Material Experience Mycelium-Based Composite : Study of local biodegradable materials in combination with Mycelium

Kjellqvist, Emelie January 2023 (has links)
Mycelium-based composite (MBC) is being developed and researched in multiple commercial markets as an alternative sustainable material. MBC utilizes the mycelium ability to create a web-like structure in lignocellulosic structures. However, producing the material in a natural environment and subjecting it to various tests; the study aims to examine the distress of the southern Swedish climate on MBC grown in different substrates. The selection of substrates are based on their compatibility to fungal growth, the substrates are also locally sourced and grown. This is to explore MBC material production with a focus on circular economy as biodegradable material in architecture could help develop a reuse and recycle system. Various tests were done on the different substrate MBC to determine its characteristics, limitations and opportunities. The tests were developed with a focus on architectural construction and the southern Swedish climate; meaning experiments including MBC reaction to fire, water and temperatures. The results are based on the different MBC materials reaction, this ends with a description on how the materials could be used and developed in the future.

Cyclist Behavior to Avoid Vehicle Collisions Using Drive Recorder Videos

Zhao, Yuqing, Mizuno, Koji 02 January 2023 (has links)
Since bicycles travel at high speeds and are frequently involved in traffic accidents, reducing bicycle fatalities and injuries is one of the most important issues in traffic safety. In car-to-cyclist collisions, the perpendicular configuration occupies the largest proportion of these collisions. Driver responses in lateral intrusions of cyclists at intersections have been examined [1,2], focusing on the drivers' braking reaction time and the time-to-collisions (TTC). Cyclist behavior can also have a significant intluence on car-to-cyclist collision occurrence. Cyclist bebavior has been investigated in naturalistic conditions and using in-depth accident data. In addition, the videos of drive recorders provide useful information on the cyclist behaviors [3]. This study investigated cyclist behavior with the drive recorder of cars in near-miss incidents and collisions. [From: Introduction]

Automation and synchronizationof traction assistance devices toimprove traction and steerability ofa construction truck

Dabhi, Meet, Vaidyanathan, Karthik Ramanan January 2017 (has links)
Automotive development has always been need-based and the product of today is an evolutionover several decades and a diversied technology application to deliver better products to theend users. Steady increase in the deployment of on-board electronics and software is characterizedby the demand and stringent regulations. Today, almost every function on-board a modernvehicle is either monitored or controlled electronically. One such specic demand for AB Volvo arose out of construction trucks in the US market. Usersseldom have/had a view of the operational boundaries of the drivetrain components, resultingin inappropriate use causing damage, poor traction and steering performance. Also, AB Volvo'sstand-alone traction assistance functions were not suciently capable to handle the vehicle useconditions. Hence, the goal was set to automate and synchronize the traction assistance devicesand software functions to improve the traction and steerability under a variety of road conditions. The rst steps in this thesis involved understanding the drivetrain components from design andoperational boundary perspective. The function descriptions of the various traction softwarefunctions were reviewed and a development/integration plan drafted. A literature survey wascarried out seeking potential improvement in traction from dierential locking and also its eectson steerability. A benchmarking exercise was carried out to identify competitor and suppliertechnologies available for the traction device automation task. The focus was then shifted to developing and validating the traction controller in a simulationenvironment. Importance was given to modeling of drivetrain components and renement ofvehicle behavior to study and understand the eects of dierential locking and develop a differentiallock control strategy. The modeling also included creating dierent road segments toreplicate use environment and simulating vehicle performance in the same, to reduce test timeand costs. With well-correlated vehicle performance results, a dierential lock control strategywas developed and simulated to observe traction improvement. It was then implemented onan all-wheel drive construction truck using dSPACE Autobox to test, validate and rene thecontroller.Periodic test sessions carried out at Hallered proving ground, Sweden were important to re-ne the control strategy. Feedback from test drivers and inputs from cross-functional teamswere essential to develop a robust controller and the same was tested for vehicle suitability andrepeatability of results. When comparing with the existing traction software functions, the integrateddierential lock and transfer case lock controller showed signicantly better performanceunder most test conditions. Repeatable results proved the reliability of developed controller. The correlation between vehicle test scenarios and simulation environment results indicated theaccuracy of software models and control strategy, bi-directionally.Finally, the new traction assistance device controller function was demonstrated within ABVolvo to showcase the traction improvement and uncompromising steerability.

Exploring the Correlation Between Theory of Mind and Drive for Thinness

Hudak, Sarah 01 May 2014 (has links)
Research suggests that, similar to individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, people with Anorexia Nervosa demonstrate an inability to utilize Theory of Mind concepts. Theory of Mind allows healthy control populations to attribute mental states to others by accurately predicting and understanding the behavior of others. This study's intent was to further explore the relationship between eating disorders and Theory of Mind. Using an online survey management system (Qualtrics), 210 female students from a large metropolitan southeastern university completed the Drive for Thinness subscale of the Eating Disorder Inventory and the Reading the Mind in the Eyes task. It was predicted that higher Drive for Thinness would be associated with a diminished capacity for Theory of Mind concepts. Using a bivariate correlation, the findings were not found to be statistically significant in support of the hypothesis, but provide strong implications for future research.

Vem predisponerar för ätstörningar? En litteraturstudie om olika grupper i samhället som är i riskzonen för ätstörningar

Bas, Vanja, Mårtensson, Marianne January 2004 (has links)
The purpose of this literature review was to find common factors for the persons who predispose to eating disorders. These factors shall help the nurse to recognise early signs of eating disorder behaviors. The literature review is directed to the nurse and will answer the issue: Which groups in the community run the risk of developing eating disorders? Furthermore, this knowledge shall lead to a better understanding of persons having eating disorders and be used as an aid in his/her encounter with these patients. The method was a literature review based on eight scientific articles, which were interpreted on the basis of the competence of the nurse. The results indicated that persons with eating disorders had a very low self-esteem and a low body image. At the same time, it appeared that these persons with an anorectic behavior had put high demands on themselves. The results also indicated that an eating disorder behavior in adult age often had its origin in the childhood.

High-Resolution, Non-contact Angular Measurement System for PSA/RSA

Sloat, Ronald D 01 March 2011 (has links) (PDF)
A non-contact angular measurement system for Pitch Static Attitude (PSA) and Roll Static Attitude (RSA) of hard disk drive sliders is designed and built. Real-time sampling at over 15 KHz is achieved with accuracy of +/- 0.05 degrees over a range of approximately 2-3 degrees. Measuring the PSA and RSA is critical for hard drive manufacturers to control and improve the quality and reliability of hard drives. Although the hard drive industry is able to measure the PSA and RSA at the subassembly level at this time, there is no system available that is able to measure PSA/RSA at the final assembly level. This project has successfully demonstrated a methodology that the PSA/RSA can be reliably measured in-situ using a laser and position sensitive detector (PSD) technology. A prototype of the measurement system has been built using simple and inexpensive equipment. This device will allow a continuous measurement between the parked position on the ramp and the loading position just off of the disk surface. The measured data can be used to verify manufacturing processes and reliability data.

Subjektets motsägelsefulla kraft : Hur Adorno utmanar subjektiviteten inifrån

Schlottau, Rebecca January 2022 (has links)
Theodor W. Adorno is both known and criticized for his philosophy of the subject. While his focus on subjectivity by many is deemed an outdated approach, Adorno himself claims that subjectivity must be challenged through the subject itself. What this implies, and how the role of the subject in its transformation can be envisioned, is what I aim to discuss in this paper. My study adresses the subject’s challenge from different angles. The first is an analysis of the subject in relation to its object-part, where I show how the subject can come close to its object, not only through bodily impulses but also, and importantly, through subjectivity itself by self-reflection on its mediation. The second is an investigation of how Adorno uses Freud’s drive theory, and how the drive for self-preservation can be dangerous or utopian depending on the subject’s interaction with it. The third is a comparison of the position of Adorno to those of Jürgen Habermas and Giorgio Agamben, each in their own way sharing Adorno’s diagnosis of subjectivities challenge, but choosing entirely different paths to address it. This comparison shows how Adorno, by insisting on the subject’s role in its own challenge, makes the subject aware of its actual location in the false world, without giving up the idea of its redemption. Habermas and Agamben each try to leave subjectivity behind in ways that for Adorno would not only be false but also dangerous. In doing so, they miss the point that we cannot be anything but subjects, and that the challenge therefore must be addressed from within. My aim with this paper is to show how Adorno’s philosophy of the subject can open critical theory for a bolder utopian thinking than what Habermas’ heritage has accomplished, while at the same time preserving the subject’s power to accomplish change which postmodernists like Agamben seem to have given up upon.

J'aime tes yeux quand je m'y vois ; suivi de L'Oeil et la honte : miroir infini, vers une mystique de la pulsion scopique

Thibodeau, Camille 03 1900 (has links)
The creative part of this work presents the play J’aime tes yeux quand je m’y vois. Following dream work as a dramaturgy of the fantasy, the theater within the theater supports the staging of the ideal self, torwards a dancing couple, desire and fear, inspired by the voracity of the Eye. Next, in an essay exploring the scopic field and its representation in literature, the symbols of narcissism and Christianity are articulated with psychoanalysis and phenomenology. Bringing closer perceptual faith and mystification of perception, the analysis of the character enlighten the montage of a fantasy scene in the fictional text, through a selection of three novels: Bruges- la-Morte (1892, Rodenbach), Histoire de l’œil (1928, Bataille) and À ciel ouvert (2007, Arcan). This study leads to enclose the origin and the destiny of shame, an affective corollary of the gaze, in a brief reading of Genesis and Apocalypse.
