Sehnsucht and alienation in Schubert's Mignon settings / Acacia M. Doktorchik

Doktorchik, Acacia M., University of Lethbridge. Faculty of Fine Arts January 2011 (has links)
Sehnsucht (longing) and alienation were two central themes of 19th century German Romanticism in literature, music and art. Franz Schubert was one of the great masters of the Romantic era to understand and express these intense emotions through his compositions. This paper discusses Sehnsucht and alienation in Schubert’s settings of the Mignon songs from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s novel Wilhelm Meisters Lehjahre (Master William’s Apprenticeship). Mignon, a secondary character in this novel, is a prime example of one who experiences these emotions and whose principal medium of expressing herself is through her five songs. My thesis focuses on how Schubert portrays Mignon’s longing through use of dissonance, harmonic progressions, melodic contour and shifts in vocal register. / iv, 46 leaves ; 29 cm

Alciphron, Letters of the Courtesans : Edited with Introduction, Translation and Commentary

Granholm, Patrik January 2012 (has links)
This dissertation aims at providing a new critical edition of the fictitious Letters of the Courtesans attributed to Alciphron (late 2nd or early 3rd century AD). The first part of the introduction begins with a brief survey of the problematic dating and identification of Alciphron, followed by a general overview of the epistolary genre and the letters of Alciphron. The main part of the introduction deals with the manuscript tradition. Eighteen manuscripts, which contain some or all of the Letters of the Courtesans, are described and the relationship between them is analyzed based on complete collations of all the manuscripts. The conclusion, which is illustrated by a stemma codicum, is that there are four primary manuscripts from which the other fourteen manuscripts derive: Vaticanus gr. 1461, Laurentianus gr. 59.5, Parisinus gr. 3021 and Parisinus gr. 3050. The introduction concludes with a brief chapter on the previous editions, a table illustrating the selection and order of the letters in the manuscripts and editions, and an outline of the editorial principles. The guiding principle for the constitution of the text has been to use conjectural emendation sparingly and to try to preserve the text of the primary manuscripts wherever possible. The critical apparatus has been divided into a main apparatus below the text, which reports variant readings from the primary manuscripts and a small selection of conjectures, and two appendices which report scribal conjectures from the secondary manuscripts and conjectures by modern scholars with bibliographical references. A third appendix has also been added which lists all conjectures adopted into the  text. The parallel translation, which is accompanied by brief explanatory notes on names and places, is literal and serves as a complement to the commentary, which primarily deals with matters of textual criticism. In the commentary problematic passages are discussed, especially where an emendation has been adopted or where the present edition differs from previous editions. After the three appendices the dissertation ends with a bibliography.

Vztah iluzorního a skutečného u Henri Bergsona / The Relation of the Real and the Illusory in the works of Henri Bergson

Hollmannová, Barbora January 2018 (has links)
In his writings, Bergson criticizes the scientific concept of time as a discontinuous and homogeneous succession. According to Bergson, scientific methods do not lead to an authentic knowledge of the reality which is inherently continuous and heterogeneous for him. The more we objectify and conceptualize the world, the more far away are we from being aware of it and actually grasping it. The reason for this distance or distortion is our intellect that always operates with a linear concept of time and always serves everyday conduct. Thus it works with the delusion of time that produces a useful but to some extent illusory knowledge. The question for this thesis is how inteligence or intellect meets with reality in spite of their different nature. What makes it possible to connect our practical needs with reality. Is the world we are living in, the world of our practical life, real or just an illusion of reality? And how can we understand the meaning of our scientific cognition in this sense?

The music of Harry Potter: Continuity and change in the first five films

Webster, Jamie Lynn, 1974- 12 1900 (has links)
xx, 800 p. : music. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Despite the immense popular and critical response given to the Harry Potter narrative and phenomenon, little has been written about the music for the Harry Potter films. I establish that the aesthetic differences that viewers perceive between the different Harry Potter films are largely due to the musical approaches of composers John Williams, Patrick Doyle, and Nicholas Hooper over the course of four director/composer collaborations for the first five films. This study provides a rare opportunity to examine the work of different composers for a continuing narrative. Moreover, when we explore how music is used in varied ways within the films, we see how each musical approach shapes film visuals into the narrative that the filmmakers sought to convey; when the music changes, the story changes. Music creates the geographic, cultural, and temporal landscapes that draw us in to Harry's 'muggle' and magical worlds. Music defines the way we perceive Harry's emotional experiences of love, joy, loss, and death, and also defines the philosophical perspectives on the nature of evil and its conquest. Sometimes, the music provides clues to the mystery long before visuals and dialogue address them, and musical relationships (with visuals and within the music itself) allow us to perceive the properties and powers of magic and humanity that may otherwise transpire unseen. Music also plays a role in the types of humor that are represented in the films--from socially-sanctioned transgressions, to macabre, to bawdy, deadpan, and caricature. However, while the core narrative themes in the films are closely related to the main themes in Rowling's original novels, an examination of how Rowling's descriptions of musical events compare with representations of these events in the films reveals that Rowling created a more nuanced social landscape (especially with regard to gender) than is re-contextualized with music in the films. / Committee in charge: Marian Smith, Chairperson, Music; Anne McLucas, Member, Music; Mark Levy, Member, Music; Carl Bybee, Outside Member, Journalism and Communication

Etcheverlepo, Adrien 30 January 2013 (has links)
The simulations of fluid flows in complex geometries require the generation of body-fitted meshes which are difficult to create. The penalty method developed in this work is useful to simplify the mesh generation task. The governing equations of fluid flow are discretized using a finite volume method on an unfitted mesh. The immersed boundary conditions are taken into account through a penalty term added to the governing equations. We are interested in the approximation of the penalty term using a finite volume discretization with collocated and staggered grid. The penalty method is second-order spatial accurate for Poisson and Navier-Stokes equations. Finally, simulations of turbulent flows around a cylinder at Re=3900 and turbulent motions in a rod bundle at Re=9500 are performed.

Abstract: The objective of this work is to study the relationship between utopia and the novel "Don Quixote". More specifically, the hypothesis tested is that the government of Sancho Panza in the insula Barataria could be understood as an utopia. To this end we first seek to delimit the meaning of utopia, discussing its transformations throughout history since its origins in the Renaissance. Furthermore we examine it perception as a literary genre and as a current of thought, using the distinction between utopia and utopianism. Because the eaning of utopia has changed after the criticism of Marx and Engels we sought to clarify the through a direct analysis of two thinkers' work making a difference between the writings of Marx, Engels and later marxist interpretations. After the theoretical course on utopia, we do a brief bibliographical discussion perpassing the top names in Cervantes literary criticism in order to thereupon analyze the text of "Don Quixote", specially the parts of the work directly related to the government of Sancho.

The use of robotic systems in various industrial and logistics situations is increasing. Methods that coordinate the activities of the robots are essential to obtain synchronized and free of collision possibilities movements. One manner to coordinate them is through optimization methods. This work focuses on an approach based on Nonlinear Programming to determine optimal velocity profiles of robots with previously specified paths. The methodology is applied to mobile robots and manipulators models. Despite the constructive differences, in general, the same optimization formulation can be shared for both cases. The arrangement is based on the maximization of the square of the time difference in which the robots reach the same point of collision. Notwithstanding a large number of papers found in the literature involving the subject, approaches related to a nonlinear modeling of the problem are scarce. The advantage of the method lies in the easiness of representing nonlinearities of the system, such as speed, acceleration and torque limitations of robots. In addition, the formulation and resolution complexity is reduced compared to other methods encompassing the processing of integer variables. The method also encompasses situations where robots may collide in the form of segments. In this sense, an approach based on the inclusion of fictitious points to represent such stretches is determined. The tests were realized in different mobile robot and manipulators systems. The results proved the efficiency of the proposed methodology, finding optimal speed profiles that determine trajectories without accidents. Comparisons with Mixed Integer Linear Programming, widely used for this purpose, proved the superiority of the proposed technique with respect to the complexity and modeling of nonlinearities, bringing the model closer to real systems.

Contribuição ao estudo do sistema de crédito em \'O Capital\' de Karl Marx / Contribution to the study about credit system analysis in Karl Marx\'s Capital

Caio Roberto Bourg de Mello 30 July 2007 (has links)
This research intents to situate credit system analysis in Karl Marx\'s Capital conceptual presentation and, therefore, discusses some questions about Marxian critical aspects of \"value based society\". First of them concerns difficulties that appears with the abstraction of the State in the total social capital amplified reproduction analysis. Marx would have reduce the State to the condition of faux frais of the capitalistic production in the course of his analysis. In my opinion, such consideration about the role of the State came since the issues from an uncritical acceptation by Marx of the smithian concept of \"unproductive\" labor. Therefore, we recover, necessarily, to the Rosa Luxemburg\'s critics to proposal an answer in face of these troubles inserting military state apparatu\'s and its public national debts. They would have been made up of fictitious capital accumulation, through the permanent reproduction dynamics of the presuppositions of the previous accumulation\'s as a necessary condition of the value\'s self reproduction. This reintroduction, at last, allows discern a new critical horizon about civilizatory \"necessary by suppose\" benefits of the modernization process.
