This volume contains the papers presented at the International Conference on “Models in Developing Mathematics Education” held from September 11-17, 2009 at The University of Applied Sciences, Dresden, Germany. The Conference was organized jointly by The University of Applied Sciences and The Mathematics Education into the 21st Century Project - a non-commercial international educational project founded in 1986. The Mathematics Education into the 21st Century Project is dedicated to the improvement of mathematics education world-wide through the publication and dissemination of innovative ideas. Many prominent mathematics educators have supported and contributed to the project, including the late Hans Freudental, Andrejs Dunkels and Hilary Shuard, as well as Bruce Meserve and Marilyn Suydam, Alan Osborne and Margaret Kasten, Mogens Niss, Tibor Nemetz, Ubi D’Ambrosio, Brian Wilson, Tatsuro Miwa, Henry Pollack, Werner Blum, Roberto Baldino, Waclaw Zawadowski, and many others throughout the world. Not all papers are about research in mathematics education, a number of them report on innovative experiences in the classroom and on new technology. We believe that “mathematics education” is fundamentally a “practicum” and in order to be “successful” all new materials, new ideas and new research must be tested and implemented in the classroom, the real “chalk face” of our discipline, and of our profession as mathematics educators. These Proceedings begin with a Plenary Paper and then the contributions of the Principal Authors in alphabetical name order. We sincerely thank all of the contributors for their time and creative effort. It is clear from the variety and quality of the papers that the conference has attracted many innovative mathematics educators from around the world. Parametric study of tensile response of TRC specimens reinforced with epoxy-penetrated multi-filament yarns

The paper presents a meso-scopic modeling framework for the simulation of three-phase composite consisting of a brittle cementitious matrix and reinforcing AR-glass yarns impregnated with epoxy resin. The construction of the model is closely related to the experimental program covering both the meso-scale test (yarn tensile test and double sided pull-out test) and the macro-scale test in the form of tensile test on the textile reinforced concrete specimen. The predictions obtained using the model are validated using a-posteriori performed experiments.

Tailored disorder and anisotropic scattering in photonic nanostructures

In dieser Arbeit untersuchen wir das optische Antwortverhalten von planaren Spektrometern basierend auf ungeordneten Streuzentren, dielektrischen Verbundnanopartikeln mit einer plasmonischer Ummantelung, sowie volldielektrischen magnetooptischen formveränderten Metaoberflächen. Dafür benutzen wir sowohl Mie und Mehrfach-Streutheorie als auch ein unstetiges Galerkin Zeitraumverfahren basierend auf finiten Elementen zur numerischen Berechnung der elektromagnetischen Felder. Wir stellen insbesondere eine theoretische Designstudie vor, um ungeordnete Spektrometer mit hoher spektraler Auflösung zu erhalten. Darüber hinaus geben wir eine alternative Strategie an, um durch Untersuchung der optischen Eigenschaften von Verbundnanopartikeln eine Erhöhung der bevorzugten Rückstreuung zu erreichen. Zum Schluss präsentieren wir eine Erhöhung der Faraday-Rotation bei gleichzeitig hoher Transmission von volldielektrischen magnetooptischen Metaoberflächen, welche aus formangepassten Nanodisks bestehen. / In this thesis, we study the optical response of planar spectrometers based on disorder scatterers, composite dielectric nanoparticles with plasmonic shell, and all-dielectric magneto-optical shape-modified metasurfaces. Therefore, we employ both Mie and multiple scattering theory as well as a discontinuous Galerkin time-domain method based on finite elements for the numerical computation of the electromagnetic fields. Specifically, we present a theoretical design study for obtaining random spectrometers with high spectral resolution. Furthermore, we provide an alternative strategy to achieve preferentially high backscattering by studying the optical properties of composite nanoparticles. Finally, we present enhanced Faraday rotation along with high transmittance in all-dielectric magneto-optical metasurfaces composed of shape-modified nanodisks.

La notion de progrès dans la philosophie de l'histoire de Kant

Dans ce travail, nous avons étudié la notion de progrès telle qu'elle se présente dans les multiples opuscules de Kant sur l'histoire. Avant de circonscrire cette notion, nous avons déterminé le statut de la réflexion philosophique sur l'histoire au sein de la philosophie transcendantale. Par la suite, nous avons explicité la notion de progrès à travers l' « Idée d'une histoire universelle au point de vue cosmopolitique » de 1784, le texte de 1793, « La religion dans les limites de la simple raison » et enfin « Le conflit des facultés » de 1798. En plus de montrer que plusieurs points de vue demeurent possibles chez Kant pour considérer le cours de l'histoire de l'humanité, nous avons fait le point de façon critique sur les diverses interprétations présentées dans la littérature secondaire concernant la notion de progrès et avons discuté les problèmes qu'elle soulève dans les opuscules sur l'histoire.

How stressful was the COVID-19 pandemic for residents specializing in family practice?

Background The coronavirus pandemic poses many challenges for medical personnel. During the first phase of the pandemic, psychological stress became increasingly apparent. This was a complex and difficult situation, especially for physician residents specializing in family practice (GP trainees), who were not yet able to draw on years of practical experience. In this context, the Kompetenzzentrum Weiterbildung Allgemeinmedizin Sachsen (Competence Center for Continuing Education in General Medicine Saxony) (KWASa) developed a survey on how to deal with the concerns and challenges perceived at the time. The purpose of the study was to obtain information on psychological well-being in the pandemic context, as well as on expectations, fears, and protective measures in everyday work. The aim was to identify stress factors for general practice (GP) trainees during a pandemic situation to be able to consider the support needs in the design of future residency training programs, especially for GP trainees. Methods An online questionnaire was distributed from May 5, 2020 to June 4, 2020 among GP trainees enrolled in KWASa since 2018. The questionnaire consisted of standardized items, which were evaluated descriptively, and open-ended items with free-text answers, which were evaluated according to the principle of qualitative content analysis. Results The results show the relevance of the topic as 61% of respondents indicated that they were concerned about the coronavirus. Most GP trainees also gave an affirmative response regarding emotional challenges. In this context, various stressors could be identified within both the professional and personal environments. There were four particularly salient factors: (1) the fear of infecting one’s family as well as patients with the SARS-CoV-2 virus; (2) missing or insufficiently existing protective measures; (3) an increased need for consultation due to unpredictable patient behavior as well as uncertainties in patient treatment; and (4) communication difficulties within the collegial environment. Conclusions The study aimed to identify the support needs of GP trainees in crisis situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of the survey can be used for the development of suitable continuing education programs for physicians in further training.
