Linking the past to the future : an exploration of the educational experiences of children who have lived with domestic abuse

Chestnutt, Sarah Jayne January 2018 (has links)
Almost one quarter of children, by the time they reach 18 years old, will have experienced domestic violence (DV) at some point in their childhood (Bentley et al., 2017). The impact of DV on children can affect the areas of emotional and social development, communication, physical health and learning, in the home and school environments. Rather than being passive witnesses to abuse, children experience it through all of their senses. Despite a wealth of research exploring the areas of DV and the impact on children, there is limited current research in the area of DV in relation to children in education, and teacher perspectives of DV. This research therefore aims to add to the body of literature by exploring the educational experiences of children who have lived with domestic abuse and the views of teachers supporting those children. There were two phases to the research. Phase one involved working with children to explore their views of education and what was important to them, using image-based data collection methods. Phase two explored teacher perspectives of the effects of DV on children and a discussion about the implications of phase one, using a soft systems methodology approach. A visual arts-based methodology was utilised in order to allow children to explore and share their thoughts and feelings in a creative way; to tell their stories, take ownership over their own information and feel empowered to do so through a method of their choosing. The data was analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. The findings illustrated that children’s experiences of school were centred on six key areas: play, education, identity, relationships, feeling safe and linking the past to the future. Teachers in the study expressed an understanding of DV and the impact on children and families. They described what children think about school and what children need at school. However, there were many barriers and conflicts for teachers in providing such support, and they felt disempowered to enact positive change for those children. Visual methodology allowed for children to express their views in a way that linked the past with the future that helped them navigate the present situation. The implications for educational psychology practice were explored at various levels of working. In particular, with relation to eliciting child voice, supporting schools at a systems level and promoting organisational change.

Understanding How Domestic Abuse Is Associated With Greater Depressive Symptoms in a Community Sample of Female Primary Care Patients: Does Loss of Belongingness Matter?

Chang, Edward C., Kahle, Emma R., Hirsch, Jameson K. 01 June 2015 (has links)
This study examined the relationship between domestic abuse, belongingness, and depressive symptoms in a community sample of 71 female primary care patients. As expected, domestic abuse was associated with greater depressive symptoms. Results from conducting mediation analyses, including bootstrapping techniques, provided strong convergent support for a model in which the hypothesized effect of domestic abuse on depressive symptoms in women is mediated by a loss of belongingness. Noteworthy, even after controlling for content overlap between measures of belongingness and depressive symptoms, the mediation model remained significant. Some implications of the present findings are discussed.

Understanding the Relationship Between Domestic Abuse and Suicide Behavior in Adults Receiving Primary Care: Does Forgiveness Matter?

Chang, Edward C., Kahle, Emma R., Yu, Elizabeth A., Hirsch, Jameson K. 01 October 2014 (has links)
This study examined the interrelation of domestic abuse, forgiveness of self, forgiveness of others, and suicide behavior in a community sample of 101 patients receiving primary care from a clinic in the southeastern United States. As expected, it was found that more frequent experience of domestic abuse was associated with more frequent suicide behavior. Results from conducting mediation analyses and using bootstrapping techniques provided support for a model in which the relationship between domestic abuse and suicide behavior was accounted for by forgiveness of self, but not by forgiveness of others. The article concludes with a discussion of some of the implications of the present findings for practice and the study's limitations.

Intimate Partner Violence and Domestic Violence within Same-Sex Relationships

Martin, Lee January 2020 (has links)
This thesis seeks to analyze the issue of intimate partner violence (IPV) within female same-sex relationships in order to uncover how/if it can be related to an invisibility of female same-sex relationships in society at large. By analyzing various articles and academic texts dealing with IPV in both heterosexual and homosexual relationships, the hope is to establish some core differences and similarities within the field of IPV research. The analysis will also look at how the notion of the violent female is addressed, and how other characteristics such as race, ethnicity, age and ableness compound in the narratives of IPV in female same-sex relationships. The analysis will be carried out with the use of domestic violence theory through an ecological model which allows all environments an individual inhabits to be analyzed. Intersectionality alongside a post-colonial and queerfeminist approach will also be applied in the qualitative text analysis of the material. Numerous methods and explanations are put forward in the literature in order to explain IPV, in hetero and homo relationships. Lacking in the discussion is the image of the female abuser while also missing discussions on other intersecting identity markers.

Trauma, Gendered Violence and Coping-mechanisms in Colleen Hoover’s It Ends With Us

Rundqvist, Jonna January 2020 (has links)
This essay analyses the representation of trauma and gendered violence in Colleen Hoover’s novel It Ends With Us. To do this, trauma theory and the notion of gendered violence are applied in the analysis, as well as Dorrit Cohn’s ideas of diary novels, dissonant narrator and consonant narrator. The findings show that the protagonist, Lily’s, way of coping with her trauma and gendered violence during her teenage years, was to keep a diary, effectively using scriptotherapy. When that was not enough, however, she actively suppressed her problems. The essay also shows that Cohn’s ideas of dissonant and consonant narrator play a part in how Lily’s development is shown throughout the novel.

Våld mot kvinnor i nära relationer - hinder och möjligheter för vårdpersonalens uppmärksammande under vårdmöte : en beskrivande litteraturstudie / Intimate partner violence -observational barriers and success factors for healthcare workers during the healthcare encounter. : a descriptive literature review

Åberg, Siri, Eckhardt, Ellinor January 2021 (has links)
The background showed that violence against women in intimate partner relationships is a problem for the society and causes great suffering for the exposed individual, in the meantime the violence has the potential to affect the women’s physical and psychological health in a negative way. The injuries which cause physical harm to the women’s bodies and the traumatic experiences of the violence both affects the women’s mental health and generates a greater need for healthcare. It is in the healthcare encounters with these women that the healthcare personnel have the potential to expose the violence and help the women get away from the offender. The purpose of this study was to describe the barriers and success factors regarding healthcare personnel’s ability to pay attention to women who are victims of domestic violence in the healthcare encounters. As a method to gain knowledge in the subject the authors did a literature rewiev with systematic approach. In search of articles the databases Cinahl, PubMed and PsycINFO were used systematically after rewieving the quality of the articles the searches had generated a total sum of 20. Both the authors then rewieved and analysed the articles using a thematic approach to find the patterns of which grounded the categories that are presented in the result. The result showed three main categories which reflected both central barriers and success factors regarding healthcare personnel’s ability to disclose domestic violence. The main categories were: Communication, the healthcare organization, and signs of domestic abuse towards females. The categories all had subcategories as well which were: Difficulties in communication, how to approach the female victim, organisational barriers, organisational success factors, the healthcare workers lack of knowledge regarding identifying domestic abuse, the importance of clinical view and injuries typical of violence. The study result led to the conclusion that that to further improve the discovery of female victims of domestic abuse there need to be a greater organisational support, stronger cooperation between different establishments as well as strengthened knowledge among healthcare personnel regarding domestic abuse as well as regarding communicative strategies. Which can be achieved through education and strong guidelines.
