Exploring the relationship between emotional intelligence and resistance to change in a pharmaceutical company / Mignon van der WaltVan der Walt, Mignon January 2014 (has links)
In a fast paced change external and internal business environment in which businesses are to deliver to their maximum capacity, there is little room for resistance to change by employees. Acknowledging all the elements responsible for resistance to change within the corporate world, the study aimed to find if there is any relationship between the emotional intelligence of employees and their resistance to change initiatives which slows down company potential to stay abreast of market needs.
By making use of a 4-point Likert type scale and questionnaire data was collected from 47 pharmaceutical representatives based in 5 different provinces within South Africa. The analysis was done based on a variety of statistical methods such as Mann Whitney, Spearman’s rho’s. The results suggest that there is a definite relationship between the overall emotional intelligence of employees and resistance to change.
The study focusses its efforts on the pharmaceutical industry that offers service and products to healthcare professionals. Perhaps research on other sectors of the business could offer a broader view of the impact of emotional intelligence on resistance to change as the representatives only make up a small proportion of the overall business.
An important insight of this study is that emotional intelligence has proven to play a very significant role in a variety of functions of the business and deserves deeper investigation and attention. Although only a small share of the business formed part of the sample of the study, it is clear that the company has to address resistance to change and the initiators thereof. Little study has been done on the relationship between emotional intelligence and resistance to change within the South African market, adding available data relating to the topic relationship and importance. / MBA, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

Parental guidelines regarding the emotional needs of primary school children diagnosed with ADHDCoetzee, Jacoba Martina 30 November 2006 (has links)
The aim of this study was to create awareness of the emotional needs of children diagnosed with ADHD. In order to reach the aim of this study, an initial literature study was executed to describe ADHD and the emotional needs of children. Semi-structured interviews and two projective techniques were used to conduct the empirical study. Valuable data was also collected from the biographical questionnaires completed by the parents. Based on the data collected and analysed, findings were made which were verified by means of a second literature study. This was followed by conclusions which served as the basis for recommendations that were made in the form of guidelines to the parents, with the aim to make the parents aware of the emotional needs of their children diagnosed with ADHD. These guidelines will be made available to the parents at a seminar that will be held on acceptance of this research. / Social Work / M.Diac. (Play Therapy)

A Gestalt play therapeutic process to address self-awareness in the pre-adolescentSmit, Mathilda 30 November 2004 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / During pre-adolescence, whilst the transition from primary to high school normally takes place, the child faces drastic physical and emotional changes.
Emotional intelligence is important in order to answer to demands in this stage and can be addressed and enhanced.
Self-awareness (ability to identify own emotions, relate to others, being aware of personal strengths and weaknesses) is not addressed sufficiently. The research problem has been the use of a gestalt therapeutic process to address self-awareness during this stage, and the goal of the study, to explore the value of such a process.
Qualitative research directed the process, which included literature studies, interviews with parents of respondents and eight gestalt therapeutic sessions with four pre-adolescents.
Various gestalt play therapeutic techniques and -activities have been utilized. The processing and integration of the results of the empirical study, made it possible to explore and note what the value of a gestalt therapeutic process is on self-awareness in the pre-adolescent. Therefore the goal of the study has been successfully reached.

vroee adolessent, selfbewussyn as basiese komponent van emosionele

Relasiebeeld van begaafde Tourettesindroomlyers / Relationship images of gifted Tourette Syndrome sufferersMoller, Hendrina Cecilia 06 1900 (has links)
In hierdie studie is Tourettesindroom as neuro-genetiese toestand aangespreek en die wyse waarop
dit in verskillende leer-, gedrags- en emosionele problema by begaafde Tourettesindroomlyers
manifesteer.
Suid-Afrika. / This study addresses Tourette syndrome as a neuro-genetic condition and the manner whereby it
manifests itself in various learning, behavioural and emotional problems experienced by gifted
Tourette syndrome sufferers. Their relationship-formation and life world are constituted by
their cognitive, emotive and genetic capacity which manifests itself in Tourette syndrome and
giftedness. The emotional immaturity which accompanies their superior intellect causes
disorientation which results in problems in their relationships. Negative connotations and
involvement in their relationship-formation influences each facet of their being and gives rise to
the lowering of their perception of their self worth.
In South Africa, valuable potential and talent is lost because of an inadequate knowledge of
giftedness and Tourette syndrome. Efforts must be directed towards making information about gifted
Tourette syndrome sufferers available to parents, schools and universities. A constructive plan
of action is necessary that will support gifted Tourette syndrome sufferers to the benefit of
South Africa. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. (Sielkundige Opvoedkunde)

Model for emotional intelligence as a determinant of organisational climateGerber, Frans Jacobus 08 1900 (has links)
The main objective of this research was to establish a model for emotional intelligence as a determinant of organisational climate. This model should help companies and organisational psychologists to better understand the interrelatedness of the two constructs in order to optimally enhance organisational performance. This research was conducted in a large organisation, utilising a large sample (n = 1 612) of employees in the financial services industry.
During the first phase of this research, emotional intelligence was conceptualised from literature research within the trait paradigm and organisational climate as a molar construct. A theoretical model of emotional intelligence as a determinant of organisational climate was developed and suggested a link to organisational output.
During the second phase of this research (empirical research), assessment instruments for emotional intelligence (the Gerber Emotional Intelligence Scale) and organisational climate (the High Performance Climate Questionnaire) were developed and validated. Thereafter an assessment instrument for work output was designed to test the link with performance.
The structural equation model (SEM) produced a new best-fitting model of emotional intelligence, organisational climate and work output. The model indicates that emotional intelligence does not correlate with work output as expected, but organisational climate does correlates moderately with work output and explains almost 40% of the variance in work output. The strongest influence seems to flow from teamwork and management. The regression weights between emotional intelligence and organisational climate were trivial, although the model fit indices were all within an acceptable range.
The researcher attributed the lack of support for the model to the characteristics of the employees of this type of organisation and concluded that emotional intelligence should not be seen as a determinant of organisational climate in this specific financial services sector.
The results further indicate that significant differences exist between the organisational climate experiences of four biographical categories (race, position level, age and geographical region) and also for the categories of position level and age for work output. These differences need to be considered when developing future interventions.
This research contributes towards a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between emotional intelligence, organisational climate and work output. The three newly developed questionnaires and the SEM could help researchers and practitioners to apply the research model in other industries and subsequently improve organisational outputs. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / D. Designing for Sustainable HCI : Location-Based Mobile Application for Encouraging Environmental Friendly Ways of TransportationGharibpour, Sohrab, Madzinova, Veronika January 2016 (has links)
This thesis aims to explore what are the main factors for designers to consider, when they design persuasive technologies for improving environmentally sustainable behavior. This paper starts out with a definition of sustainability as such, while also describing the most pressing issues within ecological sustainability. The biggest part of related research is dedicated to the persuasive technologies and three main factors of ability, trigger and motivation. We also talk about a fourth, additional factor of an emotional relationship. Besides persuasive technologies, this part describes sustainable Human-Computer Interaction, location-based services, and ethical issues are mentioned as well. The first part of the next section is dedicated to the description of a High Fidelity prototype of persuasive mobile application. The second part talks about quantitative and qualitative methods used while collecting data. After that, the reader is presented with the study results, which are then also analyzed. The following part discuss these results in a more depth. In the end, we summarize obtained results and the whole study.

Evaluating the Efficacy of the Parents Activate Literacy Skills ProgramCorbisiero, Amii 01 January 2009 (has links)
The present study explored the efficacy of a parent implemented emergent literacy intervention to promote reading readiness and to improve parent-child relationships among preschoolers and their caregivers. Subjects were 24 parents and their preschool children ranging in age from three to five years who attend preschool at the Mailman-Segal Institute (MSI) for Early Childhood Studies. An assessment of the students' pre -literacy skills was conducted and teacher and parent rating scales that measured social- emotional and behavioral functioning were collected. Parents were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Parents assigned to the experimental group learned to implement activities from the Parents Activate Literacy Skills (PALS) curriculum in their daily routine to promote pre-literacy skills. Parents assigned to the control group learned to implement parenting techniques to promote improved parent-child interactions in an adapted version of Russell Barkley's Parent Training Program. Adherence to interventions was monitored by parents' self-report, and fidelity of implementation was assessed throughout the research by trained observers. The proposed study seeks to understand better the skills required for early literacy acquisition among preschoolers. The children were assessed pre and post-intervention using selected subtests of the Woodcock-Johnson III Achievement Battery and the Woodcock-Johnson III Tests of Cognitive Abilities. Parents were asked to complete behavior rating scales and a measure of parenting stress, while teachers were asked to complete behavior rating scales prior to and post-intervention. One-way (treatment versus control) analyses of covariance were used to test for differences between groups. Results from the analyses revealed that children in the Literacy Intervention group performed significantly better than children in the Behavior Management group on Oral Comprehension, Sound Blending, and Phonemic Awareness subtests of the Woodcock-Johnson. Additionally, parents in the emergent literacy intervention showed a significant decrease on the parent-child dysfunctional interaction scale of the Parenting Stress Index (PSI)-Short Form.
