It is a descriptive cross-sectional study performed in nine ILPIs registered by Health Surveillance, where forty-three care providers, technical supervisors and coordinators were interviewed. Technical questions were applied in order to evaluate the care providers’ knowledge concerning care provision to older individuals, and the Katz scale was used to analyze the older sheltered individuals’ level of dependence to perform activities of daily living. Most care providers were high-school graduates, but 34.9% had not completed elementary-school education. Additionally, 58.1% had health-care qualifications, and 9.3% had attended specific courses on older people’s health. The major difficulties reported by the care providers were related to work conditions and organization, particularly to the lack of human resources and of technical and/or psychological skills to deal with the older individuals in the presence of stress and deficiency of leisure activities. However, the need for training is not perceived as a priority. Results showed lack of knowledge concerning basic care, particularly as regards the belief in myths and stereotypes regarding older persons and the ageing process, which shows the importance of the expansion of gerontological content in the curricula of specialized programs as well as the establishment of criteria for health care provider jobs with more strict criteria in hiring processes. Difficulties concerning the referral and counter-referral of older individuals and the lack of a social-support network were also reported by the professionals in charge or coordinators, suggesting the need for better integration of services with a clear definition of responsibilities. Kvinnor som stödjer närstående äldre och Kvinnornas syn på frivillighet / Women as Family care to older relatives and the women’s view on voluntarinessLarsson, Linnea January 2024 (has links)
The aim of the study is to describe women’s view on voluntariness in family care and what formal care can help them in their wants. The study is viewing the results from both a family care perspective and a formal care perspective. The study is split into two sub-studies to better understand the data and give a broader view of the problem. The data from the first sub-study is collected through a survey shared on social media. The survey has collected answers from women who preform family care and is split up into both estimation questions and free form questions. The second sub-study is a semi-structured interview with an “anhörigkonsulent”, a Swedish work title for someone who helps family care workers. The result presents that the women and the anhörigkonsulent both find several problems with the voluntariness among the women who preform family care and what could help them in their role as a family caregiver. Though both have several suggestions that could change for the women and therefore would make a difference in the view of their own voluntariness.

Individual and Geographic Predictors of Formal and Informal Care Patterns and Nursing Home Placement Risk among Rural Appalachian EldersBivens, Laura R. 01 July 2016 (has links)
A variety of individual and geographic factors influence the mix of formal and informal services utilized by older adults and their families along the continuum of care. This study focuses on a specific rural population in the United States - Central and South Central Appalachia, which experiences the triple jeopardy of vulnerable people (older adults) in vulnerable places (rural Appalachia), with cultural views and beliefs that may negatively impact the care they receive. Using Andersen’s behavioral model of service utilization, Soldo’s supplementation model of care, and Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory as the theoretical frameworks, data from the Older Families in Rural Communities: Personal and Social Influences on Service Use project and the United States 2000 Census were used to examine the utilization of informal and formal care services and nursing home placement risk in a rural Appalachian population. The main goals of this research were to (a) examine the relationships among individual and geographic characteristics and determine how those relationships affect the utilization of informal-formal care-mix, and (b) determine how the informal-formal care-mix is associated with nursing home placement risk in older adults living in rural southwest Virginia. Two separate analyses were completed in order to address the research objectives. First, a multinomial regression model, including both individual and geographic data, was used to predict care-mix. Second, after calculating the outcome variable “nursing home placement risk” via a derived logistic regression equation, a log-linear analysis with a 3×4 contingency table was computed in order to understand the association between care-mix and nursing home placement risk. Results indicate that disparities in sex and poverty level in an area that already suffers from healthcare disparities significantly affect the type of care an older adult receives. When formal care was utilized, it was more often added to existing informal care systems, supplementing them, rather than replacing them. The type of care-mix individuals received was also associated with nursing home placement risk. Specifically, when informal support was the only source of care, nursing home placement risk was significantly higher than when informal-formal care-mix was received. Research and policy implications for disparity-ridden areas are discussed. / Ph. D.

Dlouhodobá péče a neformální osoby pečující o klienty / Long-term care and non-formal persons caring the clientsVOSÁHLOVÁ, Aneta January 2019 (has links)
My diploma thesis "Long term care and non-formal caretakers caring for clients" deals with persons who provide long-term and non-formal care for seniors in the home environment. This diploma thesis is divided into two parts, one for theory and one for the research. The theoretical part deals with the long-term care and with a number, type, economic status of non-formal caretakers. There is also a brief passage about the care benefit in the context of long-term care. One chapter deals with services that might be useful for the non-formal caretakers. The aim of the research part is to identify the most severe difficulties that the non-formal caretakers face. There are two main questions in the research part, " What barriers let to the termination of the care of the non-formal caretakers?" and "What are the dilemmas of the non-formal caretakers when deciding the transfer to a social institution?" There is also a description of the method and techniques of a structured interview and its analysis. The research showed that the most severe difficulties are the lack of finances for the home-care, limited or unsuitable spaces for the long-term care, restrictions of the free time, health problems of the care-takers and high physical and psychological demands. The main reasons responsible for the ending of the care are high demands, health problems of the caretakers, and fears of the future. Another dilemma that has been proven is the necessity of choosing between career and providing of non-formal care.

Anhörigas medverkan på särskilt boendeÖksuz Ekin, Meliha, Dankowska, Katarzyna Beata January 2012 (has links)
This is a qualitative study that explores the involvement of the relatives in the special housing based on the perspective of fourteen interviewees working in elderly care, at special housing. The purpose of this study is to analyze the nursing staff's view of the involvement of the relatives and the presence of care provision at special housing. The study is to find out what can constitute support or obstacles to the relatives. Three questions have been presented as the structural basis upon which the objective finds its conclusion. These questions try to explore and identify the forms of support that can help relatives in their involvement in elderly care. There are opportunities and obstacles for the involvement of the relatives in the care of the elderly as well as expectations of nursing staff on the role of the relatives in the care of the elderly which the following study focuses on. The research reflected in this study involves the care staff and their experiences and views on the relatives who have their older live permanently in residential care. In conclusion, the study identifies similar reasoning among respondents regarding to key aspects of the relatives at the special housing. They emphasizes that relatives are needed there and they are important resource for both the residents and the staff. The results indicate that there may be both opportunities and obstacles for the involvement of the relatives. On one side, factors that prevent relatives from their involvement are lack of communication, poor attitude, different views of relatives and staff about care and conflicts between them. On the other side, there are opportunities that can facilitate relatives' involvement, namely the fact that they need support from the staff. The interviewees pointed out that the relationship between relatives and the elderly is the basis of the relatives' involvement.

The meaning of the experience of being cared for by elderly Chinese immigrants in SwedenMinyi, Liang January 2014 (has links)
Background: The elderly Chinese group is growing in Sweden but no studies about their experiences of being cared for were found. In order to meet the elderly Chinese need for care, it is necessary to understand their perspectives of being cared for. Aim: To describe the meaning of the experiences of being cared for by elderly Chinese immigrants in a Swedish context. Method: For this phenomenological study, open-end interviews were carried out with 7 informants originally from Mainland China and Hong Kong. Result and Conclusion: For the elderly Chinese in Sweden, ‘being cared for’ means being involved in a caring community, to have a mutual relationship with someone who can see and understand their needs. In such a relationship, they felt that they were included and respected. They were being treated as valuable with a genuine manner. They had a feeling of satisfaction, happiness, peacefulness, closeness, togetherness, and wholeness when ‘being cared for’. For these elderly Chinese immigrants, informal care was indispensable even when they were receiving formal care. They wished that their family could show concern and formal caregivers could understand and give space to the informal caregivers on caregiving.

A velhice e a vida institucionalizada representadas pelos idosos residentes em instituições de longa permanência para idosos nos municípios de Arapiraca-AL e Caruaru-PE / Old age and institutionalized life represented by elderly living in long-stay instituitions for the elderly in the municipalities of Arapiraca-AL and Caruaru-PECintra Filho, Darci de Farias 18 December 2012 (has links)
Analyzes in an open and exploratory as seniors who reside in long-stay institutions in the municipalities of Arapiraca-AL and Caruaru-PE represent old age and life institutionalized. Therefore, traces a characterization of the process of demographic transition and seeks to place the impact of this process on the expansion of demand for formal long-term care in Brazil and especially in cities where the institutions surveyed included. Observes how the process of demographic transition is accompanied by a decrease in the availability of family caregivers and how the expansion of demand for long-term care requires a redefinition of the distribution of roles among family, society and state in the provision of care. Discusses the approach of Norbert Elias about the process of concealment of death and dying that would have developed in northern European societies in the course of the civilizing process and seeks to show how dependent old age still produce feelings of shame and embarrassment that hinder identification with the old and the dying. Finally, assess how the subjects represent the old age and the life institutionalized and inquire about the possibility of reconciling the representations produced in the context of characterization of the dying of loneliness that is presented in the Elia’s work / FAPEAL - Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Alagoas / Esse estudo analisa de forma aberta e exploratória como idosos que residem em instituições de longa permanência nos municípios de Arapiraca-Al e Caruaru-PE representam a velhice e a vida institucionalizada.
