Le premier Huysmans et les critiques de son temps (1874-1883) / The first Huysmans and the critics of his time (1874-1883)

Guglielmi, Francesca 13 December 2013 (has links)
During his lifetime, Huysmans was the object of varied and sometimes controversial criticism. By proposing more than 300 articles that illustrate the critics’ first reactions to Huysmans’s work, from Drageoir à épices (1874) to À vau-l’eau (1882), this thesis aims to identify the main themes presented by critics and those who oppose them.Huysmans first came to prominence thanks to his commitment to the naturalist cause. His study of L’Assommoir, published in L’Actualité of Brussels in 1877, and his contribution to the Soirées de Médan, in 1880, are evidence of his belonging to the new school, and critics would soon enough place Huysmans’s first texts in the footsteps of Goncourt and Zola.If a number of critics appreciate Huysmans’s talent, many others discredit him. His style, seductive for some, can be shocking for others. Many chroniclers condemn the immorality of Marthe, deplore the presence of scatological motifs in Les Sœurs Vatard, En ménage and Sac au dos, and even depreciate En ménage and À vau-l’eau for their lack of intrigue and their pessimistic points of view.Few are the comments which recognize the innovative aspects of his work, the promise of emancipation from the naturalist aesthetic and the fact that Huysmans distinguishes himself by reaching his double ambition: being both well-known and keeping his autonomy.

Innovation Gene: the relationship between financial performance and communicating innovation in mission statement

Ali, Ahmed F., Yalta Vargas, Carlos, Fakhouri, Mohammed January 2019 (has links)
Mission statement is important to companies, especially as a strategic communication tool with stakeholders. Innovation is also important to companies and has its implications on performance. This study examines the relationship between financial performance and explicitly communicating innovation in mission statement. The study uses a quantitative approach with logistic regression to test empirical hypotheses related to revenues, profits, change in assets and market value, and their relationship with explicitly communicating innovation in mission statements. The conclusion is that among all the financial performance indicators considered, only market value represents a strong and significant result, indicating a positive relationship with explicitly communicating innovation.

Following a general survey of the critical texts on the poet‘s work, a decision was taken to adopt as a review corpus only those produced from 1951 to 1960. This phase involves the critique of such books as Silêncio e Palavras (1951), Narciso Cego (1952), A Lenda da Rosa (1955) and Vento Geral (1984); the other part was uncovered through searches into databanks, libraries, public domain private collections. As a theoretical assumption, the concepts used by Pascale Casanova in A República Mundial das Letras, that reviews the tensions in the relationships between author literary critic, the notion of national and universal writer, the concepts of modern and classical and the common difficulties of a greater part of writers to impose themselves within the literary space. The background of the different profiles of the Brazilian literary criticism as presented in the studies by Afrânio Coutinho, Antonio Candido and Flora Süssekind was deemed necessary on account of the nature of the research work. The critical works by Álvaro Lins, Carlos Castelo Branco, Emanuel de Moraes, Waldemar Baptista de Salles, Gilberto Freyre, Sérgio Milliet, Manuel Bandeira, Alcântara Silveira, Virgínius da Gama e Melo and Santos Moraes have been included in the results of the research work. The review of such texts unveils relevant aspects of the dynamics of the national literary system.

On the Road to Discovery: Tom Jones and Property

Wang, Wen-te 28 January 2008 (has links)
This thesis mainly elaborates on male and female characters¡¦ interaction with and response to property in Henry Fielding¡¦s Tom Jones. I divide property into two possessions: fortune and liberty. Fortune plays a controlling means to reflect the subtle change of human nature on the matter of morality. Also, the deprivation of liberty shows female¡¦s position in marriage and gender¡¦s equality in society. Either morality or gender issue is a challenge to tradition in the eighteenth century. I particularly analyze how Fielding puts these two issues into this novel and the messages he attempts to deliver to us. This thesis consists of three chapters. In chapter one, I focus on the interaction between human nature and property. In chapter two, I deal with male dominance over female autonomy in marriage. In the last chapter, I discuss the reverse positions between men and women as they stand upon in chapter two by the examples of Jones and his three lovers.

Adults' Perceptions of the Long-Term Effects of Participation in High School Sports

Bechtol, Susan Smith 19 April 2001 (has links)
The long-term effects of participation in high school sports were the focus of this study. Ten top-level managers in Fortune 500 companies were asked about participation in high school sports and the enduring effects of that participation. Five men (one black) and five women (one Asian) participated in the study. Interviewing, observing offices, and reviewing high school yearbooks were the methods of data collection. The data were analyzed using the constant-comparative method of Maykut and Morehouse (1994). Based on the literature and the development of a sports participation theory, data were collected on the organizational and personal variables affecting participation in high school sports, and the sports participation variables affecting later life. Long-term effects of sports participation in high school were identified in 13 areas: (1) being competitive, (2) being goal oriented, (3) being physically active, (4) making friends, (5) developing leadership skills, (6) enhancing self-esteem, (7) displaying sports paraphernalia, (8) practicing sports philosophy, (9) working as a team, (10) acquiring skills not taught in a classroom, (11) managing time, (12) volunteering, and (13) working with diverse groups. These findings may be helpful to school administrators and policy makers as they evaluate the benefits and liabilities of their sports programs. / Ph. D.
