The Printmaking of Czech Art Informel Author: Jiří Krtička Abstract The thesis deals comprehensively with the printmaking of Czech Art Informel: explores its sources, principles and themes, evaluates contributions of individual artists and analyses the technique of "structural printmaking". The first artworks in Informel style in Czechoslovakia were created during World War II by Josef Istler who belongs to European protagonists of Art Informel movement. In post-war years Istler engaged mostly in painting and monotyping. For this reason it was Vladimír Boudník who became the leading personality of Czech Informel printmaking. In 1949 he declared in two manifestos of "explosionalism" his vision of a new art that he followed and carried out with admirable consistency till the end of his life. In the middle of 1950s Boudník started to elaborate "structural printmaking" - innovative printmaking methods that became a way to fulfil his vision. His work influenced strongly the whole generation of Czech artists and essentially helped to introduce Art Informel to Czechoslovakia against the ideologic resistance of the communist regime. [pt] A abordagem moderna da obra do gravador Oswaldo Goeldi marca um divisor no precário ambiente cultural brasileiro da primeira metade do século vinte. O olhar sobre a cidade degradada, com seus urubus e transeuntes, a dedicação, à xilogravura, resultam em uma poética particular, essencialmente labiríntica. A dissolução do dualismo cartesiano promoveu a restituição do ser ao mundo e cobra do artista uma nova postura. O trabalho tem como objetivo principal refletir sobre o problema da expressão em Goeldi, como fenômeno lírico sempre à margem do contexto modernista, e buscar uma medida do que seria o homem moderno brasileiro a partir da obra. A análise de suas gravuras e desenhos constitui o método que permite recuperar as imagens de energia do artista em seu fazer, sua interação com o meio plástico e, assim, estabelecer uma abordagem sobre a imaginação material, com ênfase nos elementos terrestres. Uma experiência que em Goeldi se deu nos embates diários com a técnica da xilogravura. A associação entre ato expressivo e a imaginação é fundamental para a compreensão da natureza criadora do gravador brasileiro. / [en] The modern approach to Oswaldo Goeldi s engravings marks a turning point in the precarious Brazilian cultural environment of the first half of the twentieth century. His views on degraded city life with its vultures and passers-by, the dedication to the craft and the detail of the woodcutting result in a particularly labyrinthine and poetic works of art. The end of Cartesian dualism forced the artist to promote a whole new attitude. This work aims to reflect on the problem of expression in Goeldi s life; as a poetic phenomenon he was always outside the modernist context and seeking a way to describe the modern Brazilian man through his work. Analysis of his engravings and drawings allows one to perceive artist s energy in his artistic process; his interaction with physical media establishes an approach to material imagination with emphasis on earthly elements. This was a process that Goeldi faced daily in his woodcutting. The association between expression and imagination is fundamental to understanding the creative nature of the Brazilian engraver.

This dissertation thesis deals with the work of three contemporary Czech artists - Josef Bolf, Jakub Špaňhel and Lubomír Typlt. The reason for choosing these three was the fact that all of the artists represent the same generation which entered the art scene in the late 1990s and their canvases can be equally described as expressive, although right at first glance there are noticeable differences in the intervention of the emotional and sense elements which participated in the creation process of the work of art, but also in its content. Contemporary expressive paintings are influenced by the development of art in the second half of the 20th century which is based on the continuous comparing of expressive subjectivity and its negation or intentional application and irony. That is why I decided to illustratively explore the movements which took place in terms of the foreign and Czech scene during the second half of the 20th century in the field of expressive painting. Because the Czech art arose in different conditions, I explored the changes of this phenomenon separately in these geographical areas, but at the same time I carried out a partial analysis of the works and comparisons with the work of the three chosen artists based on these findings. Art Song by Turn-of-the-Century Female Composers

Whereas conditions have existed for many centuries which served to exclude or marginalize female participation in music, many women have written compositions of musical worth sufficient to justify their contemporary performance. Although most women composers wrote works more fitting for the "salon" than for the concert hall at the turn of the century, Boulanger and Mahler are representative of the few women composers whose complex approach to art song fell within the mainstream of the genre. Many of their accompaniments attain a level of technical difficulty not previously found in women composers' writing. They offer an interesting comparison between nationalities and styles in that they both favored Symbolist texts. However, each represents a different side of the coin in her musical interpretation of Symbolism: Boulanger, Impressionism, and Mahler, Expressionism. In addition, even though their styles involve opposite musical expressions, they both show a strong influence of Wagner in their writing. This study includes background on turn-of-the-century music and musicians encompassing the role of art song among women composers. Symbolism is addressed as it applies to the poets selected by the composers, followed by information regarding the specific musical representation of Symbolist texts in the composers' art songs. The chapter of analysis serves as a means to guide musical decisions in the actual performance of the works. The conclusion briefly discusses performance practice issues and the possibility of a turn-of-the-century feminine aesthetic.

Stuart Davis's Early Theoretical Writing, 1918–1923: Realism, Cubism, and Dada

This dissertation provides the first in-depth examination of American artist Stuart Davis’s early theoretical writings made between 1918 and 1923. These writings are seminal documents in his artistic development. They lay the foundation for the creation of some of his most important works, inlcuding his groundbreaking Tobacco paintings of 1921 to his renowned Egg Beater series of 1927–1928, which Davis claimed set the direction for all his subsequent artistic output. One of the key ideas in these early writings is Davis’s concept of realism. This study traces the origin of Davis’s realism to his interaction with a network of ideas arising from cubism, symbolism, New York dada, and anarchist philosophy. In doing so, this study considers how Davis’s notion of realism informed both the development of his style and his iconography in his works of the 1920s.

The thesis focuses on two plays and one poetry collection by Federico García Lorca; El público, Así que pasen cinco an͂ os and Poeta en Nueva York, which together form the New York cycle and represent a new and unique phase in his compositions both from the point of view of content and form. The thesis concentrates on several distinctive motifs and themes related to the problem of human identity; ie the motifs and themes which discuss how to understand the individual or the human existence. This topic is reflected in the cultural context of Lorca's age, demonstrating that the atmosphere of the era corresponded with the author's personal perspective. The interpretation of human existence is strongly determined by the moment of death, therefore, the representation of death in the works and the related motifs are discussed in the thesis. At the same time, the similarity of Lorca's perspective with the philosophical ideas of the era is taken into consideration, with the emphasis on the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. In this context, we also focus on the author's relation to Christianity and the use of the Christian motifs in his plays and poems. On the basis of individual manifests and programmatic articles it was defined as modus vivendi. In the 1920's many principles and ideas were shaping the future, not only for the society, but also for the artistic movements. Poetism featured mainly an original concept of art and life; the authors of theoretical articles were mainly Karel Teige and Vítězslav Nezval. Within a few years the concept of life as a careless game and a source of joy faded and bitter- sweet topics began to penetrate Poetism. At this time, the poetics of Poetism changed from the original cheerfulness and everyday beauty to serious existential topics - the evidence is provided by many works of art. Repetition and the Power of Simplicity

My art consists of the repetition of patterns, shapes, numbers, text, and found objects that communicate concepts in language, science, and math as art. My work addresses aesthetic and formal aspects of the art itself and embraces the process and experience of creating. I use repetition of lines and shapes to create a complex mass of infinite amounts of shapes, which create what I regard as a peaceful gathering of energy. These patterns can be freely interpreted as the co-dependency between everything in existence, which contributes to the changing balance of life. Similar to my patterns, my sculptures fuse several layers of found objects to form a larger structure with the intention of creating a new meaning and life of those objects. The wide variety of subject matter in my artwork stems from a continuous and honest investigation into our constantly changing world.
