O mal-estar no trabalho: um estudo sobre suas formas de expressão no contexto do individualismo contemporâneo / Discomfort at work: a study on its expression in the context of contemporary individualismDelphim Soares Nogueira Neto 14 May 2010 (has links)

Studying English Literature at Upper Secondary Schools in Sweden : An empirical study of goals applied to the teaching of English literatureOskarsson, Marie January 2017 (has links)
To use literature in English as a foreign language (EFL) or English as a second language (ESL) classroom is something which, for many decades was regarded as too difficult or not relevant in many countries, Sweden being one of them. In the past few decades the view of literature as a means for education in Sweden has changed. Research shows that texts are useful to enhance critical thinking skills and to help foster democratic citizens, which is something the Swedish curriculum for upper secondary school advocates for. This study sought to examine what goals teachers apply to the teaching of literature and also how these goals were realized in the classroom and, reasons to why it what not realized if that was the case. The study was conducted using an online questionnaire, Google Forms, which was sent out to an upper secondary school in Sweden and posted on a Facebook page devoted to English teachers at upper secondary schools in Sweden. The results of the study showed that most of the goals stated in this study were realized to some extent in the EFL classrooms, but there were also discrepancies between teachers views on what is important to teach and what the curriculum states should be taught. An example of this was that some teachers did not teach the goal of text analysis, it was not found to be ‘interesting’ or ‘relevant’. However, the curriculum for English at upper secondary schools in Sweden, does not advocate that teachers should teach text analysis specifically. On the other hand, the curriculum does advocate that students should meet different forms of text. This study, therefore, also discusses possible ambiguities within the curriculum of English at upper secondary school.

Empowerment : a multi-level processEylon, Dafna 11 1900 (has links)
The term "empowerment" is frequently used by organizational researchers, management practitioners, and consultants. However, despite the popularity of the term, there is a lack of empirical work and no generally accepted definition. As part of a thorough multi-disciplinary literature review, fourteen different conceptualizations for the term empowerment were discovered and classified into four categories: Micro (intra-psychic), Meso (relational-interactive), Macro (structural), and Misnomer (bogus). As a result of this work, both a new definition and a multi-level process model of empowerment are offered. Empowerment is defined here as an enhancing and energizing context specific process that expands an individual's power and feelings of trust, is usually facilitated by another, and results in increased levels of self-esteem, self-efficacy and other characteristics related to personal growth and control, which eventually lead to outcomes such as performance and satisfaction. The proposed multi-level process model postulates that the process of empowerment is driven by changes in information, responsibility, and active belief, and mediated by intra-psychic factors. This model was empirically tested in a between-subject, pre-test, post-test simulation design. Over a period of three weeks 135 graduate students completed a novel application of in-basket exercises, within which an empowerment manipulation was embedded. This manipulation included increasing information, responsibility, and active belief for the empowered manipulation and decreasing these three components for the disempowered manipulation. Multivariate analysis of variance revealed that, as predicted, the manipulation had a significant impact on the three mediating intra-psychic factors (self-efficacy, self-esteem, and locus of control) and an analysis of variance found significant results in the predicted direction on the dependent variable of job satisfaction. Regression analyses revealed the predicted mediation relationship between the intra-psychic variables and the dependent variable of job satisfaction. However, none of the analyses yielded significant results for the performance measures (initiative, sensitivity, planning and organizing, delegation, administrative control, problem analysis, judgement, and decisiveness). Several potential explanations are offered for these results, including a motivational interpretation which focuses on participant's motivation directionality. Theoretical and practical implications for these results are discussed as well as directions for future research. / Business, Sauder School of / Graduate

Prolegomena k pojmu sebeuskutečnění. Aktualizace Hegelova a Marxova motivu zrušení práce / Prolegomena to the notion of self-realization: Updating the idea of the abolition of labor following Hegelian and Marxian philosophyHerden, Paul January 2021 (has links)
This thesis forms, in the first instance, a critical examination of labor in relation to the notion of self-realization following Hegelian and Marxian philosophy and their theories of action. In the second instance, it is a preliminary study of the concept of fomo (fear of missing out), which will be explored in more detail in the PhD based on the MA. In the first section, a critique of Andreas Reckwitz's and Hartmut Rosa's notions of self-realization is used to present the common view and contemporary engagements with said notion as relevant but insufficient. Both authors act as a proxy for a deficiency that turns out to be an all too great distance from metaphysical and historical-materialist positions and considerations regarding such notion as that of self-realization. Thus, in the main part, not only an attempt is made, by means of a renaissance of Hegelian and Marxian reflections on the concept of self-realization, to plausibilize and remedy this deficiency; moreover, by virtue of a detailed exegesis of their theories of action and examination of their categories, it is pointed out, above all, that Hegelian and Marxian philosophy intends the complete abolition of self-preservation (d. i. alienated and natural labor) and elevation into self-realization, even if both thinkers use the...

A Thirst for MoreKauppi, Erika Donnelly 13 March 2014 (has links)
A Thirst for Moretakes the reader on a journey into self-development culture around Portland, Oregon. The author attends events devoted to personal growth to try to understand how this culture shapes our lives and the way we think. Along the way, she encounters psychics, mystics, an alleged cult leader, and seekers and self-reinventors of all stripes. As participants in this culture work to build their own philosophies and define their own spirituality, they also create their own communities--intentionally and otherwise. These communities form the heart of this exploration. Chapters 1 and 2 explore the spontaneous communities that arise during afternoon events in which participants pay for goods, services, and information pertaining to personal growth and spirituality. Chapter 3 delves into a sacred art and music festival in which participants gather outdoors for a handful of days in the hopes of connecting with each other and transforming themselves--and society--in the process. The final chapters explore the lives of two communities. In Chapter 4, a woman devotes her life to starting up an eco-village in the foothills of Mt. Hood. In Chapter 5, the author visits a 41-year-old commune in which residents and visitors have abandoned former lives in their search for meaning, fulfillment, belonging, and a place to call home.
As the author questions others about their beliefs, she begins to question her own. Why do we believe what we believe?
