A study of the professional’s preparation for and ways of managing feelings and experiences during working with young girls with a self-injurious beaviour.

Björndahl, Hanna, Bäckström, Hanna January 2010 (has links)
This study elucidates the feelings and the experiences by working with the complex of problems of self-injurious behaviour, of six professionals. The purpose with this study has been to examine the feelings and the experiences of the professionals, coming up when they meet and treat young girls with self-injurious behaviour. The empirical basis of this study is built on interviews of six female professionals, working in the County of Kalmar. The statements of the informants were analyzed out of Goffman’s Role Theory and the norm perspective on social behaviour. Through the interviews we saw that the professionals act out of the rolls that they are expected to. There are expectations from the colleagues, from the clients and from the community that every professional handles in an individual manner. The way they handle the problematic situations varies between persons and depends on the character of the circumstances. The result shows that the work of the professionals arouses many feelings. It varies what kind of feelings they experiences but they do feel fear, powerlessness, sadness, happiness and most of all frustration. They handle their feelings through tutorial, support from the co-workers and through reflection.

Moral decisions, moral distress, and the psychological health of nurses

Willis, Martin E. H. January 2015 (has links)
The major focus of this thesis is the role of feelings and emotions in moral thinking/knowing, ethical conduct and, in particular, moral distress in nursing. Research has consistently found that the moral decisions nurses must make can sometimes lead to distress. However, such experiences are overly individualised in the literature. An alternative view of the person, drawing on the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead (e.g. 1927-8/1978) and the recent work of Paul Stenner (e.g. 2008), sees human subjectivity or mind as processual and always embodied and in-the-world. The emphasis upon the body draws attention to the role of felt experiences this thesis views feelings as integral to both sense-making knowing and thinking and sensibility or emotionality. The emphasis in-the-world highlights that subjectivity is embedded within social contexts, which include relations of power and organisations of material and symbolic capital aligned with those relations. Influenced by deep empiricism (e.g. Stenner, 2011a), this thesis develops a novel bricolage methodology based on a metaphor of diffraction to explore nurses experiences of moral distress. Nurses feelings of discomfort, a particular form of feelings of knowing , appear to be the seeds of moral distress. Various situations seem to be important antecedents for these seeds to bloom into full moral distress, including certain clinical issues, ethical conflict with colleagues, and issues of competency. Nurses also experience some aspects of their job as systemic barriers to high standards of care, which can also be morally distressing. Such distress sometimes affects nurses relationships, their physical health, and their mental health. Participants have found several strategies useful in coping with their distress. It is argued that these strategies are about altering one s feelings through changing one s activities and/or environment. Additionally, past distress may remain a dormant part of a person s subjectivity and re-emerge or become (re)enacted in the narrations of those past distressing experiences. It is suggested that subjectivity entails an organisation of past experiences in the present, for present purposes and in anticipation of the future. Six dominant thematic patternings, which recurred throughout the analyses, are discussed: (i) the centrality of feelings; (ii) the relationality of felt experiences; (iii) the complexity of morality, moral conduct, and moral distress moral/ethical issues become entangled with identity, power, professional competency, and social relations; (iv) the prominence of power and interest; (v) nurses' lives as afflicted by moral distress; and (vi) life-as-process. Discussion of these motifs leads to a rethinking of moral distress. Implications for nursing practice, moral distress research and the study of feelings, emotions, and affect are discussed.

A man in a woman's disease

Holmén, Linnea, Sara, Kjellson January 2016 (has links)
Breast cancer is primarily a female disease. Therefore, many men may feel that there is limited information specifically directed towards them. During a ten-year period, 2005-2014, only seven men were diagnosed with breast cancer in Halland, and during 2014 a total of 61 men were diagnosed in all of Sweden. Because male breast cancer is rare, men may not be aware that they are suffering from the disease. To be a man diagnosed with breast cancer does not only affect the physical picture of the individual, but it also changes him psychologically. It is therefore important to receive support and information. The purpose of the literature study was to explore a man’s experience and feelings following the diagnosis of breast cancer. Data was collected from three different databases encompassing a wide range of nursing research. After conducting a thorough study focused on high scientific quality, eight articles were chosen. The result illustrated how men experience being diagnosed with breast cancer through four themes: The experience of lack in information, The experience of a lost masculinity, The experience of finding support and The experience of immoral treatment by health care professionals. Because male breast cancer is rare, a greater awareness about the disease is needed, including further research, so that breast cancer will be accepted as a disease that affects both men and women.

Vliv efektu flow na prožívání, chování a zkušenost člověka / Influence of flow on feelings, behavior and experience

Čašková, Barbora January 2015 (has links)
Author of the thesis is describing the possibilities of using games and flow for self- knowledge. A theoretical analysis defines social game and describes possible goals of the game, that could be aimed by it. The paper shows that the game is an important means also for adults. Author introduces the method of experiential learning that systematically works with the game and presents ways to use it as a therapy. The paper describes dimensions of flow phenomenon, which characterize it. The similarities between flow and play are shown and the possibilities for its use in psychology are indicated. The chapter self- knowledge acquaints reader with this concept and with ways of self-knowledge. The second part of the thesis presents empirical research. Interviews with participants of the experiment are the basis for qualitative analysis and interpretation. The aim of the research is to determine if the experience of the game and flow leads to self-knowledge. The results shows that play brings a lot of interesting impuls to self-awareness. It turned out that the flow didn't have to be the sole condition for self-knowledge, experience from unexpected situations or frustration is also a good source. The fundamental discovery was the determination of importance of membership in the group and the need for a...

An analysis of schools from the perspective of teachers' affective-emotional zones

Bryan-Zaykov, Christian January 2012 (has links)
An ecological approach to space allows human constructs to become the primary prism through which to view workplaces (Nespor, 2000; Urry, 2005; Murdoch 2006). Human beings create meaning in their environments via the unity of symbolic actions and generalized meaning fields that gain their social usefulness via their affective tone. The resulting personal system becomes projected onto the world via the personal arrangement of things that are important for each person (Valsiner, 2000; Valsiner, 2005). Consequently, individual human beings constantly order parts in their environments through an affective-emotional lens when they encounter ideas, objects and spaces (Hochschild, 2003; Thrift, 2008; Boys, 2011). I use the emotional labour (Hochschild, 1983) concepts of display rules (expectations for emotional display) and feeling rules (expectations for internal affect) together with an ecological approach to space to investigate the existence of affective-emotional zones in schools. My research questions were: How do participants in a school make sense of their work environment through the lens of affective-emotional zones? How are affective-emotional zones characterized in terms of display rules and feeling rules? What challenges do teachers face when they are in particular affective-emotional zones and why? I broadly utilized a case study approach with a European international school to interview six experienced teachers using an active interview technique with open coding (Strauss and Corbin, 1998) and critical event coding (Webster and Mertova, 2007) as the principle methods of analysis. I was able to label and describe four zones that I argued are products of teacher rituals, habits, feelings (feeling rules) and emotions (display rules); the communal zone, the school zone, the student zone and the teacher zone. I further the notion of heretical feelings and emotions and describe how they constitute elements of the teacher condition. I found school affective-emotional zones are temporal as school spaces have the potential to shift from one affective-emotional zone to another as a consequence of time changes in the school day. I outline questions for future research based on my findings.

Unidade entre mente e corpo na experiência afetiva em Espinosa / Unity between mind and body in the affective experience in Spinoza

Monteiro, Rafael dos Santos 06 December 2017 (has links)
If are body and mind, respectively, modes of thought attributes and extension, the mental and the body experience must be developed as these attributes are and express the nature of the one substance, ie without any causal relationship between them and following the same order of succession and connection of causes and things. In the absence of a mechanism to explain the relationship between mind and body for any kind of direct interaction, the question is how to understand the unity of a essence expressed in two different realities, in the case of man, and endless, in the case of God, without being separated from them, but reunited in the self- producing actuality of substance. This text aims at last deal with the mind and body unity in Espinosa and how it can best be understood through it to Spinoza science of human feelings. With this, intending to go beyond the unit in ontological terms, we will target investigate it on equality between mind and body as they are shown in a certain affective experience.

Economic analysis of contract choice, feelings of entitlement and contract enforcement in relationships governed by incomplete contracts

Marquardt, Gerdis January 2017 (has links)
The first chapter of this thesis considers a contractual principal-agent relationship in an unstable environment. The players are uncertain whether repeated interaction is possible. I examine the role that the deliberate choice of an incomplete (non-verifiable and unenforceable) contract plays in signalling stability and trust. In this model, contractors may privately observe shocks that force them to end the relationship after the current period. Complete (verifiable) contracts, which are assumed to be feasible, ensure cooperation in compliance with the contract. With incomplete contracts, the players make themselves vulnerable to exploitation by their partners. But if cooperation occurs notwithstanding, the contractors update their beliefs about each other’s willingness to interact again. When the agent observes that her partner and herself are able to continue the relationship, she undertakes a non-contractible, mutually beneficial investment. The second chapter is based on the theory by Hart and Moore (QJE, 2008) that regards contracts as reference points for feelings of entitlement. Parties’ ex post performance depends on whether they receive what they feel entitled to, which is assumed to be the best possible outcome permitted by the contract. Consequentially, there exists a trade-off between contractual flexibility (agreement on a price interval) and rigidity (agreement on a single price). Hart and Moore do not analyse the role that third party contract enforcement plays for parties’ feelings of entitlement, shading on performance and contract choice. I demonstrate that Hart and Moore’s results rely on a number of assumptions that can be challenged when incorporating litigation into the model. They assume that trade is voluntary but renegotiation is prohibited. I argue that either trade is voluntary but renegotiation is possible or courts compel parties to trade according to the contract. In the former scenario, fixed price contracts may not act as reference points and the parties feel entitled to the best possible outcomes from renegotiation. In the latter scenario, contracts may act as reference points because of the option of contract enforcement. However, potential flexibility incorporated in the contract is lost. The third chapter provides an experimental examination of the effect of contract enforcement on contractors’ reference points for feelings of entitlement. Previous experiments by Fehr, Hart and Zehnder (AER 2011) analyse and support the theory by Hart and Moore (QJE, 2008) that contracts are reference points. Both theory and experiments ignore the role of contract enforcement for contractors’ feelings of entitlement. I replicate and confirm Fehr, Hart and Zehnder’s baseline experiment. I also run an additional treatment in which buyers can offer sellers more or less favourable prices than specified in the contract, whereas sellers can request enforcement of contracts as written. I find that contract enforcement matters, without being invoked, for sellers’ punishment behaviour through feelings of entitlement. Without explicit contract enforcement, flexible contracts (agreement on a price range instead of a single price) leave sellers feel entitled to the best possible price permitted by the contract. However, buyers rarely offer such a price which leads to disappointment and punishment. With the option of contract enforcement, sellers feel entitled to the price which the court would enforce, even if it is equally unfavourable than in the no court treatment. The presence of the court provides an outside validation for which prices are reasonable and thereby limits disappointment and punishment.

Fatores individuais, sociais e familiares associados à vulnerabilidade de adolescentes à gravidez / Individual factors, social and family factors associated with vulnerability to adolescent pregnancy

Danielle Teixeira Queiroz 10 January 2013 (has links)
Teenage pregnancy in low-income communities emerged as a multifaceted problem that involves a number of factors and indicators that stimulate increased sexual experiences of adolescents, increasing their vulnerability condition. This study aimed to understand the individual, social and familial vulnerability to adolescent pregnancy in a low income community in Fortaleza, CearÃ. Study with multimÃtods developed in four phases, interrelated. In the first phase (1st half of 2009), attended by 15 teenagers nuligrÃvidas, and to identify the significance of teenage pregnancy from four expressive practices using art therapy, whose testimony led to three themes: 1) adolescence stage happy, 2) changing experiences and 3) liability to pregnancy. The second phase (1st half of 2010), seized the perception of mothers about the causes of teenage pregnancy associated with this stage. Through the method of thematic analysis unveiled two categories: 1. Maltreatment among the teen and 2. Violence against women. In the next phase, (2nd half 2010), were seized on the grounds of pregnancy perception of adolescent mothers (n = 17), whose data showed: neglect of family planning, the change of social status and desire for motherhood. In the last phase (1st half of 2011), we identified the individual, social and family-related vulnerability to pregnancy in 136 adolescents. The results showed three individual factors and five family members associated with the genesis of teenage pregnancy, the fact of being married (RR = 4.38, 95% CI: 2.38 to 8.07, p = 0.003), not using condom at last intercourse (RR = 4.81, 95% CI: 1.26 to 18.31, p = 0.0021), low self-esteem (RR = 3.02, 95% CI: 1, 60 to 5.71, p = 0.0014), the presence of trouble or violence within the family (p = 0.005), alcohol consumption by the father (p = 0.039), absence of dialogue with the mother (p = 0.004), maternal punitive reactions with poor school performance (p = 0.002) and ridicule the child by the mother (p = 0.001). Studies have shown that the meaning of teenage pregnancy was associated with financial independence, to truancy and domestic violence. In addition to negative outcomes, teenage pregnancy was motivated by a desire to acquire the young about the society and recognition in your life as a woman "real" from the position adopted mother. Factors associated with teenage pregnancy were directly related to individual vulnerability and social and family environment negligent, which are exposed to these teenagers, since they are financially unfavorable conditions.
