Urbanismo ecológico, do princípio à ação: o caso de Itaquera, São Paulo, SP / Ecological urbanism, from the principle to the action: the case of Itaquera, São Paulo, SP

Akinaga, Patricia Harumi 23 May 2014 (has links)
Ecological Urbanism has emerged as a way to reconcile the landscape with urban occupation, ruled by the potentialities and limitations of natural resources. Green áreas do not function only beautifying and improving the visual and environmental quality, they become true engineering artifacts and elements of a high performance green infrastructure. The street tree system gains strength and scale while connecting fragments of urban forests and green areas scattered in the urban fabric. The research results change the look on the river floodplains. Segregated in the contemporary city, under Ecological Urbanism principles, floodplains become structural elements and links of the urban fabric adding great value. The thesis presents the hypothesis that it is possible to implement the Ecological Urbanism in São Paulo through the implementation of a comprehensive process and tools ranging from public policies, private sector actions and community engagement resulting on the improvement of environmental quality and urban life. The research focuses on Itaquera neighborhood impacted by the implementation of large urban facilities part of an institutional hub and home to the new soccer stadium of Corinthians club that will host World Cup 2014 games. Through field surveys, mapping and analysis of case studies in the United States and in South Africa is possible to identify a clear opportunity for transformation in the vicinity of the arena based on ecological principles. At last, the research presents an Ecological Urbanism proposal for the surroundings of the Arena Corinthians taking advantage of its local potentiality, green areas, hydrograph and new dynamic as a result of new public and private investments.

Projecting Urban Natures : Investigating integrative approaches to urban development and nature conservation

Erixon Aalto, Hanna January 2017 (has links)
Projecting Urban Natures is a compilation thesis in critical studies in architecture. It comprises three journal articles and four design proposals in which I have taken an active part. The point of departure for this thesis is the renewed emphasis on social-ecological interaction and resilience that is currently taking place within ecological systems science, and the opportunities that these paradigmatic insights in turn have opened up within urbanism and design. The thesis argues that although they are promising, these emerging integrative frameworks are seldom brought into mainstream planning and urban design practice. Instead, the structuring of “nature” and “city” into a dualistic balance relationship still permeates not only the general planning discourse, but also makes its way into planning documents, notably influencing distinctions between professions. In response, this thesis sets out to rethink and explore more integrated approaches to human/nature relationships, through the utilization of design-based and transdisciplinary research methods. While this core aim of the thesis remains the same throughout the work, the task is approached from different perspectives: through different constellations of collaborative work as well as through parallel case-based explorations that emphasize the relational, anti-essentialist and situated articulation of values of urban natures and how these forces come into play. The work has been propelled through workshop-based, site-specific, and experimental design processes with professionals and researchers from the fields of e.g. systems ecology, natural resource management, political ecology, urban design, architecture, and landscape design, as well as planners, developers, local interest groups, and NGOs. Specifically, projects performed within this thesis include: Nature as an Infrastructural Potential – An Urban Strategy for Järvafältet; Kymlinge UrbanNatur together with NOD, Wingårdhs, MUST and Storylab; Årsta Urban Natures with James Corner Field Operations and Buro Happold; and Albano Resilient Campus — a collaboration between Stockholm Resilience Centre, KTH and KIT. / <p>QC 20171102</p>

Socialt och ekologiskt byggande på Nya Jägersro : Ett platsspecifikt planeringskoncept för fastigheten Nya Jägersro i Malmö / Social and ecological development at Nya Jägersro : A site specific planning concept for the property Nya Jägersro in Malmö

Nilsson Öhrn, Nora, Jakob, Fagerström January 2021 (has links)
Uppsatsens frågeställningar baseras i två problematiker. / This thesis has been created to act as a basis for the preparation of a structural sketch of the property Nya Jägersro in Malmö. The thesis aims to create a planning concept that combines social and ecological sustainability by taking into account the specific characteristics of the site. Both the municipality and the property owner, the two most influential stakeholders, place great focus on sustainable development. The thesis examines two problems. The first is the property owner's separation of sustainability aspects, which through the reasoning that sustainability is created through interactions between different sustainability aspects can become problematic. The second is how Nya Jägersro as a place is affected by ideals of densification in order to build sustainably. To address these problems the purpose of the thesis is to develop a planning concept that combines social and ecological sustainability by taking into account the specific characteristics of the site. The theoretical framework consists of three theories that deal with sustainable site-specific planning and design for developing sustainable cities. The methods of data collection that have been used are site reading, literature studies and semi-structured interviews. The planning concept that is finally presented is referred to as JägersGro, which coincides in several respects with SMT's and Malmö Stad's agendas, but also deviates in some aspects. The biggest deviating factor in relation to SMT is that JägersGro assumes that sustainability consists of the combination of different sustainability systems. Another deviating factor from both actors is that JägersGro advocates the idea that the human impact on the natural systems should not only be reduced. Instead, sustainable districts are considered to be involved in regenerative processes in order to function in a balanced cycle with nature.

En R-Urban stadsdel, från teori till verklighet : Ett designkoncept för Nya Jägersro i Malmö / A R-Urban district, from theory to reality : A designkoncept for Nya Jägersro in Malmö

Bogatic, David, Eklöf, Elina January 2021 (has links)
This thesis has been made to act as the basis for the development of a structural sketch over the estate, Nya Jägersro, in the southeastern part of Malmö. The thesis seeks to create a design concept that combines social and ecological sustainability and to explore a changed view of how a site becomes ecologically sustainable without overlooking the site's qualities. The thesis questions are based on two problems. The first one is how today's city planning chooses to densify cities based on ideals to build sustainably. The second one is the view of what is sustainable. To address these problems the thesis purpose is to produce a design concept that combines social and ecological sustainability and takes the site's specified qualities into consideration. The theory consists of the concept’s Ecological urbanism and the R-urban, both striving for sustainable development and complemented by theoretical building blocks which work as the bridge between theory and reality. The method used in this thesis is a qualitative method combined with design-thinking. The used methods for information gathering are site observation, literary studies, and semi-structured interviews. The proposed design concept builds on an alternative way to design cities. The tools used for this alternative way of designing have been developed through design-thinking as a complementing method where the theoretical building blocks, together, creates a continuously transformative process that aim to create sustainable neighborhoods with a focus on a more sustainable way of life. The design concept seek to help realizing a more ecological city in practice, that takes on all aspects of the city which can make the city ecological instead of just environmentally friendly. The design concepts, thus align with SMT:s and Malmö Stads agendas, but differs in some aspects. The largest differentiating factor is the view on how dense Nya Jägersro should be built, and how the site´s urban and rural qualities can be taken as a point of departure for designing the new built environment.
