract Long overlooked, the poetry of Edward Thomas (1878-1917) has enjoyed wide recognition in the past few decades. The same cannot be said of Thomas's criticism. Though he worked as a literary journalist for almost a decade and a half, critics have mainly focused on the final years of his life when, after the outset of the First World War, he voluntarily enlisted in the Artist's Rifles and began writing poetry. He died in France, at the Battle of Arras. Since his youth, Thomas suffered from depression, possibly made worse by the demands of his profession (some years he reviewed over a hundred books). In contrast, the last stretch of his life seems to have been more fulfilling. Not only did military training prove beneficial for his mental health, but - encouraged by a number of his friends, including Robert Frost and W. H. Hudson - he metamorphosed from overworked hack-writer (as some still refer to him) to outstanding poet. As most of his criticism precedes his poetry, scholars usually look at Thomas's reviews, anthologies, and literary studies to better understand his 144 poems. While it is important to explore the links between his poetry and rest of his work, Thomas's criticism is strong and extensive enough to be considered independently of the poetry. His books and articles may illuminate his...

An ado/aptive reading and writing of Australia and its contemporary literature; The metaphor of an adopted body.

Dunne, Catherine Margaret January 2007 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / Note: This version has been edited to remove names for privacy reasons. For a full copy please contact the author. / Writers of PhDs have a unique, personal and in-depth relationship with their subject-matter, which develops over a number of years. What happens when life intrudes so much into the research and writing that it takes over the subject matter, so that the original struggle for objective scholarship threatens to become subsumed in emotion and self-discovery? How does the supervisor, forced to keep a certain distance from an intimate and tumultuous relationship, still teach? The supervisor can do worse than guide their student towards the genre of Life-Writing, within which a flourishing of sub-genres may be accommodating to such a journey. For a closed-records adoptee caught up in the reunion processes sparked by the 1990 changes to the Adoption Act, critical readings of Peter Carey and Janette Turner Hospital developed into the invention of the Adopted Body, the Subject Adoptee and a new way of seeing: ado/aptive reading and writing. Perhaps in the field of ado/aptive theory, the stolen generations, intercountry adoptees and the white closed-record adoptees of Australia can re-invent themselves, develop their identities and create a genre of academic theory unique to Australia.

Entanglement in Non-inertial Frames

Ostapchuk, David Cecil Murphy January 2008 (has links)
This thesis considers entanglement, an important resource for quantum information processing tasks, while taking into account the theory of relativity. Not only is this a more complete description of quantum information, but it is necessary to fully understand quantum information processing tasks done by systems in arbitrary motion. It is shown that accelerated measurements on the vacuum of a free Dirac spinor field results in an entangled state for an inertial observer. The physical mechanism at work is the Davies-Unruh effect. The entanglement produced increases as a function of the acceleration, reaching maximal entanglement in the asymptotic limit of infinite acceleration. The dynamics of entanglement between two Unruh-DeWitt detectors, one stationary and the other undergoing non-uniform acceleration, was studied numerically. In the ultraweak coupling limit, the entanglement decreases as a function of time for the parameters considered and decreases faster than if the moving detector had had a uniform acceleration.
