Bibliotekariers syn på omorganisation och centralisering : En fallstudie på Bibliotek Uppsala / Librarian’s perception of reorganization and centralized media acquisition : A case study of Bibliotek UppsalaLarsson, Lovisa January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to study how librarians at Bibliotek Uppsala perceive the reorganization that was implemented in 2015. The reorganization involved both a change in the organizational structure and a centralized media acquisition. The aim is also to see whether this reorganization changed the wellbeing in the work place, if the goals with the reorganization have been fulfilled and whether there was a resistance to the change that was implemented, and if so, how that resistance took shape. The main method for this study has been qualitative interviews with librarians at Bibliotek Uppsala. The findings show different views on the reorganization. Positive voices were raised concerning a closer and more direct contact with employees within the same unit. Negative voices on the other hand concern the lack of contact with employees outside the unit. A centralized media acquisition has made the process more efficient, both economically and through time saving. Librarians at Bibliotek Uppsala who no longer work with acquisition however experience a stress connected with the loss of contact with the media, connected to a reduction in literature knowledge. Another effect of the reorganization has been a more unified organization which is perceived as both something positive and something negative. It is a positive outcome for the organization as a whole but librarians working at the smaller libraries experience a loss in uniqueness of the libraries. The findings concerning wellbeing in the workplace are varied. Some librarians experience more stress while others see a clearer structure in the workplace. A stress in relation to different leadership roles is however pervading, caused by lack of communication. The goals of the reorganization have been partly met but lacking in some respects like developed cross-groups, more contact between co-workers and between managers and co-workers. There was a resistance to the change that was implemented in 2015. The resistance was cause by previous experiences, fear and how the change was being implemented. The greatest source of the resistance was connected with a lack of dialogue concerning the changes being implemented.

Video på universitetsbibliotek : En studie kring kvalitet och urval / Videos in university libraries : A study of quality and selectionHägerdal, Måns January 2022 (has links)
This thesis concerns the subject of videos in libraries, with a special focus on university libraries. The problem statement concerns that videos as a library resource have been far less studied than books. Also, videos in university libraries have been less studied than in public libraries. There is also a need for further investigation of how libraries define the concept of quality, and how this issue affects their acquisition decisions. The purpose of the thesis s to investigate how university libraries prioritize in their selection of videos. Three research questions are posed. The first question relates to aspects of quality. The second question concerns the aspects of education and entertainment. The third question concerns the view of physical and digital formats of videos. The main source of theory is Johannsen (1996), who discusses five certain views of quality. The main method used is semi-structured interviews, conducted at two Swedish universities: Lund University and Malmö University. The selected libraries all had (mostly physical) videos in their collections, according to the universities’ library catalogues. The results show that various factors, both subjective and objective, affect university libraries’ selection of videos. Overall, it seems clear that no single rule or definition of quality is enough. One main conclusion is that the quality of a video never can be judged entirely objectively. Libraries will have to make a judgement call, or leave this judgment at least partly to their users.

In the new Library Act of 2014, it is stated that public library supply should be characterized by quality. To investigate what this means for the library, I do a functional analysis of ideas of librarians' views on quality and how they work with purchasing, weeding and mediation. I have chosen to limit the essay to fiction for adults in Swedish public libraries. By combining the basal idea analysis, where I investigate librarians' ideas about quality, with an operational analysis of ideas, where I examine the effects librarians' quality ideas get for the daily work, Iwant to find out the librarians' quality ideals. The material I analyze consists of 18 questionnaires, filled out by librarians with responsibility for purchasing and / or thinning in libraries across Sweden. The analysis is done with an analytical schedule, that consists of a number of opposing ideal types taken from previous research on quality, purchasing, thinning or mediation. In this way I want to show how librarians quality idea and practical work relate to previous quality ideas and ways of working. The result shows two in many ways opposing ideas of quality: craftsmanship, where quality sits in the work's aesthetic, and impact on the reader, where quality arrisis in the meeting with the reader. Put in context, idea number one can be seen in quality definitions where quality is seen as relatively objective, where experts best can judge a work's quality. The second quality idea is often associated with a user-defined and subjective quality. One can also see how it is a special kind of impact, development, that is associated with quality. If we look instead at the operational analysis we can see how librarians, especially in the work of purchasing, promote the popular, both in terms of authors, titles and genres. The librarians purchase a lot on demand and use circulation figures to see what needs to be purchased: that which it lent much. Popularity rather than quality is what decides what should be purchased, except for literature of very low quality that is not bought at all. Also in weeding circulation figures is used; even though literature of very high quality is moved to the magazine instead of beeing weeded. Regarding the mediation of literature, librarians to some extent try to lead their users toward literature of higher quality, but they are careful not to judge neither reader or literature. When giving advice on literature, it is from one reader to another. It is important that the readers themselves choose what and how they want to read. User influence is what steer the work of purchase, weeding and mediation. The librarians quality ideas only to a very limited extent influence the librarians practical work, why I believe that it is impossible to speak of a quality ideal. Instead I want to describe the librarians' way of thinking about the library's literature as a value ideal. Furthermore, I would call the librarians value ideal a customer-driven value ideal, where the user is seen as an enlightened and well-informed customer with both the right and the knowledge to determine what the library should purchase and prioritize. This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

The purpose is also to describe what the libraries assignments are in regard tochildren with non-Swedish backgrounds. This is then put in a relation to the libraries democratic assignment.The main questions are: What are the libraries' assignments, as described in the libraries regulations? How do thelibraries work to fulfil their assignments?</p><p>To answer these questions a survey in two parts has been carried out. The first is a study of the libraries'regulations, and various handbooks that serve as an inspiration for librarians. The other is a qualitative interviewsurvey which took place at three libraries in Uppsala and one in Märsta.</p><p>The survey of the documents shows that the libraries are expected to give special attention to the needs ofchildren with non-Swedish backgrounds. Among other things, this means keeping a varied book stock of goodquality, on all the different languages represented in the area. In Sweden, the leading supplier of media servicesserving libraries, are BTJ. The libraries in the survey turn to BTJ's selection when acquiring books. The librarians however find BTJ's selection of books limited and non-satisfactory when it comes to children's booksin other languages than Swedish. On account of this, the librarians are forced to turn to alternative solutions. The alternative channels for acquisitions they mention are the children's bookshop <em>Bokspindeln</em> in Stockholm,retailers who visit the libraries, and acquisitions during their own travels abroad. The International Library in Stockholm is a valuable resource, in administering book deposits to the local libraries and aiding them withadvice regarding acqusitions.</p><p>The essay's theoretical frames are built upon three main concepts: identity, ethnicity and language. The theories discussed, suggest that a person's language and ethnicity is of great importance when it comes to theperson's process of forming an identity. The identity is continuously constructed in the interaction and dialoguewith others. The libraries can play an important role for this process, as a source of language and culture.</p><p>Furthermore, the survey notices the libraries' role as a democratic force in society. The libraries areexpected to act in order to maintain the human rights. The libraries can serve as an open room for democraticdiscussions. The libraries should offer everyone free and unlimited access to knowledge, thoughts, culture andinformation. They can also contribute to increasing the status of minority languages and stress the value ofmultilingualism. The libraries are also seen as a place where cultural exchange is possible, which is meant tohelp create a base for greater understanding and openness towards different cultures in the minds of the people.</p><p>The main conclusion in this essay regards whether the libraries can or cannot do enough to fulfill theirassignments. In 2011 the public libraries of Gothenburg city implemented so-called floating collections. In floating collections the items are not housed permanently at a specific library instead they move between libraries depending on where the item is picked up and left off. Therefore, floating collections are controlled by the library users. Making it a part of a user-centered trend found within Swedish libraries. Literature both praise the benefits with floating as well as highlighting the risks of unpredicted challenges. In the case of Gothenburg city, the public library’s collection management and development has caused debate in the media. Especially the library staff has expressed dissatisfaction. In this thesis seven public librarians have been interviewed about how they perceive working with floating collections, the benefits and drawbacks, as well as the larger effects it has on society. They express certain positives that mainly benefit active and knowledgeable users. One of the greatest drawbacks of flowing collections is the uneven flow between libraries. It leads to stagnated pools of items in some areas and draught in others. The librarians also feel they have been excluded in the process of implementing floating collections as well as during further centralization of the collection management in 2022. The centralization and user centered perspective have decreased the librarian’s control and knowledge of the collection. The data from the interviews has been analyzed in relation to existing literature on floating collections and with the perspective of following theoretical concepts: democratic equality, segregation, periphery and peripheralization. I conclude that the drawbacks of floating collections outweigh the benefits from an equality point of view. The structures of floating collections do not take the full spectrum of library users into consideration, which connects to an uneven flow of items in the city. Items tend to flow from socioeconomic peripheries to socioeconomic centers which increases the peripheralization and segregation of Gothenburg city. The public libraries of Gothenburg need to reconsider their collection management and readjust the structures to create more equal conditions for all users regardless of digital knowledge, age, and other social factors. This includes giving the librarians increased influence over the collections to increase and practice their knowledge. The librarians should also be encouraged to maintain the local perspective at each library while simultaneously seeing to the needs of the city as a whole. The users’ needs could still be the center of the system without being at the expense of the librarian’s ability to influence the collection. Many users are dependent on the librarians to use, affect and be inspired by the collection. This is a two years master's thesis in Library and information science.
