Living Together With NatureÖstrand, Linda January 2021 (has links)
In a development area of Trollbäcken, a suburb half an hour south of central Stockholm, I have created a sustainable housing project in the form of a byggemenskap/baugemeinschaften with a focus on sustainability. With the help of friends and family members and their wishes for a future home as basis for my programme, I investigated what sustainable housing could be with a special interest in the relationship between material and immaterial sustainability, between the buildings and the community that inhabits and maintains them, aiming to create a built environment that supports the sustainable lifestyles of the residents.

Fler ekobyar, färre miljöproblem? : More ecovillages, less environmental problems?Ollander, Sandra January 2020 (has links)
To solve sustainability problems we need to pay more attention to self sustainable societies with demand for less consumption, energy and transport as our lifestyle can not be combined with sustainability, climate-friendly and fair. Researchers and members of communities believe that the environmentally beneficial lifestyle that is associated with ecovillages and collective housing can contribute to reaching sustainable development goals and a sustainable lifestyle. A literature review and interviews were carried out with the purpose to investigate how ecovillages can help us live within the planetary boundaries and which social challenges ecovillages face. The results showed that ecovillages can help us to live within the planetary boundaries within six categories: ecological systems, ecological architecture, energy systems, transport systems, food systems and environmental friendly behaviour. Social challenges in ecovillages were leadership, decision making, undivided visions and goals, uneven balance of power, ethical questions, unemployment, organisation and different backgrounds.

Exploring the Role of Eco-Communities in Fostering Environmental Stewardship : A Study of Volunteer Tourism at Cloughjordan Eco-VillageKress, Maximilian January 2023 (has links)
In recent years, there has been a shift in interest in travel, toward an increasing interest in sustainable travel and alternative forms of travel. As a result, there is also an interest in research studying these alternative travel concepts. Therefore, this qualitative study looks at experiences in ecovillages, focusing on volunteer workers. It examines the effects of the ecovillages that influence these volunteers to become environmental stewards. For this purpose, the concept of place attachment, as the connection to the place and the people within the ecovillage, is used. As well as the concept of transformative learning, i.e., the change of views and orientations of the participants of the learning program. To get a better overview of the context of the case study, the literature on voluntourism and voluntourism in the global north (due to the location of the case study), as well as on communities and eco-communities will be examined. The case study is an ecovillage in Ireland, located in Cloughjordan, the middle of Ireland. There, 11 in-depth interviews and observations were conducted, and the volunteers were interviewed about their experiences and their time in the ecovillage. The results of this study suggest three ways in which volunteers are influenced by their ecovillage experiences to become environmental stewards. On the one hand, this is the case due to the recognition of the importance of the developed soft skills. As this is learning for oneself and improving communication with other people. Furthermore, by learning with and from each other, the volunteers are led to take stewardship actions. Finally, it is also the community itself that manages to implement stewardship among the volunteers through the way of life and togetherness and the high value of environmental actions through place attachment.

Toward Sustainable Community: Assessing Progress at Dancing Rabbit EcovillageJones, Kayla Brooke 08 1900 (has links)
Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage, an intentional community of roughly 70 members in Northeastern Missouri, is working to create societal change through radical sustainable living practices and creation of a culture of eco-friendly and feminist norms. Members agree to abide by a set of ecological covenants and sustainability guidelines, committing to practices such as using only sustainably generated electricity, and no use or storage of personally owned vehicles on community property. Situated within the context of a sustainability study, this thesis explores how Dancing Rabbit is creating a more socially and ecologically just culture and how this lifestyle affects happiness and well-being.

Diretrizes para o desenvolvimento de Ecovilas Urbanas / Guidelines For the Development of Urban EcovillagesJosé, Flávio Januário 25 November 2014 (has links)
This research, organized into four parts, based on a planning system called Dragon Dreaming, aims at creating a guideline model for the development of urban ecovillages. This model can be used as an option for transforming existing neighborhoods or creating new sustainable urban settlements. For that, technical visits, participation in events on the subject, and addressing theoretical aspects led to collaborative methods, that substantiated the process of creating and implementing a case study called Santa Margarida Urban Ecovillage in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil, as part of the experimental research. Part I, DREAM, presents individual aspirations that, expressed theoretically in the research, establish the collective reference that include the concepts of the term \"ecovillage\" and the Dimensions of Sustainability; Part II, PLANNING, was structured to ensure suitability between theory and environment as presented in the experimental part of the research and was based on strategies and alternatives; Part II, PLANNING, was structured to ensure that the theory was adequate to the environment, as presented in the experimental part of the research and based on strategies and alternatives; Part III, ACHIEVEMENT, presents feasible concepts, as experienced in the consolidation of the project Santa Margarida Ecovillage, in which unanticipated results were also considered and, Part IV CELEBRATION establishes the closing of the cycle, and, based on practice, adds a new experience, that enables future reproduction of the experiment and the research, thus contributing to the expansion of ecovillage networks and consequently the quality of life. The elements and systems based on the Permaculture and Evaluation of Closed Cycle planned for the creation of the Santa Margarida Ecovillage (today undergoing government approval procedures) complement the urban legislation, that takes into account the regulations established by the Brazilian Association for Technical Standards - ABNT, characterize the settlement as an ecovillage and constitute guidelines in a format of Municipal Law project, thereby creating parameters for planning, assessment and approval of new ecovillages.

Previous issue date: 2009-06-15 / Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo / The purpose of this research is to study two experiences of permaculture communities and other sorts of alternative agriculture which are generally considered agroecological practices. I choose two socially distinct experiences for the reason that one of them refers to landless rural workers, whereas the ecovillage is part of an alternative communities middle-class movement. This enables us to identify the social aspects to which it is possible to assign the amount of success of those examples. The communities that have been studied were described following their history, economic and social condition, intellectual and ideological universe; in a way they could be compared to evaluate the process of how to achieve sustainability. I believe that the relevance of studying such experiences is due to the fact that they might constitute the technical support to social projects seeking to empower and to further human development of small and low-resources communities. Especially in the Brazilian context, they can work as frameworks for agrarian reform settlements, traditional communities and family agriculture in general. Ultimately, there is little scientific literature dealing with permaculture and other sorts of alternative agriculture in communities in Brazil. To summarize, there are still several challenges for those communities to achieve self-sufficiency, difficulties which can be overcome and some successes that can be reproduced.

Ecovilas e a construção de uma cultura alternativa / Ecovillages and the construction of an alternative cultureRoysen, Rebeca 18 April 2013 (has links)
This research aimed at investigating the cultural aspects of an ecovillage: its routine activities, practices, the relationship its members establish among themselves and with nature, their projects and conflicts. The field research included observations and interviews in a specific ecovillage, and was based on the concepts of gaze, from Simone Weil and Walter Benjamin; of sympathy, from Ecléa Bosi and Henri Bergson and of alternation between subject and object, from Paulo de Salles Oliveira. This study also presented concepts like community, from Martin Buber; culture, from Alfredo Bosi and James Jasper; and resistance, from Ernesto Sabato. Starting from a critical analysis of the culture of the consumer society (Richard Sennett), the ecovillage was then understood as a creator of an alternative culture: affirming itself as resistance to certain values and practices of the dominant culture, and, at the same time, proposing new possibilities of life, work, leisure, and relationships. At the end, this study attempted to deepen the reflection about those dimensions of life in ecovillage that point to a cultural construction of resistance and alternative proposition, as well as about the dimensions that present challenges to cultural change. It questions some of their practices and indicates possible ways to overcome the perceived challenges
