Workplace change is caused by the utilization of new technology, changing legislation, globalization and competitive markets. Employees are exposed to new management techniques as well as altered Human Resource policies and activities which consequently lead to an altered employment relationship. The psychological contract plays a major role in the relationship between an employee and employing organisation. The aim of this study was to determine employees' work outcomes associated with the psychological contract within private training institutions. The research method included a comprehensive literature review and an empirical study. The measuring instrument the Psychological Contract of Employment Survey (PSYCONES) "Questionnaire on the perceptions of work was used to attain the research objectives. Through target sampling 218 employees participated in the study. The SSPS programme was utilized for statistical analysis and it was found that no significant relationship between job satisfaction, health, well-being and organisational commitment existed. There was a correlation found between job satisfaction and health and well-being. Regression analysis indicated that variance in job satisfaction and organisational commitment is practically significant but not statistically significant. The same type of analysis indicated that health and well-being did not have a significant amount of predictive value with regard to organisational commitment. A structural model that explicates the nature of the causal linkages between the six main constructs comprising the ODQ was developed and tested. Data obtained from 273 employees in a chrome manufacturing plant was used. This research found that the proposed model offers a plausible account of the influences that exist between the six main constructs. The benefit of this structural model will be in the enhanced interpretation of the diagnostic results derived from the ODQ. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie stel ondersoek in na die interne struktuur wat onderliggend is aan die Organisasie Diagnostiese Vraelys (ODV). ‘n Strukturele model wat die onderliggende kousale verhoudings van die ses hoofkonstrukte van die ODV blootlê, is ontwikkel en getoets. Data van 273 werknemers, verbonde aan ‘n chroom vervaardigingsaanleg, is gebruik. Die navorsing toon dat die voorgestelde model ‘n aanneemlike weergawe is van die onderliggende verhoudings wat tussen die ses hoofkonstrukte bestaan. Die voordeel van die voorgestelde model lê daarin dat dit die interpretasie van resultate, wat uit die diagnose verkry is, kan verbeter.

The effects of corporate intranet use on employee self-concept and organizational commitment

This study investigated how Corporate Intranets are used by employees. It also examined the relationships between Intranet use and employees' self-concept and their commitment to their organization. In total, 230 surveys were collected from a large financial company in the high-tech industry headquartered in Silicon Valley. The survey measured organizational commitment, self-concept, work-self-concept, information seeking behaviors, Intranet use, types of information found on the Intranet, and additional demographic information. Statistics were computed using the SPSS program to run bivariate correlations. This study yielded many findings. Three key findings have emerged from this study that contribute to our understanding of self-concept in the work environment and new factors related to organizational commitment. The first indicated a positive relationship between employees' satisfaction with Intranet content and navigation and their work-self-concept. The second showed that satisfaction with Intranet content and navigation was also positively correlated with elements of organizational commitment. The third finding indicated that employees' work-self-concept had a significant relationship with elements of organizational commitment. The results of this study build on previous literature on information seeking behaviors, organizational commitment and self-concept. This study also contributes to academic research on the Intranet as a new organizational communication medium. The relationships between Intranet use and work-self-concept and commitment offer many possibilities for future research.
