Watching and learning from the shadows : political knowledge among DREAMEer LatinosTafoya, Joe Robert 22 September 2014 (has links)
The fate of undocumented youth recently overwhelmed political dialogue on immigration and its effect on those individuals remains largely unstudied. This paper extends the scope of political information analyses from potential voters to undocumented childhood arrivals. Quantitative observations come from in-depth qualitative interviews in Los Angeles County, California and the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. It finds important regional differences in the ability of immigration status to motivate cognitive engagement of politics. It questions the threat hypothesis, as highly politically knowledgeable DREAMers appear to reside in supportive environments. Such places help equip them with the ability to attribute blame and channel anger or enthusiasm. Findings suggest profound dissimilarities in the potential for political participation if and when DREAMer Latinos gain access to citizenship. / text

Understanding the Healthcare Experiences of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) RecipientsKluesener, Jacob A 01 January 2019 (has links)
Background: There is limited research on the healthcare experience of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients both before and after enrollment in the program. DACA is a program designed to defer deportation to children and young adults in the United States for up to 2 years. The goal of this qualitative study is to explore the lived experiences of DACA students with regards to access to healthcare and perceptions of treatment. Method: This study is qualitative and uses a phenomenological approach. DACA Recipients (N = 5) were recruited from the UCF student population and 1:1 interviews were conducted. Interviews were transcribed and manually coded. Results: Thematic analysis revealed the following three themes (1) Meeting Needs (2) It Takes a Village and (3) Documentation Over Insurance Conclusion: The fundamental structure of the findings shows the struggles of receiving healthcare as an undocumented immigrant, and the limitations of DACA as a solution. Health insurance is a more prominent and impactful factor than documentation status in the quality and quantity of healthcare access. The healthcare experience ranges from volunteer clinics to local pharmacies. Although, if DACA recipients have insurance, their healthcare experience is more consistent, regardless of documentation. Their day to day lives is composed of meeting basic needs, receiving only necessary doctor's visits as a child, and being prepared for all circumstances in terms of future citizenship.

Draumkvedet and the Medieval English Dream Vision: A Study of GenreCarlsen, Christian 19 December 2008 (has links)
The Medieval English dream vision evidence influences from a variety of earlier vision literature, notably the apocalyptic vision and narrative dream. Philosophical visions by Plato, Cicero and Boethius, and Christian revelations of John and Paul contain traits that found their way into the dream poems by Langland, the Pearl poet and Chaucer. The Norwegian ballad Draumkvedet exhibits features that mirror these English visions. Notable characteristics pertaining to the character of the dreamer, the interplay between dreamer and dream, imagery of the vision, and structure, point to a common set of generic influences. Comparing Draumkvedet with its English counterparts demonstrates that they stem from the same tradition. Draumkvedet bares special resemblance to the Dream of the Rood, Piers Plowman and Pearl in its exploration of Christian doctrine and its appeal to the audience.

The Landlady differs from all of Dostoevskys other works. Badly received by critics when it was published, it was his first attempt to create a literary figure to whose depiction he would devote practically his entire subsequent career. There is no doubt that the most salient feature of Russian literature of the nineteenth century is the phenomenon of the hero. With this novel, Dostoevsky presents in the romantic dreamer", not only a phenomenon still current in Russian life at the end of 1840s, but also a new link in the evolution of the "hero of the time."

Dans une certaine tradition américaine, la frontière est moins une limite territoriale qu’un seuil dynamique, un locus americanus, lieu de tous les possibles. Et c’est bien en ce sens que le romancier du Maine, homme des transgressions, homme de l’entre-deux, écrit «à la frontière» : entre littérature et engagement, entre la scène et la chaire, le masculin et le féminin, l’Indien et le Blanc, sa prose hésite, souvent. Hence, our focus will be on the alternative literary vision for « the great Republic of Letters », encapsulated within Neal’s own writing, shaped as it was by the uncertainties of a nation in the making.
