O transnacional e o local nas revistas Reader\'s Digest e Seleções: relações de gênero nos Estados Unidos e no Brasil (1939-1971) / The transnational and the local on Reader\'s Digest and Seleções: gender relations in The United States and in Brazil

Fonseca, Renan Reis 08 February 2019 (has links)
This thesis analyzes two variety magazines, the North American Reader\'s Digest and the Brazilian Seleções do Reader\'s Digest, among the years of 1939 and 1971. Both magazines were based on the selection and condensed reproduction of articles published in other printed periodicals. The publications make up important sources of research for the perception of transnational elements between the two countries, that is, what was chosen as possible to be reproduced in each of the nations, circulating themes in different ways, depending mainly on local contexts. The purpose of the analysis focuses on the gender relations and representations that circulated between the United States and Brazil, focusing on the way women are presented and mobilized in different situations, paying attention to the way in which the magazines, taking into account local perspectives, were able to dialogue and propose specific roles in different social and political contexts. The research also seeks to understand the diffusion of a discourse based on the understanding of a \"universal middle class\", considering the way these magazines presented topics for instance family, birth control and political participation as guiding elements to achieve such propagation. Finally, it intends to point out how subalternized groups and of contestation, such as the movements for Civil Rights and women, were negatively presented in the pages of the periodicals, while they reinforced types considered behavioral by their editors.

Effects of isolation methods on proliferation and GD2 expression by porcine umbilical cords stem cells

Walker, Kristen Elizabeth January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Animal Sciences and Industry / Duane L. Davis / Cell isolation method may have effects on the characteristics of the cells isolated from porcine umbilical cords. As stem cells age or approach senescence, it is hypothesized that their properties change. We expect that isolation method and age of cells will have effects on the phenotype of porcine umbilical cord (PUC) cells during in vitro expansion. We investigated the effects of three isolation methods on PUC population doublings, ability to produce colony forming units (CFU), and amount of ganglioside GD2 (GD2) expression over eleven passages. Isolation methods were explant (Exp) in which the Wharton's Jelly was removed from cords, minced and plated, enzyme digest (Dig), and stomacher assisted enzyme digestion (Stom). Cell isolates were analyzed for GD2 expression, CFU, and population doublings at early (3), middle (7), and late (11) passage. The Exp method produced greater (P<0.05) population doublings and more (P<0.05) CFU at passage 7. Explant isolates also were numerically more likely to survive to passage 11 (9/9 isolates vs 5/9 for Dig and 7/9 for Stom). In contrast, the percent cells expressing GD2 was greater (P<0.05) for Stom isolates than Exp isolates at passage 11. There were no trends for increased passage number to decreased population doubling, CFU formation, or percent GD2 positive cells. In summary, our results indicate that the Exp isolation method produced the greatest number of population doublings over 11 passages and there were minimal effects of isolation method on CFU and GD2 expression. Although Exp may be more difficult to scale up to isolate all of the PUCs in a cord, it provided greater in vitro expansion than the enzyme methods in our experiment and may provide the most cells for biotechnological and biomedical applications.

Fuzzy Fingerprinting

Strobel, Cornelia 03 February 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Fingerprints play an important role in biometrics and cryptography. Their creation might be based on one-way hash functions, which should usually also be collision-resistant. But users tend to draw less attention at those fingerprints - so an attacker might hand out a similar fingerprint in order to spoof identity. The main ideas for creating such 'fuzzy fingerprints' and the creation algorithm itself are discussed in this lecture. The demonstration of the tool, that produces fuzzy fingerprints shows the practical background of this technique.

Secure Access for Public Clients to Web API:s with Minimum Performance Loss / Säker åtkomst för publika klienter mot Web API:er med minimal prestandaförlust

Maan, Narbir Singh, Hanchi, Hamza January 2014 (has links)
A lot of information nowadays is made available through Web APIs on the Internet and without security and encryption; it is very easy for malicious users to access confidential information. The goal was to find out what different mechanisms that are available for providing a safe communication with a web API from web clients and mobile applications with little as possible impact on the performance. Learning, implementing and maintaining the mechanisms are also im- portant aspects looked at in the evaluation. Many mechanisms are available for use to secure the communication but not all are suitable for public clients. The suitable mechanisms are Digest authentication and OAuth 2.0. The chosen mechanisms were developed, tested and evaluated in regard to safety, performance impact and usabil- ity from a company perspective. The authentication and authorization mechanism, which was the most suitable, was OAuth 2.0as it has least impact on performance and better security features than the other mechanisms.

Between bedroom and courtroom : legal and literary perspectives on slaves and the freed in Augustus' adultery legislation

Bratton, Amy Eleanor January 2017 (has links)
This thesis offers an investigation into the roles of slaves and freedmen and the extent of their involvement in the Romans’ legal and literary discourse on adultery and the legislation introduced to address it – the lex Iulia de adulteriis coercendis. It also seeks to assert their place more firmly within the context of the Roman familia and explore what this means in the context of the adultery statute. This thesis reasserts the position of slaves and freedmen within the Roman familia as a whole and, more specifically, as individuals deserving and requiring of consideration within the context of the analysis of the adultery statute and other social legislation. A multi-disciplinary approach has been adopted in this thesis to address the multiple avenues apparent in the investigation. A detailed analysis of the primary extant source of the statute, found in Justinian’s Digest, was carried out to determine the extent of the inclusion of the servile and freed in adulterous relationships and how much consideration was shown to them by the legal writers, or jurists. As a corollary to this analysis, a range of literary works, from Ovid, the Elder Seneca, Quintilian, Tacitus and Suetonius, was examined to provide a counterpoint to the legal perspective on the inclusion of slaves and freedmen within adulterous relationships, and, subsequently, the familia. Re-assessing the roles of slaves and freedmen within adulterous relationships and the legislation aimed at controlling this crime also necessitates another reassessment – namely, that of the motivations behind the introduction of the statute itself. Notoriously difficult to determine, this thesis posits, in conclusion, that, rather than being an instrument of the moral indignation of the contemporary Roman population, the adultery legislation was instituted as an instrument of economic control to counter the potential dilution of the wealth of the elite of Rome by illegitimate children. Slaves and freedmen were, then, a crucial element of a deceptively complex piece of legislation typically assumed to affect and address members of the Roman elite only.

No. of bitstreams: 1 2010 - Fernanda Peixoto Giori.pdf: 2362278 bytes, checksum: a15d423533272c981b15d7f22b714be1 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-02-23 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior-CAPES / Brazil was adverted by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a sub-clinical area of serious vitamin A deficiency. Thus, the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA) is selecting and improving varieties of sweet potatoes with higher levels of Beta-carotene, pro-vitamin A. The carotenoids provitamin A amount of in foods does not necessarily correspond the amount that is absorbed and metabolized by the body. For a better determination of these values and knowledge of the mechanisms of its transport and absorption, it is necessary to understand the factors that lead to the food matrix release, until the absorption and the influence on the promotion and maintenance in human health. In order to perform preliminary studies of its absorption, this study aims to determine the efficiency of micellization of Beta -carotene in orange sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas, Lam), by applying a in vitro digestion as a tool for determining the bioaccessibility, which is the first step for bioavailability determination. This approach aims to simulate the oral, gastric and intestinal stages of human. The digestion was performed with 10 g of fresh samples, homozeneided with 5% (w/w) of canola oil. The extraction was performed with acetone and petroleum ether and the micellar fraction with petroleum ether, NaCl 10% (w / v) and NaSO4 2% (w/v) and involves the use of enzymes as -amylase , pepsin, bile, pancreatin, lipase and mucin, and inorganic compounds such as KCl, KSCN, NaH2PO4, Na3PO4, NaOH, NaCl, CaCl2, HCl, NaHCO3. The physiological variations are reproduced by the heating bath shaker with orbital gyrus (37?C) and centrifugation (5000g, 45 min). Quantification and determination of the profile of carotenoids were performed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with YCM ? C30 Carotenoid S-3 4.6 x 250mm column. Quantification of total carotenoids was performed by UV-VIs. The whole procedure was performed under controlled temperature (25 ? C) and light. The Beta -carotene was present mainly with levels of 86%, 73% and 82% for access 1, 2 and 3 and after digestion, the profile of Beta -carotene has set levels of 96%, 89% and 100%, respectively. The efficiency of micellization was 23.8%, 28% and 25% for 1.2 and 3 hits, indicating Beta -carotene transfer of the food matrix to micelles, corresponding to bioaccessibility of the compound. This methodology proved to be faster and cheaper, since the in vivo studies are costly, complex and require more time.
