A Conductor's Guide to Preparing and Performing Stephen Paulus and Michael Dennis Browne's Oratorio "To Be Certain of the Dawn" (2005)McLean, William Morgan 05 1900 (has links)
The Pulitzer Prize-nominated To Be Certain of the Dawn is an hour-long, polystylistic oratorio written in 2005 by composer Stephen Paulus (1949–2014) with an interfaith libretto by Michael Dennis Browne (b. 1940). The work was commissioned by the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis and was intended to be given as a gift to the Temple Israel - Minneapolis synagogue. The oratorio was written to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps in 1945 as well as the 40th anniversary of the 1965 Vatican document Nostra Aetate. In this study, I examine Paulus and Browne's prolific artistic partnership, situate To Be Certain of the Dawn within their respective catalogs, explore the genesis of the work, and analyze the oratorio's structure, harmony, and libretto. I then utilize this analysis to provide a thorough guide for teaching and preparing this concert-length oratorio. In addition to the analysis, I have created supplemental teaching aids and rehearsal suggestions for preparing this work. With each component of this document, I intend to provide context and resources that assist conductors and organizations who aspire to perform this modern major work.

Luftmakt i humanitära interventioner : en prövning av Wardens teoriWahlström, Oskar January 2018 (has links)
Air power has shown its usefulness throughout many wars and has been an effective tool for military interventions during the last decades. How airpower should be applied has been a highly debated topic for as long as it has been around. However, its use in humanitarian interventions is comparatively unresearched. One theorist that have received a lot of attention is John Warden and his five-ring-model. The purpose of this thesis is to test Wardens theory in humanitarian interventions, in order to contribute with research on the use of airpower in humanitarian interventions. This thesis is a comparative case study examining two similar and successful humanitarian interventions, Operation Deliberate Force and Operation Odyssey Dawn/Unified Protector. Results show that Wardens theory can not explain the success of the use of airpower in the operations. There are however some interesting similarities between the two operations that could be the key to success in humanitarian interventions. Further research is required to investigate this conclusion. /

Previous issue date: 2018-03-19 / The present research aims to investigate the religious motivation behind the adhesion
of the members from Goiás to the Valley of the Dawn, with special emphasis on the
Templo Tarajo do Amanhecer in Terezópolis de Goiás. The hypothesis elaborated presents
the identity traits of the group that revealed in the research: the search for the
sacred as motivation for meaning in the individual’s life within the scenario of late modernity.
In this context of fluid relationships, the quest for and the experience of the
sacred fill the life of the adept with a sense of belonging to a group. The study proposed
here utilized the methodology of participatory observation through bibliographic review
and field research, using quantitative data as a support for qualitative research. The
research demonstrates that the motivation of the Valley of the Dawn members from
Goiás is based on the offer of life meaning made by the doctrine; in the unifying discourse
and in the similarity of the symbols that make the Valley of the Dawn narrative
complement and update the earlier religious narrative of its followers; in the sense of
belonging generated by the execution of ritual works in which the member sees himself
responsible for maintaining his own doctrine.
O estudo aqui proposto utilizou a metodologia
