This thesis seeks to explore the points of dissonance and resonance around the understanding and deployment of the term 'religion' between Human Rights Watch, and the government of the People's Republic of China. In doing this, it is highlighted that a fundamental disjunction exists in the meaning of, and the boundaries of, the word 'religion' between these two groups. The space that this difference creates makes discussions on religion and religious freedom between these two groups extremely problematic, primarily because Human Rights Watch seeks to protect the right to religious freedom of groups and individuals that the Chinese government does not consider ‘religion’, but that Human Rights Watch demands they should. This thesis addresses the question of the role of social and cultural relativism in the defining, and the subsequent role in defending, of the term and contents of 'religion'.

Definitioner av religion i Religionskunskap : En kritisk studie om framställningen av olika definitioner av religion i läromedel / Definitions of religion in religious education : A critical study on the presentation of different definitions of religion in school textbooks

Ansvaret för val av läromedel som ska användas i Religionskunskap är fördelat till varje enskild skola. Som en följd av detta används olika läromedel i det svenska skolsystemet i vilket olika definitioner av religion presenteras. Följaktligen har studien undersökt hur läromedel i Religionskunskap framställer och diskuterar definitioner av religion. Studien har även undersökt hur man kan använda olika definitioner av religion i undervisningen och hur studiens resultat påverkar den ämnesdidaktiska diskussionen. Studien granskar åtta läromedel. Studien analyserar resultatet utifrån Skolinspektionens kritik gällande läromedels framställning av olika definitioner av religion. Resultatet visar tendentiösa inslag, ett fokus på kunskap och reflektion samt tillkortakommanden mot styrdokumenten. Av tidigare nämnda skäl blir lärare ansvarig att komplettera och belysa problematiken för elever vilket diskuteras genom möjliga ämnesdidaktiska undervisningsstrategier och teorier.Sökord:

The work is focused on delimiting the basic problematic of definition of religion in terms of Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotics. Its objective is througt selected Peirce's texts to interpret Peirce's philosophy of religion, which consists of concept of religion closely connected with Peirce's metaphysics, phaneroscopy, semiotics and agapism. It focuses primarily on Peirce's theory of evolution, the idea of God, the pragmatic way of inference through which one can come to the idea of God, and the relationship between religion and science. I conclude through the interpretation of Ch. S. Peirce's texts that the precise definition of religion can not be pursued in his theory. Even so, the semiotic conception of religion brings a new perspective: the religion could be based on the same principles that govern the science. It can also be understood as a community of people continually striving for truth. This community of people searches in its investigation for answers to the questions about theological ideals. The precondition of faith of individual members of religious communities is an experience of God, who is a perfect and the most general sign and together growth and semiosis in the universe, which people interpret. Frimurarna och religionen : En religionssociologisk studie av Svenska Frimurare Ordens plats i det samtida religiösa landskapet

The aim of this study is to situate the locus of the Swedish branch of freemasonry, Svenska Frimurare Orden, in the contemporary religious landscape. The research questions are as follows: On what grounds can the Swedish branch of freemasonry be considered religious? If the Swedish branch of freemasonry is considered religious, how does it fit into the contemporary society among the plethora of new religious movements? In regard to the first question, a definition of religion is required, thus Bruce Lincoln’s theory with four domains of religion is used to decide to what extent the Swedish branch of freemasonry can be described as a religion or a religious movement. To be able to answer the second research question the four sociological narratives as presented by Meredith B. McGuire are used to analyze the results of our study.   The results are reached through examination of the common laws of the Swedish branch of freemasonry and the data found on their official website, combined with hermeneutic interpretation. Our conclusion is that the Swedish branch of freemasonry through its explicit connection to Christianity, in addition to its esoteric and occult practices both fits into a historical continuity regarding religion in Sweden, as well as with contemporary societal currents regarding new religious movements.
