The purpose of this study was to determine the influence discipline has on teaching at public schools. In chapter 2 of the literature study, the researcher focused on aspects that influence discipline at school. In chapter 3, she also looked at education law aspects that have a direct influence on education. Two structured questionnaires were used in the quantitative research. These questionnaires were distributed separately between educators and learners at nine schools of the Free State Department of Education's Fezile Dabi District. From the findings of this study, it is clear that discipline indeed has an enormous influence on teaching at public schools. The Constitution (1996) and Schools Act (84/1996) make the application of effective discipline at schools possible. / Thesis (M.Ed. A model to improve the implementation of portfolio assessment / Matsiliso Mary Tlokotsi

In South African classrooms a strong emphasis is placed on assessing learners by means of portfolios. Through the utilisation of portfolios it is envisaged that learner growth and development should be enhanced in order for learners to become expert learners who are strategic, self-regulated and self-reflecting. This study aimed to determine how effective the implementation of portfolio assessment presently is, and if necessary, to develop a model that could improve the implementation of portfolio assessment in the Senior Phase, Grade 9 in particular. By means of explanatory mixed method research through the completion of questionnaires by 369 learners and 88 educators, and focus group interviews conducted with 36 of the 88 educators from the Sedibeng West District, disconcerting results were revealed. It appeared that educators are not equipped with adequate knowledge and skills to implement portfolio assessment in order to enhance learner growth and development. Based on the disturbing findings, a model was designed to highlight the processes and components involved in the successful implementation of portfolio assessment. As no evidence of any other model to improve the implementation of portfolio assessment at school level could be located, the contribution of this study lies in the development of a tool that could be utilized by the Department of Education to train educators to become effective implementers of portfolio assessment. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Education))--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2009.

A Planning Analysis of Utah Lake to Determine its Recreational Potential

Utah Lake, located near Provo, Utah, is a lake of relatively low recreational development. There are certain inherent conditions that contribute to this situation. Four of them are, water level fluctuation, pollution, turbidity and the close proximity of other recreation sites of possible high desirability. This thesis explores these four problems and offers solutions and recommendations to solve or otherwise control their effect on recreation at Utah Lake. The water level fluctuation will be under greater control after the Central Utah Project completes certain alterations in the lake and its watershed. Some fluctuation will continue but by proper design of facilities, the effect will be minimal. The pollution situation is much improved now that the Water Pollution Control Act has stopped the flow of raw sewage to the lake. Turbidity is caused by the wind action on the surface of this shallow lake and may be an insoluble problem. However, by altering the bottom situation of the lake, the effect of this problem can be lessened. Other recreation sites are readily available to the residents of Utah Valley. However, Utah Lake offers some opportunities of its own that are not found elsewhere at these nearby mountain sites. By providing facilities to capitalize of the lake's major attractions, namely, boating, fishing, and hunting, the major effect of these other recreation sites on Utah Lake will be slight. Certain shoreline locations provide definite potential for specific types of recreational developments. If these sites are carefully planned and properly designed, the existing problems can be lessened and the recreational potential at Utah Lake greatly increased.

Boy or Girl? – No, it´s a Child! : Parents´ Motives to Sex Determine their Unborn Children

The aim of this magister thesis is to examine the motives behind parents´ choice to sex determine their children, or not, at routine ultrasound examination (RUL). The analysed empirical data consists of 261 responding questionnaires written by expecting parents. My conclusions are that the motives behind parents’ choice can reflect their view of sex as binary or analog. Many parents sex determine their unborn children in order for preparing their rooms, clothes and toys to correlate with the heterosexual matrix. Girls get pink and boys blue, but the colours are of course only the visible part of how children are sexed as social construction. Some parents are experiencing a peer pressure and quite a few parents are influenced by the midwife performing the RUL to chose to sex determine their child. The most common motive to abstain from sex determining the child at RUL is after all to make gender the big happening at birth. Parents prepare to raise – not a child – but a boy or girl.

A Rapid and Specific Gas Chromatographic Analysis for Cysteine-S-Sulfonate to Determine the Distribution of Sulfite in Mammalian Plasma

It has been shown in previous studies that when sulfite is absorbed by rabbits via either inhalation of SO2 or oral exposure to sulfite, the hydrated form, bisulfite, interacts with plasma disulfides where it is suspected to be in the form, cysteine-S-sulfonate. A rapid and specific gas chromatographic analysis procedure for cysteine-S-sulfonate has been developed to better study the distribution of sulfite in biological systems. Sulfonated proteins are enzymatically hydrolyzed to ensure stability of the acid labile S-sulfonate disulfide. The hydrolysate is then applied to a 6 cm cation-exchange column and eluted with 0.1 N HCl which elutes the acidic cysteine-S-sulfonate with the void volume of the column leaving behind any remaining cysteine. the silylated derivatives of the column effluent are prepared using Tri-Sil/BSA. These derivatives are injected into a gas chromatograph equipped with a flame-photometric detector operating in the sulfur mode, 2% 0v-101 on Chromosorb W/HP 1/4 inch glass column, oven temperture 140°C, and carrier flow rate of 86 ml/min. The presence of cysteine-S-sulfonat in the sulfite treated rabbits had been directly determined by the described method.

An Experiment to Determine the Effectiveness of a Remedial Reading Program with Students at Utah State University

The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of 20 hours of remedial reading instruction as compared with 20 hours of vocabulary instruction on a select group of university freshmen in the Remedial English Program. Three measures of effectiveness used were comprehension, rate, and effective reading rate. The effective reading rate was determined by computing the arithmetic product of level of comprehension and rate of reading. The results indicated that for this particular population, using the materials and instructional techniques described, neither group increased reading rate at the .01 level of significance. The effective reading rate of the reading group increased significantly at the .05 level.
