Making sense of no body

Wood, Becca January 2010 (has links)
This Masters in Art and Design investigates a performance strategy for the deterritorialization of the body, mind and space as they intersect the digital screen image. The reconfiguration of the sensing system as the body encounters the digital image deterritorializes the body’s everyday modes of proprioception and spatial orientation. The assumption here is the increasing 'instability' of the body in a contemporary world where the digital screen image mediates and renegotiates our physical encounters. In prioritizing the body in these screen environments, there is potential for rethinking a body politic for performance and somatic practice. My strategy is to reconfigure the multi-modal processing where the screen dominates the visual faculties in the mind/body/screen relationship. Using wireless cameras attached to the body and improvisational structures for performance, divergent spaces are connected and collected through the body, screen and the camera. As the body and screen intersect, the corporeal and the image converge and manifest through the imagination and screen. This investigation into the screen/body opens up new possibilities for the spatial and corporeal, as the body and the screen fold into a mesh of multiplicity and 'in-between-ness'.

A poesia desterritorializante de Néstor Perlongher: uma leitura de Hule / The deterritorializing poetry of Néstor Perlongher: a reading of Hule

Ferro, Gabriela Beatriz Moura 21 October 2010 (has links)
This research concentrates on the analysis of the relation between desire and language presented in the book of poems Hule (1989) by the Argentinean Néstor Perlongher. Based on the concept of deterritorialization, we aimed at observing such relations by the study of three themes in the work of this writer: territoriality, identity and desire. In particular, we studied the intercession of this subject and of some procedures of poetic experimentation from Neobarroque esthetics, used by the writer; among them, we mention the use of poems with hybrid vocabulary, in which we can find not only a mixture of archaic but also highly refined words from a vulgar lexicon, such as slang and varied jargon. The mixture of languages are also part of these procedure, there is the use of interlanguage which is created by the contact of speakers of Portuguese and Spanish, known as \"portunhol\".

Narrating a Diasporic Identity: Language, Migrancy, and Ethnicity in Shirley Geok-lin Lim's Monsoon History

Li, Yi-feng 06 July 2004 (has links)
Abstract This thesis sets out to explore Shirley Geok-lin Lim's poetry collection Monsoon History in terms of three aspects: language, migrancy, and ethnicity. It also attempts to examine Shirley Lim's diasporic identity by embracing the border thinking. The notion of border-crossing, either physically or psychologically, passes through each chapter to represent the poet's identity and to re-create a space for herself to articulate. It is a study of Lim's exile experiences and how she establishes the poetics of diaspora for Asian American literature. In the introduction, the concept of diaspora and the theoretical framework will be explicated. The first chapter probes into the relationship between Shirley Lim and her choice of language in writing. I adopt Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's analysis of language and definition of ¡§minor literature¡¨ to discuss the deterritorialization of Lim's writing. The second chapter traces Lim's migrant status, in which I resort to Edward Said's ¡§Reflections on Exile¡¨ and his different categorizations of exile. The third chapter, appealing to several theorists or critics, such as Benedict Anderson, Ernest Gellner, and Ling-chi Wang, deals with Lim's problem of ethnic identity displayed in her poetry. The last chapter concludes with an overall argumentation that the destination and dissolution of Lim's identity is an Asian American because of reterritorialization of language, migrancy, and ethnicity.

Making The

Alptekin, Ali Haydar 01 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aims to analyze the role of railways and railway stations in the construction of the capital city of an industrial empire with reference to the concept of &ldquo / territorialization.&rdquo / The main case is Russia, where the geographical factors are prominent in the creation of the economic, political, social and cultural structure of the country / and the focus of analysis is the city of Moscow, which acted as the center of this structure as connected to its territory by a developed system of railways. The continuous processes of &ldquo / territorialization&rdquo / , &ldquo / deterritorialization&rdquo / and &ldquo / reterritorialization&rdquo / of the Eurasian continent by Russians and the associated nations form the basic spatial backstage of this study. The built environment as basically materialized in the capital city, which serves as the control center of territoriality, and the way how human territoriality in the country and within the capital city are interrelated, are the key issues to be investigated. In this context railways emerged as new media for territorialization in the age of industry. In this study the Russian railways and the Moscow railway stations are analyzed in their positions in the territorial configuration of industrial Russia form the mid-nineteenth century onwards. Moscow as a leading industrial as well as historical and cultural center, was not the capital city when the country introduced the rapid construction of railway network and station buildings. In this study it is claimed that the rise of Moscow to become the capital city is, thus, related with its becoming the center of the Russian railway network.

Impacto de la desterritorialización de la comunidad shipibo-konibo en la transformación del lenguaje visual del kené / Impact of the deterritorialization of the shipibo-konibo community on the transformation of the visual language of kené

Marreros Flores, Elisabet 27 November 2019 (has links)
This research focuses on analyzing the influence of the phenomenon of deterritorialization the Shipibo-Konibo indigenous community in the transformation of the visual language of kené, a cultural manifestation that encompasses its worldview, beliefs and culture. It is based on the hypothesis that the loss of the territory and the subsequent establishment of the community in Cantagallo affect the practice of drawing kené, both in the transformation of the graphic values of its visual language, and in the emergence of new meanings. The research is designed based on a methodology of documentary work in articulation with field work to deepen both a bibliographic and content analysis referred to the research variables, as in the current production and marketing contexts of kené. The main results indicate that the transformation of kené patterns focuses on the change of the linear structure of the pattern, on the incorporation of figurative visual elements in the composition, on the transformation of the chromatic palette towards multiple saturated tones and in the changes of the meanings of kené that adapt to the new development context. Therefore it is concluded that the transformation of the visual language of kené reflects the tensions between the phenomena of deterritorialization and reterritorialization, because although an almost exclusive orientation to the commercialization of the pieces arises, the need of the community to reinforce its identity with the patterns of kené remains. / Trabajo de investigación

"Landskapet rundt meg lever to liv" : En ekokritisk läsning av plats och natur i Maja Lundes klimatkvartett / "The landscape around me is living two lives" : An ecocritical reading of place and nature in Maja Lunde's climate quartet

Smout, Katrijn January 2023 (has links)
What happens to man’s place when non-human nature – man’s environment – is under threat? Norwegian author Maja Lunde explores this in the four novels that make up the “climate quartet,” Bienes historie (2015), Blå (2017), Przewalskis hest (2019) and Drømmen om et tre (2022), in which she discusses various climate issues. This master’s thesis investigates how Lunde establishes the significance of place and the meaning of nature as a place in her climate quartet, with an emphasis on the dystopian portrayal of place and the relationship between the human and the non-human. The analysis employs a thematic close reading approach, using ecocriticism as a general theoretical framework. In particular, the works of scholars Ursula K. Heise, Doreen Massey, and Antonia Mehnert on the meaning of place contribute to this study’s analytical framework, which includes concepts such as sense of place, de- and reterritorialization, riskscape, non-places, the global and the local. The study also draws on Sigmund Freud’s and Martin Heidegger’s concepts of the Uncanny. The thesis shows that in Lunde’s climate fiction, place is a prominent actor because it threatens the characters' existence and can be perceived as a catalyst for the stories’ events. The characters’ identity as nomads who traverse the world as a global riskscape is a key theme. The fictional world is characterized by emptiness, which can be perceived as a result of deterritorialization. The emptiness in some places leads to the concept of the Uncanny in both the dystopian future perspective, where the climate-changed world is depicted as an uncanny place, and in the past and present perspectives, where nature is often depicted as an uncanny quasi-object. The characters’ awareness of nature as an ambivalence is particularly significant. The analysis of Lunde’s use of place and the meaning of nature as a place provides a nuanced exploration of the complex relationship between humans and their environment.

Unmournable Bodies: Gothic Postcolonialism and The Spectre of Loss in Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things and Anuradha Roy's Sleeping on Jupiter

Kannan, Sitara 01 January 2019 (has links)
"My thesis compares Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things and Anuradha Roy’s Sleeping on Jupiter in order to demonstrate how a) each text is a product of its moment and a reflection of corresponding critical thought and b) how an inversion of gothic tropes in Sleeping reflects a changed world dynamic, a melancholic exploration of epistemological and traumatic loss that can be seen not only as a recognition of the continued power of oppressive systems but a reflection on the failure of cosmopolitanism to “rescue” the global subject from her own isolation and recolonization. I claim that this is not only demonstrated by a change in form and how gothic tropes are presented, but in how homosexuality and deviant sexuality in particular is treated, a reminder that even in texts that attempt to condemn and reject colonizing tendencies, the political moment and its theoretical appendages continue to haunt postcolonial discourse, enabling recolonization and restratifying spaces of resistance. I claim that this recognition need not be totalizing or nihilistic, but that in the recognition itself lies the possibility for resistance, an act of rebellion that must be constantly re-enacted in order to deterritorialize what has been captured and displaced, a fluid and imaginative negotiation that, much like literature, is limitless in interpretation and offers readers constant and multiplicitous possibilities for agency in the face of equally fluid oppressive systems."--Provided by the author.

The aspects related to deterritorialization and depersonalization of the central character of the novels will be addressed. Our objective is to propose a study, based on the works cited, taking contemporary critical theories as a critical analysis approach, considering the changes in aesthetic practice and the consequent rupture with the notion of art as a representation of reality. It is proposed as a methodological foundation, the bibliographical research with a view to approaching the cartographic tracings that contemplate the procedural events during the research. Thus, we will use the ideas of Deleuze and Guattari and Michel Maffesoli, with reference in deterritorialization and nomadism. Still from this perspective, other contributions like those of Walter Bejamin on the "loss of the aura"; Jean Baudrillard, in Simulacros and Simulation; Guy Debord, Scocius of the Spectacle; Jean-François Lyotard, The Postmodern Condition; Zigmund Bauman, the notion of Net Modernity, among others.
