The (un)successful pastor : an investigation of pastoral leadership selection within churches in Ontario

Bonis, Christopher Richard 06 1900 (has links)
This thesis contends that the pastoral role is significant to the effective functioning and well-being of the church. Therefore, the initial selection of a pastor is a vital component and contributes to those desirable outcomes. The question being considered within this thesis is: What are the factors within a church hiring process which may play a role in successful or unsuccessful pastoral ministry? As there are many variables even within this process, the scope of this thesis is limited to the identification and selection of pastoral leadership from the perspective of the pastoral participants. This perspective is drawn from one denominational association in Ontario —the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptists (FEB hereafter) within the Central region of Canada. In examining this question, an empirical, mixed-methodology is used. The triangulation of a literature review, surveys, personal interviews and a biblical, theological treatment allowed for the most comprehensive perspective and treatment of the research question (Leedy, 2010, p. 99). There is a significant amount of inductive reasoning included, based upon personal interactions within cultural contexts and experiences. This is due to the inadequacy or lack of current theories and available literature relative to the question being studied. This motivates me towards the inclusion of a grounded theory methodology as a component of this study (Leedy, 2010, p. 142). Hiring the right pastor is a challenge at the best of times. As the church struggles to respond to a rapidly changing and diverse culture it presents greater challenges. Rates of pastoral turnover are high and the general duration of pastoral ministry is low. This, in turn, impacts ministry effectiveness. This study of hiring practices and pastoral experiences begins to identify elements as to why some pastors are successful and others are not. It allows for the reflection and consideration of whether the church is, what I have termed, “Equipping the Called, or Calling the Equipped”. There is cause for hope, as there always is within God’s church. This thesis identifies concerns, as well as some positive practices and experiences that can be helpful to inform practice and potential change. As Osmer acknowledges, “observing good practice in other congregations is a powerful source of normative guidance” (Osmer, 2008, p. 152). / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M. Th. Church-State Law, or "Ecclesiastical Law of the State," studies the legal principles which may be applicable to religious activity, exercised individually and collectively. The study of Church-State Law in Brazil lacks a thorough introduction to the constitutional and civil aspects of religious organizations: such an introduction is the main end of this work. Following a brief introduction, the main aspects of religious freedom and the principle of private autonomy as it concerns religious organizations are explained. A careful introductory analysis of Church-State Law in Brazil is thus developed: (1) the historical aspects, including a detailed account of the relations between Catholicism, the established religion up to 1889, and the government; (2) the current constitutional principles, as presented in the text of the federal Constitution of 1988, regarding the rights and claims of religious organizations; (3) how the same constitutional principles are to be used in the interpretation of Private Law (especially the Civil Code of 2002), fostering and preserving the uniqueness of religious organizations in the Brazilian legal system. A brief complementary chapter presents some aspects of the legal position of religious institutions in three other nations whose constitutional documents have influenced the current Brazilian federal Constitution (France, Spain, and the United States) / As garantias constitucionais de prote??o ? liberdade religiosa t?m aplica??o concreta no Direito Privado.

Research on the ecclesiastical province of Vienne and its bishops in the Early Middle Ages (IV- XI centuries)

Nimmegeers, Nathanaël 02 December 2011 (has links)
The evolution and the consistency of the province of Vienne, which counts five dioceses in 450, six by 580 and four by 800, depend on the political history because the changes of sovereignty and the royal and imperial decisions could as well make it possible for the bishops to increase their influence as to hinder their Viennese intentions. That does not prevent the formation of a heart of the province made up of the cities of Vienne, Geneva, Grenoble and Valence. The metropolis hosts administrations and royal sepulchers, enjoys active bishops devoted both in the Church and the century activities, and possesses a very complete religious topography which differentiates it from its suffragans. This hyper concentration of Vienne seems at the same time the cause and the consequence of the development of an ecclesiastical province where the bishops play a fundamental role. The prelates, often coming from the old Gallo-Roman senatorial families, carry out until the beginning of the VIII century many prerogatives on behalf of the sovereigns and occupy in their cities a considerable place, as well during their lifetime as after their death. When the Carolingians came to power, the bishops’ circle opens socially and geographically, which results in a modification of the funerary traditions. The bishops, who benefit from the cultural policy undertaken under the Pippinides, as the genuine work of Adon of Vienne points it out, remain attached to a Carolingian outlook of the common weal. From the end of the IX century onwards, the bishops of Geneva seek to move away from their archbishops, fervent supporters of the Bosonides, while getting closer to the Rodolpohiens and then to the emperor. The Church of Vienne obtains rapidly a chapter cathedral, houses big monasteries, Old Testament relics, a sumptuous chief-reliquary and one of the rare imitations of the Holy Sepulchre attested before the XI century. The other Churches appear less original and less structured. The ecclesiastical institutions, the recruitment of the clergy and to a certain extent the worship of the saints reveal however the survival of a certain Roman tradition on a provincial scale. Thus, the bishops keep full control of the regular life, the handling of the relics and the saints, the creation of the parishes and probably the construction of the rural churches. The monks, the aristocrats and the canons have consequently very often a limited room for maneuver. This feature is particularly evident in Vienne where the archbishops hold personally or almost entirely their diocese.

(Barend Jacobus), 1946- 17 May 2005 (has links)
This dissertation presents a contribution to measure the church order and ecclesiastical law in the Nederduitsch Hervormde Church of Africa against the Presbyterial-synodal understanding of church government. The latter forms the canonical outline of Biblical Reformative Theology as an indication of the theology currently practiced in the Nederduitsch Hervormde Church of Africa. At the outset a historical overview is given on the origin and development of the Presbyterial-synodal church government that was mainly shaped by Calvin in Geneva and later elaborated upon in Paris, and then further developed in the Netherlands. Reference is also made to the Algemeen Reglement of 1816, the 1951 church order of the Nederlandse Hervormde Church, as well as the 1951 church order of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Church of Africa. A description is given of what is understood by Biblical Reformative Theology as a revelation theology, which objectively assesses man as a sinner redeemed by grace through Jesus Christ. In this regard the church is willed by God and exists in eschatological expectation when Jesus will be everything in everyone. An exposition of Presbyterial-synodal church government calls attention to the church's existence from the beginning of time, founded by God, and it is therefore of a covenantal nature. Offices are seen as gifts from God to mankind to bring those who had been saved by Jesus Christ to faith in Him. Office bearers gather together in an assembly of offices to govern the church according to the Word of God. The church is a confessing church who confesses its faith with the church of all ages, as summarized in the ecumenical creeds and the three formularies of unity. Reference is also made here to the sacraments, ceremonies, church festivals and days of remembrance. The chapter concludes with a reference to church discipline as well as the relationship between church and state. Finally the church order and ecclesiastical law in the Nederduitsch Hervormde Church of Africa is measured against the previous definition of the Presbyterial-synodal understanding of church government. / Thesis (PhD (Theology))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Church History and Church Policy / unrestricted

La vente des biens nationaux dans le Vendômois (1789-1850) / The sale of "Biens nationaux" in Vendômois 1789-1850

Daviot, Marie-Françoise 24 September 2013 (has links)
In 1789, the traditional area of the Vendômois, bordered by the Beauce and Sologne regions, is poor and the revolutionary authorities have not succeeded in addressing the prevailing food shortage. By growing the landed property of the upper classes, who already had a stronghold on three quarters of the region’s real estate and who would now control the political and administrative system, the sale of “biensnationaux” would reinforce their influence over the population. Although the paternalistic system in the field of agriculture came to an end, it not made way for a flourishing capitalistic system. The lack of development in industry and agriculture will remain important throughout the XIXth century. The outcome of the sale has been an almost complete disappearance of church property whileownership by the nobility was divided by three. The transfer of ownership to the peasantry which might have seemed real at the times of the first sales was greatly diminished by the subsequent resales over the next fifty years. Another noteworthy point which emerges from this study is the sense of moderation of “vendômoise”population, and of those political leaders, when it was able to appoint to administer locally. Although the local population, which had a strong attachment to tradition, did take part in the acquisition of national lands, it resisted to extreme behaviour of the political leaders from Paris and Blois. Unlike what happened in many other more urban french regions, persecutions and destructions which characterized the period of the national sales were not systematic in the Vendômois, much to its credit.

These are positions taken by the Church in two separate significant stages of cultural production of the meaning of the Trinity, but with the same purpose. It followed up after the Councils of Nicea and Constantinople the effort of some priests, especially of St. Augustine in the systematization of the Trinitarian tent. We assume that are the internal heresies in the Church who are provoking the deepening and systematization of Trinitarian tent. Thus this present work searches the unity from the Augustinian analysis of the Trinity and the support that this is the main "church fathers".

The church in its relationship to the world according to the Gospel of John: an exegetical study on the narrative ecclesiology in the Gospel of John

Lanket, Jakob 02 1900 (has links)
New Testament / M. Panovník v roli autora: Obraz anglosaského krále očima soudobých umělců a společnosti / The king as a writer: The image of Anglo-Saxon rulers in the perspective of contemporary artists and society

Kantorová, Aneta January 2015 (has links)
The present thesis focuses on the importance of the written word as a ruling device of the Anglo- Saxon kings. Due to the availability of historical evidence, the studied period begins in 597 with the arrival of Christian missionaries from Rome and ends prior to the Norman Conquest in 1066. The kings' approach to the written word is analyzed on the basis of surviving literary and iconographic evidence, i.e. on documents composed for or by the rulers, and on the visual images of the rulers as portrayed in surviving manuscripts. The first chapter provides a historical background necessary for the correct interpretation of the examined texts and portraits. This section is aimed at the main concepts discussed in the thesis: medieval authorship, medieval kingship, and the spread of Christianity within the Anglo- Saxon kingdoms. The second chapter offers the analysis of written documents and focuses on the texts composed within the scope of King Alfred's educational and religious reform. The close reading of the OE translations demonstrates the king's use of the texts as didactic tools mainly serving to promote religion and learning within the kingdom. The key texts are Gregory's Pastoral Care, Augustine's Soliloquies, and Boethius's Consolation of Philosophy; an additional context of the king's life and...
