Stroj na americký sen: Protisystémová fikce Coovera, Thompsona, Burroughse, a Acker / The American Dream Machine: Anti-Systemic Fictions of Coover, Thompson, Burroughs, and AckerNovická, Tereza January 2017 (has links)
Thesis Abstract The thesis examines manifestations of transgression in Robert Coover's The Public Burning (1977), Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream (1971), William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch (1959) and The Nova Trilogy (1961-1967), and Kathy Acker's Empire of the Senseless (1988) on a structural and thematic level. Georges Bataille's theory of escalated excess and Michel Foucault's theory of the transgression-limit power dynamics, outlined in Chapter One, provide the theoretical framework through which the texts are analyzed, as through concepts of the spectacle, the carnival, taboo, and the Situationist détournement practice. The nature of the American Dream Machine is explored in regards to its chief components of control; the American war on abstractions, American exceptionalism, and the American Dream, examined through their contradictory connotations and historical relevance. The thesis proposes that despite their anti- systemic drive, the selected texts are complicit with and dependent on the American Dream Machine in perpetuating their power play. In Chapter Two, the hyperbolization of American Cold War propaganda rhetoric is analyzed in Coover's The Public Burning. Chapter Three details Thompson's gonzo writing against the...

Growth characteristics and freezing tolerance of Zoysiagrass cultivars and experimental progenyOkeyo, David Odiwuor January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Horticulture, Forestry, and Recreation
Resources / Jack D. Fry / ‘Meyer’ zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) has been the predominant cultivar in the transition zone of the U.S. since its release in 1952, primarily because of its good freezing tolerance. However, it is slow to establish and recover after sod harvest, and has poor shade tolerance. I evaluated ‘Meyer’, some commonly used cultivars, and 18 progeny from crosses of ‘Emerald’ (Z. japonica × Z. tenuifolia Willd. ex Thiele) × Z. japonica or Z. matrella (L.) Merr. × Z. japonica for stolon growth characteristics; sod tensile strength and recovery after harvest; shade resistance; freezing tolerance and its relationship to autumn color retention; and the potential influence of dehydrin and chitinase gene expression in freezing tolerance. After planting vegetative plugs, rates of stolon initiation (r = 0.66 in 2007, r = 0.94 in 2008) and elongation (r = 0.66 in 2007, r = 0.53 in 2008) were positively correlated (P < 0.05) with zoysiagrass coverage. At 60 days after sod harvest, recovery growth coverage ranged from 17% to 97% and a progeny from Z. matrella × Meyer (97% coverage) demonstrated superior sod recovery growth to Meyer (38% coverage). Under 68% silver maple (Acer saccharinum L.) tree shade, stolon number was reduced 38 to 95% and stolon length 9 to 70% compared to turf in full sun. Several progeny from crosses between Emerald or a Z. matrella x Z. japonica produced more and/or longer stolons than Meyer in the shade, suggesting potential for increased shade tolerance. Autumn color in October and November, 2007 was positively correlated (r = 0.44 and r = 0.58, P < 0.01) with the lethal temperature killing 50% of tillers (LT50) in December, 2007. All grasses except Cavalier and one progeny were equivalent to Meyer in freezing tolerance with LT50s ranging from -0.2 to -12.2 oC. Dehydrin-like (11.9, 23, 44.3, and 66.3 kDa) and chitinase (26.9 kDa) gene expression increased with cold acclimation and was similar among all grasses.
In general, some new zoysiagrass progeny exhibited superior growth and/or stress tolerances compared to Meyer, which bodes well for potential release of a new cultivar for use in the transition zone.

Island biogeography of young land uplift islands - viewed through the lens of bryophytes in a northern Swedish archipelago / Öbiogeografi hos unga landhöjningsöar - betraktad ur ett mossperspektiv.Karlsson Tiselius, Andreas January 2016 (has links)
Increasing habitat fragmentation and rapid global warming is changing the conditions for species populations and ecological communities around the world. This presents challenges for the maintenance of biodiversity and a dominant paradigm for conservation in fragmented habitats is given by island biogeography and metapopulation (or metacommunity) ecology. In this thesis I approach key concepts (area, connectivity and community assembly) in island biogeography and metacommunity ecology within the context of a dynamic land uplift archipelago. The presented work consists of two interwoven themes: (i) A methodological theme in which statistical approaches are developed to deal with the complexities of multispecies dynamic systems, and (ii) an applied theme dealing with community assembly and island biogeography of bryophytes on young land uplift islands. To describe island connectivity for entire species assemblages, an approach using functional principal component analysis (fPCA) on patch connectivity functions (the connectivity of an island as a continuous function of a variable representing the spatial scale of species dispersal capacities) was developed. In addition, a new statistical method, functional co-inertia analysis (fCoIA), for analyzing co-variation between multivariate species data and continuous functions was developed and applied to the relation between bryophyte species incidences and the island age/area-dynamics. Primarily asexual bryophyte species are dispersal limited and presence probabilities are related to island connectivity. No such patterns were found for species, at least occasionally, producing spores. Our results suggest that bryophyte dispersal is regulated by the contribution of spores to a regional spore rain and that bryophyte species with low spore output at the landscape level may be extra vulnerable under habitat fragmentation and loss. Having specialized asexual propagules increases the presence probabilities on islands, partly compensating for the dispersal limitation in asexual species. This suggests a trade-off between dispersal and establishment capacity, but also points to the importance of local dispersal for maintaining populations under the succession driven spatial turnover of microsites on the islands. Bryophyte colonization is strongly limited by habitat availability when a given habitats is rare, but there seems to exist a threshold over which other processes (e.g. dispersal limitation) become more important. Species with more vagile life history strategies appear to be stronger affected by the area of available habitats than many perennial species

Do good walls make good neighbors? the sacred and the secular in religion clause jurisprudenceMcCormick, William Alvin 05 November 2010 (has links)
In deliberating on the application of the Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses of the United States Constitution’s First Amendment, the Supreme Court since 1947 has consistently failed to develop a principled distinction between religion and non-religion. This has hampered its ability to respond to developing challenges in Religion Clauses jurisprudence and to interpret those clauses in a systematic manner. Its recourse to facile characterizations of secularism and pluralism has exacerbated this problem. Attending to incoherence in the Court’s understanding of religion points to a definition of religion based in revelation and grounded not in the language of preference, identity or value, but in natural law and metaphysics. / text

Mapping of Sonoran Desert Vegetation Communities and Spatial Distribution Differences of Larrea Tridentata Seed Density in Relation to Ambrosia Dumosa and Ambrosia Deltoidea, San Cristobal Valley, ArizonaShepherd, Ashley Lauren January 2011 (has links)
Vegetation in the San Cristobal Valley of Barry M. Goldwater Range-East was mapped using a combination of field surveys and aerial imagery interpretation to contribute to ongoing inventory of natural resources for the BMGR-East as well as assist in resource management decisions. Eighteen vegetation associations were identified and mapped through collection of 186 samples to characterize vegetation associations. The most common vegetation association was Larrea tridentata monotype, covering 29% of the area mapped. Larrea tridentata is a widely spread shrub throughout the Sonoran, Chihuahuan and Mojave deserts; therefore understanding germination and seedling survival patterns is crucial. Ambrosia dumosa and A. deltoidea exhibit nurse plant-protégé interactions with L. tridentata. Seed density of L. tridentata was studied under Ambrosia species to determine factors controlling germination and seedling density. As expected seed density was greater under Ambrosia canopy than areas with no canopy. Ambrosia species and canopy type did not affect seed density.

Lawn as Ecological and Cultural Phenomenon; Understanding of Social, Cultural and Regulatory Motives for Establishment and Management of Lawns in UppsalaEshraghi, Hajar January 2014 (has links)
Lawn is a homogenized element of modern urban green space. Due to historical and cultural characteristics of Swedish urban planning, lawns are the main common typology in Uppsala (77.3%). Despite the strong attachment of Uppsala people to green carpets, the multibillion lawn industry is highly costly in terms of maintenance and management. It is also a source of pollution due to excessive mowing regime. In this research, social, cultural and regulatory motives behind establishment and management of Uppsala lawns among different stakeholders were researched and discussed through a transdisciplinary approach. In the light of three pillars of sustainability, I had a closer look at management and establishment of lawns in Uppsala municipality and Uppsala’s housing corporation. It was found out that social and recreational aspects of lawns are very much appreciated among all respondents. However, economical and environmental aspects of lawns are barley discussed among planners, managers and politicians and they are under the veil of social values. This research also found out that there is a strong attachment of general public to lawns. It can be explained by lacking of ecological knowledge and environmental understanding about the real role of lawns in urban biodiversity. One of the goals of my research was to find sustainable alternative solutions to the conventional lawns that can be implemented on city and neighbourhood scale as well as to educate public and professionals about importance of lawn’s biodiversity. / LAWN project

During recent years the influx of refugees has increased in Sweden where many individuals have applied for asylum in the country. Refugees that have received permanent residence permits in Sweden have begun demanding integration and establishment processes. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore through a salutogenic perspective refugees experiences of settling in a new country. Data was collected using semistructured interviews with five participants registered in a job preparatory organization. The material was analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Five themes were identified: Manageability, Activity and Occupation, Comprehensibility, Incentive and Motivation for a life in Sweden and Social contact. The results were discussed in relation to Antonovsky’s Sense of Coherence (SOC), Locus of control and previous research. Proposals for interventions in the establishment process were to let refugees receive access to social contexts through occupation and Swedish language studies and to explore the value-systems among refugees in order to find their life incentives. The conclusion was that security and social community are necessary for refugees, and when those needs are accommodated a receptability for development is formed which increases health and well-being as a result.

Institut stálé provozovny v daňovém právu / The institution of a permanent establishment in tax lawVaněk, Marek January 2015 (has links)
1 Abstract Title: The concept of the permanent establishment in the tax law Author: Marek Vaněk Supervisor: JUDr. Petr Kotáb, Ph.D. This thesis analyses the law concept of the permanent establishment, mainly the legislation contained in the OECD Model Tax Convention and in the Income Tax Act. The first part of the thesis analyses the types of permanent establishment (fixed, building and construction sites, service-based, agent-based and permanent establishment of the shareholders of partnerships and limited partnerships), separately according the OECD Model Tax Convention and according to the Income Tax Act. The thesis also analyses subsequent sources of law. The thesis includes a detailed analysis of conditions which are necessary for the existence of the permanent establishment, inclusive examples, including information of the Ministry of finance and the General Financial Directorate that have impact on the permanent establishment treatment. Furthermore, the thesis deals with the determination of the tax residency of persons and legal bodies which is a significant factor for the application of bilateral double taxation treaties (mainly with the circumstances of the existence of the permanent establishment), including the issues connected with proving of the tax residency of the tax transparent entities....
