The Material Distribution Method : Analysis and Acoustics applications

Kasolis, Fotios January 2014 (has links)
For the purpose of numerically simulating continuum mechanical structures, different types of material may be represented by the extreme values {,1}, where 0<1, of a varying coefficient in the governing equations. The paramter is not allowed to vanish in order for the equations to be solvable, which means that the exact conditions are approximated. For example, for linear elasticity problems, presence of material is represented by the value = 1, while = provides an approximation of void, meaning that material-free regions are approximated with a weak material. For acoustics applications, the value = 1 corresponds to air and = to an approximation of sound-hard material using a dense fluid. Here we analyze the convergence properties of such material approximations as !0, and we employ this type of approximations to perform design optimization. In Paper I, we carry out boundary shape optimization of an acoustic horn. We suggest a shape parameterization based on a local, discrete curvature combined with a fixed mesh that does not conform to the generated shapes. The values of the coefficient , which enters in the governing equation, are obtained by projecting the generated shapes onto the underlying computational mesh. The optimized horns are smooth and exhibit good transmission properties. Due to the choice of parameterization, the smoothness of the designs is achieved without imposing severe restrictions on the design variables. In Paper II, we analyze the convergence properties of a linear elasticity problem in which void is approximated by a weak material. We show that the error introduced by the weak material approximation, after a finite element discretization, is bounded by terms that scale as and 1/2hs, where h is the mesh size and s depends on the order of the finite element basis functions. In addition, we show that the condition number of the system matrix scales inversely proportional to , and we also construct a left preconditioner that yields a system matrix with a condition number independent of . In Paper III, we observe that the standard sound-hard material approximation with = gives rise to ill-conditioned system matrices at certain wavenumbers due to resonances within the approximated sound-hard material. To cure this defect, we propose a stabilization scheme that makes the condition number of the system matrix independent of the wavenumber. In addition, we demonstrate that the stabilized formulation performs well in the context of design optimization of an acoustic waveguide transmission device. In Paper IV, we analyze the convergence properties of a wave propagation problem in which sound-hard material is approximated by a dense fluid. To avoid the occurrence of internal resonances, we generalize the stabilization scheme presented in Paper III. We show that the error between the solution obtained using the stabilized soundhard material approximation and the solution to the problem with exactly modeled sound-hard material is bounded proportionally to .

Novos ventos sobre o sertão: as personificações do capital e os momentos da região sertaneja / New winds over the countryside: the personifications of the capital and the moments of this countryside region

Cardoso, Olivia Cirne Lima de Faria 13 December 2018 (has links)
This Master´s dissertation presents one theoretical path to analyze the contradictions inherent in the transformation process of one region (OLIVEIRA, 1977; GOLDENSTEIN; SEABRA, 1982) into a differentiated location zone (OLIVEIRA, Op. Cit.). The analysis of these contradictions is based on the critical observation of the capital territorialization process (TOLEDO, 2008), here understood as the particular formation process of the capitalist social categories (land, labor and capital) and their consequent processes of autonomization (MARX, 1986). Firstly, the perspective of totality is presented by an immanent eolic complex construction, which represents the fictitious capital (MARX, 1986). Secondly, the totality becomes the background of the theorical discussion on how the region (the countryside of Bahia - Brazil) was integrated in a particular way in the capitalist mode of production. Therefore, the analysis of this particular process aims to interpret how the assumptions about the reproduction of the regional social relationships have been reformulated, according to anecdotes from people who have been expropriated. Starting from concrete elements captured during the fieldwork, this dissertation rescues the historical processes that formed the region, from cattle, to cattle-cotton, gold (OLIVEIRA, Op. Cit.) to the planning region, in the twentieth century, through Sudene (Superintendência de Desenvolvimento do Nordeste). Lastly, the analysis goes back to the concrete elements of the workfield that expose the current condition of being involved in an increasing money dependence, in a region in crisis.

Contribuição ao estudo do sistema de crédito em \'O Capital\' de Karl Marx / Contribution to the study about credit system analysis in Karl Marx\'s Capital

Mello, Caio Roberto Bourg de 30 July 2007 (has links)
This research intents to situate credit system analysis in Karl Marx\'s Capital conceptual presentation and, therefore, discusses some questions about Marxian critical aspects of \"value based society\". First of them concerns difficulties that appears with the abstraction of the State in the total social capital amplified reproduction analysis. Marx would have reduce the State to the condition of faux frais of the capitalistic production in the course of his analysis. In my opinion, such consideration about the role of the State came since the issues from an uncritical acceptation by Marx of the smithian concept of \"unproductive\" labor. Therefore, we recover, necessarily, to the Rosa Luxemburg\'s critics to proposal an answer in face of these troubles inserting military state apparatu\'s and its public national debts. They would have been made up of fictitious capital accumulation, through the permanent reproduction dynamics of the presuppositions of the previous accumulation\'s as a necessary condition of the value\'s self reproduction. This reintroduction, at last, allows discern a new critical horizon about civilizatory \"necessary by suppose\" benefits of the modernization process.

Also, the occurring crisis in recent years has been interpreted in the same way. Basically, the initial motivations of this research are these. The treatment of these motivations, took place in the field of Marx's thought. The central objective of this dissertation is to investigate, within the said field, the senses in which one can speak of dominance and autonomy (basic prerequisite for dominance) of that which comprises loosely as a financial phenomenon. The outline of the research was focused on the following authors: François Chesnais; Gérard Duménil; Dominique Lévy; Eleutério Prado; Reinaldo Carcanholo; Paulo Nakatani; Maurício Sabadini (these last three authors are part of what is called here the Victory School) besides, of course, Karl Marx . It is noteworthy that the influence of Victory School is central to this work. Faced with this framework of authors, we sought to theoretically specify the term finance through the development of other categories and more precise concepts such as interest-bearing capital, fictitious capital and parasitical speculative capital. The research sought to understand the connections that these categories establish among themselves and determine in which way occurs the financial autonomy of the phenomenon. For this, we needed a chapter to address methodological issues, which were worked from the notion of social forms , taking inspiration from the book Alysson Mascaro Estado e forma política, as well as some of the aforementioned authors / A realidade atual do capitalismo é largamente percebida como dominada pela dinâmica financeira.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Jair de Abreu Leme Junior.pdf: 2032473 bytes, checksum: 7f47920a7938c6d83c9f8c0e2badac2f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-09-18 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Since its creation by the Constitution of 1988 until the year 2014, the Unified Health System (SUS) has been suffering a chronic under-funding process. And it is this concern, as to why the SUS has experienced a chronic impasses process in funding this work originated. Thus, to be understood the problem of the Brazilian public health funding since its origin is necessary to understand the correlation of forces that engenders capitalist system. Put the hegemony of fictitious capital in the center of contemporary financial capitalism, and its latest crisis we sought to understand the current debate about the tax on financial transactions being discussed in Europe. The debate originated in a need for resources impending that European countries need to deal with the huge public deficits that Europe holds. And so we conclude this research highlighting the importance of bringing the debate when the implementation of the FTT in Brazil, and destinate resources to the Unified Health System, guaranteeing the universality fact that the 1988 constitution calls / Desde sua criação pela Constituição de 1988, ate o ano de 2014, o Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) vem sofrendo por um crônico processo de subfinanciamento.

: analyse du dialogisme diatribique et du rôle de l'interlocuteur fictif dans la philosophie romaine / The Cynic-Stoic diatribe : a conceptual instrument or philological myth? : diatribic dialogism analysis and the role of the fictitious interlocutor in Roman philosophy

Maruotti, Amaranta 09 November 2016 (has links)
The starting point of our thesis is the critical discussion of a concept taken for granted by literary and ancient philosophy scholars. This is the cynic-stoic diatribe, so named because cynical themes would coexist with Stoic ones. Our first step is assessing the accuracy of the widely accepted definition, which makes the connection between the diatribe and a tradition of topics relating to moral popular philosophy. Then we explain our choice to accept and to try to integrate recent scientific acknowledgments which accept the diatribe as a literary genre relating to the spiritual guidance method of the Socratic philosophical schools, with a particularly attentive focus on the relationship between master and disciple. Starting from this controversial genre of Greek origin, we analyze the transition to the Roman period, by first examining the terminological aspect and then the philosophical framing. Among the methods, defined as diatribic, we focus on the only feature which does not appear to be challenged and that for this exact reason could be the basis of the existence of the genre itself: dialogism and the presence of a fictitious interlocutor. We then focus our attention on Seneca's work, and particularly on Letters to Lucilius, where the attempt to create a master-disciple relationship is intensely visible, and in which the presence of a fictitious interlocutor is structurally related to the development of this relationship. Then we discuss the diatribic forms of Roman satire, to reach Lucilius', Horace's and Persius' cases. A brief presentation is finally devoted to the analysis of relations between the diatribe, the Second Sophistic and the religious preaching.

Etude d'un problème d'interaction fluide-structure : modélisation, analyse, stabilisation et simulations numériques / Study of a fluid-structure interaction problem : modeling, analysis, stabilisation and numerical simulations

Delay, Guillaume 31 August 2018 (has links)
This PhD thesis deals with the study of a fluid-structure interaction system. We are interested in several aspects such as modelling, stabilization and numerical simulation. In the first chapter of the manuscript, we show the modelling of the system and prove the existence of strong solutions in small times. The fluid is modelled by the incompressible Navier- Stokes equations. The structure is deformable and depends on a finite number of parameters. The equations are obtained with a virtual work principle. The final system of equations is nonlinear. We prove local existence of a solution to this system, first on the linearized system. Then, existence of solutions in small times to the full nonlinear system is obtained with a fixed point argument. In the second chapter, we prove feedback stabilization of the problem around a non-null stationary state. The feedback operator is computed with the solution to a Riccati equation obtained by the analysis of the linearized problem around the stationary state. The stabilization result holds on the full nonlinear system and requires small data. It is proven by a fixed point argument. In the third chapter, we focus on the numerical aspects of the problem. The feedback operator used corresponds to a discretization of the feedback operator of Chapter 2. The solution to the full nonlinear system is computed by the use of a fictitious domain method.

A numerical study of inertial flow features in moderate Reynolds number flow through packed beds of spheres

Finn, Justin Richard 20 March 2013 (has links)
In this work, flow through synthetic arrangements of contacting spheres is studied as a model problem for porous media and packed bed type flows. Direct numerical simulations are performed for moderate pore Reynolds numbers in the range, 10 ≤ Re ≤ 600, where non-linear porescale flow features are known to contribute significantly to macroscale properties of engineering interest. To first choose and validate appropriate computational models for this problem, the relative performance of two numerical approaches involving body conforming and non-conforming grids for simulating porescale flows is examined. In the first approach, an unstructured solver is used with tetrahedral meshes, which conform to the boundaries of the porespace. In the second approach, a fictitious domain formulation (Apte et al., 2009. J Comput. Phys. 228 (8), 2712-2738) is used, which employs non-body conforming Cartesian grids and enforces the no-slip conditions on the pore boundaries implicitly through a rigidity constraint force. Detailed grid convergence studies of both steady and unsteady flow through prototypical arrangements of spheres indicate that for a fixed level of uncertainty, significantly lower grid densities may be used with the fictitious domain approach, which also does not require complex grid generation techniques. Next, flows through both random and structured arrangements of spheres are simulated at pore Reynolds numbers in the steady inertial ( 10 ≲ Re ≲ 200) and unsteady inertial (Re ≈ 600) regimes, and used to analyze the characteristics of porescale vortical structures. Even at similar Reynolds numbers, the vortical structures observed in structured and random packings are remarkably different. The interior of the structured packings are dominated by multi-lobed vortex rings structures that align with the principal axes of the packing, but perpendicular to the mean flow. The random packing is dominated by helical vortices, elongated parallel to the mean flow direction. The unsteady dynamics observed in random and structured arrangements are also distinct, and are linked to the behavior of the porescale vortices. Finally, to investigate the existence and behavior of transport barriers in packed beds, a numerical tool is developed to compute high resolution finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE) fields on-the-fly during DNS of unsteady flows. Ridges in this field are known to correspond to Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS), which are invariant barriers to transport and form the skeleton of time dependent Lagrangian fluid motion. The algorithm and its implementation into a parallel DNS solver are described in detail and used to explore several flows, including unsteady inertial flow in a random sphere packing. The resulting FTLE fields unambiguously define the boundaries of dynamically distinct porescale features such as counter rotating helical vortices and jets, and capture time dependent phenomena including vortex shedding at the pore level. / Graduation date: 2013

An Intuitive Approach to the Coriolis Effect

Silver, Kristian January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this thesis has been to provide the reader with an intuitive insight into the mechanisms of the Coriolis effect. Apart from thoroughly describing the phenomenon, the essay attempts to eliminate as many myths prevailing around the Coriolis effect as possible. To get there, only a few mathematical derivations and calculations have been presented – the focus has been on a pure conceptual level. Furthermore, delusive textbook explanations have been examined and discussed in case studies. In the conclusion, the goal is reached by summarising the sought intuitive description of the Coriolis effect into one single sentence.
