"Green" Doesn't Always Make Good Impressions: Evaluations of Different Types of Environmentalists

Bashir, Nadia Yasmine 03 December 2012 (has links)
In the present research, I examined individuals' evaluative responses toward traditional representations of environmentalists (e.g., tree-huggers and radical activists) as well as less typical but more mainstream environmentalists. Undergraduate students read about one of three types of environmentalists (i.e., radical activist, tree-hugger, or mainstream environmentalist). Participants then rated the extent to which they liked the individual they read about. Results revealed that participants evaluated the tree-hugger and radical activist less favourably than a typical student. In contrast, participants responded as favourably toward the mainstream environmentalist as they did toward a typical student. These findings indicate that individuals have distinct impressions of different types of environmentalists: Whereas mainstream environmentalists may receive favourable evaluations from individuals, stereotypical environmentalists may elicit negative reactions and even alienate members of the public.

Caminhos e perspectivas para a popularização da permacultura no Brasil / Paths and prospects for the popularization of permaculture in Brazil

Ferreira Neto, Djalma Nery 26 May 2017 (has links)
The present research had the objective of elaborating a mapping of the groups of permaculture in activity in Brazil constructed from an online selfdeclaration form, interviews and field experiences. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected and a critical analysis of the \"state of the art\" of permaculture in Brazil was developed from its groups and promoters, as well as their practices, which were debated in the light of critical theory references, bringing to the surface this still little known concept and exposing some of the main challenges for its diffusion. Conceived in the mid-1970s by australians Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, permaculture is a design system connected to the creation of sustainable human settlements and the building of \'another possible world\', marked by specific ethical techniques and precepts, distinct from the hegemonic ones. The aggravation of the contemporary social and environmental crisis, together with the notorious rise of the ecological discourse that gains space, media and markets, makes permaculture - and a whole set of new practices considered \'green\', \'alternative\' and sustainable - gain centrality and attention, becoming the scene of a dispute that, on the one hand, aims to make them one more marketable item and, on the other hand, sees them as concrete possibilities for the construction of another society, more just, harmonius and egalitarian, understanding them as incompatible with the dictates and needs of the capitalist market. Some groups argue that the cooptation of permaculture practices transformed into commodities would reduce their transformative potential, as well as create barriers to their popularization, the focus of the present study. However, financial sustainability also presents itself as a challenge to those who dedicate their lives to the practice and diffusion of permaculture. Based on the cited combination between bibliographical research, documentary, interviews and field work, we sought to evaluate and discuss the paths and perspectives for the popularization of permaculture in Brazil.

Cavalcanti, Márcia Maria Rodrigues Travassos 02 June 2014 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Marcia M Rodrigues Travassos Cavalcanti.pdf: 1636540 bytes, checksum: 31282a010fdfb9f6eb63d4c62950bd2a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-06-02 / The present paper analyses the written and visual language used by some companies in its marketing campaigns that have the objective of strategically communicate its commitment to a sustainable development positioning, in order to cope with government demands and its consumers expectations. This work reflects over what are the strategies used by some brands and how they are perceived by their audiences and has as it main objectives the following ones: identify through the analysis of corporate communication the main characteristics of the relationship between man and the environment; analyze the concept of sustainability and its uses and investigate the suitability of the discursive field produced; because as the economist José Eli da Veiga said there are a lot of abuses being committed over this concept. The sustainability concept is present in a lot of events. For instance the Rio+20, a global conference organized by UNO that took place in Brazil and was attended by chiefs of State and Government that echoed in a lot of different sectors of society, mainly the Economy and Media and promoted some change of behavior in people all over the globe. Nevertheless, some marketing studies detected that these new attitudes demonstrated by Companies and consumers didn t start from a clear consciousness about this theme. On the contrary, they tell us that there is some confusion toward this concept and that the communication used by some Companies, despite aimed to reinforce an image of sustainability has elements that are not perceive by its consumers as relevant. The present paper uses the concepts developed by some authors as Fritjof Capra, Ilya Prigogine and James Lovelock to identify the relationship between Man and the environment. Lúcia Santaella, Cornellius Castoriadis, Peirce and Massimo di Felice in the analysis of signs used in media. And Edgard Morin and Deleuze in the understanding of how this theme is articulated in the social relationships. The paper considers that the communication has a decisive space to the development or blocking of the different societies and that it is important to identify in which scenery the subject is in order to recognize if its positioning demonstrate a disguised posture, far away from its proposed objective / Esta dissertação analisa a linguagem discursiva e visual utilizada por algumas empresas em suas ações de marketing, cuja intenção é comunicar estrategicamente seu posicionamento sustentável na mídia e assim atender às exigências governamentais e às expectativas do seu público-alvo.

Silva Júnior, Fernando Ferreira da 28 March 2007 (has links)
The aim of this research was to reveal, by means of the Environmental History and through the case studies about ASPAM Associação de Proteção Ambiental (Environmental Protection Association) and MOPEC Movimento Popular Ecológico (Ecological Popular Movement), how the values of the environmentalist movement leaders in the state of Sergipe are reflected in the movements they head. It was also the objective of this study to analyse the role of those leaders in the formulation of public policies relating to environment and the possible outside influences that are taken to the enviromentalist movements in which they are involved. In this purpose, researches were carried out at the Legislative Power Archives in Sergipe as well as in environment articles conveyed by the Gazeta de Sergipe newspaper. The period researched was from 1972 to 2002, aiming to investigate if Stockholm Summit, Rio-92 and, at last, Rio + 10 have exerted any influence in the values and studies of the leaders and affected the environmentalist movements. At the end of this study, it was verified the important role performed by the environmentalist leadership and, consequently, the importance of the environmentalist movements they represent, in the search for sustainability, by means of actions whose objective is the improvement in life quality, resulting in the direct participation in the formulation of public policies concerning environmental protection in Sergipe.

The Dam Fighters: Commons Environmental Rhetoric,  Rhetorical Citizenship, and Local Ethos

Murray, Savannah Paige 11 November 2020 (has links)
In this dissertation project, I examine the ways in which a grassroots environmental organization, the Upper French Broad Defense Association (UFBDA), was able to contribute knowledge and voice concerns regarding a Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) proposal between 1961 and 1972. The TVA proposal included a plan for comprehensive water resource development in western North Carolina which would have required in the implementation of 14 dams, flooding of more than 18,000 fertile agricultural acres and displacing 600 families from their ancestral homes. Employing archival research methods, in this dissertation I analyze the UFBDA's everyday rhetorical tactics which contributed to their overall success in preventing the implementation of the TVA project. I situate archival sources alongside contemporary scholarship in democratic practice, environmental rhetoric, rhetorical citizenship, and ethos, as discussed in rhetoric and writing studies. Overall, this dissertation demonstrates the ways in which the UFBDA case study offers a generative model for future environmental controversies, providing specific techniques which can contribute to the success of grassroots organizations mired in environmental controversies and contentious decisions. / Doctor of Philosophy / In this dissertation project, I examine the ways in which a grassroots environmental organization, the Upper French Broad Defense Association (UFBDA), was able to contribute knowledge and voice concerns regarding a Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) proposal between 1961 and 1972. In order to complete this dissertation project, I explored two archival collections pertaining to the UFBDA. Based on my findings in the archives, I provide new understandings of how grassroots environmentalism works, particularly in terms of how environmentalists use language in order to participate in decisions about the environment. More specifically, this dissertation documents how members of the UFBDA were able to describe the western North Carolina landscape as a commons and not a wilderness, work together across counties to create new opportunities to share their concerns over the TVA project, and establish their own credibility as knowledgeable citizens about their local environment. By highlighting specific components of the UFBDA's work, this dissertation provides examples that can be used by future grassroots environmental organization facing similar challenges regarding environmental controversies.

Discursos sobre sustentabilidade nas redes sociais digitais: uma análise no Twitter / Discourses about sustainability in digital social networks: an analysis on Twitter.

Ferreira, Estela Maria de Azevedo Nery 31 January 2014 (has links)
The digital social networks present themselves today as a new public space. At the same time, we live in an era of civilization crisis of overproduction and widespread consumption, which is affecting the support capacity of ecosystems and threatening the natural resources and biodiversity. Although already observed certain social consensus on the need to find alternatives for the conservation of natural environments, there are still major divergences in pathways to be adopted -from the most radical who advocate a transformation of the whole system of production and consumption, to the most conservative, who think about palliative measures. The topic of sustainability has become at the same time, a paradigm or social utopia, and a paradox, due the difficulty in promoting the necessary transformations. The research developed aimed to analyze the contents published in Portuguese in digital social networks, between November 2011 and July 2012, concerning the theme of the sustainability, in order to know the contents, the actors involved and their positioning on the matter. We used a commercial software for social network analysis for data collection. Have been (Were) captured over eighty thousand publications and was developed a method for qualitative and quantitative analysis of the content, using statistical analysis by using a word counting software and display of data in the form of word clouds (tags) by software usage suitable for this purpose. We could notice the presence humor among the most representative content, and the predominance of professionals from speech among the most influential actors. By filtering of data, excluding the items with links and publications more replicated, it was possible to access a data set more opinionative, analysis allowed knowing the positioning and opinions of society, in particular with respect to the issue of supermarket plastic bags. The results presented correlation with some research developed by researchers from the fields of computer science, discourse analysis, public opinion research, and social network analysis, which obtained similar results to those found in our study, what indicates the efficacy of the research method employed.

Le rôle de l’argumentation dans le développement du militantisme environnementaliste : Le cas des conflits autour de l’aménagement hydro-électrique de l’étang de Berre (2004-2007) / The Role of Argumentation in Tyhe Development Environmentalist Activism : The case of the conflicts related to the Etang de Berre’s hydro-electric planning (2004-2007)

Allouche, Aurélien 27 November 2013 (has links)
This work questions how far and by what processes the constraint made to the social actors who are opposing an industrial or urban development project to argue their refusal can incidentally contribute to the dissemination of the values, beliefs and principals of the environmentalist activism. Following a simmelian analysis perspective, this work makes converge the interactionist and cognitive dimensions of the planning conflicts. By this way we aim to understand how the properties of arguments and group commitments may gradually lead actors initially engaged to oppose a development project due to personal reasons to assume and promote environmentalist contents defended for themselves and beyond the initial development conflict. We propose an analytical model of the role of argumentation in the development of environmentalist activism when individuals decide to constitute a group in order to oppose a development project by means of a common argumentation. This model is made from the simmelian aspects of the works of Bernard Groethuysen and Mikhail Bakhtin. The field study of this work is consituted by the conflicts arising from the construction of a hydroelectric power station at Saint-Chamas (Bouches-du-Rhône) which converted the Berre lagoon into the point fall of one of the leading french hydroelectric chains. During these conflicts, the progression of argumentation and the interactions involved in the argument process allow the expansion of the mobilization to various environmental issues and the defense of new ecosystems.
