The First Year Experience on an Urban Campus: A Case Study Exploring the Impact of First Year Programs on Student Perceptions of Belonging, Adjustment, Success, and Support

Chu, Zduy 13 May 2016 (has links)
First-year experience programs on college and university campuses are designed to support the academic, social, and institutional transition needs of the first-year student. Retention on campuses has been an issue that educational leaders have been addressing for many years. On average, approximately 20% to 30% of first-year students will not return for the second year. A review of the literature shows that there is a positive impact of such programs on a student’s achievement and retention on college campuses. It also reflects the various factors outside of an institution’s control that can have an impact on the student’s achievement. This qualitative study included one case study that analyzed the experiences of thirteen (13) first-year students who participated in a first-year experience program consisting of an extended orientation camp and an intentional programming model on large, public, 4-year, urban campus in the Southern United States. Findings and discussion from the study revealed: (a) the perceptions of impact that first-year programs have on a student’s belonging, adjustment, success, and support after the first semester of college; and (b) common themes and trends throughout the first six weeks of the participants related to their perceptions of belonging, adjustment, success, and support. Implications of this study also prescribe future research that could explore specific resources, learning outcomes, and retention rates across other urban institutions.

Eriksson, Jonatan, Svensson, Philip January 2016 (has links)
Titel: Skylta med framgång – En kvalitativ studie om hur konsumenter upplever digital skyltning i servicemiljön Författare: Jonatan Eriksson &amp; Philip Svensson Handledare: Joachim Timlon Examinator: Bertil Hultén Kurs: Examensarbete 30hp, Civilekonomprogrammet inriktning marknadsföring, Linnéuniversitetet Kalmar, VT 2016. Forskningsfråga: Hur upplever konsumenter digital skyltning i olika servicemiljöer? / Title: Signs of success – A qualitative study inquiring how consumers experience digital signage in the servicescape. Authors: Jonatan Eriksson &amp; Philip Svensson Mentor: Joachim Timlon Examiner: Bertil Hultén Course: Master thesis 30 credits. Degree of Master of Science in Business and Economics, Marketing, Linnaeus University, Kalmar, Spring 2016. Research question: How do consumers experience digital signage in different servicescapes? Purpose: The purpose of this master thesis is to analyze digital signage and its affect on experience in different servicescapes, from a consumer perspective. We want to provide recommendations, which are applicable on the organization we have worked with, as well as other distributors of digital signage. These implications contains how a distributor of digital signage can communicate its offer in order to gain new investors. Moreover, the implications also comprehends the non-financial return of investment of these endeavours. Methodology: This master thesis is a qualitatively-oriented case study with a combination of a deductive- and inductive approach. Based on previous literature, the empirical examination has been done by conducting semi-structured field interviews with consumers in the specific servicescape, of which has been investigated. The empirical findings that was gained were analyzed through a qualitative data analysis. Results &amp; conclusions: Consumers are experiencing digital signs as modern and more technological than analogue signs, which leads to greater expectations of signage. Thus, the conclusion of this master thesis is that the consumer experience of digital signage is more complex than what has been previously identified. Theoretical and practical contributions: The theoretical contributions of this master thesis are inputs into the research of digital signage in a consumer perspective. In addition, there has been an identification of the surprise-expected need, which cannot be found in prior research. The practical contributions consist of insights in how organizations can create a positive consumer experience through digital signage. Moreover, it consists of implications to distributors of digital signage on how to communicate this to potential investors. Keywords: Digital signage, signage, experience, brand experience, servicescape. / <p>D-uppsats för civilekonomprogrammet.</p>

Designing out-of-box experiences for older adults : exploring the boundaries of inclusive design

Burrows, Alison January 2013 (has links)
This thesis investigates the Out-of-Box Experience (OoBE) of interactive consumer products for older adults, with a view to improve the User Experience (UX) of a product by manipulating factors of the OoBE. This research emerges in the context of current demographic trends, which see people living longer and in better health, and the increasing ubiquity of technology in modern life. The OoBE describes the very first stages of interaction with a new product, including acquisition, unpacking and setup. This crucial initial experience has the potential to influence product acceptance and therefore determine its future use. Creating a positive OoBE requires an empathic understanding of the intended users, as well as contextual knowledge about current practices. A review of the literature revealed that many of the difficulties older adults experience with technology concern elements of the OoBE, such as complicated documentation, technical jargon and inadequate support for inexperienced users. However, the absence of research on how to engage older adults during the OoBE of new technology reinforced the need for further research. To this end, two user studies were conducted with older people, followed by a design study with designers. The first study explored older adults relationship with technology and their current practices of the OoBE, using the Technology Biography method. The second study used cultural probes to investigate the social side of UX and its effect on personal feelings of independence. Data from these two studies were used to create four personas, which were used in the design study. This third and final study focused on whether the construct of social benefits could be operationalised within the OoBE of new technology. Collectively, the findings indicated that the involvement of other people during the OoBE can be a strong motivator for older people to take up and use technology. Far from impinging on individual perceptions of independence, some older people actively manipulate the OoBE in order to derive social benefits. This research thus contributes to the discussion of how Inclusive Design can evolve through the incorporation of social benefits, in order to generate desirable and successful future products.

Att leva med långvarig smärta / Living with chronic pain

Ismail, Asha, Sanhaji, Eleonore January 2016 (has links)
Background: Chronic pain is a common and occurring disease that creates pain and suffering for many people. The painful experience is individually unique and is affected by many different factors. The insufficient knowledge regarding the assessment of chronic pain makes it difficult to abate the suffering from the individuals. Nurses´ perception and comprehension about chronic pain may hinder them from listening to the patient´s need. The nurse creates conditions for a functioning dialogue. An increased understanding from a patient´s point of view is necessary in order to comprehend the patient´s need. Aim: The aim is to highlight the experiences of people living with chronic pain. Method: This literature review is influenced by Friberg (2012). 12 qualitative scientific articles were obtained and analyzed from three different databases. Results: The result demonstrates two main categories with related sub-categories. The first category highlights how pain affects peoples´physical, emotional, social and existential aspects when the pain takes over. The latter describes how people manage the pain through strategies and acceptance. Discussion: The result is discussed from Armstrong´s symptoms experience model that demonstrates that people living with chronic pain gives meaning to their experience of pain in various ways, which may tend to give positive and negative impact in their daily life. Moreover, the result connects to Ericsson´s concepts regarding the Caring Science such as, suffering in illness, life, and healthcare. It also describes the theory of a person in suffering which can affect the individual as a whole.

Differences in Children’s Experiences when Playing with a Social Robo : a Field Experiment / Skillnader i barns upplevelser när det leker med en interaktiv robot : ett fältexperiment

von Matérn, Gunnur January 2014 (has links)
This study explored human-robot interaction where children got to play with the interactive social robot Romo. The focus of the study was to explore if children experienced the interactions with the robot differently depending on two parameters. The parameters used were thought to measure differences in experiences, attitudes and expectations towards the robot depending on whether the children were co-creators of the robot or merely had playful interaction with the robot. The results indicated that the children in both activity parameter groups had similar pleasurable experiences apart from four additional categories that were detected in the co-creation group. Something that indicates that the group of children that were given the opportunity to manipulate and form Romo’s behavior had a richer user experience compared to the group of children that only played with Romo. It was also noticeable that none of the children that manipulated and formed Romo’s behavior experienced it as direct learning. They saw the learning process more as being a playful experience and many of them expressed that they had taught Romo to do various things. The ability to edit Romo’s robotic motions and behavior, through an easy contextual-sign interface, inevitably allowed the children to understand physical and computational models through play.

Narratives of living with epilepsy diagnosed in adulthood

Brosh, Lisa January 2011 (has links)
Background and aims: The individual’s experience of living with epilepsy is often neglected with the dominant focus being upon seizure control. However, the experience of living with epilepsy is more than the seizures. Epilepsy is an illness that is understood in many different ways and the narratives the person draws from will impact their own understanding, experience and management of the condition. Based upon this gap in the literature this study sought to hear the narratives of people diagnosed with epilepsy in adulthood as told to an outsider with the hope of developing understanding, informing clinical practice and improving support for people diagnosed with epilepsy in adulthood. Methodology: A qualitative approach was chosen for this project. A purposive sample of eight individuals diagnosed with epilepsy in adulthood was recruited. Individual interviews were conducted, audio-recorded and transcribed. Narrative analysis was used to analyse the transcripts with a focus upon both what was spoken about and how it was told. Analysis and findings: Each participant is introduced individually, presenting a ‘global impression’ of their narrative. This is followed by a consideration of the similarities and differences across all participants under the shared plots of stories of: onset; changes and challenges; and meanings of epilepsy. Within the shared plot of stories of onset are the storylines of ‘affirmation’ of self; ‘continuation’ of self; biographical disruption and searching for a cause. Within the changes and challenges shared plot there are storylines of: dependency; emotional expression; ‘I try to think positively’ and ‘It’s like talking about someone else.’ Within the final shared plot of meanings of epilepsy there are storylines of: something ‘normal’; something ‘all a bit scary’; something ‘people used to get locked up for’; a ‘hidden illness’ and ‘it’s not to be spoken about.’ The narratives show that having epilepsy is a journey that has different effects on people at different times of their lives and in different contexts. The findings are discussed in relation to clinical implications; strengths and limitations of the methodology and directions for future research.

A generative framework for computer-based interactive art in mass transport systems

Her, Jiun-Jhy January 2011 (has links)
Over the course of the past decade the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) stations in Taiwan have become open air art galleries: with more prominent and frequent display of various artistic creations in stations, including interactive artworks. However, unlike the audiences in more meticulously choreographed exhibition contexts, those in stations are usually involuntary. New criteria for the creation and evaluation of artworks in these context are necessary to enhance the connection between the audience and the artwork, and to elicit meaningful experience via interactivity. This research aims to uncover the critical factors that can turn an indifferent passenger into an explorative participant, subsequently leading them to obtain meaningful experiences through interaction with computer-based interactive artwork. This research focuses on artworks that are permanently installed in the stations, with three case studies conducted in MRT stations forming the backbone of the research. Field observation was the first step in each case study, conducted in order to understand the fundamentals of the interactivity between the passengers and the artworks. This was followed by in-depth interviews with the passengers and three professional interview groups. A critical Analytical Framework was formed throughout the course of the research, identifying five engaging characteristics: Incentive, Transfer, Accessibility, Play, and Challenge. These five characteristics were eventually reapplied to re-examine the case studies and the content of the interviews with the professionals. The findings of this research articulate how the Analytical Framework can be adopted in future research intended to create the conditions for more meaningful art-interactions. This Analytical Framework will assist artists, designers and researchers in their pre-planning and follow up evaluations of the degree of engagement generated by computer-based interactive artworks displayed in transport hubs. The interest that the outcomes of this research has attracted in the field suggests that the framework could be extended to the examination of various computer-based interactive artworks in similar public contexts. In this context, the framework would play a valuable role in uncovering a more dynamic paradigm used to illustrate how meaningful experiences can evolve in similar public spaces.

Jäderlind, Amanda, Ternander, Märta, Uggla, Sara January 2016 (has links)
In this essay we have raised the question of visitor experience and how this is measured at various museums. We have delimited our purpose by observing the Stockholm county museums. This is to make sure which inquiry methods the museums are using to measure the visitor experience and how these methods are being used. Also we wanted to find out what is needed for the visitor to be satisfied with the visit. In order to achieve the satisfaction of the visitor we have taken loyalty, senses and expectations into consideration.   To collect the empirical material for this paper we have used e-mail interviews and three profound interviews with people who have good knowledge of inquiry methods. With the help of our respondents and the theoretical information collected, we have compiled the results. The result that has emerged is demonstrating that surveys and personal contact are mainly used to measure a visitor's experience. Personal contact, interaction and expectations will help the visitor achieve satisfaction, and thus created a loyalty between the visitor and the museum.
