The coexistence of real and virtual environments enables experiences that would not be possible without this technology. Some of the reasons why AR learning experiences differ from other technology are: (i) it enables contextualized interaction between real and virtual worlds, (ii) it enables tangible interaction metaphors for object manipulation, and, finally, (iii) it enables smooth transition between the real and virtual contents. While AR offers new learning opportunities, it also creates new challenges for education in different domains, such as technological, learning and pedagogical issues. This work intends to provide some reflections about the challenges involved in the process of evaluating AR educational technologies. In order to better understand those issues, a systematic review was carried out aiming to identify how AR technology has been evaluated. Taking into account lessons learned during the review, a projective educational AR tool, especially designed to young children education, the ARBlocks, was evaluated. This tool was evaluated in the field of language learning with three different groups. The study involved the teacher as an instructional designer along with the use of multiple metrics. From the analysis of the ARBlocks in the classrooms, it was possible to observe that this tool offered different possibilities for language teaching to young children. The results obtained demonstrated that, in general, the ARblocks contributed to student’s learning and the practice and reinforcement of language abilities. From the reflections presented, some guidelines were proposed in order to assist the evaluation of AR educational tools. The use of multiple metrics as well as the active involvement of teachers in the elaboration of contents are encouraged as way to better understand the impact of technology in the teaching and learning process. / A tecnologia de Realidade Aumentada (RA) possui grande potencial de aplicação na área educativa. A coexistência de ambientes reais e virtuais abre possibilidades de aprendizado que não poderiam ser possíveis sem este tipo de tecnologia. Algumas razões pelas quais experiências de aprendizagem com RA se diferem das demais são: (i) suporte a uma interação contextualizada entre ambientes reais e virtuais, (ii) uso de metáforas com interfaces tangíveis para manipulação de objetos e, por fim, (iii) a habilidade de transição suave entre o real e o virtual. Enquanto oferece inúmeras novas oportunidades de aprendizagem, a introdução de novas tecnologias com RA cria desafios em diferentes domínios, como o tecnológico, de aprendizagem e os desafios pedagógicos. Este trabalho visa prover algumas reflexões acerca dos desafios envolvidos no processo de avaliação de tecnologias educativas com RA. Como forma de melhor compreender essas questões, foi realizada uma revisão sistemática com vistas a identificar como são realizadas avaliações de ferramentas educacionais com RA. A partir da revisão empreendida, foram observadas as principais formas de avaliação de ferramentas educativas envolvendo esta tecnologia. A partir destes conhecimentos adquiridos, foi realizada a avaliação de uma ferramenta educativa baseada em RA projetiva, especialmente desenvolvida para o ensino infantil, o ARBlocks. Tal ferramenta foi avaliada no campo da aprendizagem de novas línguas com três grupos distintos. O estudo envolveu o professor como instructional designer, bem como o uso de múltiplas métricas de avaliação. A partir da análise do ARBlocks em sala de aula, foi possível observar que esta ferramenta oferece inúmeras possibilidades para o ensino de línguas para crianças pequenas. Os resultados obtidos demonstraram que, no geral, o ARBlocks auxiliou no processo de aprendizagem dos estudantes e na prática e reforço das habilidades linguísticas. A partir das reflexões apresentadas, alguns guidelines foram propostos com vistas a auxiliar na avaliação de ferramentas educativas com RA. O uso de múltiplas métricas e o envolvimento ativo dos professores na elaboração dos conteúdos é encorajado como forma de melhor compreender os impactos provocados pela tecnologia no processo de ensino-aprendizagem.

A Framework for Multiple Adaptable Pedagogical Strategies in Intelligent Tutoring Systems

The need to give educators the ability to enter a particular teaching strategy of their choice into an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) and have the ITS respond appropriately to each student has been stated by many researchers. For example, an educator could tell the ITS to keep students within a certain help level ratio (how much help they request), or to introduce a new topic in a particular manner and the ITS simply carries this out at each learning point of interest. Educators could then try new strategies, ones that unaided are impossible to try out in class (such as keeping a student within a help-seeking range) or difficult within an ITS (as the ITS would have to be specially programmed in that way). Current ITSs provide adaptivity to the student at the domain level but not necessarily at the pedagogical level. While a variety of pedagogical strategies have been implemented (e.g. apprenticeship, socratic, practice), there is no system that offers parts or all of these strategies with the ability to choose between them dynamically. In this project, we designed a new framework for an ITS to include multiple, potentially adaptable pedagogical strategies. This was done by breaking up the pedagogical module into separate components. The Pedagogical Strategy Set (PSS) contains all the strategies, written as constraints. The Pedagogical Student Model (PSM) keeps track of which pedagogical strategies were used by each student. Within the ITS, there is still a smaller, separate pedagogical module to deal with domain-specific strategies. The Pedagogical Control Centre (PCC) contains the logic of when and how to use the pedagogical strategies. It gathers its information from the other modules and uses decision logic to trigger strategies. We implemented and evaluated this framework within the context of SQL-Tutor and found that the framework could be used to enter pedagogical strategies, which in turn compared favourably to the original SQL-Tutor. This proof of concept opens up the possibility of the logic and algorithms that could be implemented (e.g. in the PCC) in future ITSs. The PSS is a separate module, written in a different language, independent of ITSs. This could lead to sharing of pedagogical strategies between tutors. Furthermore, students learn differently to each other; this framework allows them to do so.

Αυτό επιτυγχάνεται με το μοντέλο του χρήστη στο οποίο υπάρχουν πληροφορίες γι αυτόν. / In this project are presented the mainly adaptive web based educational systems their functionality as well as the characteristics, which are differentiated depending on the user state. Assessing the Impact of Positive Feedback in Constraint-based Tutors

Across many domains, Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) are used to facilitate practice, providing a customized learning environment and personal tutoring experience for students to learn at their own pace through effective student modeling and feedback. Most current ITSs are built around cognitive learning theories including Ohlsson's theory on learning from performance errors and Anderson's ACT theories of skill acquisition which focus primarily on providing negative feedback or corrective feedback, facilitating learning by correcting errors. Research into the behavior and methods used by expert tutors suggest that experienced tutors use positive feedback quite extensively and successfully. This research investigates positive feedback; learning by capturing and responding to correct behavior, supported by cognitive learning theories. The research aim is to develop and implement a systematic approach to delivering positive feedback in Intelligent Tutoring Systems, in particular SQL-Tutor, a constraint-based tutor which instructs users in the design of Structured Query Language (SQL) database queries. An evaluation study was conducted at the University of Canterbury involving a control group of students who used the original version of SQL-Tutor giving only negative feedback and an experimental group using the modified version of SQL-Tutor where both negative and positive feedback were given. Results of the study show that students learn quite similarly from one system to another, however those in the experimental group take significantly less time to solve the same number of problems, in fewer attempts compared to those in the control group. Students in the experimental group also learn approximately the same number of concepts as students in the control but in much less time. This indicates that positive feedback results in increased amount of learning over a shorter period of time and improves the effectiveness of learning in ITSs.

A sensibilidade ao contexto não necessariamente implica em adaptação, mas para que um sistema sensível ao contexto possa guiar uma adaptação efetiva, precisa acompanhar a ocorrência de determinados eventos no sistema e reagir de forma adequada a estes eventos. Este caráter adaptativo tem sido buscado em sistemas Web, de forma a se comportarem de maneira personalizada em atendimento às necessidades particulares do usuário. Dentre uma diversidade de sistemas Web que se propõem a apresentar como diferencial caráter sensível ao contexto do usuário, este trabalho estuda um domínio de aplicação específico: os sistemas de educação adaptativos baseados na Web. Este domínio se mostra crítico, pois necessita ser personalizado tendo em vista um usuário não comum e com uma série de particularidades que devem ser levadas em conta: o aluno. O objetivo principal deste trabalho é apresentar uma solução para o problema da adaptação de ações sensíveis às situações vivenciadas por alunos em um sistema de educação adaptativo baseado na Web. Este problema engloba diversas questões que são atualmente foco de pesquisa em áreas relacionadas à sensibilidade ao contexto, entre elas: (i) as formas de obtenção dos dados relativos ao contexto do aluno; (ii) a análise dos diferentes grupos e modelos de contexto que descrevem a situação em si, vivenciada pelo aluno no momento atual; (iii) as formas de avaliação e relacionamento dos dados de contexto do aluno, de forma a permitir inferência de sua situação atual. Para este fim, foi desenvolvida uma solução capaz de auxiliar o funcionamento de sistemas de educação adaptativos, de forma a apresentarem caráter reativo à situação vivenciada pelo aluno. A solução desenvolvida consiste de um módulo de sensibilidade à situação, construído com o objetivo de analisar as diversas particularidades existentes no cotidiano atual do aluno, se mantendo útil a ele independentemente do seu local atual, do dispositivo computacional utilizado e da tarefa em curso, respeitando as características individuais do aluno. De acordo com a situação detectada, ações de adaptação são fornecidas à mídia adaptativa, com intuito de prover uma experiência educacional voltada às necessidades reais do aluno. Context awareness doesn’t imply necessarily in adaptation, but an adaptive system in order to guide an effective adaptation need to be aware about the occurrence of specific events and properly react to them. This adaptive character has been looked in web systems, in order to behave in a personalized way in attending the particular needs of the user. Among a variety of web systems that propose to present a context aware character, this work presents a case study in a specific application domain: web-based adaptive educational systems. This area is critical because the system needs to be customized in order to attend a not common user, with a variety of particularities that should be taken into account: the student. The main objective of this work is to present a solution to the problem of adaptation of situation-aware actions lived by students in a web-based adaptive educational system. This problem involves several issues that are currently focus of research in areas related with context-awareness, like: (i) the ways of obtaining student’s context data, which often lead to uncertain and ambiguous analysis (ii) the analysis of different groups and context models that describe the situation itself, experienced by the student at the present time, (iii) the ways of evaluating and correlating student’s context data, to allow the inference of their current situation. To this end, we developed a solution capable to assist the functioning of adaptive educational systems; in order to present a reactive character to the situations lived by the student. The solution consists on situation-aware module which aiming at evaluating the several particularities of the student’s actual routine to remain useful to him, regardless of his current location, the computing device used, day of week and the ongoing task, respecting the individual characteristics of the student. According to the detected situation, adaptive actions are presented to the adaptive hypermedia, aiming at providing a better educational experience to the student. At the end of this work, the solution developed is tested with a real e-learning environment to verify its practical appliance.

Σχεδιασμός και υλοποίηση crowdsourcing διαδραστικής εκπαιδευτικής εφαρμογής με την χρήση του σημασιολογικού ιστού

Τα τελευταία χρόνια γίνεται ολοένα όλο και πιο έντονη η επιθυμία, τόσο από εκπαιδευτικούς ή μαθητές, αλλά και από άτομα μεγαλύτερης ηλικίας που θέλουν να αναπτύξουν την γνώση τους σε κάποιο αντικείμενο, για την δημιουργία εκπαιδευτικών μηχανών (λογισμικών) που θα μπορούν να αντικαταστήσουν σε μεγάλο βαθμό τον ρόλο του εκπαιδευτικού. Η προστιθέμενη αξία ενός εκπαιδευτικού λογισμικού θα μπορούσε να είναι η εύκολη πρόσβαση σε μεγάλο όγκο πληροφοριών, η πιο συστηματική εκμάθηση, καθώς και η εξοικονόμηση χρόνου και εκπαιδευτικών πηγών (εννοώντας τους εκπαιδευτικούς ως φυσικά πρόσωπα). Το ζητούμενο δεν είναι απλά η δημιουργία ενός εκπαιδευτικού λογισμικού αλλά ενός "σωστά" δομημένου εκπαιδευτικού συστήματος. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι ο εκπαιδευόμενος θα μπορεί να αντλεί σωστά και μεθοδικά πληροφορία από αυτό, όπως ακριβώς θα έκανε αν είχε στην διάθεσή του έναν καταρτισμένο εκπαιδευτικό. Στην παρούσα λοιπόν εργασία, μέσα από ένας συνδυασμό νέων τεχνολογιών όπως είναι αυτή των οντολογιών και του σημασιολογικού ιστού καθώς επίσης και θεωριών συσχετιζόμενων με την εκπαίδευση, παρουσιάζονται τα βήματα για δημιουργία ενός διαδραστικού crowdsoursing εκπαιδευτικού συστήματος. Παρουσιάζεται ένα σύστημα που με απλά λόγια θα είναι σε θέση να εξυπηρετεί μαθητές και εκπαιδευτικούς αλλά και οποιονδήποτε άλλο ενδιαφερόμενο, να προσφέρει μεθοδική εκμάθηση, να συλλέγει πληροφορία από τους χρήστες του την οποία να επεξεργάζεται και να την διαθέτει σε αυτούς σε ξανά βελτιωμένη και εμπλουτισμένη. / -

Le contexte multilingue andorran, tant du fait de la mixité d’origines de sa population mixte que de la pluralité des systèmes éducatifs qui y sont implantés, se prête fortement à la recherche en sociolinguistique et en didactique des langues et du plurilinguisme. Cette thèse a pour but de tenter d’apporter une suite de réponses à des questionnements concernant les compétences linguistiques en langue française des apprenants en fin d’école primaire des systèmes français et andorran, écoles où le français n’est pas seulement langue enseignée mais également langue d’enseignement-apprentissage pluridisciplinaire. Les incidences de l’environnement social multilingue sur les apprenants et les influences de systèmes éducatifs qui ont une approche didactique des langues variable, sont à la source de cette enquête et des analyses qui en résultent. / The andorran multilingual context, both because of the mixed origins of its mixed population and because of the plurality of educational systems that are located there, is an ideal area for research in sociolinguistics and didactics of languages and multilingualism. This thesis has the purpose of trying to answer a series of questions referring to the french language competences of students at the end of primary school in the French and Andorran systems, schools where French is not only a language taught but is also a language of multidisciplinary teaching-learning.
