Apparition et développement du paysage septentrional dans la peinture française au XIXe siècle / Appearance and development of the northern landscape in French painting in the 19th century

Fourmanoir, Jerome 18 November 2016 (has links)
In addition to the many studies of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais, this thesis aims to highlight the emergence and development of the northern landscape in French paintings of the nineteenth century. Even though there have already been some studies done regarding the Normandy and Brittany regions, it is not the case for the Nord-Pas-de-Calais. This never published before research combined with the historical context aims to study and identify the movement of artists within the region whose artistic culture is dense. This will help us understand when and how were developed these achievements. The study also aims to identify and define the emblematic patterns of the region such as belfries, mills, dune areas, marshes ... The study will use a collection of works, forming a catalogue representative of the northern landscape in the nineteenth century.

Les fortifications ottomanes d’Alger : Essai de restitution typologique et défensive 1516-1830 / The Ottoman fortifications of Algiers : Essay of typological and defensive restitution 1516-1830

Benselama-Messikh, Safia 12 December 2014 (has links)
The 16th century which saw the expansion of the ottoman empire in Eastern Mediterranean, propels the small town of Algiers to the rank of capital of Regency and military bastion of the Sublime Porte, on the Maghreb coast, facing the hegemony of the Spanish empire. The Ottomans who transform it into city Warrior, creates an artificial port, equipped with new ramparts and establish around it, a network of points of fortification, which quadrille the territory and supervise the province. Between 1516 and 1830, Algiers which is called al Maḥrūssa (well kept), remains impregnable by the sea. Its permanent concern for protection is to show the strengthened and continual maintenance of its fortifications. This essay claiming to a contribution to the vast field of research of an unpublished corpus is an investigation into a totally unexplored architecture, on the basis of archives and records in situ. The exploration of the archives of the French military engineering, constituting a fundamental source largely unpublished, will serve as the return of the defensive structure of the province of Algiers. The interest of this work lies mainly in the identification of the military constructive typologies and architectural of ottoman Algiers, which identify the constructive culture of Ottoman war in North Africa.

Ratto, Jean-Bernard 29 January 2014 (has links)
The Landes currently corresponding to the diocese of Aire and Dax, is formed by the combination of the former dioceses of Aire and Dax plus those portions of Auch, Bazas and Bordeaux. Religious buildings of this department are strengthened during the period from the beginning of the Anglo-French conflict in the late thirteenth century, and during the Hundred Years War, and for some, until the mid-sixteenth century. The vast majority of them are small churches for the defense of the village population in a region marked by the relative scarcity of castles. They are fortified so sometimes very elaborate and often very brief. They are particularly affected during the Wars of Religion, during which they are almost all looted, burned and destroyed often in their vault. Their inventory in this department consists of more than seventy-five churches. Sixty-eight of them are subject to detailed instructions, with plan, historical, architectural description, photos, statements, description and analysis of fortifications. Other religious buildings in the Landes, and some belonging to different departments, having a direct bearing on this subject are also mentioned. This research revealed the large amount and variety of fortified churches in this region and their different modes of defense. She also highlighted a particular and rare fortification consists of facades or semicircular porches built in the second half of the fifteenth century or early sixteenth century. The comparative study of these constructions semicircular facade for military use, with the churches against the apse, in liturgical use, still existing in the Landes and Aquitaine, was made to distinguish between the two types of buildings.

Sixth-century fortifications in Byzantine Africa : an archaeological and historical study

Pringle, R. Denys January 1979 (has links)
This thesis surveys and discusses the documentary and archaeological evidence for sixth-century fortifications in Byzantine Africa. Chapter I examines the sources of evidence, noting that over 80 years have passed since the last major study of the subject was undertaken, by Charles Diehl in 1896. Chapter II traces the military history of Byzantine Africa from 533 to 602, with introductory and concluding sections on the fifth and seventh centuries. Chapter III discusses the evidence for the military organization and defensive strategy of Byzantine Africa in the sixth century, looking in particular at the structure of military command, the composition of the Byzantine army, the garrison structure (including the evidence for the nature and size of local garrisons stationed in forts and towns), the administrative machanisms by which fortifications were built and the strategy to be discerned in their siting. The chapter ends with a general appraisal of the benefits that Roman Africa received from Justinian's reconquest. Chapter IV examines the architecture of Byzantine fortifications in Africa, comparing it with earlier and contemporary practice in the eastern and western empires. The tactical aspects of fortifications are also considered, in particular the question of how far their design was influenced by the use made of artillery and archery in the sixth-century Byzantine army. In a short final chapter, an assessment is made of the value that the study of sixth-century Byzantine fortifications in Africa has for understanding later developments in the military architecture of eastern and western Christendom and of Islam. The Gazetteer includes full descriptions (with plans and photographs) of all the Byzantine fortifications identified in Africa, and shorter notes on other structures of more doubtful Byzantine identification; an index to fortifications in Africa referred to by Procopius; and a corpus of sixth- and seventh century military inscriptions from Africa.

The castles of Mallorca : a diachronic perspective of the dynamics of territorial control on an Islamic island

Goffriller, Martin Sebastian January 2011 (has links)
This thesis pioneers a study in the dynamics of territorial control of the island of Mallorca from ca. 902-1300 AD, with the aim of providing the first holistic and systematic study of the known Islamic fortresses of this island, and determining the reasons which account for the lack of the so-called hisn/qarya complex there. The scientific focus of this project explores the effects that island contexts may have on the identity-forming processes of their population and how these in turn affect the socio-political makeup of these ‘bounded’ polities. More specifically, in the case of Mallorca the core of this study is devoted to the relation between the hinterland fortifications of the Islamic period and the island’s capital city Madīna Mayūrqa, concluding that due to the relative isolation of Mallorca’s segmentary communities from their mainland analogues they evolved a distinctive meta-identity which gradually supplanted their traditional tribal allegiances and redefined their relation with the state and political authority in general. Other areas of interest explored here are the use of rammed earth and masonry in Andalusi Architecture, and the mechanisms of integration of the Islamic territorial setup of Mallorca into the Christian kingdom of Aragon from 1229 onwards. The data here presented results from a broad variety of sources such as extensive archival research, architectural and spatial analysis of the 17+ sites surveyed, aerial photography, hydro-archaeology and in particular viewshed analysis, which was able to provide highly relevant results regarding the interconnectivity of the various sites and therefore give important evidence on their operational context. The creation of the viewsheds relied heavily on GIS software (Global Mapper 10-12) as well as architectural design software (AutoCAD, Illustrator, Sketchup) in order to carry out partial reconstructions of some of the main structures on the island.

Vitamins and minerals deficiencies - From epidemiology to food fortification strategy : Vietnam case study / Les carences en micronutriments : de l'épidémiologie à une stratégie d'enrichissement des aliments : étude de cas au Vietnam

Laillou, Arnaud 26 April 2013 (has links)
Background: Food fortification is an effective strategy to combat micronutrient deficiencies. However, there are many critical steps, such as assessing the population's needs, obtaining support from the government and industries, choosing the food vehicle, selecting the right micronutrient(s) and the dosage and finally monitoring. Objective: The overall objective of this thesis is to assess and discuss the challenges of food fortification in Vietnam. Methodology: The following methods were used: a cross-sectional study, a consumption survey, an impact study, a stability study, a cost-implication study, two literature reviews, a validation study, and lessons learned from GAIN funded fortification programs. Results: Micronutrient deficiencies in women and children in Vietnam are still widespread and often overlap. Although there is no consensus on which indicator is best to use to determine zinc status, zinc deficiency prevalence seems to be high. Numerous fortification initiatives have shown that the support from the government and the industry is essential in order to be successful. The Vietnamese government has recognized the need to fight micronutrient deficiencies. Suitable food vehicles for fortification in Vietnam are vegetable oil and rice, as well as fish sauce, soy sauce, wheat flour and possibly flavoring powders and complementary foods. However, there are issues that need to be carefully studied, such as the peroxide level in the oil, the presence of absorption inhibitors in the flour, or the risk of sedimentation in sauces. When adding micronutrients to foods, factors such as costs, quality and safety need to be considered. Finally, fortification needs to be carefully monitored to assure quality and to supervise the effect on the population's health. Conclusion: Before food fortification can be implemented and be effective in Vietnam, a series of challenges will need to be overcome.

Vojenské a politické souvislosti výstavby Maginotovy linie / Maginot line and its construction in political and military context

Formánek, Ivo January 2011 (has links)
Maginot line is one of the essential issues of military history between two world wars. This graduation thesis situates this phenomenon in wider political and military context. The period of interest is between the First and the Second world war, but for explanation of full coherence, sometimes it was necessary abandon this frame. The main object of interest is not the history of Maginot line itself, but everything that shaped the points of view of generals and politicians about its construction. The answered questions are, why did they start to build this bulwark, what were they waiting for and what advantages and disadvantages they assigned to this line. The negativ opinions of political left were also analysed, just as the french interwar fortification school. There is an attention on reflections of Maginot line in civil and military periodicals that together with analysis of opinions of important political and civil persons enabled to answer the question, whether it is possible to speak about myth of Maginot line. This graduation thesis shows clearly that it is very difficult to think so, because construction of Maginot line didn not influence the life in France so much and it wasn not the cause of fallacious imaginations either.

Murus servii. / Murus servii. The archaic phase of the city walls of Rome

Battaglini, Giovanna 23 June 2014 (has links)
The aim of this research is to investigate the “Servian Wall”, a fundamental monument for the study and the comprehension of the Archaic Age. The main target of this analysis is to recognize and, at the same time, to attribute a date to the earliest city-wall of Rome. Effectively, there are still several questions and unsolved problems related to these topics. This dissertation confirms the existence of the circuit walls of Rome in the VIth BC, in accordance with literary sources: the earliest city-wall, indeed, is traditionally attributed to the king Servius Tullius (578-535 BC) by ancient authors. The extension of the archaic fortification almost corresponded to those of the Republican walls (IVth century BC); this matter is considered unacceptable by different scholars, who usually exploited it as an evidence to refute the existence of a circuit wall during the VIth BC.: a theory that would deny, indirectly, the well-known development of the so called “Grande Roma dei Tarquini” / Questo lavoro è iniziato sulla base di ricerche storico-archeologicheche svolgo su Roma Antica, in special modo nel periodo compreso fra l’EtàArcaica e il primo secolo della Repubblica.

Forte São João e o patrimônio histórico e artístico nacional / Forte São João and the national historical and artistic heritage

Nakamuta, Adriana Sanajotti 14 April 2009 (has links)
The present study aim to investigate the typological and historic analyze about Fort of São João, a military architecture constructed in the entrance of canal of Bertioga city, in São Paulo state. Furthermore, an important question was approached here: the effective value of this revision for brazilian colonial art and history, considering her federal protection in the fourthies, from Artistic and Historic National Service (SPHAN).
