A Study to Evaluate the Professional Preparation of Texas High School Football Coaches in Regard to the Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries

A stratified random sample of 400 head football coaches was surveyed in order to evaluate their professional preparation in regard to the prevention and care of athletic injuries, Of the 259 responding coaches, it was found that a significant number were not properly prepared when compared to the standards suggested by the American Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. It was recommended that individuals who desire to coach in Texas should be required to obtain an endorsement for coaching using the standards suggested by the American Association for Health, Physical Education., and Recreation as the minimum standards.

Relationship Between Winning Percentage and Perceived Burnout Among Varsity Male Head High School Football Coaches in Texas

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the effects of winning percentage and specific demographic data on the perceived burnout of varsity male head high school football coaches within the public secondary schools of Texas. Data were obtained from 226 varsity head high school football coaches during the 1990-1991 school year in Texas. Instruments used were the Maslach Burnout Inventory and a personal demographic data sheet. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient were used. Significance was set at .05. A relationship was found between burnout and career winning percentage, age, years as a coach, salary, coaching preparation, and school enrollment.

The factors involved in the job performance evaluation of NCAA Division I-A and Division III head football coaches : a comparative study

The purpose of this paper was to gather information from college athletic directors from Division I-A and Division III institutions concerning the factors that they deem the most and least important in evaluating their institution's head football coach for job retention. The study identified 10 factors that are instrumental in evaluating head football coaches. Athletic directors prioritized these 10 factors in order of importance when evaluating their head football coach.Surveys were sent to 106 Division I-A athletic directors and 106 Division III athletic directors. Of the 151 surveys returned, 47 from Division I-A athletic directors and 67 from Division III athletic directors were deemed usable.The surveys revealed that Division I-A athletic directors primarily evaluate their head football coaches by win/loss percentage and compliance with NCAA rules. Of the ten factors selected for this study, public relations and organizational skills were considered the least important factors in their evaluation process. For Division III athletic directors, the primary factors of evaluation for their head football coaches were knowledge of the sport, loyalty to the institution, and serving as a role model for student-athletes. The least important factors were win/loss percentage and public relations.These findings suggest that the philosophy of athletics for each of these two levels is quite different. Head football coaches at the Division I-A level are expected to win games to maintain their jobs while Division III coaches do not experience the same pressure to win. Differences in the evaluation factors are illustrated for each level of collegiate athletics and understanding these differences may better guide aspiring young coaches who are pursuing a career in college football coaching. / School of Physical Education

Studiens syfte var att beskriva kvinnors upplevelse av stress och copingstrategier i det ideella ledarskapet. Deltagarna var kvinnor med flera års erfarenhet av ideellt ledarskap. Semi-strukturerade intervjuer genomfördes (M=46 min) på åtta deltagare, transkriberades och analyserades med hjälp av principer för tematisk analys. Fyra huvudtema identifierades, Otydlig rollfördelning skapar överbelastning, Ifrågasättande från olika håll skapar tvivel, Ordning och reda skapar kontroll och Kommunikation bidrar till stöd. Därtill identifierades sju undertema, Se alla spelare på och utanför planen, Administration - ett nödvändigt ont, Tvivel från utomstående, Inre tvivel på egen kapacitet, Ledarstabens vilja att hjälpa, Egna familjen – en del av livspusslet och Föräldrar till undsättning. Huvudtema och undertema har bidragit till att svara på studiens två frågeställningar. Det finns flera skäl till att kvinnor som ideella ledare upplever stress och en effektiv copingstrategi antas leda till att fler kvinnor stannar kvar som ideell ledare inom idrotten och bidrar till föreningsmiljön där barn och ungdomar växer upp och utvecklas till goda hälsosamma samhällsmedborgare. / The study aims to describe women's experience of stress and coping in non-profit leadership. The participants were women with several years of experience as non-profit coaches. Eight semistructured interviews were conducted (M=46 min), transcribed, and analyzed using principles of thematic analysis. Four primary themes were identified, Unclear role creates overload, Questions from different parts create doubt, Scheduling creates control, and Communication contributes support. In addition, seven secondary themes were identified, Acknowledging all players on and off the pitch, Administration - the necessary harm, Doubts from outside, Inner doubts of own capacity, Colleague’s willingness to help, The own family – part of life puzzle, and Parents come to rescue. Primary themes and secondary themes have contributed to answering the two questions of the study. There are several reasons why non-profit women coaches experience stress and an effective coping strategy is assumed to lead to more women remaining as non-profit leaders in sports and contributingto the associations' environment where children and adolescents grow up and develop into healthy citizens.

“No this will not work out to combine with the rest of my life” : the Career Development of Female Football Elite Coaches in Sweden

The aim of this study was to explore the career development of Swedish female elite football coaches, how they have experienced their journey as a coach, what have been perceived as prosperities and adversities, how that has affected and been handled by the participants. Collecting the data by low-structured interviews, thus the participants got to describe their journey, in chronological order, following a couple of key questions. The participants consisted of 12 Swedish elite female women football coaches. The analyzing method used was a reflexive thematic analysis. The data analysis resulted in three main themes: Beginning - From player-to-coach transition, Continuation - Searching for sustainability and, Today - Making decisions for the future. These in turn have sub-themes that explain the participants' different experiences from their journey, for example challenges and strategies. The primary conclusion made was that sustainability among the participants was of great importance for their journeys. Implications that the study can contributed to are new knowledge for future female coaches, sports organizations and how they can work to facilitate and create a more sustainable journey, to, eventually, making the profession more attractive.
