The implications of geometric frustration and orbital degeneracies on the evolution of magnetism in Na4Ir3O8 and α-NaMnO2

Thesis advisor: Stephen D. Wilson / Spin-orbit intertwined order gives rise to many novel phenomena with a broad phase space spanned by the competing energy scales within a system. This dissertation synthesized and studied two such systems demonstrating different manifestations of spin-orbit interactions, originating from orbital degeneracy effects, on geometrically frustrated magnetic lattices. Firstly, strong spin-orbit coupling in the hyperkagome lattice, Na4Ir3O8, and secondly, the layered material, α-NaMnO2, where single-ion anisotropy and a cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion drive magnetism to the quasi-1D limit. The magnetic ground state of the Jeff = 1/2 spin-liquid candidate, Na4Ir3O8, is explored via combined bulk magnetization, muon spin relaxation, and neutron scattering measurements. A short-range, frozen, state comprised of quasi-static moments develops below a characteristic temperature of TF = 6 K, revealing an inhomogeneous distribution of spins occupying the entirety of the sample volume. Quasi-static, short-range, spin correlations persist until at least 20 mK and differ substantially from the nominally dynamic response of a quantum spin liquid. Much of this dissertation focuses on the second spin-orbit intertwined system, α-NaMnO2, where a cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion of the MnO6 octahedra arising from an orbital degeneracy in the Mn3+ cations directly affects the electronic (ferro-orbital) and magnetic (antiferromagnetic) order, which results in an intriguing study of low-dimensional magnetism. Intricacies of the structure, static magnetic order, and magnon dynamics are presented, which heavily relied on neutron scattering techniques. Electronic, Magnetic and Structural Properties of the Spin Liquid Candidate BaTi1/2Mn1/2O3 / Propriedades Eletrônicas, Magnéticas e Estruturais do Candidato a Líquido de Spin BaTi1/2Mn1/2O3

This work presents macroscopic and microscopic experiments of the disordered hexagonal double perovskite BaTi1/2Mn1/2O3, in order to characterize its electronic, magnetic and structural properties to support the possibility that this system hosts a spin liquid phase. Such assumption is based on the absence of a transition to a magnetically ordered phase in the magnetic and thermodynamic measurements, which points to a strong magnetic frustration in this material. In addition, it is observed the formation of a correlated spin state. To characterize this correlation, we resorted to Muon Spin Resonance (µSR) experiments to measure the low temperature spin dynamics. The zero field µSR relaxation regime displays dynamic magnetism down to T = 0.019 K and longitudinal field experiments support as well that dynamic magnetism persists at low temperatures, a behavior expected for a spin liquid system. The magnetic behavior of BaTi1/2Mn1/2O3 consists in the high temperature physics being dominated by the presence of magnetic trimers, magnetic dimers, and orphan spins. At lower temperatures, the effective magnetic degrees of freedom, composed by orphan spins and magnetic trimers, are correlated but no phase transition is detected down to T = 0.1 K, despite the effective exchange couplings between magnetic trimers and orphan spins being -8.5 K, resulting in a magnetic frustration parameter of at least 85. The possibility that disorder is responsible for the spin liquid ground state is discussed, however, other scenarios are not totally discarded. For example, the possibility that the measured state is not the true ground state, which could lie at even lowers temperatures or the possible formation of a spin glass state. This work raises questions that are not easy to answer. Ultimately, the growth of a single crystal is necessary to continue the characterization of BaTi1/2Mn1/2O3. Besides, theoretical and experimental developments in this field of research are needed to find a more direct and conclusive way to characterize the magnetic phases in this complex material. / Neste trabalho apresento dados experimentais macroscópicos e microscópicos da peroviskita hexagonal dupla BaTi1/2Mn1/2O3, a fim de caracterizar sua estrutura eletrônica, magnética e cristalina para embasar a possibilidade deste sistema apresentar uma fase de líquido de spin. Esta hipótese está baseada na ausência de transição para uma fase magneticamente ordenada nas medidas magnéticas e termodinâmicas, que apontam para uma forte frustração magnética neste material. Além disso, é observada a formação de um estado de spins correlacionados. Para caracterizar esta correlação, recorremos para experimentos de ressonância de múons (µSR) para medir a dinâmica de spins em baixas temperaturas. Dados de µSR para campo magnético nulo mostram em seu regime de relaxamento um magnetismo dinâmico para temperaturas tão baixas quanto T = 0.019 K, adicionalmente, experimentos com campo magnético longitudinal aplicado apontam também que o magnetismo dinâmico persiste em baixas temperaturas, um comportamento esperado para um sistema de líquido de spin. O comportamento magnético do BaTi1/2Mn1/2O3 consiste na física de altas temperaturas sendo dominada pela presença de trimers magnéticos, dimers magnéticos e spins órfãos. Para temperaturas mais baixas, os graus de liberdade magnéticos são efetivamente compostos por spins órfãos e trimers magnéticos, que estão correlacionados mas nenhuma transição de fase é detectada para temperaturas tão baixas quanto T = 0.1 K, mesmo que a constante de interação efetiva entre os spins órfãos e os trimers magnéticos seja -8.5 K, resultando num fator de frustração magnética de ao menos 85. A possibilidade da desordem ser responsável pelo estado fundamental de líquido de spin é discutida, no entanto, outros cenários não estão totalmente descartados, por exemplo, a possibilidade de que o estado medido não seja o verdadeiro estado fundamental, e que este estaria em temperaturas ainda mais baixas ou a possível formação de um estado de vidro de spin. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe what nurses experienced in connection with waiting time related frustration among patients and relatives in the emergency department and also what strategies nurses use to manage waiting time related frustration.Background: The numbers of emergency department visits are increasing and lead to waiting times which can cause frustration among patients and relatives, a frustration that nurses encounter in their everyday work and need strategies to deal with.Methods: This is a descriptive qualitative study. Interviews are conducted with five nurses, transcribed and analyzed by qualitative content analysis.Findings: The nurses feel inadequate and powerless when they meet patients and relatives frustration. In order to deal with patients and relatives frustration, they use the strategy of participation, which implies to involve and meet patients and relatives needs for information and to be seen. In order to prevent themselves becoming frustrated they use adaptability, by creating an inner calm, not take it personally and to distance themselves from the frustration.Conclusion: The result highlights the importance of managing the activity to reduce waiting time related frustration, for example through reflection and working for reducing waiting times. Assessment of fun from the analysis of facial images / Avaliação de diversão a partir da análise de imagens faciais

This work investigates the feasibility of assessing fun from only the computational analysis of facial images captured from low-cost webcams. The study and development was based on a set of videos recorded from the faces of voluntary participants as they played three different popular independent games (horror, action/platform and puzzle). The participants also self-reported on their levels of frustration, immersion and fun in a discrete range [0,4], and answered the reputed Game Experience Questionnaire (GEQ). The faces were found on the videos collected by a face tracking system, developed with existing implementations of the Viola-Jones algorithm for face detection and a variation of the Active Appearance Model (AAM) algorithm for tracking the facial landmarks. Fun was represented in terms of the prototypic emotions and the levels of frustration and immersion. The prototypic emotions were detected with a Support Vector Machine (SVM) trained from existing datasets, and the frustration, immersion and fun levels were detected with a Structured Perceptron trained from the collected data and the self reported levels of each affect, as well as estimations of the gradient of the distance between the face and the camera and the blink rate measured in blinks per minute. The evaluation was supported by a comparison of the self-reported levels of each affect and the answers to GEQ, and performed with measurements of precision and recall obtained in cross-validation tests. The frustration classifier could not obtain a precision above chance, mainly because the collected data didn\'t have enough variability in the reported levels of this affect. The immersion classifier obtained better precision particularly when trained with the estimated blink rate, with a median value of 0.42 and an Interquartile Range (IQR) varying from 0.12 to 0.73. The fun classifier, trained with the detected prototypic emotions and the reported levels of frustration and immersion, obtained the best precision scores, with a median of 0.58 and IQR varying from 0.28 to 0.84. All classifiers suffered from low recall, what was caused by difficulties in the tracking of landmarks and the fact that the emotion classifier was unbalanced due to existing datasets having more samples of neutral and happiness expressions. Nonetheless, a strong indication of the feasibility of assessing fun from recorded videos is in the pattern of variation of the levels predicted. Apart from the frustration classifier, the immersion and the fun classifier were able to predict the increases and decreases of the respective affect levels with an average error margin close to 1. / Este trabalho investiga a viabilidade de medir a diversão apenas a partir da análise computacional de imagens faciais capturadas de webcams de baixo custo. O estudo e desenvolvimento se baseou em vídeos gravados com as faces de voluntários enquanto jogavam três diferentes jogos populares e independentes (horror, ação/plataforma e puzzle). Os participantes também reportaram seus níveis de frustração, imersão e diversão no intervalo discreto [0, 4], e responderam ao renomado Game Experience Questionnaire (GEQ). Faces foram encontradas nos vídeos coletados utilizando um sistema desenvolvido com implementações existentes do algoritmo de Viola-Jones para a detecção da face e uma variação do algoritmo Active Appearance Model (AAM) para o rastreamento das marcas faciais. A diversão foi representada em termos das emoções prototípicas e dos níveis de frustração e imersão. As emoções prototípicas foram detectadas com uma Máquina de Vetores de Suporte (SVM) treinada com bases de dados existentes, e os níveis de frustração, imersão e diversão foram detectados com um Perceptron Estruturado treinado com os dados coletados e os níveis reportados de cada afeto, com o gradiente da distância entre a face e a câmera, e com a taxa de piscadas por minuto. A avaliação foi apoiada pela comparação dos níveis reportados com as respostas ao GEQ, e executada com métricas de precisão e revocação (recall) obtidas em testes de validação cruzada. O classificador de frustração não obteve uma precisão acima de chance, principalmente porque os dados coletados não tiveram variabilidade suficiente nos níveis reportados desse afeto. O classificador de imersão obteve uma precisão melhor particularmente quando treinado com a taxa de piscadas, com uma média de 0.42 e uma Amplitude Interquartil (IQR) entre 0.12 e 0.73. O classificador de diversão, treinado com as emoções prototípicas e os níveis reportados de frustração e imersão, obteve a melhor precisão, com média de 0.58 e IQR entre 0.28 e 0.84. Todos os classificadores sofreram de baixa revocação, causada por dificuldades no rastreamento das marcas faciais e pelo desbalanceamento do classificador de emoções, cujos dados de treinamento continham mais exemplos de expressões neutras e de felicidade. Ainda assim, um forte indicador da viabilidade de medir diversão a partir de vídeos está nos padrões de variação dos níveis previstos. Com exceção da frustração, os classificadores de imersão e de diversão foram capazes de prever os aumentos e reduções dos níveis dos respectivos afetos com uma margem de erro média próxima de 1.

For small (α < α1c) and large (α > α2c) values of the parameter of frustration α = J2/J1 we ordered two states: the state of Néel (or antiferromagnetic-AF) and collinear antiferromagnetic (CAF), respectively, which are separated by a disordered state (spin-liquid SL). The CAF state consists of spins oriented parallel along the chain and antiparalelamente between chains, whereas the SL state is believed to be represented by the settings singlet states of dimers or platelets randomly oriented over the entire square lattice. Many debates were devoted to that kind of phase transition order at points α = α1c and α = α2c, concluding in a first-order one, respectively. Years ago, Oliveira [Phys. Rev. B 43, 6181 (1991)] proposed a variational method which uses as its starting point the ground state of the product states of isolated platelets (singlets), thus obtaining the magnetization subnet A, mA, and average internal energy as a function of α. Qualitative results described above were observed with values for points of the same phase transitions α1c ≈ 0.41 and α2c ≈ 0.68. In this work we will generalize this variational method to include a spatial anisotropy for the exchange, which consists of interactions of different first neighbors J1 - horizontal (vertical) and J1 = λJ1 - vertical (horizontal), with all interactions seconds to neighbors along the diagonals with the same intensity J2 (called model J1-J1 -J2 Heisenberg). We discuss the phase diagram at T = 0 plane λ-α, the behavior of order parameters and average internal energy AF and CAF phases as a function of α for various values of the spatial anisotropy λ. Our goal is to analyze the effect of anisotropy on the disordered state (SL), in which some methods (nonlinear waves spins, expanding in series) have provided that this state exist each value of 0<λ≤1, whereas other ones (field effective spin waves linear, coupled cluster) are foreseen only the SL state to high anisotropy values (λ>λ1) and a first-order phase transition between the phases AF and CAF. / Recentemente, o modelo de Heisenberg quântico antiferromagnético de spin ½ com interações competitivas entre primeiros (J1) e segundos (J2) vizinhos numa rede quadrada (o chamado modelo J1−J2 Heisenberg) tem sido exaustivamente estudado por diversos métodos, onde as propriedades críticas são relativamente bem conhecidas em T = 0. Para pequenos (α < α1c) e grandes (α > α2c) valores do parâmetro de frustração α = J2/J1 temos dois estados ordenados: o estado de Néel (ou antiferromagnético-AF) e colinear antiferromagnético (CAF), respectivamente, que são separados por um estado desordenado (spin líquido-SL). Neste trabalho generalizaremos este método variacional para incluir uma anisotropia espacial no exchange, que consiste em interações de primeiros vizinhos diferentes J1 - na horizontal (vertical) e J1 = λ J1 - na vertical (horizontal), com todas as interações de segundos vizinhos ao longo das diagonais com a mesma intensidade J2 (o chamado modelo J1-J1 -J2 Heisenberg). Discutiremos o diagrama de fase em T=0 no plano λ-α, o comportamento dos parâmetros de ordem e energia interna média nas fases AF e CAF como uma função de α para vários valores da anisotropia espacial λ. Nosso objetivo é analisar o efeito desta anisotropia sobre o estado desordenado (SL), onde alguns métodos (ondas de spins não linear, expansão em séries) têm previsto que este estado existe para todo valor de 0<λ≤1, enquanto outros métodos (campo efetivo, ondas de spin linear, cluster acoplado) têm previsto apenas este estado SL para altos valores de anisotropia (λ>λ1) e uma transição de fase de primeira ordem entre as fases AF e CAF.

Etude par RMN et MuSR des composés antiferromagnétiques fortement frustrés à géométrie de bicouches kagomé

Dans les composés antiferromagnétiques Heisenberg à géométrie kagomé, la frustration des interactions est à l'origine d'un état liquide de spins à T=0. Un état RVB, originalement proposé par Anderson dans les réseaux triangulaires puis dans les cuprates, décrit probablement ce fondamental, dont l'état singulet est dégénéré exponentiellement dans un faible gap singulet-triplet. Peu de composés expérimentaux se rapprochent aujourd'hui du système idéal et l'existence de perturbations ou d'anisotropie lève souvent la dégénérescence du fondamental lorsque T->0. Une étude par RMN, MuSR et SQUID, a été réalisée dans les composés à géométrie de bicouches kagomé de spin 3/2, Ba2Sn2ZnGa10-7pCr7pO22 et SrCr9pGa12-9pO19, considérés comme les archétypes d'un hamiltonien de spins purement Heisenberg sur un réseau kagomé. Outre l'absence caractéristique de transition jusqu'à une température Tg~2 K bien plus basse que la température de Curie-Weiss thetaCW~250 K, des propriétés physiques semblables dans ces deux systèmes sont mesurées malgré des défauts radicalement différent. Les propriétés intrinsèques de cette géométrie en sont déduites, à savoir: - une décroissance de la susceptibilité en dessous de 45 K (RMN) interprétée par de très faibles longueurs de corrélations magnétiques, au moins pour T>10 K, malgré les fortes interactions antiferromagnétiques (thetaCW~250 K). Ce maximum de la susceptibilité reste compatible avec l'existence d'un gap de spin; - l'existence de fluctuations quantiques pour T>30 mK, beaucoup plus bas que Tg (MuSR); - la corrélation entre l'apparition de ces fluctuations et celle d'un état de type verre de spin à Tg. Un modèle phénoménologique décrivant la relaxation des muons est présenté, pour la première fois dans ces systèmes, et suggère la stabilisation d'un état de type RVB en dessous de Tg.

Etude par RMN de la susceptibilité et des effets de dilution dans le composé magnétique géométriquement frustré SrCr9pGa12-9pO19

Le composé SrCr_(9p)Ga_(12-9p)O_(19) est l'archétype des composés à interactions antiferromagnétiques géométriquement frustrées. Il est constitué d'une bicouche kagomé d'ions Cr3+ dont le spin Heisenberg est S=3/2. Ce mémoire présente une étude par résonance magnétique nucléaire (RMN) du gallium sur une large gamme de concentrations en chrome (0.72 < p <0.95). Le noyau de Ga permet de sonder la susceptibilité de la bicouche kagomé et de séparer les propriétés intrinsèques associées à la frustration géométrique de celles reliées à la dilution du réseau magnétique. Les principaux résultats sont : 1) La susceptibilité intrinsèque de la bicouche kagomé passe par un maximum à une température de l'ordre de 40-50 K, quelle que soit la dilution jusqu'à une valeur de 20%. 2) A basse température, un état hautement dynamique se traduit par une disparition du signal RMN quelle que soit la dilution. 3) L'augmentation de susceptibilité macroscopique à basse température est associée aux défauts de type paramagnétique qui sont induits par la dilution magnétique de la bicouche kagomé. Grâce à la faible teneur en défauts d'un échantillon p=0.95 synthétisé pour cette thèse, nous pouvons discuter la nature locale du défaut qui correspond à une réponse de spin alternée de site en site autour de la lacune de spin. Ce résultat, ainsi que le maximum de susceptibilité marque une certaine unité avec les systèmes à corrélations antiferromagnétiques en basse dimension, même avec une faible longueur de corrélation. 4) Le gel type verre de spins observé entre 2 et 4 K n'est pas du aux défauts induits par la dilution du réseau kagomé mais est bien une propriété intrinsèque de ce réseau à interactions frustrées.

Proprietes de basse energie et anisotropies d'interactions de systemes magnetiques geometriquement frustres

Cette these est consacree a l'etude de quelques aspects theoriques de systemes geometriquement frustres. Dans certains reseaux (pyrochlore,...) ou les interactions antiferromagnetiques entre spins (S=1/2) plus proches voisins sont fortement frustrees l'etat fondamental ainsi que les premiers etats excites sont des singulets (S=0). Par ailleurs, les correlations spin-spin sont a courte portee dans ces liquides de spins. En prenant en compte ces deux caracteristiques, ainsi que la geometrie du reseau pyrochlore, on derive un hamiltonien effectif pour decrire ce systeme a basse temperature. En resolvant cet hamiltonien a l'approximation du champ moyen, on obtient la structure singulet de l'etat fondamental. Le reseau kagome a ete l'objet de nombreuses etudes qui montrent que l'hamiltonien de Heisenberg conduit a un etat desordonné liquide de spins sur ce reseau. Ceci est en desaccord avec l'ordre magnetique observe dans certaines realisations experimentales du reseau kagome (de la famille des jarosites). On montre que les interactions Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya sont autorisees par la geometrie du reseau kagome (et des jarosites), on en precise la structure et une derivation microscopique de ces interactions est faite. Les proprietes magnetiques qui en decoulent sont etudiees dans l'approximation du champ moyen et par simulations Monte Carlo. Les fluctuations quantiques sont sondees par un developpement en ondes de spins. On montre que les interactions de Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya expliquent la mise en ordre de certains composes jarosites. Le cas du reseau pyrochlore est egalement considere : on explicite les interactions Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya autorisees par la geometrie de ce reseau et les structures magnetiques qui en decoulent. Cette interaction pourrait expliquer l'ordre magnetique qui apparai t dans certains composes pyrochlores.

Etude des excitations de basse énergie dans des systèmes magnétiques frustrés de basse dimensionnalité: gap de spin et singulets de basse énergie

La physique de basse énergie du modèle de Heisenberg antiferromagnétique pour des spins 1/2 en deux dimensions recèle une grande variété de comportements, pour certains mal compris, lorsque l'on est en présence de frustration. Outre l'intérêt théorique que présente l'étude de ces modèles, il se trouve qu'ils décrivent de manière satisfaisante de nombreux composés réels maintenant synthétisés. Dans cette thèse, nous abordons les deux aspects de l'étude de ces modèles. D'un point de vue théorique, nous examinons ce modèle, à l'aide de techniques numériques, sur l'un des réseaux les plus frustrés : le réseau kagomé. Nous montrons comment les très fortes signatures de la frustration (existence d'un gap de spin peuplé d'un grand nombre d'états singulets) observées dans ce modèle peuvent être correctement comprises à l'aide d'états RVB (<< Resonating Valence Bond >>, Lien de Valence Résonant) à courte portée. Cette approche présente en outre l'intérêt de donner une image relativement simple de la physique de basse énergie du modèle. Bien qu'attribuées à la forte frustration de ce modèle, les propriétés du spectre du hamiltonien de Heisenberg sur le réseau kagomé n'avaient pas d'équivalent dans les systèmes analogues. Nous mettons en évidence, de manière exacte, l'existence de propriétés semblables (gap de spin et singulets de basse énergie) dans un modèle unidimensionnel de tétraèdres couplés. Nous abordons enfin les applications de l'étude numérique des modèles frustrés à l'explication de propriétés de composés réels. En effet, il est notamment possible de confronter ces résultats à des mesures de susceptibilité ou à des expériences de diffraction de neutrons. Nous examinons tout d'abord le composé CaV4O9, premier système bidimensionnel demi-rempli présentant un gap dans son spectre d'excitations. Nous montrons que l'analyse des symétries du premier état excité permet, par comparaison avec la relation de dispersion obtenue par diffraction de neutrons, de borner les paramètres du modèle, par ailleurs difficiles à évaluer par des méthodes de chimie quantique. L'analyse de la susceptibilité rend possible, dans le cas de Li2VO(Si,Ge)O4 qui est la première réalisation du modèle J_1 - J_2 sur le réseau carré, la mise en évidence de la frustration et l'évaluation de son importance dans ces deux composés.

Effets des anisotropies de spins dans les oxydes de basse dimension

Les oxydes modeles de basse dimension, comme les composes de spins 1/2 CuGeO3, SrCu2(BO3)2 ou NaV2O5, soulevent de nombreuses questions sur la nature de l'anti-ferromagnetisme de la phase basse-temperature, desordonne par les fluctuations quantiques. Cette these porte sur la description theorique des proprietes magnetiques de ces composes, en lien avec les nombreux resultats experimentaux. En particulier, des resultats inattendus ont ete observes dans deux experiences originales : effet de rotation de la polarisation dans une experience de diffusion inelastique de neutrons et transitions optiques ``interdites''. Pour expliquer ces effets, nous avons ete amenes a considerer des interactions anisotropes entre spins comme l'interaction de Dzyaloshinski-Moriya. Nous avons etudie les effets de cette interaction dans les systemes quantiques sans ordre magnetique et explique la structure fine de l'excitation triplet observee dans SrCu2(BO3)2. L'effet de rotation de polarisation permet d'etudier les interferences entre excitations magnetiques et phonons et est intimement lie a la presence d'anisotropie. Nous avons etabli les regles de selection dans le cadre d'une theorie perturbative dans le couplage spin-phonon et compare avec les resultats experimentaux. De meme, nous avons etudie les regles de selection des transitions optiques, en examinant non seulement l'effet de l'operateur dipolaire magnetique, mais aussi celui de l'operateur dipolaire electrique en generalisant la theorie de Fleury-Loudon. L'ordre de grandeur de l'interaction de Dzyaloshinski-Moriya - statique et dynamique - a ete reconsidere pour la geométrie de ces composes sur la base de la theorie du superechange. Nous avons montre qu'elle pouvait devenir, de facon etonnante a priori, plus grande que l'echange principal.
