The Lack of African American Women CEOs in Corporate America: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study

Sawyer, Rosalind D. 01 January 2017 (has links)
While the number of African American women filling executive level positions in Fortune 500 companies in America has improved, there is still a need for significant improvements in increasing their access to corporate chief executive officer (CEO) positions. African American women occupy only 11.7% of the board seats, and their representation as CEOs has steadily declined. Throughout the history of Fortune 500 companies, there have been only 14 African American men with CEO titles. As of January 2017, there are no African American women CEOs. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the lived experiences and perceptions of 15 African American women who aspire to be chief executive officers in corporate America. The experiences and perceptions of these women were examined to understand why there is a limited number of African American women CEOs despite their increase in executive level roles. The responses from 15 African American revealed that the increased numbers of these women in the executive leadership level resulted from diversity initiatives that made it possible for these women to return to school, and provided a context in which organizational leaders could recognize their talent. The organizations' use of diversity initiatives contributed to practices that legally allow them to minimize the number of minorities they hire at the executive level. The theoretical framework included elements from critical theory, critical race theory, and black feminist theory. The increased representation of these women at the executive level contributes to positive social change because the information adds to the existing literature on the lack of African American women CEOs in corporate America and may provide knowledge that will guide other women pursuing this role.

William Shakespeare's Parable of "Is" and "Seems": Ironies of God's Providence in Hamlet and Measure for Measure

Kelly, Joseph L. 01 August 2010 (has links)
This thesis examines Hamlet and Measure for Measure as related “problem plays.” In these plays, Shakespeare uniquely combines the genre of parable and the literary device of irony as a means to involve his audience in the experience of ordeal and deliverance that both reorients the protagonists’ personal, political, and ultimately theological assumptions and prompts spiritual insight in the spectator. As in a parable, a spiritual dimension opens subtly alongside each story to inform the play’s action and engage the spectator in the underlying theological discourse. Irony invites the audience to see the disparity between pretended or mistaken reality and the spiritual truth—between what “seems” and what “is.” As these complex dramatized parables unfold, potent tapestries of multilayered thematic irony coalesce into providential irony that exalts, rather than defeats, the protagonists and ultimately determines the outcome.

Defending luck egalitarianism

Barry, Nicholas January 2007 (has links)
[Truncated abstract] In this thesis, I seek to determine whether luck egalitarianism is a compelling interpretation of egalitarian justice. In answering this question, I challenge existing interpretations and criticisms of luck egalitarianism, and highlight its radical consequences. I propose a revised theory of luck egalitarianism, and conclude that it does represent a compelling interpretation of egalitarian justice. In the first chapter, I trace the evolution of luck egalitarianism, highlighting the variety of theories that have been grouped under this label. In chapter 2, I defend the approach against an influential critique by Elizabeth Anderson, who argues that luck egalitarianism is inherently disrespectful, trapped in the distributive paradigm, and harsh in its approach towards the victims of bad option luck. I argue against these criticisms, pointing out that the harsh treatment problem will rarely arise because few inequalities result entirely from option luck, and that luck egalitarianism is not disrespectful to those it seeks to assist, nor trapped in the distributive paradigm. In chapter 3, I analyse the distinction between option luck and brute luck, which is crucial to luck egalitarianism. I argue that the option-brute distinction is inconsistent with the underlying impulse of luck egalitarianism because it allows morally arbitrary inequalities to go uncorrected and because it is insufficiently sensitive to the impact of background inequalities on individual choice. I propose a revised theory of luck egalitarianism that focuses on the extent to which a person's level of advantage has been genuinely chosen, rejecting the option-brute distinction. In chapter 4, I give a broader justification of this theory, analysing recent critiques by Susan Hurley and Samuel Scheffler, who have both questioned the moral foundations of luck egalitarianism. In chapter 5, I outline a conception of egalitarian advantage to work alongside the revised theory of luck egalitarianism. I support Cohen's claim that egalitarians should adopt a heterogeneous account of advantage, which includes resources, welfare, and midfare. ... In chapter 7, I highlight the counter-intuitive social policy applications of luck egalitarianism, arguing that the universal approach to social provision associated with the social democratic welfare state comes closer to achieving luck-egalitarian objectives than the residual and conditional provision of benefits and services that is associated with the liberal welfare state. I conclude that luck egalitarianism, in the revised form I outline in chapter 3, is a compelling interpretation of egalitarian justice.

The Harlay of Beaumont, a family of the high Robe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries

Kašawū, Sihām al- 18 February 2012 (has links)
This work seeks to rebuild the history of a family known as one of the most old and honourable families of the Parisian Nobility of the robe. Its representatives draw their celebrity from an outstanding proficiency in the Judiciary world and sincere faithfulness to the King and Monarchy. This study goes alongside with the increasing rise of French elite collective biographies over the last twenty years. A combination of several factors gave rise to an impressive ascension of this Robe lineage at the XVIIth century. Other factors caused its bankruptcy by the beginning of the following century. This Family archaeology, rebuilt mainly through the deeds of the “Minutier central des notaires parisiens” and the historical collections of departmental archives, examines the structure and management of this family’s wealth as well as the representations of life and afterlife within some of its members.

Although Marina Colasanti (1937) is considered by the critics as one of the exponents of Brazilian children and youthful literature, and having her production, in this segment, published since the outset 1980s until this moment, still is very unsystematic the study of literary criticism on the writer's work. This work takes as object a significant sample of academic production about the literary production of the writer, leaning on dissertations and on theses that analyze the Children's and the youthful work of Marina Colasanti, as those that turn to literary texts that have been priority addressed to adult readers, considering that, sometimes, these two literary universes are shown merged. Twenty academic papers constitute the corpus of this work, it has been identified through the database Capes and the query at physical and virtual libraries of various universities. From a methodological point of view, the corpus received a homogeneous treatment for data collection, have been subjected to a grid (or "chart") compose of 15 different categories that guided the study of each thesis or dissertation. That systematic analysis propitiated, as research results, concludes in a kind of balance on the critical fortune, being possible sight four main topics that concern to the critical studies on the work of Marina Colasanti, according to different theoretical perspectives: the female specific; the myth; the poetic language; and the love.

The challenge of this work is to uncover the true cause of the success of political attitudes, in other words, to reveal as a concept virtù relates to the behaviour of men who lead the politics, a behaviour that its qualities determine the positive or negative results of the politic actions to whom governs it, regardless of their personal or religious virtues. Finding results and extracting lessons, knowledge and examples to be followed, Maquiavelli offers perspectives to the ways of acting in the political scenery. Virtù constitutes and becomes effective only with the fortune participation, that is why the objective of our exposition will be to analyze the relashion between determination and indetermination that exists between this two polos that dominate the art of governing.

Relationship between Fortune 500 companies with regulatory violations and/or criminal offenses and resulting stock values.

Bhagwat, Tanya A. 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine whether publicly disclosed violations by U.S corporations, resulting in convictions or settlements, erode shareholder investment in the offending organizations. This study was designed to assess whether or not the shareholders' reactions to corporations' violations were related to a decline in organizations' stock valuations across sectors. In addition, this study attempted to assess whether or not shareholder support, expressed by stock prices, declined more after a corporation was prosecuted or reached a settlement for violations, as compared to corporations that disclosed earnings disappointments. Also, this study investigated the stock prices of violating corporations compared to the non-offending corporations from within the same business sector, as well as considered the percentage decline for repeat offenders for violation two compared to violation one. Opposite to hypothesis, results showed that stock prices for the violating companies were significantly greater 12 months after the violation compared to the other months and no significant differences in percent decline between the eight sectors on any of the five decline measures. There were also no differences between violating companies and their matched companies. Companies with a violation had significantly greater stock prices overall than those without a violation.

Les peintres féminins de la manufacture Sèvres (1850-1890). Une approche historique de l'émancipation des femmes par les arts / Women painters of the manufactory of Sèvres (1850-1890). A historical approach to the emancipation of the women through art

Mazighi, Ratiba 21 October 2011 (has links)
The following thesis aims at studying all the feminine artists who worked in the Sèvres factory between 1850 and 1900. This period is a turning-point fort this institute on the administrative level as much as on the artistic one, because it represents a new era with the birth of a brend new style.Besides, more and more women working in Sèvres take part in exhibitions and workshops. Some of these women were particularly noted for their skills and their effort, while at this time the whole society was not interested by women condition. That's why this thesis will also throw light on some works with these ideas in mind. From the artistic viewpoint, the study particularly attracts our attention on each artist's specialties, styles and tastes. Despite the obvious global harmonization, due to the place of production of this factory, some differences appear. The first part concerns the artist's biographies. Their studies, their origins, their working conditions, but also their parts in artistic events will be analyzed. The second part will deal with the works from the stylistic analysis point of view and their impact (the fame reached by the artist through the work, but also the conscious or unconscious, direct or indirect message brought by the artist). Finally, the third part represents a descriptive catalogue of the works. It was established with the help of the inventory registers kept in the archives of the Sèvres factory.
