O gênero Pavonia Cav.(Malvaceae) no Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil

Grings, Martin January 2011 (has links)
The genus Pavonia, probably the largest within Malvaceae family, is represented by 250 species, out of which 224 are from America (absent only in Chile) and 134 from Brazil. It is placed in tribe Malvavisceae, because it has twice as many styles and stigmas as it has carpels. Pavonia is a genus represented by prostate herbs, subshrubs, shrubs and rarely small trees. The objectives of the present study were: 1) a floristic survey and the elaboration of a key for the native genera of subfamilyMalvoideae in Rio Grande do Sul and 2) a taxonomic study of the native species of Pavonia in Rio Grande do Sul, encompassing: a) characterization of the genus Pavonia, b) survey of the Pavonia species present in Rio Grande do Sul, through herbaria revision and fresh collected specimens throughout the State and c) provide means for identification of the species: key, descriptions and illustrations. All the physiographical regions of Rio Grande do Sul were surveyed (20 expeditions and 50 days on the field) and material from 20 herbaria of Southern Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina were revised, comprising 1.450 observed specimens. We catalogued 34 species, out of which 31 were collected and three were only observed in herbaria. A total of 221 specimens were included in ICN herbarium. The species are distributed in three subgenera, four sections and three subsections. Emphasis was given for the description of three new species, one new occurrence for Brazil, four new occurrences for Rio Grande do Sul and one synonymizing. Many Pavonia species are rare, and occurred in small geographical areas. In addition, the loss of their habitat, coupled with the expansion of monocultures and construction of dams, emphasizes the necessity of their inclusion in the Oficial List of Threatned Flora of Rio Grande do Sul.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Marlene Livia_ Toderke.pdf: 2909363 bytes, checksum: a26025efdf39ded65a0d48d74109b25f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-07-09 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The Iguaçu National Park (ParNa Iguaçu), with Semideciduous Forest and Araucaria Forest, represents the largest fragment of the Atlantic Forest in the interior of Parana. Has been extremely devastated over the years and the Park has approximately 185.000 ha, which equivalent to 4% of the state's original vegetation. Rubiaceae is among the ten largest families in number of species and also has a high number of endemism in the Atlantic Forest. This work was divided into two sections, the first being a floristic inventory of Rubiaceae and similarity of areas within the ParNa Iguaçu. The Park was divided into three areas for this study: Capanema, located in the south with Forest Semideciduous; Céu Azul, farther north, with transition between Semideciduous Forest and Araucaria Forest and the region of Foz do Iguaçu, southwest of the park, with Semideciduous Forest. The analysis showed that the areas of Capanema and Foz do Iguaçu have about 80% similarity. In the second chapter we present identification keys, descriptions and illustrations, as well as taxonomic and ecological comments and distribution of the species. We identified 26 species in 13 genera, Psychotria being the most diverse, with five species, followed by Borreria, Galianthe, Manettia and Palicourea with three species each, Geophila with two species, and the other genera, Coccocypselum Coussarea, Diodia, Faramea, Hamelia, Richardia and Spermacoce with only one species each.

Florística, riqueza e abundância de bromélias epífitas e o manejo de florestas de caixeta, Iguape, São Paulo / Floristic composition, richness and abundance of epiphytes bromeliads and the management in caixeta\'s forests, Iguape - SP

Carvalhaes, Mariana Aparecida 10 June 2005 (has links)
In southeastern Brazil, there is a peculiar coastal swamp forest ecosystem, characterized by the dominance of caixeta tree (Tabebuia cassinoides), which represents an important product of extractivism for the local population. The traditional management systems of the caixeta forests do not consider the use of non-timber forest resources, ignoring the presence of many species with economic importance as the Bromeliaceae epiphytes with high ornamental value. During the harvesting these ornamental species are destroyed. The lack of ecological knowledge about Bromeliaceae\'s synusia represents an obstacle to its inclusion in the caixeta management system. At the same time, different species of Bromeliaceae are commercialized in a predatory manner not with standing legal prohibition, which along with the absence of regulation of the activity increases the illegal extractivism in the natural ecosystems in brazilian Atlantic Rainforest. The main propose of this study was to analyze the Bromeliaceae epiphytes species floristic composition and the structure, taking in account their spatial distribution, richness and abundance in different caixeta\'s forests. Twenty seven (27) species of Bromeliaceae were identified. In five caixeta forests analyzed the population of Aechmea nudicaulis, Vriesia rodigasiana, A. coelestis e V. carinata were predominant. The three last species have been already commercialized in city of São Paulo. In general, both richness and abundance of the Bromeliaceae epiphytes were mainly found in the intermediary height (2-6 m) and host trees with diameter at breast height (DBH) > 15 cm. As it was observed that traditional caixeta management has a negative effect on bromeliads epiphytes, were suggested conducts of best management practices to improve the caixeta forest management. It was considered the inclusion of bromeliads in the caixeta management system and the exclusive bromeliads management. From the biological point of view, monitoring during a long period the impact of harvest of bromeliads is absolutely essential to establish the best management practices.

The Vascular Flora of Steele Creek Park and a Quantitative Study of Vegetation Patterns in Canopy Gaps, Sullivan County, Tennessee

Klahs, Phillip C 01 December 2014 (has links)
An inventory of vascular plants was conducted in Steele Creek Park in Sullivan County, Tennessee from March 2013 to September 2014. The park covers an area of 892 ha and lies within the Ridge and Valley Province. The inventory of vascular plants documented 547 species of 323 genera and 101 families. Two hundred sixteen taxa were newly reported for Sullivan County. Tennessee Special Concern Species included Cardamine rotundifolia, Castanea dentata, Lonicera dioica, Allium tricoccum, Cypripedium acaule, and Panax quinquefolius. A single species, Juglans cinerea L., is considered a Tennessee Threatened Species. Vegetation patterns were studied quantitatively by installing 10 study plots within forest canopy gaps and a comparable set of 10 in areas with intact canopy. Plots within a canopy gap recorded more vascular plant diversity when compared to plots of intact canopy when unshared species were considered. Steele Creek Park provides a botanically rich area for future studies.

A Vascular Plant Inventory and Description of the Twelve Plant Community Types Found in the University of South Florida Ecological Research Area, Hillsborough County, Florida

Schmidt, Anne Candace 29 July 2005 (has links)
The University of South Florida Ecological Research Area (USF Eco Area), located in west central Hillsborough County, is an approximately 306 hectare (756 acre) natural area on the Hillsborough River composed of twelve plant communities. While surrounded on three sides by urbanization, the USF Eco Area makes up the western most section of an extended natural corridor that runs approximately 88 kilometers (55 miles) east and north along the Hillsborough River. An inventory of the vascular flora and the associated ecological communities was developed to better assess the USF Eco Area for educational and research purposes as well as enhance informed decisions when evaluating its status for conservation and management purposes. The study, conducted from June 2001 through August 2005, documented 404 vascular plant taxa in 251 genera and 102 families. Three hundred and seventy-eight taxa (94%) are native to Florida of which 13 are endemic; nine are listed as endangered, threatened, or commercially exploited; four are first time recorded occurrences for Hillsborough County; and ten taxa are listed as Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council’s Category I or II invasive species. Eleven natural plant communities and one ruderal/developed plant community were documented, mapped and characterized by their unique vegetative, topographic, soil, and hydrological components based on qualitative field observations. The blackwater stream, floodplain swamp, floodplain forest, floodplain marsh, hydric hammock, seepage slope, and wet flatwoods are wetland plant communities that cover 65% of the USF Eco Area. Upland plant communities, covering the remaining 35%, are mesic flatwoods, scrubby flatwoods, sandhill, xeric hammock, and ruderal/developed.

A Vascular Plant Inventory of Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park, Pasco County, Florida

Ferguson, Emily 29 October 2004 (has links)
Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park, located in southwestern Pasco County, Florida, contains nearly 7,689.06 hectares (19,000 acres) and includes 18 natural communities. A floristic inventory was conducted on approximately 404.69 hectares (1,000 acres) within Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park which included 11 community types. A comparison of those 11 communities in the study area with the rest of the park shows that the dominant community types do occur within the study site, making it representative of the entire park. The objective of this study conducted from May 2003 to October 2004 was to compile a list of the vascular plant taxa found within the study area to be used by the Southwest Water Management District to help in their management regimes. A total of 475 taxa were collected, representing 104 families, and 269 genera. Of these 436 are native taxa, 16 endemic taxa, 39 non-native taxa, 32 county records, 7 listed taxa, and 5 commercially exploited taxa. Each natural community is described and an annotated list of the vascular plant taxa is presented.

Created stormwater wetlands as wetland compensation and a floristic quality approach to wetland condition assessment in central Alberta

Forrest, Andrew SM 11 1900 (has links)
In Alberta, almost all created wetlands accepted as compensation have been naturalized stormwater management facilities. Our investigation of 32 created and natural wetlands in central Alberta determined that created wetlands have steeper shoreline slopes, largely as a result of their primary function as stormwater retention ponds. This resulted in distinctly different vegetation zonation, with the steeper slopes of created wetlands resulting in fewer, narrower wetland vegetation zones. This was reflected in reduced species richness and abundance of wetland songbirds at created wetlands. This study also discusses the development of a Floristic Quality Assessment (FQA) approach, a standardized, quantitative approach to measuring wetland condition, for Albertas Parkland and Boreal natural regions. I present plant survey data from the 32 wetlands as validation of the effectiveness of this approach. This study provides information on current wetland compensation practices and a potential wetland assessment tool; both topics that are directly relevant to the implementation of wetland compensation policies in Alberta. / Ecology

Rissi, Mariana Ninno. January 2011 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The concepts degraded environment and disturbed environment were initially proposed based on the observation of such processes in forest fragments. Disturbed environments, when subjected to agents, can reestablish after the removal of the disturbing factor. However, when the action is more intense and there is no potential to return to conditions similar to the previous ones, the vegetation is considered degraded. The question is: Would the actions that make a forest degraded have the same consequence in cerrado fragments? The present study aims to analyze the composition of the regenerative community over one year in a cerrado fragment located in the Municipal Botanical Garden of Bauru City, São Paulo State, Brazil (JBMB); to provide data to understand the ecological processes involved in the natural regeneration of degraded cerrado areas and the chemical combat as a viable alternative or not to control alien plants; and to contribute to the knowledge of the cerrado flora in Bauru region. Thus, some questions were raised. How does natural regeneration of the woody vegetation of a degraded cerrado occur? Would the chemical combat against invasive alien plants change the development of cerrado plants? Is intervention in the control of those plants favorable? The study area was deforested by the action of settlers, who established there in 1997. In 2007 the area was endorsed to the Municipal Botanical Garden of Bauru City (JBMB). During this period, the native vegetation was substituted for pasture. By two years ago the place has been abandoned and the natural vegetation started to regenerate. To evaluate the natural regeneration potential of cerrado, a comparative floristic and phytosociological survey was carried out in three areas inside JBMB. The first area is inserted in a "cerradão" fragment, free of... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Disserta??o (Mestrado) ? Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Ci?ncia Florestal, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2016. / The Atlantic Forest is considered one of the most important biomes of the world, a hotspot for conservation, and human actions are the main sources of disturbances that change this environment. Natural regeneration is a very important process that acts directly on the recovery and ecosystem functions. This study aimed to describe and compare the floristic-structural composition of natural regeneration in a Semideciduous Forest located in the RPPN Fazenda Fartura in Capelinha-MG. For this, we sampled a stretch inside the fragment (INT) and two sections of edges, one in contact with pasture (BP) and the other with coffee (BC). To analyze the diversity alpha (?), we used Shannon Index (H') and evenness of Pielou (J') and beta (?) through floristic similarity between sections was determined through Venn diagrams and indices of Jaccard and Czekanowski. We developed the species-area curve to estimate the size of the floristic richness of each sections and its estimators calculated ?jackknife?. To check for possible preferences of the species along the sections we performed Indicator Species Analysis (ISA). To analyze the structure of the vegetation, we calculated the classical phytosociological parameters, besides diameter and height distribution. We compared the structural variables through Kruskal-Wallis test and retrospectively a Dunn test. In the total sampling, we registered 1,561 individuals (230 in INT, 588 in BP and 743 in BC), identified in 42 botanical families, 87 genera and 162 species (78 in INT, 87 in BP and 89 in BC). Families with greater richness were Myrtaceae, Fabaceae, Lauraceae, Rubiaceae, Melastomataceae and Annonaceae. The results showed that the sections have high diversity, well above the standard normally found in the literature, with a low floristic similarity. In general, the vegetation structure was characterized by a higher number of thin and small individuals. The sections have different environments, each with different historical use, environmental variability and types of disturbances, these factors possibly were the main constraints that influenced the floristic-structural patterns of natural regeneration in the sampled community. The information from this study showed the importance of RPPN Fazenda Fartura for the conservation of the Atlantic Forest, as well as the need for more studies to be performed in a spatiotemporal scale.
