Radiography Faculty Engaged in Online Education: Perceptions of Effectiveness, Satisfaction, and Technological Self-Efficacy

Cherry, Shirley J., Flora, Bethany H. 01 January 2017 (has links)
Purpose To assess radiography faculty perceptions of the effectiveness of online courses. Methods An original survey instrument was created by selecting items from 3 instruments used in prior research and adding unique questions designed to elicit demographic data from faculty. The sample included a national dataset of radiography faculty members employed in Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology–accredited programs in the United States. Results Findings showed that faculty perceptions of online course effectiveness are not affected significantly by faculty position, type of institution, faculty age, or years of teaching experience. Positive perceptions of the effectiveness of online courses moderately increased with years of teaching online courses, number of online courses taught in the past 5 years, and perceived competence with the use of technology. Faculty satisfaction with interaction in online courses moderately increased as the years of teaching online courses increased. However, the number of years of teaching online courses was not related to faculty satisfaction with teaching online courses or faculty satisfaction with institutional support. Online technology acceptance had a moderately positive relationship with perceived ease of use and a strong positive relationship with perceived usefulness of online technology. In addition, the use of technology-enhanced learning methods had a strong positive relationship with technological self-efficacy. Conclusion Radiography faculty perceptions of the effectiveness of online courses improved with experience in teaching online courses and competence with use of technology. Perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness of online technology were related directly to online technology acceptance. Furthermore, faculty members with technological self-efficacy were more likely to use technology-enhanced learning methods in the online environment.

Custo-efetividade do uso de imunoglobulina intravenosa e de plasmaferese no tratamento da síndrome de Guillain-Barré no Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre / Cost-effectiveness analysis of intravenous immunoglobulin and plasma exchange therapies for the treatment of guillain-barré syndrome in an university-based hospital in the south of brazil

Britto, Alexandre Paulo Machado de January 2009 (has links)
Objectives: To compare the cost-effectiveness of two distinct therapies, Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIg) and Plasma Exchange (PE) in the treatment of Guillain-Barré Syndrome, concerning the public health care system. Compliance to the guidelines of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee of the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre was a secondary objective. Methods: A cross-sectional, economical analysis was conducted, including patients treated for GBS in the period from June, 2003 through June, 2008 in Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA). The cost-effectiveness of the use of IVIg and PE in such patients was studied through the cost minimization method, considering direct medical costs only (2008 currency), yield by the management of the institution. Patients receiving treatments other than PE or IVIg were excluded. Data were collected by chart reviews. Severity of disease on admittance was classified as follows: mild disease, when the patient was able to walk; moderate disease, when the patient was unable to walk, and severe disease, when assisted ventilation was required. Disability on discharge was established by the 7-point scale of Hughes. Compliance to the guidelines of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee was evaluated through the dose and prescription scheme of IVIg. Results: Twenty-five participants (2 to 70 years of age) were included in the study, 5 were submitted to treatment with PE, using human albumin as replacement for plasma, and 20 were treated with IVIg. The total treatment cost for PE in a single patient was US$6,058.85 (±1,701.78 SD), and the same expense for IVIg was US$18,344.57 (± 12,259.56 SD) (p = 0.035). Total inpatient cost was US$25,729.79 (± 18,714.54 SD) in the PE group, and US$34,768.16 (±27,766.01 SD) (p=0.530) in the IVIg group. The main clinical outcome was improvement in the 7-point disability grade scale. The median of that measure in patients admitted with a severity grade 3 treated either with PE and IVIg was the same. Secondary outcomes, such as in-hospital stay, ICU stay, and number of days on mechanical ventilation revealed no statistically significant difference between treatments. Conclusions: As the mean expenses of both therapeutic options are compared, one clearly stands-out as less onerous. Clinical outcomes, when compared, reveal no statistical difference after each treatment. We concluded that, in HCPA, plasma exchange is more cost-effective than intravenous immunoglobulin.

Evaluation of Potentially Eco-Efficient Solutions: Functional Sales and Industrial Ecology / Evaluation of Industrial Ecology, Eco-Efectiveness and Functional Sales under a framework of Eco-Efficiency

González Ocón, Santiago January 2009 (has links)

Design of products permits to yield goods and services to produce satisfaction on customers, which is measured as value. However, it is at this stage in which most of the environmental impact, from a lifecycle perspective, is added to the product. Eco-design aims at increasing value of products while reducing the burdens on the environment by means conscious design towards efficient use of resources. That efficiency, referred to as eco-efficiency, can be increased in a number of manners within environmental engineering. Traditionally, different fields have tackled materials, energy flows and products from different angles or approaches. In this thesis we describe Functional Sales (FS) and Industrial Ecology (IE) as examples of these. Within this latter, we put emphasis on Industrial Symbiosis (IS) and Eco-effectiveness. We consider these approaches are suitable to work in the framework of eco-design to increase ecoefficiency. By adding services to material products, and managing material and energy flows with a more ecological consciousness, we expect to increase value of products while reducing the impact on the environment.

To analyse this potential improvement, we developed a method involving a new eco-efficiency index (VERI), that recursively intends to ease decisions on possible eco-efficient alternatives. This index and its method are applied to a case study on management of olive oil supply in region of Murcia, Spain. Here, we propose three scenarios that will involve the implementation of FS and IE to compare the outcomes in value and environmental performance against an idealised current supply chain. The results obtained, although not accurate, suggest that FS and EI should be more taken into account in eco-design and, this latter, to also consider holistic viewpoints to find more eco-efficient alternatives for a product development.

Enforcement in class actions on behalf of consumers: the initiatives and the strategies of entities those can file non mandatory class actions to enable efectiveness against the decission of the judiciary

The effectiveness of the jurisdictional provision is the most important activity of jurisdiction. This paper, based on empirical data on the experience of a kind of private entity that can file a class action non-governmental organization and through structured research that establishes the cases on the subject, aims to raise sensitive issues for the low effectiveness of courts judgments in class action. Tender points emphasized are the subject of discussion and theorizing, with the goal of presenting paths and deep trouble for the effectiveness of collective defense, without claiming to provide solutions to such problems, but the idea of some referrals, seeking experience in Comparative Law. It is concluded, essentially, that the path to the effectiveness of collective class action goes through the collective enforcement by supervisory writ, that need to be worked by public and private entities those can file a class action and better appreciated and understood by the judiciary.

Another important point to be aware is that the labor legislation does not provide specific provisions regarding the employee s right to privacy protection, reason why the general constitutional provisions are applicable to the labor relationships, given that, as a fundamental right, the right to privacy is inalienable and held by all the members of the society. Moreover, we find that the right to property is also constitutionally granted as a fundamental right and must be protected by the State as an employer right, even in the labor jurisdiction. Given to this conflict, we will reflect about the variables involving this concept and theories involving the effectiveness of fundamental rights and about its applicability, mostly in the relations between individuals. In addition, we will seek to the concept of the right of privacy opposed to the employer s right to property. Then, we will draw an overview of the employer s powers, scrutinizing its facets and boundaries to establish its extent considering the right to privacy in the workplace. Also, we will analyze the labor court s understandings subsequent to the publication of the 1988 Federal Constitution.
